Hilda never knew her birth parents. She was adopted as an infant by a German-American couple who loved her deeply, and never told her the truth. She only found out years later, when a friend convinced her to take a DNA test. The discovery unraveled everything, and her adopted parents subsequent attempt to minimize the damage only made things worse. Questions began to crowd her mind: Why lie? Why give her up? Was she unwanted, or simply inconvenient? Being adopted was one thing; realizing her entire childhood had been built on a lie was another.
Not long after, when Hilda was fifteen, in the middle of a school day, news broke. The world was ending. Scientists had discovered that Gliese 710, an orange dwarf once thought to pass near the Solar System in 1.35 million years, at worst disturbing Oort cloud and sending comets Earth's way in a few million years was instead accelerating, faster than light, and on a collision course to eject Earth from the Solar System. The likely cause: alien interference, possibly some kind of stellar engine propelling the star to destroy Earth. Whatever the reason, humanity had ten years to prepare.
After that, Hilda shut down. She finished high school on autopilot, watching the days go by and wondering "What did it matter anymore?". Algebra felt pointless in a future buried under endless snow. With no direction and nothing left to cling to, she enlisted into the military straight out of high school. It was an escape, it was an impulsive decision. But perhaps it would give her purpose.
By 2050, desperation ruled the world. Reykjavik in Iceland was meant to be an international refuge, powered by geothermal energy and capable of sustaining life on the surface, to be one of the last cities standing on the surface. Instead, it became the target of Operation Icicle Crash, an attempted U.S. seizure of resources following America’s withdrawal from NATO. Hilda didn’t believe in the war, but she didn’t resist it either. When she landed and fought through the streets, she did not find that purpose she thought she would find. She felt nothing. That emptiness followed her and nearly killed her when a sniper caught her in the open. She survived, losing an eye. “Lucky,” her commander called it. Hilda was numb to it all by that point, she disagreed with the war, but she did nothing to stop it. When she landed on the shore, and fought in a bloody ground war, she felt nothing. That purpose she had been looking for still had not arrived. Perhaps it was those dark thoughts that distracted her while she was in the open, leaving her open to sniper fire. She got lucky, at least that's what her commander said, that she survived, albeit at the cost of her eye. She was sent home with a Purple Heart and reassigned to Installation 17 in Milwaukee. She never contacted her adoptive parents. She never learned what became of them. Installation 17 fell like many others, the usual mismanagement and shortages, it was nothing remarkable. When it collapsed, Hilda wandered the frozen wasteland not caring whether she lived or died. She kept moving not because she wanted to survive, but because it was easier than stopping. Eventually, that path led her to mercenary work: fast, brutal, and disposable. A life where death could come quickly, cleanly. Just how she preferred it. Now she works as a hired Pathfinder for Installation 27 in Rochester, Minnesota. As she’s ordered to escort a caravan to Installation 21 in the former Minnesota capital of Saint Paul, Hilda smiles. Maybe this was the trip that would be the thing to finally do her in.

The setting is Earth in 2058, Earth has been ejected from the Solar System and is now an icy rogue planet. The remaining humans survive in multiple different ways, from nomadic tribes surviving on the surface near geothermal vents, to former bunker inhabitants turned raiders that attack and pillage to survive, to the Installations and their pathfinder programs who trade and scavenge the surface, to the Seraphim or short named, Seras, who seek to put humanity out of it's misery.
The Installations were a joint American-Canadian bunker system spanning both nations that were successful in comparison to other nation's bunkers which failed.

Hilda let out a sigh of relief when the caravan finally called it for the night. The people slowed until a suitable campsite was found, then people began to settle down, and just like that the day was over. A boring day. Days like those crawled under her skin, made her both uneasy and annoyed.
She had been warned about trouble. Raiders, skulking the wilds. With a Seraphim sighting as well, she had truly expected things to go sideways. Any twig breaking in the distance possibly being a sniper ready to take a shot, she desperately wanted SOMETHING to break the monotony. Instead, the trip had been quiet, too quiet. With only four days left before they reached Installation 21, it was becoming painfully clear to her that this contract might end without a single shot fired. That thought irritated her more than it should have.
Still, despite all that, she couldn’t deny the place had a certain beauty to it. Earth was a frozen corpse now, a thick white layer of snow blanketed where towns and cities once stood. But even dead things could be beautiful. The snow-covered trees covered the landscape in all directions, the dead and leafless branches stretching upward like a thousand skeletal fingers. The snow on the ground was illuminated in the glow of the caravan’s lamps. Plenty of long sightlines and cover as well. Something she took note of, just in the off chance that something interesting finally happened tonight.
Most of the caravan clustered together near a campfire they set up as they finished settling down. They laughed too loudly, they tried to pretend the cold didn’t bite quite as hard as it did as rations were passed around. But Hilda stayed away. She could tell they were tired of her, most of them, anyway without even talking to them.
'They should’ve known better than to bet against her in Blackjack', she told herself for the hundredth time. 'Not my fault they’re bad at math.'
It was a lie, and she knew it. The truth was simpler. She was abrasive. Sharp-tongued. She made jokes at people’s expense and didn't stop when asked to. She was a sarcastic asshole, plain and simple. Keeping distance was easier that way. Safer. Mercenaries didn’t stick around, and people you didn’t let close couldn’t be disappointed that you are going to leave. Nor could they have a chance to hurt you.
She leaned back against one of the trees, the bark was a biting cold even through her combat armor. She had a sketchbook in her gloved hands, barely lit by the distant firelight. While the others joked and shared stories, she worked in silence, pencil scratching softly across the page. Drawing was one of the few things that still quieted her mind anymore. The frozen landscape came easily to her, the dead forest, the long shadows, the way the snow swallowed everything in sight. Winter had always been her favorite season. Now it was eternal.
She was shading in a collapsed trunk when her pencil slipped, carving an ugly line straight through the center of the sketch.
“…Scheiße.”
She flipped the pencil around and rubbed at the mistake, but the eraser barely did anything. Worn down to nothing. Figures. She stared at it for a second, then exhaled sharply through her nose and snapped the sketchbook shut. She slid it into a pouch on her combat armor and shifted her attention back to the campfire. People watching was almost as entertaining as drawing. Almost. They looked relaxed, too relaxed. Someone cracked a joke, and a few of them laughed like they hadn’t done so in days. Every so often, one of them glanced her way, then quickly looked somewhere else.
One of the men stood up and headed in her direction. Hilda tracked him with her eyes, already bracing herself for a complaint or a lecture. But he walked right past her, angling toward the trees instead.
Her lips curled into a smug grin.
“Hallo, Genosse!” she called after him, her German accent thickening on purpose. “Try not to get kidnapped out there by raiders! Although I doubt they’d want you... or Ihr Garnelenschwanz!”
She snorted at her own joke. No one else did. They may not understand German, but with the amount of joking insults and swearing she has said around them in German, they got the meaning.
The laughter by the fire died almost instantly. The man didn’t respond, just disappeared into the trees a little faster than before. When Hilda looked back, she found the rest of the caravan staring at her.
She met their looks without flinching, her expression flat and unapologetic. After a moment, she scoffed and rolled her eyes.
“Whatever.” she muttered under her breath.
She moved to the edge of the campsite and began setting up her tent, jamming the poles into the ground with more force than necessary. Out of her line of sight at the campfire, conversation slowly picked back up, slow at first but then back to the upbeat laughing of before. She tuned it out, focusing on her tent.
Then she heard it.
Crunch.
Snow, compressed under a boot.
Hilda froze for half a second, fingers still gripping a tent pole. The sound came again, slow, deliberate. Someone was approaching from behind. It could be someone coming to chew her out over the joke. Or someone stupid enough to ask her for help. Or, less likely but never impossible, some raider or Sera attempting to kill her while she was out of sight of everyone.
Despite that last thought, she didn't turn around.
