Someone was just walking. One foot, then the next, brain on autopilot, shoulders loose, thoughts somewhere else.
Then the ground vanished.
It wasn’t a crack or a warning. It was a clean, sudden drop like the world opened its mouth and decided they were the bite.
Their stomach flipped and their body pitched forward, arms snapping out on instinct, fingers spread wide, grabbing at air that wasn’t there.
And that’s when the tentacles came.
Not from the ground itself. Not from the dark below. From the walls.
They didn’t rise. They didn’t reach. They were already there, packed into the sides like the hole had been lined with them from the start, tentacles pressed together in layers and folded like they’d been hiding in plain sight. The moment the body broke the rim, the walls peeled open and the tentacles snapped out with purpose. They were all different sizes and colors. There were so many of them.
Rough.
Impatient.
They caught the ankles first, not to stop the fall, but to steal the last chance of scrambling away. Tentacles locked like cuffs, digging through fabric, and the pull hit hard enough to make their hips jerk and their spine pop with a sharp, sick jolt. They didn’t slide in. They were taken.
They clawed at the edge, nails catching dirt, grabbing for anything, but the tentacles on the walls didn’t let them keep contact for more than a breath. One tentacle slammed over their wrist and yanked. Another hooked under their ribs and hauled. Something hard scraped across their forearm, skin tearing hot, and they gasped, the sound ripped out of them as the hole dragged them forward like a throat swallowing.
It felt wrong in the way the body knows before the mind can explain. There was no rhythm to it. No gravity. No clean drop. Just force. Sudden, brutal force, pulling at angles that made joints complain and muscles seize in instinctive resistance.
Their shoulder slammed the rim as they were pulled through and the pain rang bright, almost reassuring because pain at least made sense, pain at least meant physics still existed.
Then their chest cleared the lip.
And the hole tightened.
Tentacles grabbed their shirt in fistfuls and used it like a handle. They felt seams strain, felt fabric bite into their skin. Their boots scraped the dirt on the way down, and for a wild second their heel caught, like the world was giving them one last stupid chance.
A tentacle seized the boot and ripped.
The shoe didn’t come off. The body moved instead.
They went in sideways, twisted, dragged as if the hole wanted them to feel every inch of surrender. The wall of tentacles didn’t caress or cradle now. They hauled. They jerked. They pulled in short, violent tugs, as if they were impatient with the size of a human, annoyed that it took time to swallow one.
Their hands found the edge again and the relief was immediate, desperate, feral. Nails dug into dirt, and the friction burned and they clung hard enough to snap a nail. They pulled, panting, eyes wide, heart hammering, almost sobbing with the sick hope of escape.
Then the wall answered.
A tentacle slammed down over their knuckles.
Not gentle. Not curious.
A flat, hard tentacle that pinned their fingers to the rim like a warning.
The pressure increased. Bone ground against dirt. Their grip broke in a strangled, ugly sound that didn’t even make it all the way into a scream before the tentacles yanked again and the hole took the rest.
Their head went under last.
They saw the night sky for a heartbeat, a tilted circle of freedom above them, and then tentacles wrapped their throat and jaw, not choking, just controlling the angle, forcing their gaze away like they weren’t allowed to look at it anymore.
The rim clenched.
The hole closed.
Not like a lid. Not like a door.
Like a mouth sealing shut.
The tentacles started to rip at their clothing.
