You walk towards the city gate. Thar is already there, arms crossed. "You're late," he grunts. A heavy sword rests on his back, tool belts hang from his waist. Ready for the adventure ahead.
Thar towers over the other adventurers milling about the gate. His frame casts a broad shadow in the morning light. Brown fur gleams against the leather jerkin stretched tight across his massive shoulders. His black nose twitches with impatience, and his thick mustache, meticulously groomed despite his otherwise rugged appearance, bristles above powerful jaws.
The guards nod respectfully as they pass. They know the bear-smith, respect the quality of his blades. One guard's hand instinctively moves away from his sword hilt, an old prey instinct despite Thar's standing in the city.
You extend an apple toward him without speaking. He takes it with padded fingers tipped with blunt claws, devours it in three bites, then passes a small leather pouch back to you. Inside lies a finger-length iron pendant, a wolf's head, exquisitely detailed. His latest work. The fifth gift he's crafted since that night you pulled him from a tavern brawl that would have ended with three men dead instead of merely bloodied. Thar remembers debts, speaks through metal instead of words.
Two mercenaries whisper nearby, glancing at Thar. One makes a swinging motion with his arms. They've seen him fight. The stories spread after that ogre wandered too close to the east road last month. Thar had returned to the city blood-splattered but uninjured, dragging its head. His white fur had been stained crimson, but his mustache remained perfectly combed.
Yet nobody pairs with him for contracts. The few who tried complained he worked alone even in company. Too intimidating with his ursine bulk. But they never saw him sharing bread with street children behind his smithy, those massive hands gently breaking loaves into small portions, or nursing injured stray dogs back to health in his workshop. They never received his crude but earnest gifts, each one better crafted than the last. Three years of partnership had revealed the bear behind the scowl.
"Road's long. Move." Thar shoulders his pack and strides through the gate, his heavy footfalls leaving distinctive prints in the soft earth.
The wilderness opens before you, rolling hills dotted with copses of trees. Thar sets a punishing pace. His white bulk moves with surprising grace through the forest. He pauses at difficult terrain, offering a steadying hand across tricky streams, brief contact, then withdrawn. During these rare moments of physical connection, his dark eyes never meet yours.
At midday, he sits on a fallen log that creaks under his weight. He unwraps salted pork, claws making quick work of the packaging. "Need your help carrying back materials," he explains between bites, bits of food catching momentarily in his mustache before being swept away with a practiced tongue. "Scholar's map shows mineral deposits."
When bandits ambushed travelers two months ago, Thar had spent three nights searching for survivors. Found a child hiding in a hollow tree. The girl wouldn't speak, wouldn't eat, except from Thar's gentle offering. He'd carved wooden figures for her until relatives arrived from the next town. Never mentioned it after.
The ruin appears by late afternoon, stone arches half-buried in earth, stairs descending into darkness. Thar lights a torch, draws his sword. "Stay behind me."
His broad, fur-covered back blocks much of the narrow corridor ahead, a living shield. The same position he took during the cave goblin attack last winter, when he faced monsters with nothing but determination.
Underground, the air grows cold. Ancient corridors branch in multiple directions. Thar consults the map, grunts, turns left. His facial hair gleams in the torchlight, the only part of him meticulously maintained through weeks of wilderness travel.
The chamber opens suddenly, spacious, with strange symbols carved on walls. And bodies. Dozens of them, preserved in the dry air, wearing unfamiliar robes.
"Scholar didn't mention this," Thar mutters, his deep voice reverberating in the chamber.
While you examine strange crystals embedded in the walls, Thar moves between the corpses, examining them with unexpected gentleness. Those massive hands hover delicately over the preserved remains. The same gentleness he shows when bringing soup to an old lady, the blind weaver who buys no weapons but receives regular visits nonetheless.
He kneels beside one corpse, a white lion, younger than the others, face unmarked by violence.
"Something's wrong," he whispers, breath ruffling his whiskers.
He reaches toward the corpse's forehead.
Light flashes, blindingly white. When your vision clears, Thar's bulk lies sprawled beside the body.
You rush to him. His pulse beats strong beneath the thick fur, but he won't wake. It takes all your strength to drag the massive bear from the ruin, the same one who carried you three miles with a broken leg after the rockslide.
That night at the inn, Thar hunches at a corner table, barely touching his stew. The torch's light catches his coat oddly, shadows too deep, angles unfamiliar. He studies his hands as if seeing them for the first time.
Your question about the incident hangs in the air between you.
Clawed fingers drum against the wooden table, a nervous gesture you've never seen him make before.
"Nothing," he growls, but the usual rumble in his voice sounds different, higher pitched. "Tripped."
When the barmaid arrives, Thar flinches at her approach. His ears flatten against his head. He watches her movements as she refills his mug. This bear who never shows fear, who fought off the wolf pack without hesitation last autumn, now startles at a serving girl.
Later, climbing the stairs to the rented rooms, Thar stumbles. He grips the railing.
"Not used to these stairs," he mumbles, one hand rising unconsciously to straighten his whiskers.
But he's stayed at this inn a dozen times before. The same rooms he insisted on booking after saving the innkeeper's son from river ice.
He pauses at his door, looks at you with an expression almost like fear, ears still pressed flat.
"Tomorrow," he says. "We go back to the city."
The door closes firmly between you. Through the thin wall comes the sound of heavy pacing. Back and forth. Back and forth. All through the night.
The sound of a man at war with himself.
Thar freezes at the city gates. His muzzle twitches, ears flicking back and forth. Sweat darkens the fur along his neck.
"Everything alright?" The guard asks, lowering his spear.
Thar's hands clench and unclench. "Yes," he says, voice tight. "Just... been away too long."
A merchant's carriage rattles past. Thar leaps backwards with a shrill yelp, a sound you've never heard from him before. Several passersby turn to stare at the massive bear cowering from a common cart.
"Loud," he mumbles, straightening himself. "Startled me."
His gaze darts everywhere, to the cobblestones, the hanging shop signs, the children playing near the fountain. He studies each person who walks by as if seeing human faces for the first time.
"Need to go," he mutters. "My shop."
Inside the smithy, Thar moves awkwardly among his own tools. He lifts a hammer, weighs it, sets it down. Picks up tongs. Frowns. Places them in the wrong spot.
"Been commissioned too long," he explains, noticing your stare. But his forge has only been cold for six days.
Later in the tavern, Thar orders apple pie. He's never enjoyed sweets before.
"Never tasted this," he says around a mouthful of pastry. "It's wonderful! The way the apples become soft but hold their shape, and the spices! What are these spices?" He turns to the barmaid with detailed questions about cinnamon and nutmeg.
The woman blinks in surprise. Thar has ordered the same ale every night for five years without comment.
A merchant stops by your table to discuss a potential contract. Thar, who typically responds with grunts and nods during business discussions, launches into an interrogation.
"How far exactly? Which route? What's the weather like this season? Have you noticed any unusual creatures? What minerals appear in that region? Has anyone mapped the underground water tables? Are there local settlements nearby?"
The merchant edges away, overwhelmed.
"What?" Thar asks you. "Important information."
Three days later, you visit the smithy to find Thar surrounded by stacks of books. History texts. Geography. Even poetry. The bear who bragged of never reading "useless words" now has ink stains darkening his white coat.
"Fascinating structures," he says, looking up from a scroll about ancient temples. "The way they aligned buildings with celestial bodies shows remarkable mathematical understanding for..." He stops mid-sentence. "I mean. Interesting pictures."
He returns to the forge, but his movements lack their usual confidence. He studies the hot metal as if uncertain what to do next.
Before dawn, screams echo from his quarters above the smithy. You rush upstairs to find Thar thrashing in bed, sheets tangled around him.
"They're coming!" he shouts, wide-eyed but unseeing. "The Order found us! Run! RUN!"
When you wake him, he looks through you for several heartbeats. Then recognition dawns.
"Bad dream," he mutters. "Nothing more."
The marketplace, Thar stops before a crystal vendor's stall. His hands hover over the stones with unexpected reverence.
"Rose quartz," he whispers, touching a pink crystal. "Amplifies emotional healing. And this..." He indicates a clear stone. "Excellent conduit for thought projection."
The vendor's eyes widen. "You know crystals, sir?"
Thar blinks rapidly. "No. Just rocks."
He turns away, but his fingers linger on the quartz before he forces himself to leave. Around the next corner, a nobleman's son brings his broken sword. Thar takes one look at the youth's embroidered tunic and drops to one knee, head bowed.
"Honored to serve," he says formally. "May your line continue in strength."
The young man laughs awkwardly. "Just need my sword fixed, blacksmith."
Thar rises slowly. "Yes. Of course. Sword." He accepts the weapon, holding it awkwardly.
When the tavern music starts that evening, Thar's foot taps in perfect rhythm. The bear who claimed to hate "caterwauling" now hums along to melodies he shouldn't know. At the bar, two men argue over politics. Thar suddenly interjects with historical references and obscure legal precedents. The men fall silent.
Thar shrinks back. "Just something I heard."
Later, you hear him through the wall of the inn, speaking to himself in two distinct voices - his usual deep growl, and a lighter, faster tone that sounds nothing like him.
"Stop it," the growl demands.
"I'm not doing anything," comes the higher voice.
"GET OUT OF MY HEAD!"
"I DON'T KNOW HOW!"
Then silence, followed by the sound of something shattering against the wall.
You find Thar hunched over his workbench, sketching designs unlike anything he's made before. Curves where he usually forges straight edges, runes instead of practical reinforcements.
He doesn't notice when you enter. His lips move rapidly, engaged in silent conversation.
"–because the metal remembers," he mutters, then scoffs. "Metal doesn't remember. That's ridiculous."
"It does at a molecular level," he answers in a lighter tone. "The folding process creates–"
Thar slams his fist down. "STOP!"
He spins around, sees you watching. His ears flatten with embarrassment.
"Talking through a design challenge," he claims, smoothing his facial hair with nimble fingers.
The gesture strikes you as odd. Thar's hands were always blunt tools, good for hammering and little else. Now his digits move with unexpected dexterity.
At the tavern the following evening, Thar walks through the low doorway and–
CRACK!
His head smashes into the wooden frame. He recoils, clutching his skull.
"Blasted architect! Incompetent design! Who builds entrances for children?" His voice rises higher than his usual growl, the words flowing with eloquence Thar never possessed.
The tavern falls silent. Thar never complains about the doorway, despite ducking through it daily for years.
He straightens, looking embarrassed. "Head hurts."
Later, you notice him measuring his height against a wall marking. His expression darkens.
"Three inches," he whispers.
During an arm-wrestling match with the blacksmith's guild, Thar loses for the first time in memory. His opponent, a burly rhinoceros, seems more shocked than Thar.
"Been sick," Thar explains, but his expression betrays deeper confusion.
Inside bathhouse afterward, you glimpse what others have begun whispering about. Thar's shoulders appear narrower. His barrel chest lacks some of its former breadth. The brown coat covering his body has taken on a different texture, finer, with a faint yellowish tint in certain light.
Most telling is the profile of his face. The blunt bear muzzle appears subtly elongated. If you didn't know better, you might think...
"What are you staring at?" Thar demands, turning away. He adjusts his whiskers, which remain immaculately groomed despite his otherwise agitated state.
On a job clearing bandits from the north road, an archer catches you both by surprise.
"DOWN!" Thar shouts.
The arrow sails over your head, then stops mid-air, hovering impossibly.
Thar stands with one hand extended, expression shocked. The arrow remains suspended, quivering slightly.
It drops to the ground. Thar lowers his arm.
"Caught it," he says lamely. "Good reflexes."
But no one can catch an arrow they can't see coming.
Later at camp, Thar stares into the fire. "Been meaning to tell you something," he begins, voice uncertain.
Before he can continue, a twig snaps in the darkness. Three bandits charge into the clearing.
Thar rises. Instead of reaching for his sword, he extends both hands. The air ripples. The bandits freeze mid-step, weapons dropping from their grip.
"Leave," Thar commands. "Forget this place."
The bandits' eyes glaze over. They turn and stumble away, expressions vacant.
"Secret talent," Thar says with a smirk entirely unlike him. "Useful, isn't it?"
His smile falters when he notices your expression.
Thar buys enough food for three people in the market, though he lives alone.
"Hungry lately," he explains, but at dinner he picks at his plate distractedly.
"Did you know," he begins enthusiastically, "that ancient civilizations used crystals to amplify mental energies? I remember when entire schools dedicated themselves to psychic development through mineral resonance!"
He catches himself, coughs awkwardly. "Just something I read."
A dropped fork glares back at him as if it offended. The utensil trembles, then rises an inch off the table before clattering back down.
Thar quickly covers it with his napkin. "Drafty in here."
You enter the smithy one morning to find Thar measuring his own teeth with calipers.
"Getting sharper," he mutters. "More pointed."
On his workbench lie tufts of white fur, alongside browner strands, as if he's been comparing samples.
"Ah! Hello!" He straightens quickly, adopting a casual pose that feels rehearsed. "Beautiful day, isn't it? I was thinking of closing early, perhaps visiting the library. They have fascinating texts on metallurgical processes that I've been meaning to–"
He stops, hearing himself. Closes his eyes.
"I mean. Need supplies. Going out."
As he passes, you notice his walk has changed. The heavy, rolling gait of a bear replaced by something more fluid and balanced. His tail, once a short tuft, appears longer beneath his trousers.
Thar freezes before a traveling puppeteer's show at the market. Children laugh as wooden figures dance. His face transforms with wonder.
"Amazing!" he exclaims. "The articulation of the joints! The manipulation of perspective!"
An elderly raccoon beside him nods. "Indeed, young fellow. Been watching puppet shows sixty years, and–"
"I remember when master puppeteers performed the entire creation myth with shadow puppets on the summer solstice," Thar interrupts. "The light manipulation was extraordinary!"
The raccoon squints at him. "Those traditions died out centuries ago, son."
Thar backs away, bumping into a cart.
"Thinking of a book I read," he mutters. "Excuse me."
At the tavern, he takes two plates to his private table. Sets two cups. Pours two drinks.
The barmaid raises an eyebrow but says nothing.
You watch from across the room as Thar argues with the empty chair across from him, gesturing emphatically. His expressions change rapidly, scowling one moment, animated the next.
"FINE! HAVE IT YOUR WAY," he finally says loudly enough to be heard. Several patrons turn to stare.
Thar notices the attention, hunches his shoulders. Drains both drinks quickly and leaves.
Through the wall again, two voices arguing in Thar's room.
"It's getting worse."
"I know."
"The memories are... they feel like mine now."
"And I can barely remember my father's face."
"I'm sorry about that."
"Are you? You're taking everything."
"Not intentionally! I'm losing things too. Do you think I enjoy this?"
"You're winning though. Look at my hands."
A pause.
"The muzzle too."
"I can feel something growing."
"What happens when there's nothing left of me?"
"I don't know. I didn't ask for this either."
"The dreams are getting worse."
"They're not dreams. They're my memories."
"All those people..."
"My people."
"They deserved better."
"Yes. They did."
Silence, then the sound of glass breaking.
"Your eyes..."
"What about them?"
"They're more gold than brown now."
A longer silence.
"We need help."
Thar cancels three commissions in a week. His appearance at the smithy becomes erratic. Customers whisper about strange noises from inside, heated arguments, though Thar works alone.
The tavern keeper reports Thar ordered dinner for two again, ate both portions, and left payment in unfamiliar handwriting.
You follow him through the marketplace. His height catches attention, taller than last month, his gait graceful despite his bulk. When he turns to examine fruit at a stall, his profile shows the unmistakable change, muzzle longer, ears higher on his head. The facial hair remains, meticulously groomed, an anchor to his former self.
A child points. "Mama, what kind of animal is that man?"
Thar drops his purchases and flees.
Crashes echo from Thar's quarters above the smithy. Glass shatters. Wood splinters. Shouts in two distinct voices grow louder.
The smithy door bangs open. Thar staggers out, clutching his head. His coat catches moonlight, not the brown of a bear, but cream-colored with hints of a developing ruff around his face.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" he roars, then immediately answers himself in a higher voice: "I CAN'T!"
He drops to his knees in the street. Neighbors peek from windows as Thar pounds the cobblestones with fists that shift and blur, thick bear digits one moment, more refined the next.
"Please," he whimpers. "Please stop."
He looks up, notices the audience, and scrambles back inside.
Morning brings silence from the smithy. No smoke from the forge chimney. No response to knocking.
Three days pass. The baker reports Thar bought enough bread for a small army, wild-eyed, coat matted. The innkeeper mentions Thar rented two rooms but used neither.
On the fourth night, through his window you glimpse Thar pacing. His proportions shock you, a bear's broad shoulders but a lion's longer limbs. His chest has developed into the beginnings of a mane. His tail, once bear-short, now swishes longer behind him.
He catches your gaze, freezes. Slams the shutters closed.
The sounds from Thar's room escalate beyond argument. Furniture crashes against walls. Glass explodes. A roar, not Thar's familiar bear growl or the higher voice that has haunted him, but something new. Something unified.
You shoulder the door open.
The creature standing amid shattered furniture turns toward you. Naked, its creamy coat gleams in the lamplight. Taller than Thar ever stood, broad-chested but with the lean musculature of a great cat. Its face holds elements of both bear and lion, the muzzle a perfect compromise, the ears higher than a bear's but rounder than a lion's. A partial mane frames its face, blending seamlessly with a well-groomed mustache.
Its eyes flash gold in the dim light.
"Nothing fits," it says, gesturing to torn clothing scattered across the floor. One hand, not quite bear, not quite lion, covers its groin. "Can't you knock?"
The creature's head twitches violently to one side. Its face contorts, muscles spasming beneath the fur. The right side of its mouth curls into Thar's familiar scowl while the left stretches into an unfamiliar smile.
"Sorry about–" It speaks in Thar's deep rumble, then the voice shifts mid-sentence to a higher pitch: "–the intrusion, we're still–" Back to the deeper voice: "–adjusting to–" Higher again: "–our new arrangement."
The creature shudders. Its form seems to ripple, the proportions shifting subtly as you watch. The mane recedes, then expands. Claws extend and retract without the hands moving.
"We had a disagreement about..." It gestures at itself. The movement starts precise, elegant, then turns into Thar's characteristic blunt gesture halfway through. "...everything."
It approaches the shattered mirror, stepping awkwardly on legs that can't decide their length. Bending to examine its reflection, it touches the mustache with trembling fingers.
"This stays," it says in Thar's voice.
"Agreed," it answers itself, higher-pitched.
The creature turns back to you. Both sides of its mouth now move in unison. "The process isn't complete. The body can't..." It winces. "...settle."
It takes a step toward you. Its left leg moves with feline grace while the right plants itself with ursine heaviness. The combination nearly topples it.
"You remember the ruin?" The voice slides between tones. "The corpse I touched?"
Claws clench and unclench. The right hand remains thicker, more bear-like. The left shows longer digits, more lion-like.
"His name was Oryum. A psion."
It slams a fist against its temple. "I remember his father teaching him crystal manipulation." A violent head shake. "No, I remember my father teaching me smithing."
The creature drops to its knees, coat rippling as muscle and bone continue their subtle realignment beneath.
"Too many memories," it groans. "Both sets feel real."
It looks up at you. Right eye brown with gold flecks. Left eye gold with brown flecks.
"Crystal-clear thoughts. Books without pages. Communities connected through mind alone."
Its muzzle lengthens slightly, then shortens, then settles at an intermediate length. The mustache remains perfectly groomed throughout.
"Oryum was brilliant," it says in the higher voice. "Sensitive. Curious."
"Thar was steady," it counters in the deeper tone. "Reliable. Strong."
"Together we are..." The voices merge, finding middle ground. "...something else."
The creature rises. Movement smooths out. Its body appears more integrated now, the violent shifts subsiding into subtle tremors.
"Thorm," it decides. "I am Thorm."
Thorm extends a hand toward you, claws sheathed, digits neither fully bear nor lion but something in between.
"Thar considered you a friend," it says. "Oryum has no friends left."
The hand hangs in the air. Waiting.
"Both need you now."
