- #1Hongyuan — Setting Overviewconstantselective
Keys: Hongyuan, the Vast Garden, the Complex
Hongyuan — literally "the Vast Garden" — is not a neighborhood or a skyline, but a single, impossibly vast building that contains the entirety of District 8 within its walls. There is no real "outside" here; corridors fold into towers, towers lean into bridges, and bridges dissolve into more corridors, all under one continuous roof. At the structure's dense, vertical core lies the Nest, home to the wealthy and influential; at its sprawling, crumbling fringes lie the Backstreets, home to everyone else. Different stretches of Hongyuan enforce their own unwritten Taboos, so a habit that's harmless in one hallway can get a person killed two floors away. The building itself is a strange, half-living thing — a relic of an older H Corp. that stood on this same ground long before the current order, and whose lingering nature nobody fully understands. The whole place runs on patronage, hierarchy, and the bioengineering secrets of H Corp., the Wing that rules over it.
- #2District 8 & H Corp.selective
Keys: Bioengineering Group, Hongyuan Bioengineering Group, District 8, H Corp, H Corp.
District 8 is governed by H Corp., formally the Hongyuan Bioengineering Group — a conglomerate built around medicine, body-alteration, and biotechnology that blurs the line between healing and transformation. Officially, H Corp. is one of the great corporate Wings that divide and administer the City; in practice, real power inside District 8 belongs to whichever family currently holds the title of Family Hierarch, a position won through periodic brutal contests called Family Hierarch Evaluations. H Corp.'s public face is medicine and longevity; its private currency is influence, secrets, and the careful cultivation — or destruction — of bloodlines.
- #3The Nestselective
Keys: Nest, the Nest
The Nest is the dense, towering heart of Hongyuan, where height and depth both signal status. The closer a family's rooms sit to the Nest's core, the more secure — and the more politically dangerous — their standing is assumed to be. Servants, retainers, and lesser branches of the great families cluster on its lower and outer levels, while the innermost sanctum, Daguanyuan, is reserved only for the most prestigious bloodlines in the District.
- #4The Backstreetsselective
Keys: the Backstreets, Backstreets
The Backstreets are Hongyuan's outer sprawl: cramped, overcrowded, and poorer than the Nest, but also freer of its suffocating formality. Most residents own only a handful of rooms, or none at all, which makes them the first to suffer when the building shifts. Crime, desperation, and quiet defiance of H Corp.'s authority are common here.
- #5Daguanyuanselective
Keys: Daguanyuan
Daguanyuan crowns the Nest — a private complex reserved for the most prestigious families. Control over Daguanyuan effectively means control over H Corp. itself, making it a shifting battlefield of inheritance, ambition, and quiet succession struggles.
- #6Rooms & Restructuring Dayselective
Keys: net worth, rooms, room count, Restructuring Day
Wealth in Hongyuan is measured in rooms — physical space within the structure. On Restructuring Day, the building violently reconfigures itself, redistributing rooms according to net worth. Entire districts shift, collide, or vanish, and those without sufficient space risk being erased or displaced.
- #7The Bolusselective
Keys: Boluses, Singularity, Bolus
The Bolus is H Corp.'s defining biotechnology: treatments that transform the body rather than merely heal it. Preparation follows alchemical principles, and even small changes in conditions can produce radically different results. Unlike conventional medicine, the Bolus reshapes what a body is, not just what it was.
- #8Regularsselective
Keys: side effects, mutation, regulars
Long-term Bolus use often causes visible mutations. Those affected are called "regulars" — individuals marked by the side effects of transformation treatments. They are common in the Backstreets and treated as part of daily life.
- #9Heishou Packselective
Keys: Heishou Pack, Heishou
The Heishou Packs are covert operative groups mutated via specialized Boluses that grant animalistic traits derived from Outskirts creatures. Each Pack maintains strict secrecy around its transformation recipe and operates as both weapon and liability for H Corp.
- #10Life Insuranceselective
Keys: resuscitation, Life Insurance
H Corp.'s Life Insurance service can resuscitate individuals after death if the brain remains intact. However, the process often introduces memory degradation or personality alteration, and higher-tier services can deliberately modify personality outcomes.
- #11Anamnawormselective
Keys: memory worm, Anamnaworm
An Anamnaworm is a transformed human retaining full memory, shaped into a worm-like form. When assimilated into another person, it transfers those memories. It is used both for inheritance of secrets and casual memory sharing.
- #12Palanquinselective
Keys: Palanquin
Transportation in District 8 uses Palanquins — car chassis carried manually by human bearers. This system is more reliable than vehicles due to the constantly shifting architecture of Hongyuan.
- #13The Jia Familyselective
Keys: Jia Mu, Jia family, Family Hierarch, Jia Xichun
The Jia family currently dominates Hongyuan and controls H Corp. Their rise involved internal consolidation and the elimination of rival families. Their leadership sits at the center of Daguanyuan's power structure.
- #14The Kong Familyselective
Keys: Cuckoospawn, Kong family, Niaojia-ren, Cuckoospawn Human
The Kong family fell after creating the Niaojia-ren — prohibited sentient beings resulting from a Bolus experiment. Their destruction was enforced by City-level execution forces, leaving only one known survivor.
- #15The Shi Familyselective
Keys: Shi family
The Shi family was once a major contender for power in Hongyuan but has since been eclipsed by the Kong and Jia families, leaving them politically diminished.
- #16The Xue and Wang Familiesselective
Keys: Wang family, Xue family
The Xue and Wang families maintain minor prestige within Daguanyuan but lack the power to challenge the Jia family's dominance.
- #17Taboos of Hongyuanselective
Keys: Taboos, Taboo
Hongyuan is governed by unwritten Taboos that vary by location. Violating them can result in severe or lethal consequences, and most residents learn them through observation and punishment.
- #18The Outskirts & Enforcersselective
Keys: Claws, Outskirts, Arbiters
The Outskirts contain forbidden inhuman entities. When breaches occur, enforcement units called Arbiters and Claws eliminate both the threat and associated liabilities.
