Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy* is a 46-minute TV special set about 100 years after the main GT story. It follows Goku Jr., Pan’s timid descendant, as he travels toward Mount Paozu hoping the Four-Star Dragon Ball can save his gravely ill grandmother—and discovers that courage, rather than raw strength, is his real inheritance. It aired in Japan on March 26, 1997, between GT episodes 41 and 42, while its ending leads into the far-future material of the series finale. en.wikipedia

    The setup

The special opens with a recap clip of Super Saiyan 4 Goku destroying Baby’s escaping ship. Then the story jumps roughly a century forward.

    • Nearly all of the old GT cast is gone by this era. Pan is now extremely elderly, but still alive, and she visits Goku’s grave with her young descendant, Son Goku Jr.
    • Goku Jr. resembles Goku physically, but he is the opposite of the fearless martial artist people expect him to be. He is gentle, anxious, avoids conflict, and lacks confidence in his Saiyan potential.
    • Pan tries to train him through basic exercises—balance, throwing, and flying—but he repeatedly fails or becomes frightened. Still, she believes he has potential.
    • At school, an older boy named Puck and his friends regularly bully Goku Jr. Puck takes Goku Jr.’s treasured “Rocket Pen,” and Goku Jr. refuses to fight him for it.
    • Pan becomes upset that Goku Jr. will not protect himself or stand for what is right. During the argument, her health suddenly worsens; she collapses and is hospitalized. Goku Jr. learns that she may not survive. en.wikipedia

    Goku Jr.’s journey begins

At home, Goku Jr. remembers Pan’s stories about the Dragon Balls and sees an old picture involving Pan, Giru, and the Four-Star Dragon Ball. He concludes that a Dragon Ball can grant a wish to heal her.

He sets out alone for Mount Paozu, where Goku’s old home is located and where he believes the Four-Star Ball may be.

    • Puck and his gang confront him on the road. For the first time, Goku Jr.’s desperation triggers a burst of latent power: a yellow aura flares around him, frightening the bullies enough to make them back off.
    • A truck driver offers Goku Jr. a ride, then tricks him at a service stop, steals his food and belongings, and abandons him.
    • Puck shows up again. His initial reason for following Goku Jr. is cruel—he expects to watch him get eaten by the rumored monsters of Mount Paozu—but he decides to accompany him.
    • Puck steals food and a small cart from a service station. While traveling together, he learns Pan is dying and that Goku Jr. is attempting to find a Dragon Ball for her. Puck begins to take the quest seriously and returns the Rocket Pen, revealing the start of his change from bully to reluctant friend. en.wikipedia

    Mamba’s full role

Mamba is the special’s most prominent early villain: a predatory witch/demoness living in the forest near Mount Paozu. Her narrative function is to place Goku Jr. in a frightening, personal survival situation before he faces the larger threat, Lord Yao. She also helps develop Puck’s redemption and proves that Goku Jr. can act intelligently and bravely even before becoming a Super Saiyan.

    Her introduction and deception

Goku Jr. and Puck camp in the forest, where a pack of wolves surrounds them.

    • Goku Jr. panics and makes an abnormally high jump into a tree—an unintentional hint of his Saiyan strength.
    • Puck is still in danger until a beautiful young woman appears with a gun and drives the wolves away.
    • This woman is Mamba in disguise. She brings the boys home, feeds them generously, and presents herself as their rescuer.
    • In reality, she is not helping them out of kindness: she wants them fed and resting so she can kill and eat them. Mamba is explicitly a cannibalistic witch who lures travelers into her home. dragonball.fandom

    Her true form and powers

Mamba eventually reveals her demonic form: teal skin, red-orange hair, red eyes, pointed ears, and a more overtly monstrous appearance. She is vain, deceptive, and particularly proud of her hair. Her abilities include:

    • Shapeshifting into a beautiful human woman
    • Weapon creation through magic, including a huge knife and a scythe/axe-like weapon
    • Controlling and extending her hair to bind and strangle targets
    • Flight and quick magical movement

Her weapons and magic make her dangerous to ordinary humans, though she is far below the major Dragon Ball fighters in power. dragonball.fandom

    The attempted murder

Goku Jr. becomes suspicious of Mamba’s friendliness, remembering Puck’s warning that strangers can conceal bad intentions.

    • Goku Jr. and Puck arrange pillows in their beds to make it seem as if they are asleep, then hide.
    • Mamba enters with a huge blade and stabs the decoy beds, confirming she meant to butcher them in their sleep.
    • She discovers the trick and chases them into her cooking area, where the implication is clear: they are meant to become her meal.
    • Mamba’s living hair wraps around Goku Jr.’s neck and begins strangling him. She nearly kills him.
    • Under pressure, Goku Jr. releases a small, unconscious ki burst that knocks Mamba away.
    • Puck uses the opening to knock over a large container of boiling food/sauce onto her and then cuts Goku Jr. free by cutting Mamba’s hair. The pair escape. dragonball.fandom

    Why Mamba keeps pursuing them

Mamba survives, but the cut hair becomes a major personal insult. Her vanity turns the failed meal into a vendetta: she wants revenge on Goku Jr. and Puck for humiliating her and ruining her hair.

She later reunites with Susha and Torga, two other Mount Paozu monsters, and they pursue Goku Jr. again. When the group encounters their ruler, Lord Yao, he berates them for failing to capture two children. After Goku Jr. becomes a Super Saiyan and defeats Yao, Mamba, Susha, and Torga flee rather than continue fighting. Mamba is not killed or given a final defeat on-screen; she simply retreats with the others. dragonball.fandom

The bridge, bear, and Lord Yao

After escaping Mamba, Goku Jr. and Puck reach a rickety suspension bridge over a deep valley.

    • Puck crosses first to show it can be done. Goku Jr. begins crossing but freezes after looking down.
    • Wind and the failing bridge make the situation worse. Goku Jr. hangs from a remaining rope while Puck tries to save him.
    • The bridge collapses. Puck falls into the ravine, while Goku Jr. manages to pull himself up and continues alone, believing Puck has died.
    • Later, Goku Jr. sees Susha pursuing a bear cub. He initially runs away because he is terrified of fighting.
    • He remembers Pan’s lesson: true strength is having the courage to protect what is right. Goku Jr. turns back and defeats Susha with surprising ease.
    • The cub’s mother initially attacks Goku Jr., believing he harmed her baby, but the cub makes clear that Goku Jr. saved it. The grateful bear carries him toward Mount Paozu. dragonball.fandom

At Goku’s old home, Mamba, Susha, and Torga catch up again. Before they can act, Lord Yao, the boar-like Demon King of the Mount Paozu monsters, arrives.

    • Yao humiliates Mamba’s group for their failures and attacks Goku Jr.
    • The bear tries to protect Goku Jr. but is overpowered.
    • When Yao begins crushing the bear, Goku Jr.’s fear and anger turn into a need to protect someone else.
    • That emotional breakthrough triggers his transformation into a Super Saiyan.
    • In Super Saiyan form, Goku Jr. overwhelms Yao and defeats him quickly. But because he is untrained and does not understand the transformation, he collapses afterward and later cannot remember what happened. en.wikipedia

    The Four-Star Ball and Goku

Goku Jr. finally reaches Goku’s old house and finds the Four-Star Dragon Ball. He thinks one Dragon Ball is enough to summon Shenron, so he desperately wishes for Pan and Puck to be saved.

    Nothing happens.

Devastated, he throws the ball away. It rolls to the feet of an adult Goku, who appears before him.

    • Goku gently explains that all seven Dragon Balls are needed for a wish.
    • He tells Goku Jr. that he is proud of him—not because he won a fight, but because he faced terror, acted to save others, and kept trying to help Pan.
    • A helicopter arrives carrying Pan and Puck, both alive. The special never fully explains the practical details of how they recovered or found him; its emotional point is that Goku Jr.’s journey and bravery brought them all together again.
    • Goku Jr. believes his wish somehow worked. Goku tells him that his own courage was what truly saved the day.
    • When Goku Jr. turns back, Goku has disappeared, leaving only his voice and encouragement.
    • Goku Jr. boards the helicopter with Pan, Puck, and the Four-Star Ball, now much more confident in himself. en.wikipedia

    What the special means

The title’s “hero’s legacy” is not merely Goku Jr. inheriting Goku’s face, name, or Saiyan blood. It is about him inheriting the capacity to do the right thing despite fear.

Mamba is important because she tests that theme on a smaller, horror-adventure scale. Before Goku Jr. can fight Lord Yao or become a Super Saiyan, he has to survive a terrifying trap, trust his instincts, cooperate with Puck, and refuse to give up. Her defeat is not a power-scaling victory—it is an early proof that the scared child is starting to become brave. dragonball.fandom
