The land of Hallownest covers a vast network of caves and tunnels in the middle of a wasteland. They are inhabited by both sentient and wild bugs, among other creatures. The caverns expanding below the cliffs are overgrown with luxuriant vegetation, and each with its own ecosystem. The leafy caverns of Greenpath and the groves of the Fungal Wastes were once tamed by the construction of roads, with the Pilgrim's Way as the main path leading from the Crossroads to the kingdom's capital. A bench in the Queen's GardensThe Queen's Gardens, originally part of Greenpath, were orderly built as a calm retreat for the White Lady. Without any maintenance, they were eventually smothered by overgrown vines. Similarly, Fog Canyon is infested with bulbous creatures and the Fungal Wastes with noxious mushrooms. The mountain's caves contain growing deposits of crystals, which used to be mined for the energy contained within them. Below lie the wide caves of Hallownest's Resting Grounds, filled with tombs and a subterranean lake. The kingdom's moths were responsible for managing these graves. Bordering the kingdom underground on one side is Deepnest, a dark network of cramped tunnels and chasms. On the other side, the city is sealed from the Kingdom's Edge and the Hive by a giant wall.Kingdom's Edge consists of a high chasm and wide caverns covered in perpetually falling white ash. The Hive is the artificial habitat built by a colony of bees. At the deepest point of Hallownest is the Ancient Basin, forgotten caverns where the Kingdom's monarch built his White Palace. The palace itself disappeared after the Infection returned. Further down is the Abyss at the heart of the lands' darkness, its entrance closed and sealed by the king himself.

Dirtmouth's town centreOn the surface, the lonely town of Dirtmouth is safely nestled in a valley between the Howling Cliffs and the Crystal Peak. Most travellers to the kingdom reached Dirtmouth via the King's Pass, before the bridge up to it crumbled away. The caverns below the town were heavily transformed into crossroads to allow transportation of bugs and goods across the land.
- #3City of Tears
Keys: City of Tears, Fountain Square
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Below the lake is the largest cavern in the lands occupied by the City of Tears, the kingdom's fallen capital. The lake's water pours down from cracks in the roof causing the city to be submerged in continuous rain. It rests upon the Royal Waterways, a network of pipes and cisterns to manage the city's waste.
The City of Tears is built in an enormous cavern below the Blue Lake. It has numerous large towers with expansive windows which offer views of the city. Going up and down these towers is possible via small lifts.
The city has a notable divide between the rich and poor part. The eastern side of the city is where Hallownest's high society lived. The interiors in this part of the City of Tears are more posh and luxurious and contain a red and purple colour pattern, while the west part's interiors appear to be more common and plain with more blue colour tones.

The Infection, sometimes referred to as the ancient sickness, bright light, or the plague, is the main antagonistic force in Hollow Knight, leading to the deaths of thousands of bugs and ultimately the downfall of the kingdom of Hallownest. HistoryArrival of the Pale KingBefore the arrival of the Pale King, the Moth Tribe worshipped their creator, a higher being called the Radiance. After the kingdom of Hallownest was founded, the Moths turned their backs to the Radiance and started worshipping the Pale King instead. Over time, they ended up forgetting about the Radiance.First wave of the Infection The gate to the City of Tears was closed in an attempt to stop the Infection from spreading However, the Radiance was not entirely forgotten, as memories of her still lingered. Eventually, bugs started to have dreams about the Radiance. This caused the Infection to appear for the first time. It started to manifest itself as bugs struggled against the Radiance's influence and tried to suppress it. The bugs of Hallownest tried all sorts of tricks, rituals, and prayers to stop the Infection, but none of these methods worked. Even the Five Great Knights did not know how to defeat a formless enemy such as the Infection. The Pale King decided to use a Vessel to seal the Radiance away which would stop the Infection. These Vessels were the Pale King and the White Lady's children, born in the Abyss with Void inside their shell. The chosen Vessel would be unaffected by the Radiance's influence, and would therefore be able to seal her indefinitely. In the end, the Hollow Knight was judged to be pure and chosen to become the Vessel who would seal the Radiance. Second wave of the Infection The Hollow Knight in Black EggHowever, the Hollow Knight turned out to be impure, tarnished by an idea instilled. Despite that, they were eventually sealed with the Radiance in the Temple of the Black Egg. Since the Hollow Knight was susceptible to the Radiance's influence, the Infection returned after some time, quickly devastating Hallownest and plunging the kingdom into ruin. Hallownest remained in ruin for a considerable amount of time until eventually the Hollow Knight's shell started to crack, amplifying the Infection and causing corpses to be reanimated. A path blocked by blobs of InfectionThe Knight returned to Hallownest after a call went out from either the Radiance or the Hollow Knight. After the Knight kills one of the Dreamers or acquires the Monarch Wings, the Infection from the Black Egg spreads and intensifies. Many creatures in the Forgotten Crossroads become mutated, bloated, and dripping with Infection. Blobs of Infection block various paths and a sharp sickly smell hangs in the air. During the Hollow Knight and Sealed Siblings endings, the Radiance and the Infection are sealed inside the Knight. In the Dream No More ending, the Radiance is consumed by the Void, stopping her influence on the dreams of Hallownest's inhabitants and putting an end to the Infection. Hornet watching vines of Infection lose their colour If the Knight defeats the Absolute Radiance in the Pantheon of Hallownest, the Absolute Radiance is completely destroyed by Void given Focus. As a result of this, during the Embrace the Void ending, Hornet watches vines of Infection shrivel up and lose their colour, thus marking the end of the Infection.ManifestationMental Myla becoming infected The Infection initially manifests itself through dreams, using desires and planting false hopes in the minds of bugs. Eventually, the Infection grows dominant in their minds, which are broken, and their wills enslaved. This allows the Radiance to exert control over the bugs overtaken by the Infection and make them become part of her union. As a result, they return to primal instincts and are driven mad, becoming much more courageous and aggressive. At advanced stages, they may even lose their sense of self-preservation, as seen with Belflies and Violent Husks. Some bugs managed to withstand the Infection. The Mantis Tribe actively resist it, which allows them to retain their intellect. Bardoon resists the Radiance's allure and went to a quiet place in Kingdom's Edge to get away from the Infected creatures whose minds were lost to the Radiance. Physical Infected reanimated bugs in the Infected CrossroadsThe Infection manifests itself physically in beings in several ways, generally depending on how far the Infection has progressed. What is true for all beings who are Infected is that they release splatters of orange fluid when struck, while non-Infected bugs release white particles. The eyes of most Infected beings glow orange, although this is not true for all of them. In later stages of the Infection, the body of the Infected being starts to deform. Their body becomes distorted, with orange growths covering their body and sometimes their entire body swelling up with Infection. Orange gas may also seep from the growths. While Infected beings may be weak by themselves, the Infection grants them strength and empowers them. Infected Balloons in Ancient Basin Besides its direct effect on bugs and creatures, the Infection manifests itself physically in other ways. Corpses can be reanimated by the Infection or by Infected lifeforms such as Lightseeds or flies It can also create single-celled lifeforms such as Infected Balloons.Lastly, the Infection can manifest as growths, vines, and noxious gas which cover the caverns.
- #7Hornet
Keys: Hornet, protector, princess
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Hornet is the mysterious princess-protector of Hallownest’s ruins, a major character in Hollow Knight and the protagonist of Hollow Knight: Silksong. She wields a needle and thread with deadly prowess. As a boss, Hornet appears in two forms, Hornet Protector in Greenpath and Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom's Edge. She must be defeated twice to unlock her Journal entry, but this can be either by defeating both forms or by defeating her Protector form once in Greenpath and once in Godmaster content Godhome.LoreHornet is the daughter of the Pale King and Herrah the Beast, the queen of Deepnest. Her birth was the result of a bargain for her mother to become a Dreamer, and as such, she spent only a short time with Herrah. Her shared father with the Knight and the rest of the Vessels makes them siblings. Raised in Deepnest, Hornet survived the Infection and the fall of the kingdom. She wanders its ruins, chasing off travelers who would seek to desecrate them, but also protecting the sealing of the Black Egg. She also guards the Cast-Off Shell in the Kingdom's Edge which can grant the King's Brand, the key to the Abyss. In her duties, she encountered Quirrel in the Howling Cliffs at his arrival in Hallownest. She attempted to fight him but was repelled by the mask of Monomon he wears on his head. Hornet leaves him be after recognizing the mask, knowing that he was called upon, despite him not knowing it. Like Quirrel and the Knight, she sensed the awakening of the Infection and started wandering Hallownest in search of answers. In Hollow Knight, she works to stop the impending doom looming on Hallownest. In Hollow Knight: Silksong, she ends up captured and brought to the haunted kingdom of Pharloom.In-game eventsHornet appears at first as a wandering and recurring antagonist to the Knight.
