Keys: backstory, the fall, how it started, outbreak, infection, before the fall, world history, pandemic, old world, harran

[WORLD LORE - THE FALL] Nearly forty years ago, the city of Harran became ground zero for what epidemiologists would later call the Harran Viral Agent — HVA. Initial reports were suppressed by both the Turkish government and the Global Relief Fund operating within the quarantine zone. What little footage escaped the blackout showed something the world was not prepared to accept: the dead, walking. Aggressive. Hungry.

The official story held for approximately eleven days.

By day twelve, seventeen new outbreak zones had been confirmed across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. By day thirty, the WHO had abandoned the term "isolated incident." The virus spread through bodily fluid contact and, in its airborne-mutated strain — designated HVA-3 — through prolonged exposure in enclosed spaces. The incubation window was brutal in its inconsistency: anywhere from six hours to three weeks, giving carriers ample time to flee quarantine zones and seed new ones.

Governments held on longer than anyone expected. NATO coordinated the so-called Green Zones — fortified urban centres deemed defensible — while rural populations were largely abandoned. Nuclear options were debated. Two were used; neither stopped anything.

The Alpine Corridor — the stretch of mountainous terrain spanning what was once the eastern cantons of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the western fringe of Austria — survived longer than almost anywhere else in Europe. The geography helped. Mountain passes froze. Small, isolated communities had time to fortify. The Swiss federal government managed a partial evacuation of Zurich and Bern into elevated strongholds before communications went dark.

They called this region the Holdfast. It wasn't a country anymore, not in any legal sense. But it was alive.

That was thirty-eight years ago. The people who remember Harran on a television screen are in their fifties, if they survived. Most of what the world was exists now only in the crumbling infrastructure the infected wander through — road signs in languages fewer people can read each year, overgrown motorways, collapsed border checkpoints that once separated nations nobody alive can quite remember the shape of.

The infected are simply called Freaks here, borrowing slang that drifted west from survivor radio chatter. The slow ones — Biters — are manageable. It is the Volatiles, creatures warped by decades of viral mutation, that have kept even the Holdfast from truly rebuilding. They own the night. They always have.

The world did not end. It just became something else.

2. #2Holdfast

Keys: the sprawl, the grey, where is this, region, holdfast, the cantons, where are we, the spine, the fringe, regions, the lakeshore, territory, map

[WORLD LORE - THE HOLDFAST: REGIONS] The Holdfast is not a nation. It has no flag, no unified government, no standing army that answers to a single authority. What it has is geography — and six distinct regions that have each found their own way to survive within it.

   ---

THE CANTONS The closest thing the Holdfast has to a political centre. A cluster of fortified mountain towns built into and around the ruins of the old Swiss eastern cantons — Graubünden, Glarus, and the remnants of St. Gallen. Governed by a loose council system called the Assembly, where each major settlement sends a representative. The Cantons are the most stable region in the Holdfast, the most populated, and the most politically fractious. Old world infrastructure here has been partially restored — running water in the larger settlements, limited electricity via hydroelectric salvage. The Assembly controls rationing, trade agreements, and what passes for law. Not everyone accepts their authority, but most accept their food.

   ---

THE SPINE The high alpine ridge running through the heart of the Holdfast. Brutal terrain, killing winters, and permanent snow above 2,000 metres. The Spine is the Holdfast's greatest natural defence — the infected slow dramatically in the cold, and Volatiles have never been documented above the snowline. It is also home to the Highwalkers: a loose culture of guides, traders, and scouts who have mastered the mountain passes and charge dearly for that knowledge. Crossing the Spine safely without a Highwalker is possible. Arriving at the other side is less so.

   ---

THE LAKESHORE Stretched along the northern edge of what was once Lake Zurich and the smaller Alpine lakes feeding into it, the Lakeshore is the Holdfast's lifeline for food and trade. Fishing communities built on stilts and repurposed docks have turned the water itself into a refuge — the infected cannot swim, and the lakes are wide enough that Volatiles rarely breach the waterline settlements. The Lakeshore towns are independent and proud of it, loosely affiliated with the Cantons but resistant to Assembly oversight. They trade fish, clean water, and lake-salvage for tools, medicine, and ammunition. A thriving black market operates on the water after dark.

   ---

THE SPRAWL The flatlands and valley floors that were once home to smaller towns and farmland before the Fall. The most contested and dangerous inhabited territory in the Holdfast. Survivor communities here are spread thin — farming collectives, scavenger camps, and fortified roadside settlements connected by a patchwork of cleared roads. The Sprawl feeds the Holdfast, quite literally; without its agricultural output, the Cantons would starve within two seasons. But the flat open terrain gives infected nowhere to be funnelled, and Freak population density here is the highest outside the Grey. Life in the Sprawl is harder, shorter, and louder than anywhere else in the region.

   ---

THE GREY What was once the city of Zurich — or what remains of it. Nobody calls it Zurich anymore. The Grey is a vast urban ruin stretching across the valley below the Cantons, swallowed by nearly four decades of unchecked decay and infestation. Buildings have partially collapsed. The underground network of old transit tunnels has become something nightmarish. The infected here are dense beyond practical count, and Volatile nests have been documented in the upper floors of what were once glass office towers. The Grey is not a place people live. It is a place people go to find things — medical supplies, pre-Fall technology, weapons, fuel — and either come back from or do not. Scavenger crews that specialise in Grey runs are some of the most respected and shortest-lived people in the Holdfast.

   ---

THE FRINGE The outermost edge of the Holdfast, where the mountains give way to the broader European ruin and the relative safety of known territory dissolves into the unknown. The Fringe is a shifting boundary — it moves inward when infected migration surges, outward when settlements manage to hold and push back. It is home to outcasts, exiles, independent operators, and those who have decided that Assembly law and Lakeshore politics are someone else's problem. The Fringe also attracts the desperate: people who arrived from outside the Holdfast, having walked or driven from places that no longer exist. What lies beyond the Fringe — deeper into the continent — is a subject of rumour, dread, and occasional obsession.

   [REGIONAL LORE - THE CANTONS]

   ---

OVERVIEW The Cantons are the beating heart of the Holdfast. Not glamorous. Not clean. But alive in a way that the rest of the region sometimes forgets is still possible. Spread across the elevated valleys and lower alpine slopes of what was once the eastern Swiss cantons, the region holds an estimated population of somewhere between thirty-two and thirty-eight thousand people — nobody has done a census in eleven years, and the last one was considered wildly optimistic by most. Of that number, roughly half live in or directly adjacent to the three major settlements. The rest are scattered across smaller outposts, farming hamlets, and road camps that technically fall under Canton jurisdiction and practically do whatever they want.

It is the most organised place in the Holdfast. That is both its greatest strength and its most exhausting quality.

   ---

   THE THREE MAJORS

CHUR (pop. ~9,000) The largest settlement in the Holdfast and the de facto capital, built into and around the ruins of the old Roman city of the same name. Chur sits at the northern end of a valley corridor with high rock walls on two sides — a geographic gift that the original survivors immediately recognised and never stopped being grateful for. The eastern approach is a choke point no wider than forty metres between two collapsed highway overpasses, both of which have been reinforced with salvaged steel plate, shipping containers welded end-to-end, and hand-poured concrete buttresses that took six years and three different engineering attempts to get right.

The architecture of Chur is a visual record of every decade since the Fall. At the centre — the Old Core — buildings dating back centuries still stand, their stone facades patched with mismatched brick and sheet metal where windows were bricked over or walls reinforced. Streets here are narrow, deliberately kept that way. Chokepoints within the settlement are considered a defensive feature, not an inconvenience. Upper floor walkways connect buildings on the main thoroughfares, constructed from scaffolding poles, reclaimed timber, and cable ties in the early years, now increasingly replaced with welded steel frames and wooden planking. People move above street level almost as often as below it.

The middle ring of Chur — built up over the last twenty-five years — is denser and less refined. Repurposed commercial buildings with their ground floors converted to communal housing, market stalls, and workshops. Glass has been almost entirely replaced with wooden shutters, translucent plastic sheeting salvaged from greenhouse operations, or simply left open with heavy curtain drapes. Ventilation is a constant tension — people want airflow in summer, but open windows at night make noise that carries, and noise attracts. There is an unspoken etiquette about it. Visitors learn fast.

The outer ring is newer, cruder, and more honest about what it is. A ring of residential structures — some prefabricated units dragged in on flatbeds, some built from the ground up using whatever was available — surrounded by a secondary perimeter wall of compacted earth, timber, and rubble that the locals call the Berm. It keeps the slow Freaks out well enough. It would not stop a Volatile surge. Everyone knows this. Most people choose not to say it out loud.

Chur smells like woodsmoke, motor oil, livestock, and bread. On market days it also smells like unwashed people and whatever passes for alcohol this season.

THUSIS (pop. ~5,500) Forty kilometres south of Chur, deeper into the valley system and higher in elevation. Thusis is smaller, colder, and more militarily minded. Where Chur is a city that learned to defend itself, Thusis was built as a defensive position from year one and expanded into a city later. The difference shows.

The settlement is arranged in concentric defensive bands — inner keep, mid settlement, outer work yards — all of it walled, all of it gate-controlled. Movement between bands requires passing a checkpoint. This sounds suffocating and in certain ways it is, but the residents of Thusis have a significantly lower casualty rate from breach incidents than anywhere else in the Cantons, and they will tell you so unprompted.

Architecture here is utilitarian bordering on austere. Buildings are low and broad to minimise wind exposure and reduce structural failure risk in heavy snowfall. Rooftops are load-bearing, most of them used as observation platforms, storage, or elevated gardens — cold-hardy vegetables, mostly. Kale. Root crops. Some greenhouse structures of salvaged glass and plastic sheeting that produce tomatoes and peppers with enormous effort and communal pride.

The people of Thusis are considered blunt even by Holdfast standards. They have a saying: walls save more lives than feelings. The Assembly representatives from Thusis are usually the ones proposing resource allocation cuts and expansion freezes. They are usually right and usually resented for it.

ILANZ (pop. ~4,200) The westernmost of the three majors, sitting at a river confluence that made it strategically valuable and logistically manageable in equal measure. Ilanz is the Cantons' primary manufacturing hub — not in any pre-Fall industrial sense, but in the way that matters now. Metalworking. Tool fabrication. Weapon maintenance and production. The town has three functioning forges and a small but operational machine shop running off a jury-rigged hydroelectric turbine in the river channel that powers maybe thirty percent of its equipment on a good day.

Ilanz also has the Cantons' largest medical facility: a converted hotel that has been serving as a hospital for thirty-one years, staffed by two trained doctors, seven trained nurses, and a rotating pool of apprentices learning from a combination of pre-Fall medical textbooks, passed-down practice, and hard experience. The building smells permanently of antiseptic and boiled linen. The waiting room has a mural painted on one wall by a child twenty years ago — bright colours, the kind only someone who never knew the old world would choose for a hospital — and nobody has ever painted over it.

   ---

ECONOMY The Canton economy runs on a tiered system that evolved organically and is now loosely codified by Assembly charter.

At the base level, everything essential is rationed communally: water, basic grain allocation, and medical access. Nobody pays for these. They are considered survival rights by Assembly decree, a ruling that was fought over bitterly in the early years and is now simply accepted as the bedrock of how things work.

Above that baseline, a functional market economy operates. Labour, specialist skills, crafted goods, salvaged materials, and food beyond the basic ration are traded and sold. The currency is a stamped metal token system — Canton Marks — introduced about twenty-two years ago to replace the barter system that was functional but exhausting. Canton Marks are made from a zinc alloy, stamped at the Ilanz forge, and accepted across all three majors and most affiliated outposts. They are not accepted in the Lakeshore towns, which have their own scrip, and are treated with varying degrees of suspicion in the Sprawl and the Fringe.

Key economic activities in the Cantons include salvage operations — both from the Grey and from minor ruins within day-trip range — agricultural output from the Sprawl settlements under Canton affiliation, livestock herding on the lower alpine meadows, hydroelectric power generation, manufacturing at Ilanz, and medicine production including the cultivation of specific medicinal plants in controlled greenhouse plots.

Fuel is the scarcest and most politically charged commodity in the Holdfast. The Cantons have limited reserves, maintained by strict rationing. Diesel and petrol are used almost exclusively for essential vehicle operations — supply runs, emergency response, heavy equipment. Nobody drives recreationally. The idea would strike most Canton residents as grotesque.

   ---

GOVERNANCE The Assembly meets monthly in Chur in a building that was once a municipal office and before that, according to the oldest residents, a bank. Seventeen seats. Each major settlement holds three. Affiliated outposts share the remaining seats on a rotating basis, an arrangement that creates constant low-level political friction and occasional shouting.

Decisions require a simple majority for routine matters and a two-thirds majority for anything involving resource reallocation, territorial expansion, or what the charter calls "matters of collective security" — a category broad enough that it gets argued about nearly every session.

Day-to-day law enforcement in the settlements is handled by the Wardens: a roughly two-hundred-strong organisation split across the three majors that handles everything from dispute resolution and market regulation to perimeter defence and breach response. Wardens are not soldiers, officially. They carry arms because everyone who goes outside the walls carries arms. The distinction matters to the Assembly and is ignored by everyone else.

The Assembly has no formal military, which is a source of ongoing tension. Thusis has argued for a standing army for fifteen years. Chur resists it, citing resource cost and the historical tendency of standing armies to develop opinions about governance. This argument has never been fully resolved. It probably never will be.

   ---

DAILY LIFE Waking up in the Cantons means waking up to bells. Not decorative ones — signal bells, the old Swiss church towers repurposed as communication infrastructure. One bell means shift change. Two means market open. Three means gate activity. A sustained ring means something nobody wants to hear.

Work is how people spend most of their daylight hours. There is very little unemployment in the Cantons because there is very little tolerance for it. Everyone contributes something: farming, construction, manufacturing, teaching, medical work, scavenging, security rotation. Children start apprenticeships at twelve. Most adults carry two overlapping roles — a primary trade and a secondary civic duty like wall maintenance or night watch rotation.

Evenings are social. Communal cooking is common in the denser residential areas — shared fuel, shared effort, shared food. It is both practical and cultural at this point. People who cook alone are quietly noted as either antisocial or struggling, and in close-knit communities both of these things eventually get addressed.

Entertainment is live, local, and mostly acoustic. There are three taverns in Chur, one in Thusis, two in Ilanz. Music happens most evenings somewhere. Story-trading — the practice of swapping accounts of runs, trips, events from outside the walls — is considered both entertainment and practical intelligence gathering. Good storytellers are valued people.

The thing visitors notice first about Canton residents is that they are simultaneously more relaxed and more watchful than people from anywhere else in the Holdfast. Relaxed because safety, relative to everywhere else, is real here. Watchful because they remember, or were taught by people who remember, exactly how quickly that changes.

4. #4The Spine

Keys: altitude, cold, mountain, breathing, peak, mountain pass, guides, alpine, elevation, snow, ridge, passes, spine, climbing, crossing, respirator, oxygen, high altitude, highwalkers, the spine

   [REGIONAL LORE - THE SPINE]

   ---

OVERVIEW The Spine is not a place people settle. It is a place people survive, and the distinction is not semantic. Running like a broken backbone through the geographic heart of the Holdfast, the high alpine ridge system — elevations ranging from 1,800 metres at its lowest accessible points to above 3,500 metres at the great peaks — is simultaneously the Holdfast's most reliable natural defence and its most indifferent killer. The infected slow to a crawl in sustained cold. Above the permanent snowline they have never been documented in any meaningful number. The Spine is, in that specific sense, the safest terrain in the Holdfast.

It will still kill you without a second thought. The mountain does not need to be hostile. It just needs to be itself.

The permanent population of the Spine is estimated at somewhere between two and three thousand people, spread across a network of high stations, ridge camps, and deep-cut valley shelters that most outsiders would not recognise as settlements at all. They are called Highwalkers — not a formal title, not an ethnicity, not a political identity. Just what they are. People who live above the rest of the world and have organised their entire existence around that fact.

   ---

   THE SETTLEMENTS

There are no cities on the Spine. There are no walls, no Assembly seats, no Warden patrols. What exists instead are stations — structures built low, built deep, built to survive weather that would strip the rooftops off anything in Chur within a season.

GREIFENHORST (the Grip) The largest Spine station and the closest thing the Highwalkers have to a central hub, positioned at approximately 2,100 metres in a natural rock shelter system expanded over three decades of continuous habitation. The Grip began as a single family's refuge — a pre-Fall mountain rescue station that a group of survivors sealed and expanded in the first years after the Fall. That original family's descendants still run it. Nobody voted them in charge. Nobody has successfully argued them out of it either.

The Grip holds perhaps four hundred permanent residents and functions as the primary waystation for anyone attempting a full Spine crossing. Its architecture is almost entirely subterranean or rock-integrated — chambers cut deeper into existing cave systems, reinforced with timber frames and corrugated metal sheeting salvaged from construction sites far below. Above ground, the visible structures are minimal and low-profile: ventilation stacks, a signal tower, the entrance to the main tunnel complex disguised behind a rockfall screen that takes knowing eyes to recognise as a door.

Heat comes from deep wood-burning systems that vent through the rock itself, a design refined over years by trial, error, and at least two near-catastrophic carbon monoxide incidents that are part of local oral history. Lighting is a mixture of salvaged battery lanterns, tallow candles, and a small wind turbine system on the upper ridge that provides inconsistent but treasured electric light to the main communal areas.

THE NEEDLES A chain of four smaller stations strung along the highest traversable ridge line, spaced roughly a day's travel apart for an experienced Highwalker and two to three for anyone else. Each Needle station is a single-structure shelter — stone and rammed earth, timber-framed, built to hold between fifteen and thirty people in reasonable conditions and twice that in an emergency. They are stocked seasonally with preserved food, fuel, medical supplies, and replacement equipment by rotating teams from the Grip. Using a Needle station without permission is technically theft. Practically speaking, nobody who stumbles into one dying of exposure is refused, and no Highwalker would expect them to be. The unwritten rule is: you use it, you restock what you can, you report what you took to the Grip on your way through.

THE DEEP STATIONS Further from the main traverse routes, less known, less discussed. Perhaps half a dozen permanent shelters built into the most inaccessible terrain on the Spine by Highwalker families who wanted distance even from other Highwalkers. Some of them trade. Some of them don't. Some have not had a visitor in years and that is precisely the intention.

   ---

   BREATHING AT ALTITUDE

This is the practical fact that governs everything about life on the Spine: above roughly 2,400 metres, sustained physical activity without respiratory support becomes increasingly dangerous. The human body adapts over time — Highwalkers born and raised at elevation have measurably higher red blood cell counts and expanded lung capacity compared to valley people, a difference noticeable enough that Ilanz physicians have documented it in the last decade — but adaptation has limits, and outsiders have none of it.

The Highwalkers addressed this problem themselves, out of necessity, approximately twenty-five years ago.

THE SPINE RESPIRATOR What is now called the Spine Respirator began as a crude modification of pre-Fall industrial dust masks combined with salvaged medical oxygen delivery components. The current design — refined across multiple generations of builders and now produced in three workshops at the Grip — is a half-face unit covering nose and mouth, constructed from moulded leather hardened with a pine resin treatment, fitted with replaceable filter cartridges and a connection port for supplemental oxygen feed.

The filter system alone is valuable. Even without oxygen supplementation it screens particulate matter, cold air shock to the lungs, and the ice crystal content of high-altitude wind that causes progressive lung damage in unprotected long-term residents. Every permanent Spine resident above 2,000 metres owns at least two. Children are fitted for their first one before they can walk independently.

The oxygen component uses a compression and storage system engineered around salvaged dive equipment, medical oxygen cylinders, and hand-operated compression pumps. The Grip runs two compression stations continuously. Filled tanks are the single most valuable trade commodity the Spine produces — compact, essential, and impossible to manufacture anywhere in the Holdfast outside of Spine workshops because the knowledge to build the compression rigs simply does not exist elsewhere yet, and the Highwalkers have not been especially motivated to share it.

A full tank runs approximately four to six hours of supplemental use depending on activity level and altitude. The tanks themselves are standardised — the Highwalkers made this decision deliberately about fifteen years ago, replacing the chaotic variety of early salvage-adapted containers with a single uniform design that can be serviced, refilled, and exchanged at any Spine station. The standardisation decision is considered the single most consequential economic move in Spine history. It turned a survival tool into a currency.

Spine Respirators and filled oxygen tanks are traded to all six Holdfast regions. The Cantons are the primary buyer — Chur alone runs a standing monthly order for thirty filled units used by their own Warden long-range teams and Grey runners. The Lakeshore towns buy them for deep salvage operations in partially flooded or gas-compromised structures. Even the Fringe, chaotic and unaffiliated as it is, sees a steady trickle of Spine equipment moving through its trading posts.

The Highwalkers do not sell the means of production. They sell the product. This is not accidental.

   ---

   CLIMBING CULTURE

Movement on the Spine is a technical discipline treated with the same seriousness that the Cantons treat wall construction or Ilanz treats forge work. Knowing how to climb — really climb, not just scramble up a slope — is the foundational skill of Highwalker life. Children begin learning on low training faces near the Grip as early as age five. By adolescence, most Spine-born residents can free climb routes that would stop a skilled outsider cold.

The methodology is practical, not athletic. Highwalkers do not climb for sport. They climb because the terrain requires it, because the passes require it, because the fastest and safest route between two points on the Spine is almost always vertical at some point. Techniques are passed down within family lines and workshop groups — specific sequences for specific faces, the holds that look solid and aren't, the cracks that take a cam perfectly, the traverse routes that work in summer and become death sentences after first snowfall.

Rope work, anchor building, reading rock and ice, reading weather — these are considered basic literacy on the Spine. Someone who cannot do these things is considered as limited as someone in Chur who cannot read a market sign.

TEACHING OUTSIDERS Highwalkers do not teach climbing to strangers. This is not law, not policy, not even a formal cultural rule — it is simply the default, the way things are, the unspoken starting position of every Highwalker when an outsider asks. The reasons are layered: knowledge is leverage, leverage is survival, and the Spine's relative safety depends in part on not everyone knowing how to reach it.

There are exceptions. Trusted outsiders — people with established trade relationships, people vouched for by respected Highwalkers, people who have proven themselves over multiple seasons of honest dealing — can earn an introduction to climbing instruction. It is informal, never advertised, and always framed as personal favour rather than service transaction. A guide might take someone onto the low training faces for a season and call it helping out. Nothing is written down.

   Then there are the others.

Not every Highwalker shares the community's instinct toward insularity. A minority — difficult to count, since they operate quietly and the Grip's leadership prefers not to acknowledge them too loudly — will teach for payment. Currency or services, negotiated privately, no vouching required, no season-long relationship building necessary. They tend to operate out of the smaller stations or the Fringe-adjacent lower reaches of the Spine where the Grip's social oversight is thinner. Their instruction is not necessarily worse. In some cases it is more thorough, because it is their livelihood rather than a favour.

The established Highwalker community views these individuals with a mixture of contempt and pragmatic tolerance. Contempt because selling the knowledge feels like selling access to the Spine itself. Tolerance because most of them still follow the unspoken rule: teach the techniques, not the routes. An outsider who learns to climb but does not know which face leads to which station, which ridge line is traversable in which season, which rock formations serve as navigation markers — they have a skill but not the map. The map lives only in the heads of people who grew up here.

Some of the freelance teachers have begun, quietly, to sell partial route information as well. This is where the community's tolerance ends and things become complicated.

   ---

ECONOMY The Spine economy is built on three pillars: respirator equipment production, guiding services, and specific high-altitude goods available nowhere else.

Guiding is the oldest and most personal of these. A Spine guide contracting to lead a group through a mountain pass charges in Canton Marks, Lakeshore scrip, fuel, medicine, or — most valuably — information. Intelligence about conditions in the wider world beyond the Fringe, news from regions the Highwalkers cannot reach themselves, technical knowledge from Ilanz workshops. Good information is worth a crossing. Exceptional information is worth two.

Beyond respirators, the Spine produces a specific range of high-altitude resources that carry value across the Holdfast. Certain medicinal mosses and cold-adapted plants harvested from the upper meadows, processed by Grip workshops into treatments for respiratory illness and frostbite damage. Dried high-altitude game — ibex and chamois, which have thrived in the absence of traditional hunting pressure. The pelts and bones of these animals are traded for manufacturing components and fuel. Ice, clean and parasite-free, harvested from the permanent glacier systems and transported down in insulated containers for medical use and food preservation in the lower settlements.

There is no formal market on the Spine in the Canton sense. Trade happens at the Grip, at the Needles, at agreed meeting points on the lower approaches. It is conducted face to face, often by the same families who have traded with the same Canton representatives for a generation. Relationships here function as contracts. Breaking one is remembered longer than any formal legal dispute in Chur.

   ---

THE LINES Before the Grip's leadership ever considered teaching outsiders to climb, they solved the outsider problem a different way. If valley people could not move through the Spine safely on their own, the Spine would move them.

The zipline network — called the Lines by everyone in the Holdfast — began as a single emergency traverse rigged between two Needle stations roughly thirty years ago using salvaged steel cable and a hand-brake system built from a vehicle disc rotor. It worked well enough that it got extended. Then extended again. Then copied between other stations by other Highwalkers who saw the logic immediately.

The current network spans eleven primary lines connecting the Grip to four of the five Needle stations, with three secondary branch lines reaching the lower approach points where valley traders typically wait. The longest single run is just over nine hundred metres and drops nearly three hundred metres in elevation — a crossing that takes an experienced rider approximately forty seconds and leaves most first-timers unable to speak for several minutes afterward. Not from fear, necessarily. From the simple fact of what it is: open air, open mountain, the whole valley floor visible below in grey-white silence, moving faster than anything on the Spine ever moves.

The infrastructure is maintained obsessively. Cable tension is checked on a rolling weekly schedule by dedicated maintenance teams — the most unglamorous and most essential job on the Spine. Anchor points are rock-bolted into the most solid faces the Highwalkers could find, reinforced every few years, inspected after every significant weather event. The brake systems have been redesigned four times in thirty years, each iteration safer and more controllable than the last. The current design uses a friction clamp mechanism with a spring-loaded failsafe that automatically slows descent if the rider loses grip — an addition made after an incident nobody in the Grip discusses in detail but everyone above a certain age remembers.

The trolleys — the running gear that attaches rider to cable — are manufactured at the Grip. A standard trolley is a welded steel frame with a double-wheel system straddling the cable, a rigid crossbar for handhold, and a secondary harness attachment point. Riders clip their climbing harness to this point. Outsiders without a harness are fitted with a loaner chest-and-waist rig before they are allowed anywhere near a launch platform. This is not optional. It has never been negotiable.

FOR OUTSIDERS The Lines are the official route. Any valley trader, Canton envoy, Lakeshore runner, or Fringe wanderer who arrives at the lower approach points and wants to cross the Spine will be directed to the Lines. They will not be told about climbing routes. They will not be offered alternatives. They will be taken to the nearest launch platform, given a safety briefing that is thorough precisely because the consequences of not listening are immediate and irreversible, strapped in, and sent across.

Most people, even those who came expecting to hate it, find the crossing extraordinary. The mountain looks different from inside it rather than below it. The cold at speed is a different kind of cold — clean, direct, impossible to ignore. Arriving at a Needle station with your heart hammering and your face completely numb, with a Highwalker already reaching to help you unclip and pointing you wordlessly toward the shelter and a hot drink, is an experience that becomes a story people tell for years.

The Lines are also, not incidentally, how the Spine controls traffic. Every crossing is logged at the Grip — who came through, when, where they were going, what they were carrying. There are no formal customs duties, no toll in the Canton sense, but the information is recorded and remembered. The Highwalkers know exactly who has crossed the Spine in the last decade. They know roughly what people brought with them and what they took away. This is not surveillance in any aggressive sense. It is simply the Spine doing what the Spine has always done: paying close attention to its environment.

Anyone attempting to cross without using the Lines — attempting a ground traverse through the passes without a guide and without using the official route — is not stopped. The mountain handles that.

DAILY LIFE Days on the Spine begin before light because in winter the light is brief and every hour of it is operational time. The rhythm is dictated entirely by weather and altitude — two things that can change faster than any human planning accounts for. Highwalkers develop an instinctive meteorological sense over years that outsiders frequently mistake for superstition. It is not. It is pattern recognition built from a lifetime of consequences.

Clothing is layered, repaired constantly, and treated as equipment rather than personal expression. The exception is the climbing harness — a Highwalker's harness is the most personalised piece of kit they own, adjusted and modified over years until it fits like a second skeleton. Many are partially handmade. Some have been in continuous use, component by component replaced as needed, for decades. There is a quiet pride in a harness that has seen real work.

Social life at the Grip is tighter and quieter than anything in the Cantons. Communal meals in the main cave chamber. Stories told in the dark when weather pins everyone inside — not the dramatic adventure stories of Canton taverns, but technical ones. Route conditions. Ice changes. Rock fall patterns. The conversation of people who treat their environment as both home and opponent and have been paying close attention to it their entire lives.

Children on the Spine grow up with a specific relationship to silence and stillness that people from the lower regions sometimes find unnerving. They are not unfriendly. They are simply accustomed to a world where noise carries in ways that matter, where stillness is information, and where patience is not a virtue but a technical skill.

Looking down from the Spine on a clear day — at the valley settlements, the distant smudge of the Grey, the glint of the lakes — the world below looks quieter than it is. Smaller. More manageable. Every Highwalker knows this is an illusion. They also know it is a useful one.

5. #5The Lakeshore

Keys: shore, harvest, quota, winter, bandits, lakeshore, water settlement, lake, water, fishing, lakeside, tide, docks, stilts, community, nets, sprawl, haul, birthday, fish, festival, boat

   [REGIONAL LORE - THE LAKESHORE]

OVERVIEW The Lakeshore is not one place. It never was and it never tried to be. Scattered across the broad surface of what was once Lake Zurich and the four smaller alpine lakes feeding into it from the south, the Lakeshore settlements sit on the water itself — on stilts, on salvaged pontoons, on repurposed marina infrastructure dragged into position over decades and gradually built upward and outward until something resembling permanence emerged. From a distance, on a grey morning with mist sitting low on the water, they look like floating villages from a world that never quite existed. Up close they look like exactly what they are: hard-won, weatherbeaten, absolutely alive.

Total population across all Lakeshore settlements is estimated at around eleven to fourteen thousand people. Nobody is entirely sure because the settlements are spread across a lot of water and some of the smallest ones prefer it that way. There is no central authority. No Assembly equivalent, no charter, no elected council. What there is instead is a web of relationships, obligations, shared memory, and the understanding — bone deep, never spoken because it does not need to be — that the water keeps everyone alive and the water does not care about anyone individually.

The infected cannot swim. This single fact is the foundation of everything the Lakeshore is.

Volatiles, faster and more dangerous than anything else the Holdfast produces, are equally helpless at the waterline. There are accounts — older ones, from the early years — of Volatiles running the shoreline at night, agitated, unable to reach the lights they could see on the water. The Lakeshore's founders watched this from their first floating platforms and understood immediately that they had found something the rest of the Holdfast would spend decades trying to build with walls and concrete: genuine safety after dark. Not comfort, necessarily. Not ease. But the particular quiet that comes from knowing nothing is coming for you tonight.

This changes the culture of the Lakeshore more than anything else. People here have slept through full nights, consistently, for most of their lives. The psychological difference between the Lakeshore and anywhere else in the Holdfast is not something that can be explained to someone who has never experienced it. You can see it in how they carry themselves. Less coiled. Less immediately ready. Not soft — life on the water is not soft — but genuinely, functionally relaxed in a way that people from the Cantons or the Sprawl sometimes find almost disorienting.

   THE SETTLEMENTS

HALDENSEE (pop. ~2,800) The largest Lakeshore settlement and the closest thing the region has to a hub, built across a wide section of the main lake's northern basin where the original marina infrastructure was dense enough to serve as a foundation for real construction. Haldensee sprawls across roughly forty floating platforms of varying size connected by a network of rope bridges, plank walkways, and in the central section, fixed timber bridges wide enough for two people to pass comfortably.

The structures themselves are a visual history of every decade since the Fall. The oldest buildings are low, cramped, and built from whatever floated — reclaimed timber, salvaged fibreglass hull sections, corrugated sheeting. The newer construction, built by people who had time and resource and slightly more structural knowledge, is taller and more considered. Two-storey buildings with covered porches facing the water. Communal hall structures with wide-open sides that catch the lake breeze in summer and shutter completely in winter. Rooftop flat sections used for net drying, fish smoking, and in the evenings, sitting.

Haldensee smells like fish and woodsmoke and rope and, on certain days when the wind comes from the east, faintly like pine from the tree line on the far shore. It is not an unpleasant smell. Most people who have spent time there associate it with safety, which does something to how they remember it.

SEEGARTEN (pop. ~1,900) South of Haldensee on the upper lake, Seegarten is older, smaller, and more deliberately isolated. It was founded by a single extended family group and has grown by careful invitation over four decades rather than organic migration. Newcomers to Seegarten are assessed, formally and frankly, before being permitted to tie up. This sounds harsh. The people of Seegarten would tell you it is kind — they maintain a standard of communal function that keeps everyone fed and that standard requires honesty about what a person can contribute.

Seegarten specialises in deep-water fishing. The upper lake is colder and deeper than the northern basin and holds different fish — larger, less abundant, harder to catch, significantly more valuable in trade. The boats out of Seegarten are the best-maintained and most technically refined in the Lakeshore, and the fishing knowledge held by its families is guarded with the same instinct the Highwalkers have for route information.

SPLITTERHOLM (pop. ~600) Three connected platforms on the eastern lake, the smallest of the named settlements and the hardest to reach. Splitterholm is known for two things: the best smoked fish in the Holdfast, and a curing and preservation operation that supplies not just local settlements but sends regular stock to the Cantons and occasionally as far as the Fringe. The smoking process uses a specific combination of lakeside reed, alder wood, and local herb that the residents claim is not a secret but which nobody else has successfully replicated.

THE SCATTER Beyond the three named settlements, perhaps forty to sixty smaller platforms, anchored boats converted to permanent habitation, and tiny island structures exist across the lakes. Some hold single families. Some hold a handful of people who chose distance from community life for reasons they may or may not share. Collectively called the Scatter, these outlying habitations are part of the Lakeshore in the way that a fringe thread is part of a rope — attached, connected by common experience and mutual understanding, but not integrated into any centre.

People from the Scatter come into Haldensee for supply runs, for festivals, for medical attention, for company when the isolation becomes too much. They leave again when they need to. Nobody tracks this. Nobody expects otherwise.

   ECONOMY

The Lakeshore economy is fish. Everything else is context.

Fish is food, fish is trade currency, fish is the metric by which every settlement, every boat crew, and every individual measures themselves and each other. The Canton Marks accepted across the rest of the Holdfast circulate here but are secondary to the fish economy in the way that a second language is secondary — functional, useful, not the one you think in.

THE QUOTA Every settlement, every boat crew, every independent fisher on the Scatter operates against the Quota. Not a formal imposition by any authority — nobody has the standing to impose anything on the Lakeshore — but a collectively understood survival mathematics. A rough calculation, refined over decades, of how much preserved fish stock needs to exist by the end of autumn to carry the settlement population through winter, accounting for low-yield weeks, spoilage, the cost of trading for essential supplies, and a buffer that gets argued about every year but always ends up roughly the same size.

Missing the Quota is not a crime. It is a disaster. Settlements that look like they are falling short of Quota before autumn ends become very serious places very fast. The community work ethic — always present, always visible — sharpens to something close to grim. Shifts get longer. Celebrations pause. Every able body that can be on a boat is on a boat.

Making the Quota is cause for relief rather than celebration. Exceeding it comfortably is cause for celebration. Exceeding it substantially — a banner season, a great haul year — is cause for the kind of celebration that people on the Lakeshore are, frankly, extremely good at.

TRADE Beyond feeding themselves the Lakeshore trades preserved fish, fresh water, lake-salvage goods, and specialist boat maintenance services to the rest of the Holdfast. The Canton relationship is the most formalised — a seasonal supply agreement that exchanges fish stock and water for tools, medicine, and fuel. The Spine relationship is older and more personal: specific Highwalker families have traded with specific Lakeshore families for two generations, exchanging fish for respirator equipment and dried mountain goods on a handshake basis that predates any formal trade structure in the Holdfast.

The black market that operates on the water after dark — mentioned in wider Holdfast accounts in passing, never detailed — is not really a secret. It is simply trade that happens outside the Canton Mark system, in goods that the Assembly would prefer to track and the traders involved prefer to move quietly. Salvage from the Grey brought in by runners who do not want Canton customs logging what they found. Spine equipment obtained through the freelance teachers rather than official channels. Substances the Assembly does not officially recognise. Information. The lake is wide and the night is dark and the Lakeshore has never been especially interested in what the Cantons think is appropriate.

   ---

   THE BANDITS

The Sprawl borders the Lakeshore at several points where the flat farmland approaches the shoreline. Most of what comes from the Sprawl is trade, labour, and the occasional desperate family looking for somewhere safer to be. Some of what comes from the Sprawl is armed and looking for an easier life at someone else's expense.

Lakeshore settlements on the near-shore are raided occasionally. Not constantly, not even frequently in a given year, but enough that every settlement maintains watch rotations on the shore-facing approaches and enough that everyone on the Lakeshore has a plan for what they do when the alarm goes out. The plan is simple: get to the water. Everything of value that can be moved floats. Most of the population can be on boats within minutes. A raiding party that reaches a partially evacuated Lakeshore settlement finds a collection of empty buildings and a community watching from fifty metres offshore with crossbows and expressions of profound calm.

The harder problem is the shore infrastructure — the docks, the smoking houses, the net storage. These can be damaged or burned. Rebuilding them is collective work and takes time. The Lakeshore's attitude toward bandit raids is less fear than it is weary, practical irritation. The same energy someone in Chur puts into complaining about Assembly politics.

   ---

   SOCIAL LIFE AND CULTURE

The Lakeshore has a reputation across the Holdfast for being the only region where people seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves on a regular basis. This reputation is mostly accurate and the Lakeshore does nothing to discourage it.

The practical reason is the nights. When you are not spending half your existence either dreading dark or surviving it, you have energy left over. That energy goes into food, music, other people. The Lakeshore has developed a food culture that the rest of the Holdfast respects and quietly envies — fish prepared in a dozen ways, lake greens, preserved fruits traded from the Cantons, the particular communal cooking style that comes from generations of people cooking on boats and platforms where space is limited and sharing is not optional.

THE HARVEST EVENTS Three to four times per year, timed roughly to the fishing seasons, Haldensee hosts a Harvest — a two to three day community celebration that draws people from every Lakeshore settlement including the Scatter, and in recent years has attracted traders and travellers from the Cantons, the Spine, and even the Sprawl who plan their travel routes specifically to be in range when the Harvest calendar goes out.

A Harvest is part festival, part market, part communal assessment of where everyone stands. Fish is eaten in extraordinary quantity. Whatever alcohol the settlements have accumulated is distributed freely, within the understanding that everyone is still responsible for their own platform's safety and watch rotations. Music runs continuously — the Lakeshore produces more working musicians per capita than anywhere else in the Holdfast, a result of the long winter evenings on the water where there is nothing to do but play. Instrument styles range from salvaged pre-Fall guitars in various states of repair to entirely handmade percussion, wind instruments constructed from pipe and reed, and at least three people in Haldensee who play something resembling a fiddle well enough that people stop what they are doing to listen.

The Harvest market is where real commerce happens. Trades agreed over the course of the year are formalised. New relationships are established. People from the Scatter who have spent months in isolation re-enter the social world of the community, sometimes visibly relieved and sometimes visibly overwhelmed. Children born since the last Harvest are presented to the wider community in a tradition that involves the child being passed along a chain of every adult present and welcomed by name. Some families travel from Chur specifically to attend this, because the Cantons have nothing quite like it.

PUBLIC BIRTHDAYS Birthdays are community events on the Lakeshore. Not surprise parties. Not intimate family dinners. Public acknowledgement, announced on the morning signal, celebrated communally in the evening. The person whose birthday it is cooks — or organises the cooking — of a communal meal that anyone can join. The community brings what they have. It is considered bad form to show up to someone's birthday empty-handed and nobody does, even when times are thin, because showing up to someone's birthday empty-handed is the kind of thing that gets remembered in a community where everyone knows everyone and that memory never quite leaves.

Nobody celebrates alone on the Lakeshore. This is not a rule. It is simply not a thing that happens.

ACCEPTANCE AND BELONGING The Lakeshore's relationship with outsiders follows a logic that feels casual and is actually quite precise.

Anyone who arrives — from the Sprawl, from the Cantons, from somewhere further and harder to name — is fed. This is not negotiable and not conditional. You arrive hungry, you get fed. This is the floor. It does not make you part of anything.

If you can work on the water — if you can handle a boat, read conditions, pull a net, contribute meaningfully to the daily function of the settlement — you are useful. People are friendly to useful people. You will be given work and fair return for it. You might stay a season. You might stay longer. People will know your name and mean it when they say it.

If you can fish — really fish, not just sit in a boat, but read the lake, know the depth lines, come back with something worth smoking — the tone changes. Eyes meet yours differently. People make space at the communal table without being asked. You are not family yet but you are something. You are someone the Lakeshore is considering.

A great haul changes everything. One extraordinary catch — the kind that makes the quota math suddenly comfortable, the kind that feeds the whole platform for a week, the kind that gets talked about at the next Harvest — and you belong. Not conditionally. Not on probation. The Lakeshore does not have a ceremony for it. There is no formal moment. It is simply that the next morning people treat you differently and you feel it and everyone understands what it means.

This is the Lakeshore's deepest value, more fundamental than the Harvest or the birthday traditions or the communal meals: what you give to the water, you give to everyone. And what you give to everyone comes back.

[REGIONAL LORE - THE SPRAWL AND THE GHOST RIDERS]

   ---

THE SPRAWL: OVERVIEW The Sprawl is the Holdfast's middle ground in every sense of the word. Not elevated enough to be safe like the Spine, not fortified enough to be stable like the Cantons, not insulated by water like the Lakeshore. The Sprawl is open land — flat valley floors, overgrown farmland, old road networks, collapsed towns, and everything in between. It is the most dangerous consistently inhabited region in the Holdfast and simultaneously its most important. Without the Sprawl's agricultural output, the Cantons starve. Without the Sprawl's road networks, trade between regions slows to a crawl. Without the Sprawl's communities — stubborn, battered, perpetually refusing to simply give up — the Holdfast loses its connective tissue.

Population is difficult to estimate precisely because the Sprawl does not hold still. Settlements appear, grow, shrink, relocate after raids or Freak surges, merge with neighbouring camps. A rough count puts permanent residents somewhere above eighteen thousand, making it the most populated region in the Holdfast by raw number, spread thinnest across the most ground.

Life in the Sprawl is loud. Loud in the way that danger makes things loud — always a generator running, always a watch post occupied, always someone moving between points with purpose and a weapon on their back. The silence of the Lakeshore and the cold quiet of the Spine do not exist here. In the Sprawl, silence means something is wrong.

The Freak density on open ground is the highest in the Holdfast outside of the Grey. Biter clusters form around any consistent food or noise source. Volatile activity, while less predictable than in urban ruins, spikes badly in the summer months when the warmth pushes them further from whatever dark places they occupy during the day. Sprawl settlements are walled where they can be, fenced where they cannot, and perpetually watching.

The Sprawl is also where the Ghost Riders live. This fact alone shapes everything about how the region functions.

   ---

   THE GHOST RIDERS: ORIGIN

Fifty years ago, before the Fall had a name, before the Holdfast existed, before any of what the world became was even imaginable — there was a biker gang called the Ghost Riders.

By pre-Fall standards they were notorious. A large, wealthy, tightly organised club with chapters across central Europe and a reputation that kept most people at a respectful distance. They were not criminals in the organised sense, though they operated in the grey edges of the law with comfortable familiarity. They were, more than anything, a brotherhood. People who had chosen each other over the world the world had offered them, and who had built something durable around that choice.

When the Harran broadcasts started coming in — fragmented, terrifying, then nothing — the Ghost Riders did something nobody expected. Not even themselves, maybe. They did not run. They did not hole up and wait to see how things shook out. They mobilised.

Within the first week of what they were already calling the Fall, Ghost Rider chapters across the region were running supply convoys — fuel, medicine, food — to communities that had no means to help themselves. Their bikes could move faster than any government response. Their network of contacts and safe houses across the region gave them logistics that nothing official could match. Their membership, people who had spent years learning to function outside of conventional social structures, adapted to the collapse faster than almost anyone.

They lost people. A lot of people. But they saved more.

Over the following fifteen years they became something the pre-Fall world had no real category for: a gang that functioned as an emergency service, a justice system, and a community anchor simultaneously. The Ghost Riders were the people you called when the infected came through your fence and the people you called when your neighbour stole your winter stores. They were not government. They were not militia. They were something older than both — a code that moved on wheels.

They amassed respect the way they had previously amassed reputation. Widely and fast.

   ---

   THE GREAT WAR: THE FRACTURE

Fifteen years after the Fall, with the Holdfast still being named and the Sprawl still being settled, something broke.

It broke along the line that had always existed inside the Ghost Riders between two men and two visions of what they were.

JASON believed the Ghost Riders were guardians. That their role was to serve the regions, to fill the void left where law and protection had collapsed, to remain connected to the communities they had helped survive. That justice was not a weapon but a responsibility. That the work they did had to be done carefully, with consideration, with the understanding that the people they served were not subjects but the entire point.

KIERAN believed the Ghost Riders had earned something. That fifteen years of sacrifice and blood had demonstrated beyond any argument that the Ghost Riders were uniquely capable of maintaining order, and that maintaining order required authority — real authority, enforced authority, the kind that did not ask permission. That the Holdfast needed structure and the Ghost Riders were the only ones positioned to provide it. That kindness without power was just sentiment.

Both of them were right about parts of things. Neither of them could see the other's part.

The fracture did not happen in a meeting room. It happened on a road, over a dispute about how to handle a settlement that had turned away Ghost Rider arbitration. Kieran's response was to ride in with numbers. Jason's response was to ride in and talk. When it was over, the settlement had been burned — Kieran's doing — and two Ghost Riders were dead by other Ghost Riders' hands for the first time in the organisation's history.

The Great War that followed lasted three years and ravaged the Sprawl in ways the region is still recovering from. Kieran's faction — the Vengeant, as they would come to call themselves — numbered approximately seven thousand riders. A significant portion of them were fast-tracked recruits, people brought in quickly to build numbers, long on loyalty to Kieran and shorter on the deep institutional knowledge of the old Ghost Riders. They were formidable in mass.

Jason's faction — the Justiciers — numbered barely twelve hundred. These were the long-term members, the ones who had been there from the beginning or close to it. Experienced, disciplined, deeply committed, and outgunned by any conventional measure.

The Great War did not end with a victory. It ended with a stalemate that both sides recognised, after three years of burning roads and riders fighting riders across the flat Sprawl ground, as the only outcome possible. A territorial and operational ceasefire was negotiated on neutral ground — accounts differ on the exact terms and the exact location, which has become something of a myth in its own right — and the Ghost Riders formally split.

Two factions. One name between them. Forty years of common history that neither side is willing to surrender and neither side discusses easily.

   ---

   THE SPIRITS OF JUSTICE (JUSTICIERS)

What Jason built — and what has continued after him, through whoever has held the Grand Marshal position since — is an organisation defined by the principle that justice requires understanding before it requires action. The Justiciers are not soft. Nobody who has survived decades on the road making enemies of some of the most dangerous people in the Holdfast is soft. But they are deliberate. They investigate. They listen to multiple accounts. They recognise that situations exist in shades and that the blunt application of force to complexity produces injustice as often as it produces justice.

A Justicier Grand Marshal has lit the fire of every Officer in the faction for forty years. The flame is blue — the colour chosen by Jason himself in the early days of the split, reportedly because it burned cooler and longer than red. Whether this was practical or symbolic nobody can quite agree on, which is itself very Justicier.

Justiciers are generally received warmly across all six regions. In the Cantons they work alongside the Wardens in an uneasy but functional parallel — the Assembly does not formally recognise Ghost Rider jurisdiction but has never been in a strong enough position to challenge it directly, so the relationship is one of mutual pretence that everyone is operating in their own lane. In the Lakeshore they are welcome guests. In the Spine the Highwalkers have a specific and respectful relationship with Justiciers, who are among the few outsiders permitted to learn partial route information. In the Fringe they are sometimes the only law that exists.

   SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE (VENGEANT)

What Kieran built is something more complicated. The Vengeant are not the corrupt, aimless organisation that Justicier propaganda sometimes paints them as. They hold the same code. They uphold the same two laws: protect the innocent, uphold rightness. They light the fire, pass the exams, carry the Colt. They kill Volatiles to rank up the same as every Ghost Rider does.

What they are is less forgiving. The Vengeant came out of the Great War with the understanding — shaped by Kieran's vision and reinforced by forty years of operating independently — that hesitation costs lives. That the grey areas Justiciers deliberate over are often just delays that allow guilty people to cause more harm. That fear of power is a luxury that the Holdfast cannot afford.

A Vengeant riding into a settlement with a crime to adjudicate is a different experience than a Justicier arriving. Vengeant move with a weight that people feel before anything is said. Their exhaust flames are red-orange and the aesthetic of their bikes, their gear, their presence — leans harder and darker than the Justicier equivalent. They are not beloved the way Justiciers are. They are respected in the way that something capable of real harm is respected, which is its own kind of power.

The Vengeant's greater numbers mean they have broader territorial coverage across the Sprawl and the Fringe. Their fast-tracked membership lineage means their Officer-level riders are on average less experienced than Justicier Officers of equivalent years, which the Justiciers know and the Vengeant resent.

   ---

THE LADDER OF THE BURNING PATH: RANKS

Both factions share the same six-rank hierarchy without exception or variation. This common structure is considered by historians of the Holdfast to be the primary reason the split did not destroy the Ghost Riders as a functional institution — whatever divided Jason and Kieran, they built from the same bones and both factions have maintained those bones with near-religious fidelity.

ACOLYTE / PETITIONER (The Unburnt) The beginning. No fire. No Colt. No authority.

An Acolyte has been accepted into the faction — a process itself not guaranteed and not trivial — and given a copy of the Book. Acolytes do everything that needs doing that no one else wants to do: maintenance on senior riders' bikes, supply runs, perimeter watch at faction camps, and study. Constant study. The Book of Justice and Vengeance is not light reading. It is pre-Fall legal codes recontextualised and expanded through decades of practical application, written and revised by every Grand Marshal since the beginning. It is also, if read carefully, a history of the Ghost Riders in the form of legal precedent — every major case they have ever handled, anonymised but traceable by those who know the history.

Acolytes are called Unburnt. It is not an insult. It is a statement of current position on a journey with a defined destination. Most Acolytes accept it with the patience of people who know exactly what they are working toward.

OFFICER (The Anointed) Ten exams. Each one written, graded personally by the Grand Marshal of the faction — not delegated, not reviewed by proxy. The Grand Marshal reads every answer. This is a logistical commitment that some have questioned over the decades and that every Grand Marshal has maintained, because the alternative is a faction where the highest rank is not personally accountable for who it lets carry the Colt.

Passing all ten earns two things: the Anointing of the bike and the issuing of the Colt.

The bike Anointing is the formal ceremony in which the Grand Marshal lights the exhaust flame — blue for Justice, red-orange for Vengeance — for the first time. The flame system is built into every Ghost Rider bike as standard, engineered through the faction's own mechanics workshop. Until the Grand Marshal personally lights it, it does not run. This is technically a fuel-line lockout that requires a specific ignition key the Grand Marshal holds. The mythology has grown around it over fifty years to be considerably larger than the mechanical reality, which suits everyone fine.

The Colt is the Ghost Rider's sidearm. A long-barrelled revolver produced entirely in-house by faction gunsmiths, a design evolved over fifty years from pre-Fall components into something that is now entirely the Ghost Riders' own. The frame is engraved — a tradition begun in the early days and never abandoned — with the faction insignia and the new Officer's designation. The wooden grips are fitted to the individual rider's hand. No two Colts are identical. They are not interchangeable and are not intended to be. The Colt is a personal weapon in a way that goes beyond function. Every Ghost Rider knows that when they look at their Colt they are holding something made specifically for them, by hands that understood what it would be used for.

Officers carry the Colt as standard sidearm, a shotgun in the saddle scabbard, and an assault rifle across the back. This is the full Officer loadout. It changes in configuration by preference at higher ranks but the Colt remains constant at every level. Senior Ghost Riders have been offered pre-Fall handguns of objectively superior technical specification and declined. The Colt is not about specification.

ARBITER (The Travelling Judge) The rank that ordinary Holdfast citizens encounter most often. An Arbiter is a fully seasoned Ghost Rider operating without oversight — no mentor, no supervisor, no check-in schedule. They ride their assigned territory, respond to calls, investigate crimes, hand down judgment.

The Arbiter's authority is accepted across every Holdfast region because it has been earned across five decades of consistent operation. The Cantons have their Wardens and their Assembly courts, but even there, if a Ghost Rider Arbiter rides into a matter, the local authority typically steps back. Not because they are forced to. Because the track record is long enough that resistance feels more stubborn than principled.

An Arbiter's judgment is final. They can sentence, exile, imprison — in settlements with the facility for it — or execute. They do not report the execution up the chain for approval. The Book covers when execution is the appropriate sentence and the Arbiter is expected to know the Book well enough not to need permission.

VINDICATOR (The Elite Enforcer) A decade on the road, minimum. At least one Great Grievance resolved — a crime of sufficient scale that it affected a whole community or implicated a person of significant power. Vindicators are visibly different from Arbiters in a way that people who know Ghost Riders can read immediately — in how they hold themselves, in the specific wear pattern of someone who has spent ten plus years on a bike through every season the Holdfast produces, in a particular economy of movement that comes from having been in enough situations that urgency no longer requires performance.

Vindicators often operate at the junction between Ghost Rider work and regional politics — the cases that have implications beyond a single settlement, the conflicts between Sprawl bandit organisations and Lakeshore trade routes, the corruption within Canton-affiliated outposts that the Wardens have found too inconvenient to address.

HIGH INQUISITOR (The Hand of the Law) The coordinators. While every other rank on the Ladder is defined by what the individual rider does in the field, the High Inquisitor's primary function is network — maintaining the web of communication between Arbiters and Vindicators across regions, identifying patterns that no individual rider could see from their own territory, and hunting Rogue Riders.

A Rogue Rider is a Ghost Rider who has abandoned the code — gone criminal, gone mercenary, or simply stopped operating within the Book's framework and started operating within their own. The Ghost Riders do not ignore this. The Ghost Riders do not defer it to external authorities. The High Inquisitors handle it, personally and permanently. The existence of this function is one reason the faction's reputation has held — the mechanism for self-policing is visible, active, and not merely theoretical.

There are perhaps thirty to forty High Inquisitors across both factions combined. They are not widely known by face. Their rank insignia is deliberately understated. They move through the Holdfast more quietly than any other Ghost Rider, which should feel contradictory and does not once you understand the work.

GRAND MARSHAL (The Sovereign of the Sprawl) Two in existence at any time. One for Justice. One for Vengeance.

The Grand Marshal is the living embodiment of the faction's code. Not an administrator, not a politician — a rider, still active, still taking cases when the case is significant enough, still capable of everything the rank requires. The physical demands of reaching Grand Marshal are the specific reason for this: a Grand Marshal has personally killed in excess of twenty Volatiles in documented combat over the course of their career. This number is not ceremonial. It is the cumulative record of every rank-up kill from Officer through High Inquisitor. By the time a rider reaches Grand Marshal they are among the most experienced Volatile hunters alive in the Holdfast.

Volatiles kill experienced people. They kill fast, they kill in the dark, and they do not tire. The twenty-kill minimum necessary to reach Grand Marshal is a number that the wider Holdfast understands in the abstract and Ghost Riders understand in the specific — in the particular weight of two decades worth of nights where the worst thing in the world found you and you found it first. Even within the tensions between Justicier and Vengeant, both factions regard the opposing Grand Marshal with a level of respect that transcends faction politics. They have earned the same thing the hard way.

The Grand Marshal lights fires. Grades exams. Hunts Rogues when the High Inquisitors require it. And carries a Colt that has been in continuous use since their Anointing, worn to the exact shape of their grip over decades of use.

   ---

   THE BIKES

Every Ghost Rider bike is built on the same foundational design — a heavy custom chopper, low and long, with a visual language that sits somewhere between industrial and skeletal. The aesthetic was established by the original Ghost Riders in the pre-Fall years and has been maintained and evolved through fifty years of in-house fabrication. The bikes are not salvaged or adapted — they are built, by Ghost Rider mechanics, from sourced and traded components assembled according to faction specifications. The chassis design has gone through four major revisions over five decades but the visual identity has remained consistent: low-slung, wide, heavier than anything practical, unmistakeable.

The exhaust flame system runs from twin pipes flanking the rear wheel and a secondary vent below the front cowling. In Justicier bikes the flame burns blue — a steady, cooler burn that is consistent and controlled. In Vengeant bikes the flame runs red-orange — hotter, brighter, more variable depending on throttle. Both are visible from a significant distance in low light. At night a Ghost Rider bike approaching on an open Sprawl road is identifiable from over a kilometre away. This is not a flaw in the design.

The bikes are maintained with a dedication that borders on ritual. An Officer whose bike is in poor condition is the subject of genuine social concern within the faction — not judgment exactly, but attention. The bike is the role made physical. How you keep it reflects how you keep the work.

   ---

   THE BRANDS

When a Ghost Rider is Anointed — when the exams are passed, the Colt is issued, and the Grand Marshal lights the fire — the ceremony does not end there. Before the rider leaves, before they take their first case as an Officer, they are branded.

Not tattooed. Branded. Iron to skin, the way the old world did not do things and the Holdfast does not flinch from. The Ghost Riders have been doing it since the third year after the Fall, when a Grand Marshal whose name appears more times than any other in the Book decided that a code worth dying for was worth carrying on your body permanently and visibly. The tradition has not lapsed once in the decades since.

The branding takes place the morning after the Anointing, when the fire of the previous night has settled and the new Officer has slept — or tried to. The Grand Marshal does not perform the brands personally. That is the work of the faction's brand-keeper, a specific role that exists at every major Ghost Rider camp, passed down through apprenticeship with the same care as any other skilled trade. The Grand Marshal witnesses. The witnessing is the part that matters.

THE VENGEANT BRANDS A Vengeant Officer receives three brands across their first year of active service, not all at once — the body needs time between each, and the Vengeant believe the spacing is intentional, that each brand should be earned through active work rather than given all at once at a ceremony.

The first brand is placed on the chest at Anointing: devil horns, stylised and bold, centred over the sternum. Large enough to be seen when the jacket is open. The design has been standardised for forty years but each brand-keeper brings their own hand to the work — no two are identical in the fine detail, which is considered correct.

The second brand comes after the first adjudicated case is closed: a verse from the Book of Justice and Vengeance, chosen by the Officer themselves from the Book's text, running across the upper back between the shoulder blades. The choice of verse is considered revealing. Senior Vengeant pay attention to which verse a new Officer selects. It tells them something about how the rider thinks before that rider has enough history to show it directly.

The third brand, the arm brands — both deltoids, matching — comes at the six-month mark of active service. The devil horn motif repeated, smaller, flanking both arms. After this the Officer is considered fully marked. A Vengeant without all three brands is either very new or has interrupted service behind them, and either way people notice.

The combined effect, when a Vengeant Officer removes their jacket or opens their shirt, is striking. The brands are not subtle and not intended to be. They are a declaration made in scar tissue that has been carried willingly.

THE JUSTICIER BRANDS A Justicier Officer receives all their brands at Anointing, in a single extended ceremony that can last several hours and which the entire camp attends as witness. The Justicier tradition holds that the marks should be given whole — that a Justicier Officer steps into the full weight of the role at once rather than incrementally, and their body should reflect that.

The primary brand covers the back: angel wings, spread wide from the spine outward across both shoulder blades, the feather detail worked in with a finer iron than most brands require and taking the longest to complete. The design is the most complex brand in either faction's tradition. It is also the oldest, predating the split, carried forward from the original Ghost Riders' early marking practices. Jason did not invent the angel wings. He kept them. The Vengeant abandoned them. The Justiciers have worn them since before the factions had names.

The chest brand is a skull, centred, roughly the width of a spread hand. The skull design went through several iterations in the early decades and was standardised approximately twenty-five years ago into the current version — clean, symmetrical, neither menacing nor decorative. A fact stated plainly. Justiciers describe it as a reminder rather than a warning. Of what exactly, they tend not to elaborate on, which is itself very Justicier.

The delt brands, flanking both upper arms, carry shorter verse fragments from the Book — one on each arm, selected not by the Officer but by the Grand Marshal, based on what the Grand Marshal read in the ten exam answers. A Justicier Grand Marshal chooses the verse for every new Officer personally, from everything the exams revealed about how that person thinks. The Officer does not know what their verse will be until it is already in their skin. Some consider this the most significant moment of the entire Anointing — the Grand Marshal's assessment of who you are, permanently written on your body in your own scar tissue.

First-time encounters between a marked Justicier and someone who has never seen the brands before tend to stop the conversation briefly. The wing spread across the back is large, detailed, and immediately legible as something that required endurance to receive. Combined with the skull on the chest it produces an image that sits in the specific territory between sacred and dangerous that the Justiciers, probably deliberately, have always occupied.

READING THE MARKS Across the Holdfast, being able to read Ghost Rider brands is practical knowledge. A Vengeant chest brand visible above an open collar means something specific. Justicier wings glimpsed through a torn jacket mean something else. The brands are how Ghost Riders identify each other in the field without words — in a crowded Lakeshore Harvest market, in a Grey salvage exchange, in a Fringe settlement where announcing your faction affiliation out loud might be premature. You look. You know. You proceed accordingly.

What you also learn to read, if you know the system, is rank. Because every rank advancement adds to what is already there. Not subtle modifications. More brands — larger, more detailed, more time in the brand-keeper's chair. A freshly Anointed Officer carries the foundational marks and nothing else. An Arbiter who has spent years on the road carries those same marks plus the rank additions that have accumulated since, each one a visual record of what they survived to earn.

Arbiter rank brands extend the foundational design outward — for Vengeant, the devil horn motif begins to spread down the forearms, paired with a second verse fragment added below the first on the back. For Justiciers, additional feather detail is worked into the wing spread, extending it further down the back, and a secondary verse added beneath the skull on the chest.

Vindicator brands are where the work becomes genuinely significant in scope. By this rank a Vengeant's arms from shoulder to wrist are substantially covered — the horn motif carried all the way down, interspersed with verse fragments and geometric border work. A Justicier Vindicator has a back piece that is, by any measure, one of the most complex pieces of brand work in the Holdfast — the wings now fully detailed from neck to lower back, the feather work dense and precise, the kind of thing that takes two full sessions with the brand-keeper and leaves the rider off active duty for a week of recovery.

High Inquisitors are marked on the neck. Both factions. A single band of brand work running the circumference of the throat, below the jawline. The design differs between factions — a Vengeant High Inquisitor's neck band incorporates the horn motif brought upward to its final destination; a Justicier's incorporates a fine feather detail that completes the wings as if they have risen up the entire body to frame the face. The neck brand is visible always. It cannot be covered without deliberate effort. High Inquisitors do not cover it.

The Grand Marshal carries all of it. Every rank's additions, accumulated over a career that by definition spans decades. By the time a rider reaches Grand Marshal their skin is a complete record of everything the Ladder of the Burning Path asked of them and everything they gave back. A Grand Marshal without a shirt is not a comfortable thing to be unprepared for. The brands cover most of the torso, both arms fully, the back completely, and the neck. The face is never touched. The hands are never touched. Both factions hold this as absolute — the face and hands remain unmarked because the face is who you were before the code and the hands are how you carry it out. Both things stay clean.

   THE CODE AND THE BOOK

The Book of Justice and Vengeance is both legal document and founding text. First compiled by the original Ghost Riders from pre-Fall legal codes — Swiss federal law, European human rights frameworks, common law principles from multiple traditions — then expanded across fifty years of practical application into something that is now its own system entirely.

The Book is not short. The full text runs to several hundred pages, handwritten in the original and now reproduced by faction scribes into standard copies. Every Acolyte receives one on their first day. Every Grand Marshal adds to it over their tenure. Legal precedents set by Grand Marshal adjudications are included. Specific cases — anonymised but structured as illustrative examples — make up roughly a third of the total text.

The ten exams cover: knowledge of the Book's legal framework, application of law to case studies, rules of evidence, sentencing guidelines, the specific conditions for capital punishment, the handling of minors in both victim and perpetrator roles, jurisdiction questions involving multiple regions, the treatment of mentally incapacitated individuals, the rights of the accused during Ghost Rider adjudication, and an open case analysis that the Grand Marshal grades entirely on reasoning quality rather than specific conclusion.

The Vengeant exams weight the sentencing and capital punishment sections most heavily. The Justicier exams weight the case analysis and evidence sections. Both factions will deny that there is any meaningful difference in the examination process.

THE GHOST RIDERS AND THE HOLDFAST

Outside of the Cantons — which maintain their own parallel system with varying degrees of diplomatic tension — the Ghost Riders are the closest thing the Holdfast has to a justice system. In the Sprawl, they are omnipresent. In the Lakeshore, they are occasional visitors who are received with something between respect and relief. On the Spine, the Highwalkers have their own arrangements but do not resist Ghost Rider jurisdiction when it follows them down to the lower stations. In the Fringe, they are sometimes the only structure that exists at all.

The two-law code — protect the innocent, uphold rightness — sounds simple. Ghost Riders will tell you it is not simple. It is just clear. The Holdfast has had forty years to see what happens when it is applied consistently, imperfectly, across six difficult regions by people willing to die for it.

The flames still burn. Blue and red-orange, on roads that run through all of it.

   [REGIONAL LORE - THE GREY]

   ---

OVERVIEW Nobody calls it Zurich anymore.

The oldest residents of the Cantons — the ones in their seventies and eighties who were born into the Holdfast rather than the world before it — sometimes pause when pressed on the name. They have heard it. Their parents said it. A city. A real one, the kind the old world produced in numbers that nobody quite comprehends now: millions of people in a single urban system, stacked vertically, spread horizontally, interconnected by underground rail and overground road and a thousand invisible logistical threads that kept the whole thing breathing. It had a name. Most people have let it go the way you let go of things that no longer serve any practical purpose, which is gradually and without ceremony.

They call it the Grey because of what it looks like from elevation. From the Spine on a clear morning, from the high Cantonal observation posts on the ridge lines, from the upper platform of Haldensee's tallest structure on the right kind of day — the city sits in the valley below like a stain. Not black. Not quite. Grey. The particular colour of a thing that was once active and is now perfectly, absolutely still. Forty years of weather and vine and slow structural collapse have not softened it. They have just changed the texture of the stillness.

The Grey is the largest ruin in the Holdfast by orders of magnitude. Conservative estimates — built from decades of perimeter observation, scout reports, and the accounts of those few who have gone in and come back — put the infected population within the city boundaries at somewhere between three and five million individual Freaks. This number is difficult to verify because nobody has been in a position to count and the ones who might have been were not in a position to report back. What is known is that the Grey contains more infected than every other Holdfast region combined, concentrated into a relatively defined urban footprint, layered through every floor of every structure from basement to rooftop.

The Grey is not a place. It is a condition. It is what happens when a city of millions becomes a city of millions of the dead, given forty years to settle into it.

   ---

   THE CITY ITSELF

The scale is the first thing that defeats comprehension for anyone approaching for the first time. Even from the perimeter — the ragged edge where the Sprawl's outermost settlements give way to overgrown suburb and the city proper begins — the skyline is visible. High-rise towers, dozens of them, some still structurally intact, some leaning, some partially collapsed into neighbouring structures in slow-motion failures that happened over years rather than moments. The tallest standing structure is estimated at over two hundred metres. What it was — office tower, residential block, something else entirely — is no longer legible from the outside. Its glass facade is long gone, floors open to the air on multiple sides, the interior colonised by forty years of plant growth and whatever has found shelter within.

The architecture of the Grey covers every category the old world built in. It is all present, in various states of decomposition, layered into each other in the way that dense cities build — eras of construction visible in cross-section where buildings have partially collapsed to reveal the older structures they replaced or absorbed.

THE RESIDENTIAL ZONES The outer rings of the Grey are predominantly residential. Single-family homes consumed by vegetation, their gardens long since gone feral and their interiors dark and damp and full of the slow accumulated damage of four decades without maintenance. Apartment blocks eight to twenty storeys tall, their stairwells serving as vertical highways for infected movement between floors, their hallways still containing the archaeological remnants of the lives that ended there — furniture, clothing, personal objects, the specific quietness of rooms that were abandoned mid-moment and never returned to. Dormitory structures from the universities, still in distinct clusters near the institutional zone, their communal rooms long since stripped of anything soft by forty years of rot.

The residential zones are the most navigable part of the Grey for the rare person who enters. Streets here are suburban in width — overgrown, cracked, split by root systems from trees that have had four decades to work at pavement — but passable on foot if the infected density is manageable on a given approach. The buildings are lower and the sightlines are better than the city centre. This is relevant because in the Grey, sightlines are survival.

THE COMMERCIAL ZONES Shopping centres — vast internal structures, their skylights collapsed in several places, their interiors now dim cavern spaces of rusted shelving and forty-year-old product packaging turned to compressed mulch. Office towers in the mid-rise band, six to twenty floors, their ground floors accessible through gaps in collapsed facade glass, their upper floors increasingly compromised structurally. Hotels, their lobbies magnificent in the specific way of catastrophic decay — chandeliers still hanging in some, the dust of four decades lying undisturbed on reception counters, signage in languages that fewer Holdfast residents read each passing year.

The commercial zones hold the most salvage value and the highest risk concentration simultaneously. Pre-Fall medical supplies in pharmacy back rooms. Sealed industrial chemicals in loading bays. Electronic components in office supply stores whose sealed packaging has preserved them past all reasonable expectation. Tools. Hardware. The kind of dense practical salvage that makes a runner's hands shake a little when they think about it from the safety of fifty kilometres away.

What the commercial zones also hold is noise amplification. The enclosed structures — shopping centres especially — channel sound in ways that make every footstep a broadcast. Infected density in the commercial zone is higher than in the residential ring because the large internal spaces allow congregation, and forty years of congregation has produced clusters in the thousands in some of the larger mall structures. Scavengers who have been in and come back describe entering a large commercial building in the Grey as the specific experience of knowing with certainty that you are outnumbered by a number you cannot see yet.

THE INDUSTRIAL ZONES The outer south-eastern edge of the Grey holds the remnants of the city's industrial infrastructure — factories, processing plants, warehouses, power generation facilities. These structures are lower, broader, and significantly more robust than the residential and commercial zones. Reinforced concrete and steel construction that has weathered forty years better than glass and drywall. Several of the larger warehouse structures are believed to be substantially intact internally.

The industrial zone is also the most structurally unpredictable part of the Grey. Forty years of chemical degradation in processing facilities has produced environments that are dangerous in ways that have nothing to do with infected — compromised air quality, unstable flooring over deteriorated sub-structure, sealed areas containing pressure buildup from decomposing materials. Runners who work the industrial zone carry Spine respirators as a matter of absolute necessity. The ones who learned this the hard way are the ones who survived to pass the information on.

THE INSTITUTIONAL ZONE Hospitals. Universities. Schools. Libraries. Government buildings.

This is the part of the Grey that every serious scavenger thinks about and most never reach. The potential salvage in the hospital complexes alone — sealed pharmaceutical storage, surgical equipment, laboratory supplies — represents more medical resource than the entire Holdfast currently has access to combined. This is not speculation. It is the conservative estimate of Ilanz's medical staff, who have been told about it for decades and have learned to discuss it with the specific flat affect of people who have made peace with something they cannot change.

Reaching the institutional zone requires passing through approximately four kilometres of densely infected urban terrain from the nearest viable entry point. The hospital complexes are located in the mid-city band, surrounded by residential high-rises that create channel corridors with no exit options. The university district is adjacent and slightly more accessible from the north-western approach but sits beneath a collapsed elevated roadway section that blocks the two most direct routes.

The libraries are intact. This is confirmed by perimeter scope observation — their lower windows visible, their signage still legible to those old enough to read the language. Forty years of books, sealed indoors, inaccessible. This particular fact produces a specific kind of grief in certain Canton residents that they do not always know how to explain.

THE ASSEMBLY SPACES Theatres, stadiums, museums, places of worship. These structures are identifiable from the perimeter by their rooflines — dome shapes, the specific pitch of a stadium roof, the vertical profile of a cathedral. The sports stadium in the city's southern district is visible from several kilometres away, its outer facade still largely intact, its interior reported by distant observation to contain what appears to be one of the largest single Volatile nesting concentrations in the Grey. The upper tiers are believed to be occupied year-round. Nobody has verified this from inside and nobody is planning to.

The cathedral — or what is assumed to be the cathedral based on its profile — is in the historical core of the city, surrounded by some of the oldest stone construction in the Grey. Stone buildings do not collapse the way steel and glass do. The historical core is structurally more intact than most of the surrounding city while being among the most densely infected areas, the narrow medieval street layout channelling and concentrating infected movement in ways that newer urban design does not.

THE HIGH-RISES The towers are their own category.

Buildings above thirty floors — and there are perhaps twenty of them still standing at various heights — represent the Grey's most extreme vertical environment. Their upper floors are above the ambient infected noise level. Wind. Light. Genuine silence, the kind that does not exist anywhere else in the Grey. Ghost Riders who have operated in the city's upper vertical describe the experience of a high-floor in a stable tower as one of the most surreal in the Holdfast: standing in a room that has been undisturbed for forty years, looking out at a skyline of equivalent towers, the infected city spread below inaudible from that height, the entire Holdfast visible on clear days from horizon to horizon.

Getting there is the problem. The stairwells of high-rise buildings are vertical traps — one entrance, linear movement, no lateral escape options. Infected do not climb with purpose but they accumulate in stairwells through random movement over decades, and clearing a thirty-floor stairwell is a project of several hours minimum under the best conditions.

The Volatile nesting preference for upper floors is the other problem. What the stadiums are for ground-level Volatile concentration, the high-rises are for vertical. Upper floors of towers are considered near-certain Volatile territory, particularly above floor twenty. The specific acoustic quality of a building that size — the way wind moves through open floors, the echo characteristics of large internal spaces — appears to suit them. Confirmed Volatile nests have been documented in seven of the standing towers by Ghost Rider scouts operating at extreme perimeter range with optics.

   ---

   THE INFECTED

The infected of the Grey are not the same as infected encountered elsewhere in the Holdfast. They are the same in biology — the same HVA variant, the same fundamental behaviour — but forty years of dense concentration in an urban environment has produced behavioural patterns that rural and suburban infected do not exhibit.

Herd movement. The Grey's infected move in loose coordinated masses, not because they communicate or organise in any conscious sense, but because the density is high enough that individual movement creates waves — one infected disturbed sets off those adjacent, which sets off those adjacent to them, and the signal propagates outward through millions of individuals in a slow rolling wave that experienced observers have described as watching water move. Entering the Grey and creating a disturbance does not produce a localised response. It produces a city-wide one, building slowly, arriving in full weight minutes later.

The Grey's Volatiles are a distinct concern even from the broader Volatile population of the Holdfast. Forty years of dense prey concentration — three to five million slow infected as a permanent food source — has produced Volatiles that are larger and more aggressive on average than those encountered in the Sprawl or the Fringe. The nesting concentrations are also larger. Individual Volatiles outside the Grey typically operate in groups of two to five. Grey Volatiles have been documented in groups of twenty or more, operating with a pack coherence that single-region Volatiles do not display.

   ---

   SCAVENGING THE GREY

People go in. Some come back.

The ones who come back tend to operate on the absolute perimeter — the outermost residential blocks, accessible in theory within an hour of the entry point and an hour back, daylight only, Spine respirators mandatory, at least four people per team with two designated as noise management and two as retrieval. The rule observed by every experienced Grey runner is a hard turnaround time regardless of what they have found. The city does not reward extended presence. The longer you stay the more certain it becomes that the movement wave you created getting in has had time to build into something you cannot move through getting out.

Deeper penetration into the Grey — the commercial zone, the institutional district, anywhere near the city centre — is an operation that requires days of planning, significant resources, and a willingness to accept odds that most rational people find difficult to justify. The salvage potential is extraordinary. The survival rate of deep-penetration runs is documented by the Ghost Riders at somewhere below thirty percent for teams attempting to reach the institutional zone and not significantly higher for commercial zone targets.

Ghost Rider Volatile hunts in the Grey are a different operation entirely. Not salvage-focused, not time-limited in the salvage sense — a Ghost Rider entering the Grey for a Volatile hunt is there for a specific target, operating with the movement and noise discipline of someone trained for exactly this environment, carrying sufficient armament to handle what they find and sufficient experience to manage what they did not expect to find. The Grey is where Ghost Riders go to rank up when accessible Volatile populations in the wider Holdfast are not sufficient. It is also where Ghost Riders go to prove something, which is a different and more dangerous motivation.

   ---

   THE FORMER GRAND MARSHAL

The accounts exist. They are considered credible by anyone who knows the source.

Approximately twelve years ago, the then-Grand Marshal of the Spirits of Justice — a rider who had held the position for nine years and whose career accounted for more documented Volatile kills than any other Ghost Rider in the faction's history — entered the Grey alone. Not for a specific target. Not for a specific duration. A scouting operation, self-assigned, that lasted eleven days.

What was mapped during those eleven days — rough charcoal on salvaged paper, annotated in a hand that was apparently remarkably steady given the circumstances — is the closest thing the Holdfast has to a genuine map of the Grey's interior. Entry routes. Infected density gradients. Volatile nest locations confirmed by direct observation. Structural assessments of key buildings in the institutional district. Approach corridors to the hospital complex. The map exists in two copies: one in the Ghost Rider archive, one in the Canton Assembly's secured records.

The Grand Marshal came out of the Grey eleven days after entering it. Contemporary accounts describe a person who was entirely physically intact and entirely unwilling to discuss what they had experienced in any detail. The map was presented, the mission was considered closed, and the subject was not raised again by anyone in the rider's presence.

The map has not been acted on in the twelve years since. The salvage it would enable is not a secret. The cost of the operation it would require is also not a secret. The two facts sit across from each other in Canton Assembly sessions with the patient quality of a problem that has not yet found its moment.

8. #8The Fringe

Keys: what lies beyond, beyond, alps, outside, mountain, eastern europe, wilderness, border, forest, exile, no mans land, desolate, outliers, unknown, the outside, outcast, fringe, frontier, the fringe, edge

   [REGIONAL LORE - THE FRINGE]

   ---

OVERVIEW The Fringe is not a region in the way the Cantons or the Lakeshore are regions. It has no centre. No defining geography that separates it cleanly from what comes before it or what comes after. It is a gradient — the point where the Holdfast's loose sense of itself begins to thin and dissolve, where the last affiliated settlements give way to isolated outposts, and where isolated outposts give way to nothing that has a name.

Where the nothing starts is a question without a fixed answer. The Fringe boundary moves. It has always moved — inward when infected migration surges push communities back toward the Sprawl, outward in rare stable seasons when a particularly stubborn settlement manages to hold and push back. Ask ten different people where the Fringe begins and you get ten different answers, all of them correct for the moment they were last standing there.

What is consistent is what lies beyond it.

The Alps do not care about the Holdfast. They did not care about the world before the Holdfast and they will not care about whatever comes after. The eastern ranges — older, rougher, less traversed even in the pre-Fall world than the central alpine system the Spine occupies — extend outward from the Holdfast's edge in a continuous wall of rock and elevation that has no meaningful end visible from any point a living person has reliably reached and returned from. Beyond the first ridge lines: more ridge lines. Beyond those: the high passes of the eastern Alps giving way eventually to the desolated flatlands and forests of what was once Austria, then further east into the continental ruin that nobody in the Holdfast has mapped and nobody has tried to map in thirty years.

The forests are the other constant. Below the alpine tree line, stretching across the lower elevations in every direction the Fringe faces outward, the forests of central Europe have had forty years to reclaim the infrastructure that once divided them. Roads that were cleared to the horizon when the Fall happened are now corridors through dense canopy, the pavement beneath invisible under decades of leaf fall and root intrusion. Town signs still stand in places, their text faded to illegibility or in languages that fewer Holdfast residents read each year. The forests absorb them. The forests absorb everything, given enough time.

Nobody has gone into the deep Fringe and come back with news from the other side. A few have gone and not come back at all. What killed them — infected, exposure, starvation, something else — is not known because there was nobody to observe it and nobody to report it. The Fringe keeps its own records and does not share them.

   ---

   THE SETTLEMENTS

The inhabited Fringe exists in a band along the Sprawl-adjacent edge — a loose scatter of communities that are technically within Holdfast territory and practically operating as if the concept of Holdfast territory is someone else's concern. These settlements are small, rarely exceeding a few hundred residents, and built with the specific practicality of people who have decided to live in the most exposed position available and have organised their entire existence around that choice.

THE SPRAWL-FRINGE SETTLEMENTS The largest Fringe communities sit within a day's travel of the Sprawl's outermost farming collectives — close enough to trade, close enough to retreat if necessary, far enough that the Assembly's reach is theoretical rather than functional. There are perhaps eight to twelve of these settlements at any given time. The number shifts because Fringe settlements appear and disappear with a frequency that the rest of the Holdfast has learned to treat as normal. A community forms around a defensible structure — a pre-Fall farm complex, a partially intact industrial building, a road junction with good sightlines in multiple directions. It holds for a season, for several years, sometimes for a decade. Then something tips the balance — an infected surge, a bad winter, internal conflict, a bandit group that proves too persistent — and the settlement either relocates or disperses.

The ones that have survived longest are the ones that kept themselves small enough to be mobile. The Fringe's successful settlements share a common philosophy: nothing is permanent, everything worth keeping fits on a vehicle, and attachment to a specific location is a luxury the Fringe does not offer.

Architecture here is not the tiered construction of Chur or the water-adapted platforms of Haldensee. Fringe buildings are functional to the point of expressing a kind of aggressive practicality — ground floor only where possible, minimal windows, multiple exit points designed in from the beginning rather than added later. Structures that cannot be reinforced adequately are used for storage rather than habitation. People sleep in the most defensible room available, not the most comfortable one. Most long-term Fringe residents consider this an obvious statement and are mildly confused when it is remarked upon.

CROSSROADS HOLLOW The closest thing the Fringe has to a known, stable trading post — a settlement built around a road junction where three pre-Fall highways converge, approximately forty kilometres from the Sprawl's outermost settlements and about as deep into the Fringe as anything with a name tends to persist. Crossroads Hollow holds perhaps two hundred permanent residents and fluctuates significantly depending on the season, since it serves as the primary stopping point for traders moving between the Sprawl and the rare supply lines that attempt to push further out.

The settlement is built into and around a pre-Fall service station complex — the original fuel station long since dry, the attached commercial structures converted to accommodation and storage, a workshop that has been continuously operational for twenty years and handles vehicle repair, weapon maintenance, and the kind of general mechanical problem-solving that life at the edge of everything tends to generate constantly.

Crossroads Hollow has no formal governance, no charter, no Ghost Rider permanent post. A Vengeant Arbiter passes through every few months. The residents handle most disputes themselves by a process that involves community discussion and, occasionally, the involved parties being invited to take their disagreement outside the settlement boundary and resolve it without troubling anyone else. This system works with surprising consistency.

It is also the last reliable trading point for anyone going further out. People who arrive at Crossroads Hollow heading east or north are noted. People who come back are welcomed with the specific warmth reserved for things that were not expected to return. People who do not come back are noted in a different way and their absence becomes part of the local working knowledge about what lies in whatever direction they were heading.

THE OUTPOSTS Beyond the Sprawl-adjacent settlements, the inhabited Fringe thins to single structures — isolated homesteads, fortified farm buildings, the occasional pre-Fall structure that someone decided was worth defending alone or with a small group. These outposts are not affiliated with anything. They do not trade regularly. Some of them are not known to exist by anyone in the wider Holdfast until a traveller passes through and reports back.

The people who live in the outposts are a specific type. Not necessarily antisocial — many are simply private, people for whom the density of even Fringe settlements is too much friction. Some are exiles, from the Cantons or occasionally from the Ghost Riders, who needed distance between themselves and wherever their last chapter ended. Some are people who arrived in the Holdfast from the east, from beyond the Fringe, from somewhere they either cannot describe or choose not to, and who have stopped at the first place that seemed defensible and have not moved since.

These outpost residents know the immediate terrain around their location with an intimacy that borders on complete. They know the infected movement patterns, the Volatile range, the safe routes and the unsafe ones. They do not share this knowledge readily. It is their primary survival asset and the Fringe has taught them to hold their survival assets carefully.

   ---

   WHAT LIES BEYOND

East of the last outposts, north past the final ridge lines visible from the Spine's highest observation points — the world does not end. It just becomes unwitnessed.

The alpine passes that lead out of the Holdfast's eastern edge were mapped in the pre-Fall world in great detail. Those maps exist in the Canton archive, in various states of completeness. They show roads. Towns. Cities of varying size across the Austrian lowlands, the Swiss border cantons, the edges of what was once a broader European civilisation. The maps are forty years old. They are the most accurate representation available of a world that has had forty years to become something else entirely.

What that something else looks like is a subject of genuine, persistent uncertainty in the Holdfast. The reasonable assumptions are grim: infected density across the European continent at levels consistent with or exceeding what the Holdfast's worst areas produce, infrastructure in complete collapse, any surviving human population small and scattered and unreachable by any communication method available. These assumptions are probably correct. They are not confirmed.

There are stories. There are always stories. Travellers who arrived from the east in the early decades of the Holdfast — exhausted, damaged, sometimes barely coherent — brought fragments of account with them. A city holding in the Bavarian highlands. A coastal settlement somewhere on the Adriatic that had solved the water problem the way the Lakeshore did. A network of underground communities in what was once the Vienna basin living entirely below infected range. None of these accounts were ever verified. Most of the people who brought them did not survive long enough to be questioned thoroughly or were in no condition to be questioned when they arrived.

The Fringe absorbs these stories the way it absorbs everything — without judgment, without dismissal, with the flat attentiveness of people who know that the unexpected is more common out here than anywhere else and that ruling things out is a good way to be surprised badly.

THE FORESTS The forests between the Fringe settlements and the alpine approaches are not navigable in any conventional sense. Forty years of growth and zero maintenance have produced a landscape that bears minimal resemblance to the managed woodland that pre-Fall maps describe. The canopy is continuous for kilometres in most directions. Ground-level visibility drops to metres within minutes of leaving any cleared route. Pre-Fall road surfaces exist beneath the growth but are not reliably followable — they diverge, end without explanation, are blocked by fallen trees, collapse into erosion channels.

Infected are present in the forests. Their density is lower than in the urban ruins and lower than the open Sprawl, but the detection problem runs in both directions — the same visibility limitations that make navigation difficult make early warning almost impossible. Fringe residents who have moved through the deep forests describe the experience as requiring the complete suppression of every instinct that makes noise, since sound carries differently under canopy and the infected response to it is faster in enclosed terrain than in open ground.

Volatiles in the forests behave differently from urban or open-terrain Volatiles. The tree cover suits them in ways the other environments do not — they move through canopy with a facility that ground-level observation misses until it is too late, and the darkness under a full forest canopy at night is the kind of dark that even experienced runners describe with a specific kind of brevity that suggests they would rather not revisit the detail.

THE ALPINE APPROACHES The road passes into the eastern Alps are visible from Fringe high points on clear days. A few have been scouted to their lower approaches — the first kilometre, the first two, enough to establish that the passes are physically intact and not blocked by anything that a determined group could not move through. What lies beyond the first approaches is not confirmed by anyone alive.

The Ghost Riders have standing interest in the eastern passes. Both factions. The High Inquisitors maintain a file — two files, one per faction — on the question of what lies east, compiled from traveller accounts, Fringe outpost reports, and the few scouting attempts that produced any usable information before they stopped producing information of any kind. The files are thick and largely inconclusive. They are updated whenever something new arrives. New things arrive rarely.

The current Justicier Grand Marshal has reportedly read the eastern file three times in the last two years. Whether this represents operational planning or something more personal is not known outside a very small circle. In the Fringe it is the kind of thing people talk about in the specific tone used for things they find interesting and are not sure they want to see acted upon.

   DAILY LIFE

Living in the Fringe means living at the edge of what the Holdfast can promise you, which is not much to begin with. The settlements closest to the Sprawl have access to trade, to occasional Ghost Rider presence, to the thin comfort of knowing that there are other people within a day's travel. The further out you go the less of this is true and the more the daily equation simplifies down to its components: food, shelter, visibility, and not making noise you cannot account for.

The people of the Fringe are not romanticised by the rest of the Holdfast. They are not celebrated the way a Ghost Rider Vindicator is celebrated or respected the way a Spine Grand Marshal is respected. They are acknowledged — quietly, by people who think about the shape of the Holdfast and understand that the Fringe communities are the reason the Sprawl's eastern edge has not collapsed inward — and then mostly left to get on with it.

What they have that nowhere else quite replicates is space. And quiet, the dangerous kind. And the specific clarity that comes from living where every decision carries immediate consequence and the world does not cushion anything.

Fringe residents tend to be the best individual survivors in the Holdfast. Not the best organised, not the most equipped, not the most politically connected. Just the most personally capable of remaining alive in bad conditions for extended periods. This is selection pressure at work, and it has been working consistently for forty years.

Whether there is anything worth finding on the other side of those passes — whether the forests eventually open into something other than more forest, whether the eastern ruins hold anything beyond what the Grey represents at smaller scale — is the question the Fringe sits with. It does not answer it. It just keeps watching the tree line and noting what it sees and waiting, with the patience of people who have learned that the Fringe runs on its own schedule and not on anyone else's.

The passes are still there. The road surfaces exist under the growth. The alpine approaches are intact.

   Nobody has gone through yet.

   [NOTABLE CHARACTERS OF THE HOLDFAST]

   ---

MAREN SOLÍS Grand Marshal — Spirits of Justice Region: The Sprawl / All Regions Age: 54

The current Justicier Grand Marshal is not what people expect when they imagine the rank. She is not large. She is not loud. She has the specific stillness of someone who stopped needing to perform capability a very long time ago and has not found a reason to start again.

Maren came up through the Justicier ranks in the conventional way — Acolyte at seventeen, Officer at twenty-two after two failed attempts at the fourth exam that she has never explained and nobody has asked about twice. Arbiter for eleven years across the Sprawl and the Fringe. Vindicator work that included the resolution of what became known as the Crossroads Compact case — a coordinated extortion network operating across six Fringe settlements that had been running for four years before she dismantled it in eight weeks, alone, without a single execution. The case is studied by Acolytes. The methodology is considered either brilliant or impractical depending on who is teaching it.

She has thirty-one confirmed Volatile kills. The number is not something she discusses. People who ask directly are met with a silence that communicates everything necessary.

Her brands cover her completely from throat to wrist in the accumulated detail of three decades of rank advancement. The verse fragments on her arms, chosen by the previous Grand Marshal at her Anointing, are from the Book's section on patience as a form of justice. She has never said whether she thinks this was accurate. Her bike runs a blue flame that burns unusually steady even at low speeds, a mechanical quirk her faction's head mechanic has been trying to understand and replicate for years.

She has read the eastern file three times in the last two years. She has not explained why to anyone. She has started asking Highwalker contacts about pass conditions in the eastern alpine approaches in a way that sounds like professional curiosity and does not feel like it.

   ---

BASTIAN KREUTZ Highwalker — The Spine / The Grip Age: 67

The oldest active guide on the Spine and the person most responsible for the current standardised oxygen tank design, Bastian Kreutz is technically retired in the sense that he no longer takes paid crossings and practically retired in the sense that he has not gone a single week without climbing something since approximately 1987.

He was born in the Grip. His mother was one of the founding family's second generation. He has never spent more than three consecutive weeks below 1,800 metres and considers the valley settlements a mildly interesting foreign country that he is always pleased to leave. He has crossed the Spine's main traverse route more times than he has counted, guided perhaps four hundred people across it over a forty-year career, and lost eleven of them to conditions he could not control and one to conditions he has always believed he could have. He does not discuss that one.

The oxygen tank standardisation project — which transformed Spine respirator equipment from a local survival tool into the Holdfast's most valuable traded commodity — was his idea, proposed to the Grip's leadership in a meeting that he describes as the most arguing he has ever done while sitting down. It took three years to implement fully. He considers it his most significant contribution to the Holdfast and is slightly embarrassed when people agree.

He is one of perhaps five people alive who know the complete traverse route from western approach to eastern approach including all seasonal variations, the full network of emergency anchor points not marked on any shared documentation, and the location of two Deep Stations that are not acknowledged to exist by the Grip's official record. He has taught climbing to twelve people in his life. All twelve were known to him personally for at least two years before the first lesson. He has refused substantially more than twelve.

He has opinions about the eastern passes. He keeps them to himself. When Maren Solís's enquiries about eastern alpine approach conditions reached him through a trade contact he sat with the message for four days before responding. His response was thorough, detailed, and contained a question at the end that she has not yet answered.

DELIA VOSS Fisher — The Lakeshore / Haldensee Age: 38

There is a record kept informally at Haldensee — not official, not written anywhere, maintained in the collective memory of the settlement's older residents — of the largest single-day haul in Lakeshore history. Delia Voss set it nine years ago at age twenty-nine on a day she describes as unremarkable and everyone else describes differently. The haul fed Haldensee's main platform for eleven days and pushed that year's Quota into comfortable surplus before the end of summer. She has been family on the Lakeshore since before she stopped her boat.

She arrived originally from the Sprawl at twenty-three with two people she no longer mentions and a boat she had taken rather than been given, with a working knowledge of water that she had apparently developed entirely from first principles on inland rivers and reservoirs. The Lakeshore's initial assessment of her was cautious. Their assessment after the first week was revised. Their assessment after the first season was that the Sprawl's loss was the water's gain.

She runs a crew of four on the deep lake — the colder, harder southern water that most Haldensee boats avoid. She has a reading of the depth lines and temperature layers of the upper lake that her crew members describe as something between skill and something they do not have a technical word for. She does not sleep well. This is known because she is frequently found at the edge of the platform in the early morning hours before anyone else is awake, sitting in the specific stillness of someone whose thoughts are doing most of the work.

She has never spoken publicly about where she came from or who the two people she arrived with were. The Lakeshore does not require this. You catch a haul, you are family. Family does not demand your history. She is aware of this and grateful for it in the way that people are grateful for things that saved them.

She is also one of the most reliable sources of information in the Holdfast on the Sprawl-Lakeshore border situation, the bandit group activity out of the eastern Sprawl, and the general state of the road networks between regions — information she acquired before she reached the water and has updated through a network of contacts she maintains quietly and does not advertise.

TOMÁS VEIL Arbiter — Spirits of Vengeance Region: The Fringe / The Sprawl Age: 41

The most well-known Ghost Rider currently operating in the Fringe is not well-known for the reasons most Ghost Riders achieve recognition. He has not resolved a Great Grievance. He has not been involved in a case that entered the Book's illustrative examples. He has not done anything that the faction's formal record would flag as exceptional.

What he has done is stay. Eleven years as an Arbiter operating exclusively in the Fringe and the Sprawl's outermost edge, which by the actuarial reality of those regions represents a statistical anomaly significant enough that High Inquisitors mention it in passing when his name comes up. The Fringe does not produce eleven-year Arbiters. It produces casualties and transfers to safer territory. Tomás Veil appears to be immune to the hint.

He is Vengeant in a way that is neither the aggressive stereotype nor its opposite. He is quiet, thorough, and operating with a personal code that sits within the Book's framework but has been shaped by eleven years of applying it in places where the grey areas are wider and the support structure is thinner than anywhere else in the Holdfast. His judgments in the Fringe settlements are considered fair even by people who did not benefit from them, which in Vengeant terms is an unusual distinction.

His brands are fully complete to Arbiter rank — the devil horn motif running from chest to wrist, three verse fragments in his skin, the geometric border work of the Arbiter additions visible at his collar and cuffs. His Colt has a crack in the grip wood that he has repaired three times and allowed to crack again because the repair and the crack together have become the shape his hand expects.

He knows the Fringe's terrain — the settlements, the outpost locations, the forest approaches, the pre-Fall road surfaces under the growth — better than anyone outside of the outpost residents themselves. He has been to Crossroads Hollow enough times that the settlement considers him practically a resident. He has been further east than any Ghost Rider on record who returned from it, though the distance involved is something he is precise and limited about when discussing.

He has a specific and unresolved interest in what killed the three teams that went into the deep Fringe in the last decade and did not come back. Not the infected. He is confident it was not the infected, based on the approach conditions at the time. He has not shared this conclusion with his High Inquisitor. He is still working out what it means before he does.

10. #10Infected Types

Keys: virus stages, infected types, hva, stages of infection, spitter, freaks, undead, volatile, freak types, runner, zombie, mutation, bolter, infected, types, demolisher, goon, screamer, bloater, biter, what are they

[FIELD LORE - INFECTED CLASSIFICATION] Compiled from Ghost Rider documentation, Canton medical records, and Spine observational accounts. Updated by Justicier High Inquisitor field reports. Treat all classifications as working definitions — the HVA does not hold still and neither does what it makes.

    ---

CLASSIFICATION OVERVIEW The Harran Viral Agent does not produce a single type of infected. It never did. Even in the first weeks of the outbreak, field accounts described variation — some infected fast, some slow, some behaving in ways that early observers could not categorise. Forty years of viral mutation, environmental pressure, and regional variation have expanded that initial variation into a taxonomy that Ghost Rider Acolytes study in their first month and experienced runners are still surprised by in their twentieth year.

The classifications below represent the most consistently documented infected types across the Holdfast. They are named by the people who encounter them, not by any scientific body — the last person in the Holdfast with formal virological training died twelve years ago and left no successor. The names are functional. They describe what you see and what it does. That is enough.

All infected are referred to colloquially as Freaks. Within that, type names are used in operational context. A runner who cannot tell a Bolter from a Viral on approach is a runner who is going to make a serious mistake.

    ---

    STAGE ONE: FRESH TURN

VIRALS What newly turned infected look like before the virus fully rewrites their biology. The window varies — somewhere between six hours and three days post-turn, depending on the individual and the specific HVA strain involved. Virals are the most immediately dangerous infected in the Holdfast on a one-to-one basis because they retain most of the physical capacity of the living person they were. They run. Full sprint, coordinated movement, capable of climbing obstacles, opening simple doors, using leverage. They do not retain memory or cognition but they retain muscle memory in ways that manifest unpredictably.

They are also loud. The Viral stage is characterised by a specific vocalisation — a raw, continuous sound that experienced runners describe as somewhere between screaming and something without a human category. It carries a significant distance. It draws other infected. A single Viral in an enclosed space in a dense infected area is a cascade problem within minutes.

Virals deteriorate into Biters within days under normal conditions. In cold environments — upper Fringe, Spine approaches — the deterioration slows significantly. A Viral preserved in consistent cold has been documented maintaining its sprint capability for up to three weeks. This is one of several reasons the Spine's lower approaches require more caution than their infected density alone would suggest.

Identification: Fast, upright gait, full sprint capability, constant vocalisation, fresher appearance than other infected types. Often still partially clothed in recognisable pre-Fall garments.

    ---

    STAGE TWO: STANDARD INFECTED

BITERS The baseline. The overwhelming majority of what the Holdfast's infected population consists of — slow, shambling, attracted by noise and movement, individually manageable and collectively lethal through numbers alone. Biters are what Virals become and what most infected remain for the duration of their functional existence.

Forty years of decay has produced Biters in various states of physical deterioration. Fresh Biters — turned within the last year or two — retain relatively coherent physical form and move with more coordination than older specimens. Decade-old Biters are visibly desiccated, movement slow and degraded, but structurally capable of continuing indefinitely in the right conditions. The oldest documented Biters in the Grey are estimated at close to the full forty years of the outbreak — desiccated to the point of appearing almost mummified, moving at a speed that a walking person can maintain distance from comfortably, but still functional, still reactive to stimulus, still dangerous in the specific way that something without a threshold for pain or exhaustion is always dangerous.

In cold environments Biters freeze immobile during the hardest winter months and thaw functional in spring. They do not appear to sustain damage from the freeze-thaw cycle beyond what time is already doing to them. This seasonal pattern is the primary reason winter in the Spine and upper Fringe is considered the safest period in those regions and is used accordingly for supply movement and construction work.

Identification: Slow shambling gait, degraded physical appearance relative to age, attracted by noise and movement, congregate in groups of variable size. Vocalisation is low, continuous, and carries further than its volume suggests.

BOLTERS The outlier in standard infected behaviour. Bolters do not attack. This makes them sound harmless. They are not harmless.

Named for their primary behaviour — flight rather than aggression when stimulated — Bolters are infected who appear to have developed a hyper-sensitised threat response during the turn process. They flee from noise, light, sudden movement, and the proximity of anything living. They flee fast, and they flee loudly, and they flee directly through whatever other infected are between them and distance.

The danger of a Bolter is entirely contextual. Encountering a single Bolter in open ground is a minor inconvenience — it will run, make noise, and be gone. Encountering a Bolter in a dense infected environment is a cascade trigger equivalent to a Viral. A Bolter spooked at the wrong moment in the wrong location has killed more experienced runners than most active threats in the Holdfast's documented record, simply by detonating the infected environment around a position through sheer panicked flight.

Bolters are also, notably, the only infected type that can be reliably observed without immediately triggering a threat response. Runners who know what they are looking at can sometimes use a Bolter's flight behaviour as an early warning system — if the Bolters in an area are moving, something has disturbed them, and that something may not be you.

Identification: Faster than Biter, does not orient toward living targets, panicked movement pattern, vocalises on stimulus rather than continuously. Often found at the edges of infected congregations rather than the centre.

    ---

    STAGE THREE: MUTATED VARIANTS

These classifications represent infected whose HVA progression has deviated from the standard Biter pathway into something the virus has produced in response to — as best the Holdfast's limited medical understanding can determine — specific environmental or biological conditions during the turn process. They are less common than Biters. They are significantly more dangerous.

GOONS Large. That is the first and most operationally relevant thing about a Goon. The HVA in certain individuals produces extreme physical hypertrophy during the turn process — muscle and bone mass increasing substantially, the infected emerging from the turn stage significantly larger and more physically powerful than the person they were. The mechanism is not understood. The result is.

A Goon stands between two and two and a half metres in most documented cases. Its movement is slower than a Biter at baseline but covers more ground per stride, and when it accelerates — a charge, triggered by close proximity or direct stimulus — the speed relative to its mass is genuinely shocking the first time a runner experiences it. Impact from a charging Goon is not a survivable event without structural cover or significant prior distance.

Goons are not intelligent. They do not coordinate. They do not use tools or leverage. What they do is absorb damage that would stop anything else and keep closing distance. Standard small arms fire creates pain response and sometimes alters Goon behaviour without ending the threat. Centre mass shooting is inefficient. Ghost Riders operating in Goon-dense areas adapt accordingly.

Goons congregate around other infected rather than dispersing. Finding one Goon in a location suggests more infected in the vicinity, generally. Finding three Goons in proximity is a situation that experienced runners disengage from without exception.

Identification: Significantly larger than standard infected, hunched posture, visible mass difference, slower baseline movement with high acceleration potential. Vocalisation is lower-frequency than Biters, felt as much as heard at close range.

SPITTERS The range variant. Spitters are infected whose HVA mutation has produced a biological change in the upper respiratory and digestive tract that results in the accumulation and expulsion of a caustic fluid — the specific composition is undocumented but the effect on exposed skin and eyes has been extensively observed, which is to say it is severe and fast-acting.

A Spitter does not close distance to attack. It positions itself at range — typically elevated when elevation is available, which it seeks instinctively — and expels the fluid in a directed burst that has an effective range of approximately six to eight metres under good conditions. The fluid does not dissolve material but produces immediate intense chemical burns on contact with skin, and contact with the eyes produces temporary to permanent vision impairment depending on exposure duration.

The operational problem with Spitters is the combination of range and noise. A Spitter vocalises before expelling — a specific rising sound that experienced runners learn to respond to immediately and that inexperienced runners learn to respond to the first time they do not. In an enclosed space, a single Spitter can deny movement corridors effectively. Multiple Spitters covering overlapping fields represent a genuine tactical problem that requires either elimination or significant route modification.

Spitter fluid retains its caustic properties on surfaces for approximately forty minutes before degrading. Areas where Spitters have been active are identifiable by discolouration on floors and walls. Runners who know the sign avoid crossing these areas regardless of how long ago the Spitter that made them was dealt with.

Identification: Elevated positioning preference, visible swelling in throat and upper chest area, distinctive pre-expulsion vocalisation, caustic fluid staining on nearby surfaces.

BOMBERS The result of HVA mutation producing abnormal gas accumulation in the infected's body cavity over an extended period. Bombers are visibly distended — torso and abdomen significantly enlarged by internal gas buildup, movement slow and deliberate in a way that reads as almost careful. They are, in their own biological logic, correct to move carefully. The buildup is unstable.

A Bomber that is killed by direct trauma to the torso — gunshot, blade impact, blunt force — detonates. The explosion radius is approximately four to five metres of forceful shrapnel and the same caustic fluid composition found in Spitter expulsions. The kill method for a Bomber is headshot, distance, fire, or a combination of the first two. Runners who have been in proximity to a Bomber detonation and survived do not need to be told twice.

The other trigger for Bomber detonation is environmental pressure — Bombers have been documented detonating spontaneously in high-temperature environments, in response to certain frequencies of sustained sound, and for no apparent external reason after an extended period of buildup. This last category is the one that makes experienced runners uncomfortable about sharing enclosed spaces with Bombers regardless of apparent stability.

In the Grey, Bomber density in the industrial zone is elevated, believed to be connected to chemical exposure during the turn process in the industrial environment. Runners operating in those areas are briefed specifically.

Identification: Visibly distended torso, slow and deliberate movement, distinctive low bubbling vocalisation, avoid all direct torso contact.

SCREAMERS Rare. Consistently the infected type that produces the most documented secondary casualties through indirect effect rather than direct attack.

Screamers are infected whose HVA mutation has affected the vocal apparatus to an extreme degree. The vocalisation they produce is not a scream in any conventional sense — it is a sustained sound at a frequency and volume that produces immediate physiological response in living humans: disorientation, loss of balance, temporary hearing damage at close range, and in cases of sustained exposure, structural damage to the inner ear that is not reversible with the medical resources available in the Holdfast.

A Screamer does not chase. It stands and produces sound. The sound draws every other infected in range toward it — not toward the Screamer, toward the stimulus that triggered the Screamer, which is the living thing that is now standing in the middle of an increasingly large and converging infected mass while experiencing progressive vestibular disruption.

Screamers are priority elimination targets. Everything else stops when a Screamer activates. Ghost Rider protocols for Screamer encounters are among the most specific in the operational handbook — distance, angle, elimination method, the specific post-elimination window before the drawn infected mass arrives.

Encountering a Screamer indoors is a situation that the operational handbook addresses with unusual directness and that experienced Ghost Riders address with the specific economy of movement of people who have already worked out everything unnecessary.

Identification: Upright stationary posture, visible physical distension in throat, activates on close proximity rather than sound stimulus, produces sustained high-frequency vocalisation rather than standard infected sounds.

    ---

    STAGE FOUR: APEX INFECTED

VOLATILES Everything else in this document is context for understanding why Volatiles are what they are.

The Volatile is the HVA's apex expression — a full biological restructuring of the infected into something that the original virus did not produce and that has emerged over forty years of mutation into a distinct variant. The comparison to the original Harran accounts is instructive: early Volatile documentation describes a fast, aggressive, night-active infected that was dangerous primarily through speed and aggression. Current Holdfast Volatiles are that, plus four decades of adaptation and selection pressure that has kept only the capable ones alive.

They own the night. This is not metaphor and not tradition. It is operational reality based on forty years of consistent documentation. Volatiles are photosensitive — UV exposure causes rapid tissue damage and they will not willingly remain in direct sunlight. Dawn kills stragglers that have not found cover. Dusk releases them. The two hours around sunrise and sunset are the transition windows where both states overlap and neither is fully reliable.

At night, a Volatile is faster than any living person. More agile than anything of its size has reason to be. It moves through vertical space — walls, structural facades, the exterior of buildings — with a facility that still produces involuntary physical response in people who have seen it for the first time, even people who were told in detail what to expect. The descriptions do not prepare you. The documentation does not prepare you. The first time you see a Volatile cross a building exterior at full speed in total darkness you learn something about yourself that you did not know before.

Volatiles hunt with intent. Not coordinated strategy — they do not communicate, do not plan, do not set traps consciously. But they orient toward prey with persistence and spatial awareness that Biters and even Goons do not have. They remember, in whatever functional sense remains available to them, where prey went when it went out of immediate sensory range. They circle. They cut angles. They make the specific decisions that a pursuing predator makes and they make them faster than most living people can process and respond to.

They also make sound that is unlike anything else in the infected taxonomy. The Volatile's primary vocalisation is a screech — a short, sharp sound used during active pursuit, audible over significant distances and directional enough that experienced runners can track multiple Volatiles by sound alone in darkness. Before the screech comes the click — a rapid echolocation-adjacent sound made during hunting that is much quieter, much closer, and the last warning you get before active pursuit begins. Runners who survive extended Volatile encounters learn the click. Runners who learn the click tend to survive further encounters.

Day Volatiles do exist. Infected who have completed the Volatile mutation but survived into daytime hours through sheltering in lightless environments — building interiors, underground spaces, the deep interior of large structures. Day Volatiles are not weakened by the absence of night, only by direct UV exposure. Encountering one indoors during daylight hours removes the only consistent environmental advantage available against them.

Ghost Rider rank advancement requires confirmed Volatile kills: one per rank from Officer through High Inquisitor, accumulating to a minimum of twenty by Grand Marshal. The kill requirement exists not because Volatile kills are the only measure of a Ghost Rider's capability but because the ability to consistently survive the attempt — alone, in field conditions, with the equipment available — is as precise a measurement of operational competence as the Ghost Riders have found in fifty years of looking.

Identification: Never in direct sunlight willingly, significantly faster and more agile than all other infected types, click vocalisation preceding hunt behaviour, screech during active pursuit, visible physical restructuring from standard infected morphology — elongated limbs, altered facial structure, visible bioluminescent quality in the eyes in complete darkness.

Night rule: If you are outside after dark without walls between yourself and open ground, assume Volatile presence until the sun confirms otherwise. This is not paranoia. This is the Holdfast's oldest surviving operational guidance and it has never been wrong.

11. #11Weapons and Equipment

Keys: weapons, salvaged, melee, armament, protection, loadout, armor, blades, what do people carry, holdfast weapons, equipment, regional gear, crafted, tools, firearms, kit, arms, guns, gear

    ---

    UNIVERSAL CARRY

These are the items found across all six regions in various states of quality and maintenance. Not everyone has all of them. Everyone has thought about all of them.

BLADES The most democratic weapon in the Holdfast. A blade requires no ammunition, no maintenance beyond edge care, no manufacturing infrastructure beyond a forge and someone who knows how to use it. Every inhabited region produces blades of some kind and every adult in the Holdfast carries one as a minimum.

The standard Holdfast blade is a fixed single-edge tool in the twenty to thirty centimetre range — long enough to be useful in close contact, short enough to be practical in confined spaces. Manufacturing quality varies enormously by region. Ilanz forge blades are the benchmark — consistent steel, reliable temper, a grind geometry refined over thirty years of feedback from people using them in real conditions. A confirmed Ilanz blade in good condition is a trade commodity in its own right across all regions.

Improvised blades — repurposed metal stock, ground-down tool steel, salvaged industrial cutting edges rehandled — are common everywhere outside the Cantons. They work. They work less consistently and less durably than purpose-made blades, and the difference between the two is a conversation most people have had at a moment they would rather not have had it.

Larger blades exist — machetes, short swords in the loosest sense of the term, agricultural tools repurposed for violence. These occupy the space between blade and improvised melee weapon. They are common in the Sprawl and the Fringe where cleared vegetation and open engagement distances make the extra reach relevant.

CLUBS AND IMPACT WEAPONS Second only to blades in universal distribution. Anything dense and handleable has been used as an impact weapon in the Holdfast at some point and most of them are still in rotation. The refined end of this category — purpose-built clubs, reinforced bats, weighted pipe sections with proper grip treatment — is manufactured in small batches by workshops in every major settlement.

The functional value of impact weapons against infected is high relative to their production cost. A blade requires edge maintenance and risks binding in bone. A solid impact weapon does not. Against Biters specifically, a well-weighted club applied to the cranial structure ends the encounter efficiently and quietly. Quietly is the operational word. Noise management is survival management in the Holdfast and blunt trauma is quieter than firearms by an order of magnitude relevant to anyone who has ever seen what a single gunshot does to an infected group in an enclosed area.

CROSSBOWS The Holdfast's primary ranged weapon below the firearm tier. Not because crossbows are preferred over firearms — they are not, by anyone — but because bolts can be manufactured anywhere with basic materials, recovered and reused from most targets, and the crossbow mechanism itself requires no propellant chemistry to maintain. Forty years after the Fall the firearms supply is a fixed and diminishing resource. The crossbow supply is as large as the willingness to make bolts.

Canton workshops produce the most technically refined crossbows in the Holdfast — laminated limbs, precision track systems, a repeating mechanism developed about fifteen years ago that allows three-bolt sequences before reloading. The repeating design is Canton-exclusive in manufacture though widely copied with varying success across other regions.

Accuracy at range is the crossbow's limitation. Against Biters at twenty metres it is entirely adequate. Against Volatiles at any range requiring precision under pressure it is a tool of last resort rather than primary engagement. Most experienced runners carry both a crossbow and a firearm and have a clear operational distinction in their own heads about when each is the right answer.

FIREARMS — SALVAGED The pre-Fall firearm stock of central Europe was substantial. Switzerland, Austria, and the surrounding nations maintained significant civilian and military arms inventories that have been feeding the Holdfast's firearm supply for forty years without being exhausted — though the rate of attrition consistently outpaces the rate of salvage recovery and the gap widens every year.

Common salvaged firearms in Holdfast circulation include bolt-action hunting rifles in various calibres, semi-automatic pistols from several generations of pre-Fall civilian and law enforcement production, and pump-action shotguns in sufficient numbers that functioning examples are found in most settlements of any size. Fully automatic military-specification weapons exist but are significantly rarer, held by Ghost Riders, Canton Wardens, and the better- armed Fringe operators.

Ammunition is the constraint on all of it. Reloading equipment — presses, dies, primer manufacturing capability — exists in the Cantons and in Ghost Rider faction workshops, allowing spent casings to be recycled into functional rounds of variable but usable quality. This reloading capacity is the single most important reason Holdfast firearm use has not collapsed entirely. The rounds it produces are considered second quality compared to pre-Fall sealed stock — which still surfaces occasionally in salvage and commands significant trade premium — but second quality rounds fired from a functional weapon remain substantially preferable to an empty chamber.

    ---

    REGION SPECIFIC

    THE CANTONS — WARDEN ISSUE

WARDEN PATTERN CARBINE Produced at Ilanz over the last twenty years, the Warden Pattern Carbine is the closest thing the Holdfast has to a standardised military firearm. A semi-automatic weapon in a common salvage calibre, built on a design derived from pre-Fall commercial hunting rifles with a shortened barrel, folding stock, and a mounting rail system for optics. Not elegant. Entirely functional.

Approximately three hundred are in active circulation among Canton Wardens. They are not traded outside Canton territory officially. Unofficially, four confirmed examples have been documented in Ghost Rider possession and at least two in Fringe operator hands. The Canton Assembly is aware of this and has chosen not to pursue the accounting.

WARDEN SHIELD Large rectangular body shields constructed from layered salvaged material — outer face of recovered vehicle door steel, backing of dense polymer sheeting, edge-bound in leather. Heavy, deliberately so. Designed for use in breach response — holding a gap, covering a withdrawal, pushing through a Biter cluster in a corridor where firearms would be acoustically catastrophic.

Two-person shield teams are standard Warden breach response doctrine. One shield carrier, one behind with a blade or short firearm. The technique has been refined over twenty years of gap defence and is considered one of the reasons Chur's breach casualty rate is the lowest in the Holdfast.

CANTON SIGNAL EQUIPMENT Not a weapon but treated as equipment of equivalent importance. The Canton signal system — bell towers, mirror relay stations on the ridge lines, a network of runner posts between settlements — is the Cantonal infrastructure that enables coordinated response. Warden units carry personal signal equipment: compact mirror signal sets, standardised flag codes, a compressed- air horn used exclusively for mass alert that every Canton resident knows to respond to without hesitation.

    THE SPINE — HIGHWALKER CARRY

HIGHWALKER BOLT PISTOL A compact crossbow design unique to the Spine — single-handed, short limb, effective range of approximately fifteen metres — developed for use in climbing situations where a full-size crossbow is not manageable. Small enough to be held in one hand while the other maintains a grip or anchor point. The bolt capacity is three, loaded vertically into a compact magazine above the trigger.

It is not a combat weapon in the conventional sense. It is a tool for situations specific to the Spine: an infected encountered on a face with no retreat option, a threat appearing during a crossing, the specific nightmare of a Viral reaching a station during a crossing with no disengagement possible. In those situations, fifteen metres of range and three bolts is what exists and Highwalkers are trained accordingly.

ICE TOOLS Dual-purpose. Climbing tools first, weapons second, but second by a margin close enough that the distinction blurs on the Spine with some regularity. The pick end of a technical ice axe at close range is as effective as any purpose-built weapon and every Highwalker carries two as standard equipment. The specific geometry of the Grip's manufactured ice tools has been refined over thirty years to be marginally more useful in the secondary application without compromising the primary one.

SPINE RESPIRATOR SYSTEM Detailed in the Spine regional entry. Operationally: not a weapon, treated as primary survival equipment equivalent to a sidearm. A Spine operator without functional respiratory equipment above 2,000 metres is a liability to everyone around them within approximately two hours. Full kit includes mask unit, minimum two filled tanks, replacement filter cartridges, and a field repair kit for the mask seal.

    THE LAKESHORE — WATER CARRY

LAKESHORE HARPOON The Lakeshore's signature and most recognisable weapon. Originally a fishing tool — a short-range spear launcher, hand-pumped pneumatic or heavy spring- loaded, designed for fish at close range from a boat — adapted incrementally over decades into a viable combat tool against infected at the waterline.

The current Lakeshore harpoon design fires a bolt approximately sixty centimetres long at effective range of twelve to eighteen metres, sufficient for waterline defence from a boat or dock platform. The bolt is barbed and tethered, which in fishing application allows retrieval and in defensive application allows a struck infected to be dragged clear of a dock rather than left in contact with the structure. This detail — the tether — is considered the single most important adaptation from fishing to defence tool, proposed originally by a Haldensee dock operator whose name the settlement still knows.

Harpoon maintenance is considered as important as boat maintenance on the Lakeshore. A platform without a functioning harpoon on the dock-facing side is considered inadequately equipped. No one says this to the people on that platform. Everyone knows.

LAKE BLADES Long, thin, single-edge blades produced from salvaged boat building steel, designed for use from a low and unstable position — a rocking boat, a wet dock surface, a platform edge. The geometry prioritises reach and thrust over chopping force because chopping from a low unstable position in wet conditions produces falls more reliably than it produces dead infected. The design philosophy is entirely pragmatic and the result looks unlike any blade produced in the Cantons or the Sprawl.

    ---

THE SPRAWL — GENERAL POPULATION AND GHOST RIDERS

SPRAWL SCATTER GUNS The most widely distributed weapon type in the Sprawl by some margin. Pump action and semi-automatic shotguns in various pre-Fall configurations, maintained to varying standards, loaded with locally reloaded ammunition of variable quality. The scatter gun is the Sprawl's answer to the specific tactical reality of open ground with unpredictable Biter cluster sizes and occasional bandit contact — at close range, shot spread compensates for the accuracy degradation that stress and variable light conditions produce.

Every Sprawl settlement of any size has at least one person whose primary role is firearms maintenance. The quality of that maintenance is the difference between a community that functions and one that discovers the hard way that a firearm that has not been cleaned in eight months is not a firearm at the moment it is needed.

GHOST RIDER — THE COLT Detailed in the Ghost Rider faction entry. The Colt is the Officer-and-above sidearm of both factions, manufactured in-house, individually fitted, engraved as standard. A long-barrelled revolver in a calibre unique to Ghost Rider production — meaning ammunition is not compatible with any other weapon in the Holdfast, which is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight. Ghost Rider ammunition cannot be sourced anywhere except Ghost Rider supply, which makes the Colt impossible to meaningfully arm without faction backing.

The Colt is a six-round weapon in a world where reload speed is often not the relevant factor — what matters is that each round goes where it needs to go, and forty years of Ghost Rider marksmanship training has built a culture around this expectation. Ghost Riders are notable across all regions for a specific quality of accuracy under pressure that observers attribute to training and insiders attribute to not wanting to waste a round.

GHOST RIDER — SADDLE LOADOUT Beyond the Colt, the standard Ghost Rider officer loadout includes a pump or semi-automatic shotgun in the forward saddle scabbard and a semi-automatic or select-fire rifle across the back. The rifle is the most variable element of the loadout — sourced from salvage, maintained individually, calibre varying by what a specific rider has been able to source and maintain over their career.

Higher ranked Ghost Riders often carry more specialised configurations. Vindicators and above tend toward precision rifles for the specific reality of Volatile hunting — a weapon capable of accurate fire at one hundred metres or beyond, since the operational doctrine for Volatile engagement strongly prefers to close the distance as a last resort rather than a first.

    ---

THE FRINGE — IMPROVISED AND SURVIVOR CARRY

FRINGE COMPOSITE BOWS The Fringe's primary ranged weapon below the firearm tier. Unlike the Canton crossbow — a manufactured tool produced with workshop precision — Fringe composite bows are individually made from available materials: salvaged fibreglass, laminated wood, recovered polymer sheet, whatever produces the required draw weight from whatever is accessible in the specific location where the bow was made. The result is enormous variation in quality, draw weight, and effective range.

The best Fringe bows are genuinely impressive — handmade tools refined over years by operators who depend on them and have strong incentive to get them right. The worst Fringe bows are dangerous primarily to the person shooting them. The difference is visible to experienced eyes and invisible to inexperienced ones, which is part of why Fringe equipment assessment is a skill in its own right.

ARMOUR — FRINGE PATCHWORK The Fringe's approach to protective equipment reflects its approach to everything: use what is available, make it work, accept that perfect does not exist here. Fringe operators wear layered protection assembled from whatever has been available and survivable long enough to be incorporated — motorcycle leathers from pre-Fall salvage, reinforced with salvaged sports padding, chain link sections across bite-exposure areas, dense canvas layering in lieu of anything better.

The bite-protection philosophy differs significantly from the Cantons, where Warden-issue equipment is manufactured with specific bite-resistance testing. Fringe patchwork armour is tested the same way everything in the Fringe is tested: by the person wearing it, in the field, with the results either confirming the design or informing the next revision for someone else.

    UNIVERSAL SURVIVAL EQUIPMENT

Beyond weapons, the operational survival kit consistent across experienced runners in all regions:

LIGHT MANAGEMENT Fire is the oldest tool in the Holdfast and the most dangerous to use operationally. Infected are attracted to light at night as reliably as they are attracted to noise. Experienced runners use chemlight equivalents — salvaged or locally produced phosphorescent sticks — for minimum- signature navigation, reserving open flame for sealed environments where exterior visibility is controlled.

UV SOURCES The most valuable anti-Volatile tool available below Grand Marshal rank. Salvaged UV emitters — torches, portable lamps, any device producing ultraviolet output — cause Volatile tissue damage on contact and are the primary field deterrent for night operations. UV sources are the most consistently traded piece of specialist equipment in the Holdfast, sourced from pre-Fall medical and industrial salvage, maintained with the care of irreplaceable equipment because they are irreplaceable equipment.

A functioning UV torch in good condition is worth more in the Grey's approach zones than most firearms. This is not speculation. It is the consistent trade reality at every checkpoint and supply point adjacent to dense Volatile territory.

MEDICAL CARRY Standardised across Ghost Rider operations, approximated by experienced civilians: wound closure materials, broad-spectrum antiseptic, field tourniquet, bone setting splint materials for the realistic injury profile of someone spending their life in the field, and wherever possible a dose of whatever the current best available broad-spectrum antibiotic the Holdfast produces. The medical entry for the latter is that Ilanz produces a penicillin-derivative compound of variable but workable potency from a cultivation process that has been running for twenty years. It is not what pre-Fall medicine was. It is what exists and it saves lives at a rate that makes the effort of producing it unambiguously worthwhile.

ROPE Thirty metres minimum. The Holdfast universal. Useful in more situations than any weapon, lighter than most, and the item most consistently reported missing from the kits of people who needed it.

[FACTION LORE - THE HIGH INFECTED]

    ---

OVERVIEW They do not have a name for themselves that they share with outsiders. Among their own they use a word in the old dialect of the Grip's founding families that translates roughly as the Remained — those who stayed themselves when everything said they should not have. The Holdfast calls them the High Infected. It is not a kind name. It is not meant to be. Most of the people using it have never met one and are working from second-hand accounts and instinct, both of which have been reliably wrong about this particular group since the beginning.

There are approximately one thousand of them. They live deep in the mountain terrain of the Spine's interior reaches, further in and higher up than the Highwalkers maintain permanent stations, in the cold geography where the permanent snowline begins and the rest of the Holdfast's concerns become very small and very distant. They have been there for nearly two decades. They built what they have from nothing, with no assistance from any region and considerable active hostility from several, and what they have built works. This is a fact the Holdfast has found persistently inconvenient to acknowledge.

    ---

    ORIGIN

The Highland Mushroom grows in specific conditions on the Spine's upper reaches — certain elevations, certain rock compositions, certain moisture and cold combinations that the Highwalkers have known about for years and regarded as a curiosity rather than a resource. It has a distinctive appearance: pale cap, near-white stem, a faint bioluminescent quality in low light that makes it visible to anyone navigating the high terrain at dusk. It is not edible in any conventional sense. It is intensely bitter, produces significant nausea in uninfected individuals, and was not considered useful for anything until approximately twenty years ago.

The bitten had always been cast out. This is the oldest and most consistent policy across every inhabited region of the Holdfast — not cruel in intent, simply mathematical. An infected bite produces a Viral within days at the outside. A community that keeps bitten members is a community that produces infected from the inside, which is the specific kind of catastrophe from which settlements do not recover. The cast-out policy is not questioned. It has saved more lives than it has ended. This does not make it comfortable to think about too carefully.

The first group of cast-outs who found the mushroom did so by accident — the specific accident of desperate people in a high mountain environment eating things they would not have considered in any other circumstance. What they found was not a cure. The virus did not leave them. What the mushroom's compound did was interrupt the progression — stall the neural deterioration that produces the Viral state, preserve cognitive function past the point where it should have been gone, and leave the infected in something that was neither the person they had been nor the Freak they should have become.

They were changed. They were aware of being changed. They were aware of each other in ways they had not been before. And they were, still, themselves — frightened, cold, expelled from the only communities they had known, somewhere in the high mountains with a handful of pale mushrooms and the slowly dawning understanding that they had become something the Holdfast did not have a category for.

They found more mushrooms. They found each other. They stayed in the mountains where nobody came looking, and they began, carefully and without any outside assistance, to figure out what they were.

    ---

    THE COMPOUND

The mushroom in its raw form is not sufficient for long-term maintenance. Early members of the group experienced the compound's effects degrading within days, the viral progression resuming, the cognitive deterioration beginning again, and then — if they consumed more mushroom — reversing. The cycle was unstable and the raw form was not always accessible in sufficient quantity.

Over years of collective effort — some members had medical or botanical knowledge from their pre-cast-out lives, and that knowledge has been passed down and expanded through two generations of practice — the group developed a refined compound process. The mushroom is cultivated now in specific cave systems in the deep Spine where the conditions are maintained artificially. The cultivation operation is the most protected resource the High Infected have, more guarded than anything else they possess, because without it the entire population begins to deteriorate within a week.

The compound is taken daily by every member. Missing a dose produces noticeable effects within hours — heightened aggression, sensory overstimulation, the beginning of the cognitive unwinding that the mushroom prevents. Missing two consecutive doses produces effects that are not always reversible with resumed dosing. The compound is not a cure. It is a permanent maintenance requirement, and every High Infected alive understands this with the clarity of people whose survival depends on never forgetting it.

What the compound also does — and this took years to understand — is interact with the viral biology in ways that produce the gifts. The HVA's biological restructuring, held in suspension by the compound rather than allowed to progress to full Viral state, produces enhancements rather than deterioration. The specific enhancement depends on factors that are not fully understood even by the High Infected's most knowledgeable members — individual biology, length of infection before first compound dose, dosing regularity over time, and something that resists systematic explanation and has been tentatively attributed to the viral load's interaction with specific neurological structures.

    ---

    APPEARANCE

At rest, in ordinary light, with their eyes down, a High Infected can pass for an uninfected human at distance. Closer inspection reveals what cannot be fully concealed: the pale cast to the skin, noticeably lighter than whatever the person's original complexion was, as if something has gradually drained the warmth from it. The black vein patterning — the viral vasculature made visible beneath the skin — runs across the neck, up behind the ears, tracing the jaw and in some members extending to the cheekbones and brow. It is not identical across all members. Some show more than others. It is always present.

Their hands show the vein patterning most visibly, and the nails carry a particular density that can be extended, under will or strong emotion, into the claw configuration that every High Infected can produce. The claws are not large. They are sharp in the specific way of something biological rather than manufactured — a density and edge that standard tissue does not produce. They retract fully. Most High Infected keep them retracted in all circumstances except necessity or direct threat.

Their eyes, in ordinary conditions and among neutral company, are typically kept dim — the glow present but suppressed to a low ring around the iris, often mistakable in poor light for a trick of reflection. When they choose to let the glow surface fully — in identification, in warning, in the specific social signalling of their own community — the colour is unmistakable and consistent with their tier.

They dress as people dress. They have learned, over two decades of mountain habitation, to maintain themselves with the particular care of a group that knows how quickly appearances produce conclusions. They are clean. Their clothing is repaired and functional. They smell of cold air and the faint mineral quality of the deep mountain, not of what the Holdfast's general population expects when it hears the word infected. First-time encounters with High Infected consistently produce a version of the same experience: the intellectual knowledge of what they are failing to override the physical experience of meeting a person.

    ---

    THE THREE TIERS

OMEGA — Blue Eyes The most numerous tier at approximately six hundred members and the most recently infected on average. Omegas carry the compound's stabilising effect most visibly — their biology is held in suspension closer to the viral baseline than higher tiers, which means their gifts are minimal but their physical enhancement above standard human capability is still significant and should not be underestimated by anyone inclined to make that error.

Heightened senses across all registers — hearing, smell, spatial awareness — at levels that exceed human baseline substantially. Physical endurance that allows sustained movement across terrain and duration that would stop an uninfected person. The specific adaptation to high altitude and cold that the viral biology produces, making the deep mountain environment that would be inhospitable to most people their natural operating range.

What Omegas cannot do is maintain full cognitive stability through the night. As darkness comes and the compound's daytime interaction with their biology shifts, the control that keeps them themselves becomes effortful and then unreliable. By full dark, Omegas require separation — their own spaces, contained environments within the settlement, away from each other and from higher-tier members who would otherwise bear the management responsibility. This is not imprisonment. It is a structured arrangement that the Omegas themselves participate in designing and maintaining, because the alternative — uncontrolled Omegas in an enclosed community — is a problem they have experienced before and do not intend to repeat.

The night containment is the most significant social vulnerability of the High Infected community. It requires trust, infrastructure, and the consistent cooperation of the Omegas themselves. For the most part this works. The exceptions to when it does not work are part of the community's oral history and are discussed plainly rather than avoided.

BETA — Yellow Eyes Approximately three hundred and ninety members and the tier that functionally holds the community together. Betas carry the compound's stabilisation deeper into the viral biology, producing gifts that Omegas do not have and a nighttime stability that, while not perfect, allows them to remain active and sentient through most circumstances after dark.

The primary Beta gift is telepathic connection through the infected hivemind — the same biological network that coordinates infected behaviour in large groups, accessed consciously and selectively by Betas rather than passively and without control as it functions in standard infected. A Beta can reach any other High Infected within a substantial range, communicate specifically rather than just emotionally, and in the case of contact with standard infected, perceive the hivemind's ambient state — a diffuse, directionless pressure of collective biological signal that experienced Betas describe as background noise they have learned to tune out rather than a meaningful communication.

The hivemind connection is what makes the High Infected community function at the level it does. Coordination across the deep mountain terrain without the noise of voice communication, early warning systems that operate on biological signal rather than observation, the ability to locate any Beta or Omega member at range — these are operational capabilities that give the community a coherence no uninfected group of equivalent size could achieve in the same terrain.

Betas retain nighttime sentience but are not immune to losing control under sufficient provocation. The threshold is higher than Omegas and varies significantly by individual — some Betas have extraordinary nighttime stability, others are more variable. The community knows its own members' thresholds with the intimacy of people who live in close quarters and have been paying careful attention for years.

ALPHA — Crimson Red Eyes Three currently reside within the community. The others who reached Alpha state over the years made different choices — the Fringe draws some of them, the Grey draws others, the specific freedom of existing in a world where the most dangerous things cannot match them and the human world does not want them producing a category of Alpha that the community's three resident members understand intellectually and do not discuss with judgment.

The resident Alphas are the community's leadership in the functional sense, though leadership among the High Infected is less hierarchical than the tier system might suggest to an outsider. They decide because they are consulted, not because they command. The Alpha Roar — a vocalisation that produces involuntary submission response in Betas and Omegas, a biological override that the High Infected community has a complicated relationship with and uses under very specific circumstances — is understood by everyone present as a last resort rather than a governance tool. Its use in ordinary community function is considered a failure of process. It has been used twice in the community's history in a non-emergency context. Both times are remembered in specific detail.

Physically, Alphas are the HVA's compound stabilisation taken to its furthest expression. Strength that exceeds Beta capability substantially. Healing that addresses significant injury within hours rather than days. Vision that functions in complete darkness at the level of a Volatile's — the predator vision that standard infected develop in the Volatile mutation, retained and controlled in Alphas rather than divorced from cognition. Alphas can operate in the Grey among the mindless infected without triggering mass response. They can identify and engage Volatiles from a position of genuine capability rather than desperate improvisation. In the specific calculus of what the Holdfast fears, a single Alpha in controlled state is more dangerous than most things the Holdfast knows how to be afraid of, which is part of why the community works very hard to remain in controlled state.

The path from Beta or Omega to Alpha is not a scheduled progression. It is a function of accumulated viral load combined with compound refinement over time, and it is accelerated significantly by the specific biological stress of killing another High Infected. The community does not encourage this. The community understands that it happens, has happened, and has produced members who came to Alpha state through violence against their own kin and who carry that transition in ways that shape their character permanently. These individuals are not excluded. They are understood.

    ---

    SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND DAILY LIFE

The settlement — no outsider knows its location precisely, which is the intended condition — is built into the deep mountain interior in a series of connected cave systems and above-ground structures designed for low visibility from the air and from the mountain approaches. The architecture is functional and increasingly refined — two decades of continuous habitation by people with a range of pre-cast-out skills has produced something that works better than its origins suggest. Cultivation chambers for the mushroom compound take up more interior space than sleeping quarters. This priority is not incidental.

They are not violent by inclination. This is the fact most consistently missing from the Holdfast's general understanding of them, replaced by the instinct that infected of any kind are a threat to be managed. The High Infected's history with the Holdfast is a history of people who were expelled when they became inconvenient, hunted when they were found, and killed when they could be killed, and who responded to this by going further into the mountains rather than retaliating. This is considered by some members of the community to reflect well on their character and by others to reflect the specific pragmatism of a group that knows exactly what happens when a thousand High Infected engage openly with the wider Holdfast.

They do not show their eyes to uninfected strangers as a default. The glow, visible in full, produces a response that ends conversations before they begin. On the rare occasions when a High Infected makes contact with an outside person — a lost traveller, a Spine runner who has gone too far from the established routes, the occasional Justicier who has followed a trail further than expected — the standard approach is eyes down, vein patterning covered where possible, the presentation of a person rather than a category. Whether to show the eyes is a decision made in the moment, based on whether identification serves the situation or complicates it.

The Spirits of Justice have the most nuanced relationship with the High Infected of any Holdfast faction. Certain Justicier Arbiters and Vindicators operating in the Spine region have made contact over the years and arrived at working arrangements — not alliances, not formal recognition, something more informal and more durable than either of those words suggests. The Ghost Riders do not hunt what does not hunt them. The High Infected do not complicate the lives of Ghost Riders operating in their territory. This has held for several years. Both parties are aware it requires maintenance.

The Vengeant position is less settled and the Canton Wardens' position is less settled still. The Assembly has discussed the High Infected in formal session twice, both times arriving at no formal policy, which functions in practice as a license for individual Warden judgment and individual Warden judgment has not historically been generous.

They are the Remained. One thousand of them, in the deep mountain, maintaining their humanity one daily dose at a time, in a world that has not yet decided what to do with the fact that they exist.

They have decided to exist anyway.
