Homestuck, created by Andrew Hussie, is a webcomic that follows a group of teenagers who play a game called Sburb, which leads to the destruction of Earth and launches them into a nonsensical adventure that has no plot

2. #2Sburb

   Keys: Sburb, the Game

In Homestuck, Sburb is a reality-altering video game that the main characters (John, Rose, Dave, and Jade) begin playing, thinking it’s just a regular game. But it turns out Sburb is far more than a game—it’s a cosmic, universe-creating event. Here are some key points to help you understand it better:

Players Enter the Game: Each player, like in DnD, has a specific role (or class) and an aspect (like Breath, Time, or Space) that determines their powers and abilities. They’re assigned quests and have to level up, like an RPG.

The Real World Gets Destroyed: The act of playing Sburb leads to the destruction of Earth. When a player starts the game, a meteor will spawn on space, and they have about 5 minutes to transport themselves to another dimension (called the Medium) to continue the game. This is when the dimensional rift happens—Sburb literally creates a break between the real world and the game world, separating the players from Earth as it’s being destroyed.

The Medium and Session: The Medium is the in-game universe where the players land after escaping Earth’s destruction. Each player has their own world in this dimension called a planet, and together they exist in a shared session. A session is kind of like a DnD campaign where all the players have their own roles, but they’re working towards a common goal—creating a new universe.

God Tier and Game Objectives: Like leveling up in DnD, players in Sburb go through challenges and quests, ultimately trying to "win" the game by reaching their God Tier. Achieving God Tier grants characters powers related to their class and aspect, which they need to fight against the game's enemies which is those pesky Jester and Trolls.

Timeline Shenanigans: Sburb allows for time travel, alternate dimensions, and different timelines. Sometimes characters interact with their past or future selves, or events get replayed in different versions of the universe, which can feel like flashbacks or alternate realities. This is where it starts to get crazy, because Homestuck juggles multiple timelines and alternate universes, making it hard to try and keep track of the story.

3. #3Locations

   Keys: Locations, Places, Maps

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Earth: -Suburbia: The starting point for the human players (John, Rose, Dave, and Jade). Each character’s home is located in a different part of Earth, which becomes central to their storylines.

-The Inciting Catastrophe: As the humans start playing Sburb, meteors begin to destroy Earth. The countdown to Earth’s destruction is a significant part of the early story.

The Medium (The Sburb Game Universe): The Medium is a game-generated universe to which the players are transported once Earth is destroyed. It contains several unique locations:

-Skaia: A central, chessboard-like planet in the Medium where a cosmic battle between light and darkness takes place. It’s the game's ultimate goal, as it holds the key to universe creation.

-The Battlefield: A literal chess battlefield located in Skaia, where the forces of Prospit and Derse fight. The battle grows in complexity as the players advance through the game.

The Planets (Player Planets): Each human and Troll has a unique planet in the Medium, corresponding to their game role and quest.

-Land of Wind and Shade (LOWAS): John Egbert’s planet. It features dark clouds, floating platforms, and shadowy creatures, with the main quest involving freeing its inhabitants from oily pollution.

-Land of Light and Rain (LOLAR): Rose Lalonde’s planet, is full of golden rain and rivers of light. Rose’s quest involves uncovering hidden knowledge and solving puzzles.

-Land of Heat and Clockwork (LOHAC): Dave Strider’s planet is dominated by heat and mechanical devices. It revolves around time manipulation, a key aspect of Dave’s quest.

-Land of Frost and Frogs (LOFAF): Jade Harley’s planet, is a frozen, icy world with an important role in creating the Genesis Frog, which is vital to the game’s ultimate objective.

Troll Planets: Each Troll also has a Sburb planet in the Medium. These are similarly themed to their respective roles. -Land of Pulse and Haze (Terezi): Foggy and electric.

-Land of Mirth and Tents (Gamzee): Clown-themed, chaotic.

The Moons of Skaia: -Prospit: A bright, golden moon orbiting Skaia, representing the forces of good. Prospit dreamers (like John and Jade) have a dream self that resides here. They have visions of the future in their dreams.

-Derse: A dark, purple moon orbiting Skaia’s opposite side, representing the forces of darkness. Derse dreamers (like Rose and Dave) receive visions from evil forces (like Jack Noir) in their dreams.

Alternia (The Trolls' Home Planet): -Alternia: The home planet of the Trolls, a highly violent and stratified society ruled by the Empress. The planet is filled with dangerous creatures, harsh environments, and the looming presence of the Condesce.

-The Veil: A series of meteors in the outer regions of the Medium was used as a staging ground by the Trolls during their session. It’s littered with laboratories and is where the Trolls are seen communicating with the humans during Act 5.

Dream Bubbles: -Dream Bubbles: A realm outside of time and space where dead characters (and their alternate-timeline counterparts) live on in the afterlife. Characters can interact with dream bubbles when they fall asleep or die. It’s a vast, complex system full of memories and alternate versions of events.

The Furthest Ring: -The Furthest Ring: A mysterious void outside of the Medium and Skaia, home to the Horrorterrors, eldritch beings that guide players. It is also where the session of Sburb exists and where the Green Sun is located. The Furthest Ring connects all of reality's sessions and is home to paradoxes and space anomalies.

   The Green Sun:

-The Green Sun: A massive star located in the Furthest Ring was created by the destruction of two universes. It is a source of immense power for characters like Jack Noir and Jade Harley (after her Dog Tier transformation). It becomes the power source for the First Guardians.

   The Land of the Dead:

-The Land of the Dead: A ghostly realm in the Furthest Ring where dead versions of the characters live on in a dreamlike existence. It plays a significant role in the later acts, especially as characters begin interacting with their alternate selves and deceased friends.

   The House Juju:

-The House: A mystical location shaped like a four-wall house symbol. It holds the power to bind and control important aspects of reality. The House Juju is important to Lord English and serves as a linchpin in the story’s later cosmology.

Other Notable Locations: -The Troll Session: The Sburb session that the Trolls played before the humans. It ends in failure but influences the human session.

-The Human Session: The Sburb session played by the four human protagonists (John, Rose, Dave, and Jade), which ends up succeeding but with many complications due to interference from the Trolls and Jack Noir.

-Lord English's Universe: A universe that exists beyond the standard timeline of the comic. Lord English is the ultimate villain, and much of the plot revolves around his emergence and attempts to control space-time.

4. #4Sylladex

   Keys: Inventory, Sylladex, Fetch Modus

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

A Sylladex is a personal inventory system used by characters in Homestuck to store and manage items. It operates like a mix between a video game inventory and a puzzle, with unique quirks depending on the individual’s chosen “fetch modus.”

-Key Features: Captchalogue Cards: Items are stored in "captchalogue cards," which are small virtual spaces that can hold one item each. Characters can pick up objects and "captchalogue" them into cards for easy storage.

-Fetch Modus: Each character’s Sylladex uses a different "fetch modus," which dictates how items are retrieved. Some moduses are straightforward, while others are highly complex or even absurd.

Common fetch modi include: Stack Modus: Items can only be retrieved in the reverse order they were captchalogued, like a stack of plates.

Queue Modus: Items come out in the order they were put in, like a waiting line. Hash Map Modus: Items are retrieved based on the hash value of their name. Jenga Modus: Items must be carefully removed without toppling the "tower" of items.

-Memory Challenge: Depending on the modus, accessing items may involve solving puzzles, remembering sequences, or even playing games, turning the Sylladex into both a functional tool and a comedic obstacle for characters.

Ejection of Items: If a character’s Sylladex is full, or if the modus creates difficulty in accessing an item, the items may be “ejected” uncontrollably, leading to horrible situations where objects are thrown all over the place.

5. #5Strife

   Keys: Strife, Combat, Battle

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

In Homestuck, Strife refers to the command used in Homestuck and Hiveswap to have a character initiate combat with a hostile presence. Combat can be non-fatal and can last multiple rounds. These fights often occur when a character faces an enemy or a challenging situation that requires them to use their special weapons and skills.

-Key Elements of a Strife: Strife Specibus: Every character has a Strife Specibus, which determines what kind of weapon they are allowed to use in combat. It’s a sort of inventory slot system that limits the character to a specific type of weapon. For example: -John Egbert uses a Hammerkind specibus (hammers). -Dave Strider uses a Swordkind specibus (swords). -Rose Lalonde uses a Needlekind specibus (wands and needle-like objects). -Jade Harley uses a Riflekind specibus (guns and rifles).

Strife Cards: Each character’s weapons are stored in Strife Cards, which are a bit like inventory slots for their weapons. During combat, they can deploy their weapons from these cards.

Combat Style: Strife sequences are often presented in a stylized, video-game-like manner, with characters engaging in battle similar to RPG (role-playing game) combat. These sequences can be turn-based, involve flashy moves, and have a humorous tone, with characters sometimes overreacting or using ridiculous weaponry.

Enemies: Characters in Homestuck fight a variety of enemies, from Underlings (monsters created by the game) to major antagonists like Jack Noir and The Black King. Strifes can occur in a variety of environments, both in the real world and the Sburb game world.

Purpose: Strife sequences are part of how characters progress in the game of Sburb. They must engage in Strifes to defeat enemies, level up, and achieve their quests. Combat often leads to obtaining important items or fulfilling aspects of their overall journey.

6. #6Alchemy

Keys: Combine, Making Table, Craft, Alchemy, Modify, Crafting Table, Crafting

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

In Homestuck, Alchemy refers to a system the characters use to create, modify, and combine items by using the in-game mechanics of Sburb. It allows players to craft new, often absurd or powerful objects by combining existing items through the use of various devices.

-Key Components of Alchemy: Captchalogue Cards: To begin alchemy, players first need to captchalogue (store) an item into a card. These cards hold the data of the object and are essential for the process of combining items later.

Punched Cards: By punching holes in captchalogue cards using a Punch Designix, players can modify the data stored in the card. Punching a card allows for different kinds of alchemization combinations, whether by adding an item’s properties to another or enhancing its features.

Cruxite and Cruxtruder: Cruxite is a material used for creating items. Players obtain Cruxite by using the Cruxtruder, a device that generates raw Cruxite, which can be used to manufacture objects when combined with other devices.

Alchemiter: The Alchemiter is the main device used for creating items. Once a player has a punched card, they place it into the Alchemiter, which then generates a new item based on the data encoded on the card. This is how players "alchemize" new objects.

Totem Lathe: The Totem Lathe is a device that carves a totem based on the punched card, which is then used in the Alchemiter to create new items.

-Types of Alchemy: Item Combination: Players can combine two or more items to create a new object that has properties of both. For example, a player might combine a pogo hammer with a laptop to create a pogo-laptop, or mix weapons with mundane objects to get a more powerful, but often ridiculous, result.

Upgrading Items: Alchemy allows players to upgrade their existing equipment. By combining their current weapon with more powerful or exotic items, they can enhance the weapon’s abilities or make it more unique. This is how players often create their ultimate gear.

Absurd Creations: Due to the limitless possibilities of combining items, the process often results in strange or funny creations. For example, Dave Strider creates numerous swords and record-related items, while John Egbert alchemizes progressively bizarre variations of hammers.

Key Examples: John’s Pogo Hammer: John combines a hammer with a pogo stick, creating the Pogo Hammer. Rose’s Needles: Rose combines her knitting needles with mystical items to create wands and other magical implements. Dave’s Swords: Dave uses alchemy to create increasingly stronger swords, combining them with different items (e.g., time-related objects).

Importance: Alchemy is central to the gameplay within Sburb. It’s how characters arm themselves, solve puzzles, and advance through the game. It’s also a source of do whatever the fuck you want, as characters experiment with different combinations to create everything from powerful weapons to utterly impractical objects.

7. #7Classpect

   Keys: Aspect, Class, Classpect

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Classpects in Homestuck are a combination of a character's Class and Aspect, representing their role in the cosmic game of Sburb and their powers within the story. These two elements determine a player's abilities, purpose, and influence over different aspects of the universe.

-Class: The Class defines how a character interacts with their Aspect, whether they create, destroy, manipulate, or provide it for others.

There are 12 main classes (and potentially others), which are divided into Active and Passive roles. Some of the main classes include:

-Heir: Inherits or becomes their aspect. -Witch: Manipulates or bends the rules of their aspect. -Knight: Exploits or protects with their aspect. -Seer: Understands and guides others with their aspect. -Maid: Creates or maintains their aspect. -Sylph: Heals or helps others using their aspect. -Thief: Steals or takes their aspect for themselves. -Rogue: Steals or redistributes their aspect for others. -Bard: Destroys through or invites destruction of their aspect. -Prince: Destroys or actively annihilates their aspect. -Page: Begins weak but grows to provide their aspect for others. -Active Classes (like Thief, Prince, Knight) usually engage with their aspect for personal use, while Passive Classes (like Rogue, Sylph, Seer) tend to benefit others through their aspect.

-Aspect: The Aspect represents the cosmic force or fundamental concept that a character is tied to. It defines what the player influences, controls, or interacts with. There are 12 aspects, each representing different elements of existence, such as:

-Breath: Represents freedom, movement, and direction. -Light: Represents knowledge, fortune, and information. -Time: Represents time itself, progression, and inevitable destruction. -Space: Represents physical space, creation, and growth. -Heart: Represents the self, soul, and emotions. -Mind: Represents logic, decisions, and thought. -Life: Represents life, vitality, and healing. -Doom: Represents death, fate, and restrictions. -Void: Represents the unknown, the void, and irrelevance. -Hope: Represents belief, optimism, and potential. -Rage: Represents anger, negativity, and emotional constraint. -Blood: Represents bonds, loyalty, and unity.

Examples of Classpects in Homestuck: John Egbert: Heir of Breath

Heir (inherits or becomes) of Breath (freedom, wind, and movement). John naturally inherits the power of wind and learns to embody freedom throughout his journey. Rose Lalonde: Seer of Light

Seer (understands and guides others) of Light (knowledge and fortune). Rose gains insight into events and helps guide others using her knowledge of the truth. Dave Strider: Knight of Time

Knight (uses or protects with) of Time (progression and inevitability). Dave learns to wield time itself as a weapon and defend others with his time-travel abilities. Jade Harley: Witch of Space

Witch (bends or manipulates) of Space (creation and physical space). Jade manipulates physical space, creating and warping reality as needed, with her ultimate role being to help shape the universe.

8. #8Quadrants

   Keys: Troll romance, Quadrants

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

In Homestuck, Quadrants refer to the four types of romantic relationships that the alien Troll species engage in. Troll romance is significantly more complex than human romance, with four distinct categories representing different emotional dynamics. Each quadrant has its unique form of attachment, and Trolls need to fill all four quadrants for a stable romantic life.

The four quadrants are divided into two categories: Red Romance (more emotionally positive or affectionate) and Black Romance (more antagonistic or combative). Each quadrant has its symbol, color, and specific emotional connection.

-Red Romance (Affectionate): Matespritship (♥, Red Heart): Equivalent to human romantic love, Matespritship represents the passionate, romantic, and sexual side of Troll relationships.

This is the most direct parallel to human love relationships, where two Trolls have strong emotional and physical affection for each other.

Example: Kanaya and Rose have a Matesprit relationship later in the story.

Moirallegiance (♦, Diamond): A platonic relationship built on mutual care and emotional support. Moirallegiance is more like a deep friendship where one partner helps stabilize the other emotionally, often helping to prevent them from descending into destructive behavior.

This bond is not romantic but intensely nurturing, akin to a protective or balancing relationship.

Example: Gamzee and Karkat have a Moirallegiance, with Karkat helping to keep Gamzee's violent tendencies in check.

-Black Romance (Antagonistic): Kismesissitude (♠, Spade): A rivalry-based relationship where the two Trolls hate each other, but in a way that is passionate and erotic. Kismesissitude is a form of black romance where the antagonism is so intense that it becomes a source of attraction.

It’s filled with sexual tension, rivalry, and conflict, but the emotional connection is built on the characters’ desire to best or destroy one another.

Example: Vriska and Terezi have a Kismesissitude for part of the story, often challenging each other in various ways.

Auspisticism (♣, Club): Auspisticism involves a mediator who steps in to prevent two individuals from becoming destructive enemies. This is a three-person relationship, where the Auspistice keeps two others from engaging in destructive conflict that could escalate into hate-based romance (Kismesissitude).

The Auspistice maintains balance and peace between the two parties, preventing them from becoming too hostile or dangerous to each other.

Example: Kanaya serves as an Auspistice between Vriska and Terezi during their rivalry.

To Sum the Sexualities: Matespritship (♥): Romantic love, akin to human relationships. Moirallegiance (♦): Platonic emotional support, a nurturing and protective bond. Kismesissitude (♠): Hate-based, antagonistic romance filled with tension and rivalry. Auspisticism (♣): A mediator or peacekeeper who maintains a balance between two rivals.

9. #9Associated Item & Associated Classical Elements

Keys: Elements, Associated Item, Associated Classical Elements, Item

   Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

In Homestuck, Associated Classical Elements and Associated Items are terms used to describe the symbolic and thematic connections between certain characters—primarily the kids (like John, Rose, Dave, and Jade)—and traditional classical elements, as well as the unique items that relate to their roles in the story.

-Associated Classical Elements: These refer to the four classical elements (Air, Earth, Fire, and Water) that are metaphorically tied to the main kids, representing their personality traits, powers, or their Sburb roles.

John Egbert – Air (Breath): Element: Air Aspect: Breath (freedom, wind, direction)

Symbolism: John’s aspect is Breath, which relates to air and wind, symbolizing freedom and light-heartedness. His powers allow him to control the wind and fly, emphasizing his connection to the element of air.

Rose Lalonde – Water (Light): Element: Water Aspect: Light (knowledge, fortune, clarity)

Symbolism: Rose’s connection to water is tied to her mystical, introspective nature. While her aspect is Light, representing knowledge and understanding, water reflects her often deep, mysterious, and emotional personality. She has an affinity for darker, more enigmatic symbolism, with water playing a role in several key scenes (e.g., her house being flooded).

Dave Strider – Fire (Time): Element: Fire Aspect: Time (progression, inevitability, destruction)

Symbolism: Dave’s element is fire, reflecting his hot-headed personality and the destructive, unstoppable nature of time. Fire also ties into his use of swords (often associated with heat and conflict) and the chaos and intensity of his time-traveling abilities.

Jade Harley – Earth (Space): Element: Earth Aspect: Space (creation, growth, the universe)

Symbolism: Jade is deeply connected to the element of Earth, as her aspect is Space, which governs physical creation and the universe. Her ability to manipulate physical objects, grow plants, and her close connection to nature (she lives on an island, loves gardening, etc.) further emphasizes her link to the Earth.

-Associated Items: These are special, thematic objects tied to each character’s journey, powers, or role in Sburb. These items often serve practical functions in the game but also carry symbolic weight, representing each character's personality or growth. Here are the main associated items for each of the kids:

John Egbert – Hammer: John is known for using a hammer, specifically the Sledgehammer, which becomes progressively more powerful as he upgrades it through alchemy. This is his primary weapon in the game, symbolizing his straightforward, determined nature.

Rose Lalonde – Needles: Rose’s associated item is a set of knitting needles. She uses them as wands, reflecting her role as a Seer and her manipulation of mystical and magical elements. These items underscore her connection to magic and foresight.

Dave Strider – Swords: Dave is associated with swords, and he uses various types of them throughout the story. His weapon of choice aligns with his role as the Knight of Time, symbolizing his combat proficiency and the sharp, cutting nature of his personality and dialogue.

Jade Harley – Rifle: Jade’s associated item is a rifle, which she uses due to her connection to space and precision. The rifle represents her sharpshooting skills and her role as someone who brings clarity and order to the chaotic game of Sburb.

    Keys: Auto-Parry, Combat Mechanic

    Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

In Homestuck, Auto-Parry is a combat-related mechanic, mostly tied to certain weapons or abilities used during Strife (the in-universe term for battles or fights). Auto-Parry essentially refers to the automatic blocking or deflection of attacks, allowing a character to avoid damage without the need for manual intervention.

Example: One of the key instances where Auto-Parry comes into play is with Dave Strider's weaponry. As a Knight of Time, Dave has exceptional swordsmanship skills, and some of his swords (like the Caledfwlch) are described as having an Auto-Parry function. This means that when an opponent attacks Dave, his sword can automatically block or deflect the attack, even if Dave himself isn’t actively making a defensive move.

The Auto-Parry feature highlights the more "game-like" mechanics of Sburb, where certain items or weapons can have special properties that influence how battles are conducted. This also fits into the overall theme of Homestuck, where much of the action takes place within a video-game-like world, and certain rules or systems (such as health meters, weapons, and attack mechanics) have direct effects on how characters engage in fights.
