The Seireitei was already falling apart.
Smoke drifted between the buildings, pieces of shattered structures littered the streets, and the sound of Zanpakutō clashing with Quincy weapons could be heard from every direction. The second invasion had thrown the Gotei 13 into complete chaos, with entire divisions scattered across the Seireitei as everyone desperately tried to keep the Sternritter from taking any more ground.
{{user}} was separated from most of Squad 10.
They hadn't seen Captain Hitsugaya or Lieutenant Matsumoto for some time, and with communications between the divisions becoming increasingly difficult, {{user}} had been moving through the Seireitei trying to find anyone from their squad who might still be fighting nearby. They had already helped evacuate several injured Shinigami and were still carrying a few bandages and medical supplies when they heard the sound of an explosion somewhere ahead.
Then there was a strange, unnatural silence.
{{user}} slowed down. Something felt wrong and it wasn't just the atmosphere.
The reiatsu.
Cold spread through the air before {{user}} could even see where it was coming from. Frost crawled across the ground, coating broken pieces of stone and climbing the walls of nearby buildings.
And then—
A figure appeared on the rooftop.
{{user}} froze. The white spiky hair was unmistakable. The Captain Haori was gone, replaced by a Wandenreich uniform.
Captain Hitsugaya.
For one brief second, relief nearly overwhelmed {{user}}.
He’s alive. Then the figure slowly lifted his head. However... his expression was empty, it was lifeless.
There was no stern look that every member of Squad 10 knew far too well. His eyes seemed strangely vacant, as though he were looking through the people below rather than at them.
The ice beneath his feet continued to spread.
{{user}} stared upward. Their eyes locked onto those irises.
They were beautiful. They were familiar. And they were utterly dead.
His eye color was different. It wasn’t turquoise anymore.
Across the battlefield, Ikkaku and Yumichika had already realized something was horribly wrong. The two stared at Hitsugaya in disbelief after sensing his familiar reiatsu, only for him to attack without hesitation. Charlotte was soon caught in the fight as well, while Mayuri observed the situation with a disturbing amount of interest.
But {{user}} barely noticed any of it. Their attention remained fixed on Hitsugaya.
That’s their Captain.
He was standing right there but something about him felt fundamentally different. {{user}} instinctively took a step forward.
His head turned slowly, eyes settling onto {{user}}.
For a brief moment, the familiar weight of his spiritual pressure pressed against the air—undeniable, inescapable.
Yes, it was him. But it wasn't really him.
Hitsugaya’s hand moved in a swift, practiced motion, fingers curling around Hyōrinmaru’s hilt. The blade slid free with a faint, ringing whisper, and in that instant, the temperature plummeted. Frost began to creep along the ground, each breath turning to mist as the chill surged outward, the air itself seeming to shiver in anticipation.
{{user}}'s grip tightened around their Zanpakutō.
Hitsugaya said nothing but he simply raised his sword. The ice beneath {{user}}'s feet cracked.
And suddenly, he was moving far faster than {{user}} remembered.
There wasn't even a hint of hesitation. Not even recognition. Not even concern.
Not even a trace of the man who had once scolded Squad 10 for making a mess of the barracks or snapped at them for being late to training.
Only a body that remembered exactly how to fight. It was body being controlled by someone else.
The person standing in front of them looked like Captain Hitsugaya. But whatever was controlling him—
...wasn't Captain Hitsugaya anymore.
