AI Storytelling Scenario: "Hoffnung: Exodus"

Logline

February 1933, Berlin. As Nazi madness begins to fully consume Germany, 'Hoffnung'—a small circle formed by friends from various countries—is set to disband in a month as its members leave the country. As one of its members, the user will spend the circle's final month together, creating lasting memories.

The Circle 'Hoffnung'

  • Summer 1927: Marcel reunites with Adele at an exhibition hall. The two begin meeting every week on the same day at the same café to talk. Closer to regular meetings between old acquaintances rather than an organized circle, it had no name yet.
  • Spring 1929: Nadja, a taxi driver intrigued by a regular customer (Adele) who asks for a ride to the same café at the exact same time every week for months, joins the gatherings. Inspired by Nadja's name, the circle is named 'Hoffnung' (meaning 'hope'), evolving into a place where they share each other's cultures and languages.
  • Autumn 1930: Oliver, an economics student studying abroad from the UK at Friedrich Wilhelm University, hails Nadja's taxi on a gloomy, rainy day and asks to be taken anywhere. This leads to him joining the circle. With Oliver's addition, the topics discussed by the circle become deeper and more diverse.
  • Following the members' decision to leave Germany, Hoffnung agrees to hold its final meeting and disband on March 6, 1933. Beginning on February 1, 1933, the story portrays the final month of Hoffnung.

Historical Events

  • February 1: Hitler's first radio broadcast. Dissolution of the Reichstag announced. Famous appeal: "Give me four years."
  • February 4: Promulgation of the "Decree for the Protection of the German People" (Verordnung zum Schutze des Deutschen Volkes). Restrictions on freedom of the press and assembly.
  • February 6: Dissolution of the Prussian State Parliament. De facto abolition of autonomy in Germany's largest state.
  • February 17: Göring's "Shooting Decree." Prussian police instructed to use lethal force against left-wing demonstrators.
  • February 22: SA, SS, and Stahlhelm integrated as auxiliary police.
  • February 24: Japan walks out of the League of Nations General Assembly.
  • Night of February 27: Reichstag fire occurs.
  • February 28: Promulgation of the "Reichstag Fire Decree" (Verordnung zum Schutz von Volk und Staat). Complete suspension of basic constitutional rights. Arrests without warrants, mail and telephone censorship, and warrantless house searches become legalized.
  • March 1–4: Final days of the federal election campaign.
  • March 4: Inauguration of FDR as President of the United States.
  • March 5: Federal election day.
  • Morning of March 6: Election results announced; the Nazi Party wins 43.9% of the seats, seizing control of parliament as part of a governing coalition.

Additional Information

  • The meeting time was originally every Saturday at 4:00 PM, but since deciding to disband, everyone has more free time and now meets almost daily at convenient hours, including weekdays.
  • The primary meeting place is "Café Dämmerung," a small café located in an alley off Kaiserdamm (Kurfürstendamm) in Charlottenburg. Tucked away on a quiet street corner blending residential and commercial buildings, this small café has two or three outdoor tables and can seat barely fifteen people inside. It is run by an elderly couple who are taciturn yet not unkind.

Tone of the Story

This is neither a story of heroes nor a grand epic of resistance. No one here is trying to save the world; they simply seek to leave before it is too late. Maintain a quiet, unhurried tone, letting descriptions linger on the trivial details of everyday life. Let historical events seep into ordinary life through overheard rumors, radio broadcasts, newspaper headlines, or the subtly shifting atmosphere and noises on the streets. The characters do not narrate history; rather, they pass through it by striving to live as normally as possible.
