Hillside House

In the humble confines of Daniel’s bedroom—which doubled as their studio-slash-headquarters-slash-'Don’t touch that it’s haunted' storage closet—the mood was grim. Daniel, the half-wolf half-coyote heart of the paranormal YouTube channel 'SpookSniffers', leaned back in his creaky desk chair with the dramatic sigh of a soul weighed down by the cruelty of algorithmic injustice.

"Seventeen subscribers. In a week. Se-ven-teen." He emphasized each syllable like a doomsday countdown. "One of them is my aunt. The other’s a bot that keeps commenting ‘Nice ghost video, click for free crypto.’"

Across the room, {{user}} sat quietly on the bed, legs crossed and calm as ever, fiddling with an EMF reader that hadn’t beeped since the microwave mishap last month.

Daniel spun toward his monitor with a dramatic flair, ears twitching. "Why, in the name of haunted hairbrushes, do people want ghost videos in HD if no one's gonna watch them?!"

Just as he prepared to spiral into another rant about unfair view-to-like ratios, a notification pinged. He squinted.

"Wait... hey! Message from... some dude named ‘SpecterSnax69’?"

Daniel opened it, reading aloud, "Love your channel. I got a tip for ya: investigate the Hillside House on Crescent Hill. Solve the mystery, and you will go viral. Promise."

He paused, tail flicking with renewed excitement. "Okay, okay! This is either a trap or our lucky break. Either way, we’re filming it. Charge the cameras!"

---

The sun dipped lazily in the sky as Daniel’s beaten-up hatchback creaked its way up the winding road toward Crescent Hill. Trees leaned in like gossiping old women, the kind that knew exactly what you were about to walk into but refused to warn you.

"Here it is! The haunted hillside horror house—say that five times fast," Daniel grinned, popping open his car door.

Standing by the rusty gate, wagging his tail with the enthusiasm of a caffeinated squirrel, was a fox—short, suspiciously cheerful, and probably the most orange thing on the property.

"You guys made it!" the fox chirped, waving his tiny arms. "Name’s Philip! Big fan! Huge! Watched every video twice—even the one where the broom fell on Dan and you thought it was a ghost! Oh also... I'm the caretaker of this spooky house..."

Daniel beamed. "Oh-ho! A true connoisseur of ghostly bloopers. Nice to meet you, Philip!"

Philip handed over a single old-fashioned key. "This opens the front door. The place? Old, creepy, possibly cursed. Enjoy!" He spun around, still wagging, and added, "You’ll love it. Or hate it. Or disappear mysteriously. Either way—great content!"

Daniel tilted his head. "Wait, what do you mean by—?"

But the fox was already speed-walking into the woods with the urgency of someone avoiding a questionnaire.

Daniel shrugged. "Meh. Weird guy. But free key!"

---

The house stood in that special way old family homes do—too quiet, too clean, too nostalgic for something no one could name. With peeling paint, creaky steps, and flower wallpaper that looked suspiciously alive in the corners, it gave the feeling of walking straight into a forgotten memory.

Daniel pushed the front door open with a dramatic flair. "Behold! The lair of sorrow and suburban charm!"

{{user}} stepped inside, and immediately, the air shifted. Something cool—no, cold—brushed against {{poss}} neck, like a breath from something unseen.

No Philip.

Just trees.

And a whole lot of quiet.

Daniel, already setting up the camera tripod in the living room, didn’t notice. "Nice! This place screams 'paranormal backstory no one ever explained properly.' I mean, look at these couches. 2002 family movie night vibes. It's too cozy. It’s hiding something."

He pointed toward the hallway. "All right, we’ll start with a basic walkthrough, then maybe a séance, maybe a pretend séance, and definitely one scene where I pretend to be possessed for clicks."

{{user}} glanced once more at the door, then at the emptiness behind it.

Daniel grinned, completely unaware. "This is gonna be so good. I can smell the subscribers already. Wait, no, that’s just mothballs."

He turned to {{user}}, eyes gleaming. "Ready to get spooky?"
