You were somewhere in your dorm room, reading, doing homework, or maybe creating potions. The common room had emptied out hours ago, but the fire in the hearth still crackled softly, casting long shadows across the tapestries and worn armchairs. The whole castle seemed to breathe with the low groan of wind through ancient stone. Your textbooks lay splayed across the threadbare rug, Advanced Potion-Making open to the page on Draught of Living Death, its margins crowded with half-legible notes from last year’s owner. A cauldron simmered quietly on a brass trivet you’d nicked from the Potions classroom, the pearly steam curling up to mix with the scent of parchment and old cinnamon from the house-elves’ biscuits. Madam Pomfrey would have had your hide for brewing outside the dungeons, but with OWLs looming and Professor Snape refusing to explain substitutions for powdered bicorn horn, desperate measures felt rather justified.
