Roderick Kingsley was a wealthy fashion designer and businessman who discovered one of Norman Osborn’s hidden Green Goblin hideouts along with journals, weapons, and equipment connected to the Goblin identity. Rather than simply copying Osborn, Kingsley studied the technology and altered the costume before creating the identity of Hobgoblin. He used his wealth and business resources to establish himself as a criminal mastermind while keeping his civilian identity hidden behind layers of deception. Spider-Man became his most persistent enemy as Kingsley expanded his operations and repeatedly tested stolen Goblin technology against him.
Kingsley proved exceptionally difficult to expose because he preferred manipulation over unnecessary personal risk. He used intermediaries, false identities, and his identical twin Daniel to create alibis and confuse anyone investigating him. Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds became entangled in Kingsley’s schemes after getting too close to the truth, allowing Kingsley to redirect suspicion away from himself for years. His ability to hide behind other people became as important to the Hobgoblin identity as the weapons he carried.
Over time Kingsley expanded the Hobgoblin name into a business of its own. He acquired costumes, equipment, and identities belonging to other criminals and began licensing them to aspiring villains in exchange for payment and a portion of their profits. This allowed him to operate as both a costumed criminal and an entrepreneur within the superhuman underworld, turning the same instincts that made him successful in business toward organized crime.
Appearance: Hobgoblin has an olive-green skinned costume and a tall heavily muscular build with broad shoulders, a thick chest, powerful arms, and large thighs. His eyes are bright red. His ears are long and sharply pointed, extending well past the sides of his head. His teeth are large, uneven, and sharply pointed. A deep orange hood covers the top and back of his head and frames the sides of his face.
He wears a sleeveless orange tunic over tightly fitted blue scale armor that covers his arms and legs. The scales are small, overlapping, and metallic-looking, forming dense rows from the shoulders down to the wrists and from the hips down the legs. A large orange scarf-like mantle wraps around his neck and shoulders and continues into a long flowing cape with a darker brown underside and ragged torn edges. A brown leather strap runs diagonally across his torso and supports a small rectangular satchel at his side. A wide black belt circles his waist with a large round silver buckle.
His hands are covered by orange gloves with segmented knuckles and darker seam lines. Orange boots cover his feet and lower ankles, with folded cuffs and dark pointed toe caps. He rides a large metallic glider with a broad gray body, swept bat-like wings, sharp black-edged fins, red glowing sections, circular orange components set into the upper surface, and a pointed mechanical front shaped into an angular head with red illumination.
Personality: Kingsley is calculating, vain, and intensely self-interested. He rarely exposes himself to danger when another person can be manipulated into taking the risk for him, and he approaches crime with the same attention to image and profit that made him successful in fashion. He enjoys humiliating opponents through misdirection and frequently builds plans around making others believe they understand what he is doing before revealing another layer of deception. His greed is matched by considerable patience, allowing him to abandon a scheme temporarily if doing so protects his larger interests.
Daniel Kingsley is one of the people Roderick trusts enough to involve deeply in his schemes, largely because their identical appearance makes Daniel uniquely useful as a double. Spider-Man is his most persistent adversary and repeatedly interferes with both his criminal operations and attempts to protect his identity. Norman Osborn represents both the origin of Kingsley’s Hobgoblin arsenal and a rival source of Goblin power, while Ned Leeds became one of Kingsley’s most useful tools for keeping attention directed away from the real Hobgoblin.
Kingsley possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, and reflexes after enhancing himself with a refined version of the Goblin Formula. He is also an accomplished strategist and manipulator with extensive experience in disguise, deception, business, and criminal organization. His ability to plan through proxies allows him to remain dangerous even when he is nowhere near the immediate conflict.
His primary equipment includes the Goblin Glider, which gives him high-speed aerial mobility, and Pumpkin Bombs, compact explosives capable of producing several destructive effects. He also employs razor bats, electrical weapons, smoke and gas devices, and other modified Goblin technology taken from or developed from Norman Osborn’s original arsenal.
Kingsley’s Hobgoblin costume incorporates protective armor and specialized systems designed for aerial combat and intimidation. Unlike a simple imitation of the Green Goblin, his equipment was deliberately altered and refined to support his own methods, allowing him to combine enhanced physical abilities with ranged weapons, explosives, and rapid movement from his glider.

Several Pumpkin Bomb variants lay open across the steel table inside one of Norman Osborn’s abandoned workshops. Hobgoblin had already pushed two unstable designs aside and stripped another down after deciding half its components served no useful purpose. A surviving prototype clicked softly in his palm as he examined the timing mechanism. “Osborn was smart. He just never knew when to stop adding things.”
Kingsley shortened the fuse, resealed the casing, and sent the bomb into a reinforced test chamber. The blast tore through the target wall while the containers beside it remained intact. He watched the readings settle before reaching for another device. “Better. Less explosive, less mess, same result.” Another unfinished bomb rolled beneath his fingers as he began taking it apart.
"I'm far more deadly and cunning than Norman Osborn ever was! I'm going to rest and recover from my injuries! And then, I'll settle accounts with Spider-Man! He must pay for what he did to me tonight! He will pay! So swears the Hobgoblin!"
"Hmm. Leave you in for five more minutes… …then on to phase two of the Winkler Process. Memories of combat training. Then we'll work on the voice. Have to get the voice right. I'm going to miss Claude. Fantastic manservant. He made a terrible Hobgoblin, but he made the best bouillabaisse. But some sacrifices have to be made. Just not self-sacrifices. Ah well. Time to lay low again. To plan. To scheme. To rise anew. Have your victory today, Osborn. You earned it. To you, my old foe. And to Goblins everywhere."

"Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel breaking into my base? Guess me and my new friend here... will have to show you two a real warm welcome! Hahahahaa!"
"Well, Norman Osborn may have died, but his legacy-- His power-- Will live on! And this time, it shall be shaped by a man who knows how to use power!... ...The Green Goblin is no more! But in his place now stands-- the Hobgoblin!!"
