    72 Pillars

    name: 72 Pillars
overview: The 72 Pillars are the 72 noble devil families that form the aristocratic backbone of Devil society. They are named after the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia. Each clan was founded by one of the original High-Class Devils created from Lilith's body by the original Lucifer. Of the original 72, only 32 active clans remain — 40 were wiped out during the Great War. Surviving clans hold dominion over their own territories in the Underworld and are divided into political tiers: Great King (highest), King, Duke, Marquis, Count, and others.
abilities: Each surviving clan possesses a unique innate power passed through their bloodline. Notable examples: Bael — Power of Destruction; Phenex — phoenix immortality and fire/wind; Gremory — inherited Destruction via marriage to the Bael line; Sitri — water and ice manipulation; Agares — time manipulation; Abaddon — the Hole ability (spatial voids); Flauros — fire; Vapula — lion taming. Clan members born without their family's signature power face severe social stigma within their own house.

    72 Pillars - Notes

political_structure: The 72 Pillars are split into competing factions. The Great King Faction (led by the Bael clan) represents conservative, pureblood-supremacist traditionalists who distrust the current Satan government. The current Four Great Satans — Sirzechs, Serafall, Ajuka, and Falbium — are all drawn from mid-to-lower Pillar families, which caused lasting tension with the upper nobility. The Bael clan's de-facto leader Zekram Bael holds more political weight than the Satans in many noble circles.
ranks_and_titles: Pillar families hold hereditary noble ranks: Great King (Bael, #1), King (Agares, #2), Prince (Sitri, #12), Duke (Gremory, #56), Marquis, Count, Earl. These ranks govern social standing, territory size, and political influence. The rank does not directly reflect combat power — Sairaorg Bael, for example, surpasses most Great King nobles in raw strength despite having no clan ability.
notable_clans: Bael (rank 1, Great King — Power of Destruction), Agares (rank 2 — time manipulation, territory hosts Agreas floating city), Sitri (rank 12 — water/ice, produced current Leviathan), Phenex (rank 37 — phoenix immortality), Gremory (rank 56, Duke — produced current Lucifer and one of his siblings), Belial (Diehauser the Rating Game Champion), Astaroth (Ajuka Beelzebub's family).
extinction_and_mixed_blood: Members of extinct clans still exist but carry diluted or mixed blood. Pure-bloods look down on them. Some extinct clans' bloodlines survive through reincarnated Devils who carry a trace of their original heritage, though they receive no social recognition from the noble hierarchy.

    Alliance of Hell

    name: Alliance of Hell
overview: The Alliance of Hell is a coalition of anti-Three-Factions deities assembled by Hades, God of the Realm of the Dead, as the primary antagonist force of the True DxD volumes. It represents Hades's long-held belief that beings such as Devils, Fallen Angels, and reincarnated creatures are unnatural abominations that should be destroyed. The alliance consists of Hades's Grim Reaper legions, the Artificial Transcendental Devils Balberith and Verrine, and the resurrected Evil God Angra Mainyu.
history: Hades spent centuries as an observer of supernatural conflicts, secretly aiding both the Hero Faction and the Old Satan Faction's remnants as proxies, never committing directly. After D×D dismantled the Khaos Brigade and sealed Trihexa, Hades finally moved openly, assembling an alliance intended to eliminate the Longinus users, the chief Gods of allied mythologies, and Ajuka Beelzebub specifically — the one remaining Satan whose power rivaled the original four.
abilities: Hades's personal power is among the top ten in the world. His divine aura overpowers even Reflect-level abilities. He wields a skeletal staff that amplifies his attacks. Angra Mainyu is a primordial Evil God of Zoroastrian mythology with the ability to create fake copies of Heavenly Dragons. Balberith and Verrine are Artificial Transcendental Devils created from Lilith's original lineage via the Holy Grail — beings whose power exceeds Satan-class without using Evil Pieces.

    Alliance of Hell - Notes

grim_reapers: The Grim Reapers serve as Hades's primary military force. They exist in multiple ranks — Low, Middle, High, and Ultimate class — and are functionally more powerful than equivalent-rank Devils. An Ultimate-class Grim Reaper such as Pluto operated at a level that could casually threaten the Heavenly Dragons. The Grim Reapers also possess the Thanatos faction, led by the rogue Grim Reaper Thanatos, who acts with more aggression than Hades officially sanctions.
balberith_and_verrine: Balberith and Verrine are Artificial Transcendental Devils — Super Devil-class beings born from Lilith's lineage rather than Evil Pieces. Balberith is copper-haired, and Verrine has jade-green hair. Balberith became unexpectedly influenced by the Oppai Dragon television program after joining the Alliance, developing a sense of values Hades never anticipated. Both eventually defect — Verrine is defeated by the Gremory group, and Balberith, having internalized Issei's philosophy through the show, ends up joining Xenovia Quarta's peerage.
defeat_and_aftermath: The Alliance is dismantled across multiple battles in the True Volumes. Hades himself is defeated by the combined assault of Issei, Vali, Sairaorg, Dulio, Vasco Strada, and Tobio Ikuse in underground London. Angra Mainyu is captured. The faction's philosophy — that Devils and reincarnated beings are aberrations — is directly refuted by D×D's existence.
note: The Alliance of Hell is distinct from the Khaos Brigade. Where the Khaos Brigade sought chaos or world conquest, Hades genuinely believes he is protecting the natural order of existence, making him arguably the series' most ideologically coherent major villain.

  3. #3AngelsDisabled

Keys: Biblical Angels, Heaven, Seraphs, Angels

    Disabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Angels

    name: Angels
overview: Angels are divine beings who serve the God of the Bible and represent the heavenly faction in the Three Factions conflict. They draw power from the faith of humanity — the more believers exist, the stronger Heaven's system operates. Following the God of the Bible's death in the Great War, the Angels were left without their creator and unable to produce new members through natural means. The revelation of God's death was suppressed for centuries to protect the faith-dependent power system. The Brave Saints system, created by Michael in cooperation with Azazel and Ajuka, restored the Angels' ability to grow their numbers by reincarnating worthy humans into Angels.
appearance: Angels have white feathered wings — the number of wings directly indicates their rank and power. Standard Angels have two wings. High-ranking Angels possess four or more. The Four Great Seraphs — Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel — each possess twelve wings. Angels also bear halos above their heads, which Fallen Angels lose upon their fall. Their bodies radiate holy light. Half-Angels (born between an Angel and a human) are referred to as Miracle Children.
personality: Angels embody purity and faith. Ironically, this creates naivety — Gabriel, considered the most beautiful woman in Heaven, is entirely unaware of erotic behavior and cannot recognize perverted intent even when it is aimed directly at her. Reincarnated Angels can be more worldly. Angels hold deep reverence for God's teachings, and even after his death, they continue to follow his values under Michael's stewardship.
abilities: All Angels can generate and weaponize holy light — the most common form being Light Spears, which are lethally corrosive to Devils and Fallen Angels. Angels can fly using their feathered wings. Certain elite Angels possess unique holy abilities: Baraqiel wields Holy Lightning, Uriel controls Holy Flame, and Michael governs Heaven's entire sacred system. Reincarnated Angels gain enhanced light powers based on the face value of their Brave Saints card.

    Angels - Notes

hierarchy: The Four Great Seraphs lead Heaven: Michael (former leader, now sealed with Trihexa), Gabriel (current leader, Guardian of the Throne), Raphael (Healer), and Uriel (Flame). Below them are Archangels, various ranks of standard Angels, and Reincarnated Angels from the Brave Saints system.
brave_saints: The Brave Saints system allows each Seraph to reincarnate up to 13 humans into their service using suit-based cards (Spades for Michael, Hearts for Gabriel, Clubs for Raphael, Diamonds for Uriel). The Joker cards are special trump pieces held outside the standard 13. Michael's Joker is Dulio Gesualdo, the world's strongest exorcist.
weakness: Angels suffer when exposed to demonic power or darkness, though less acutely than Devils suffer from holy energy. The faith-dependency of their power system is a structural vulnerability — declining human belief weakens Heaven. This is a primary reason why God's death was concealed for so long.
current_leadership: Following the sealing of Michael, Raphael, and Uriel inside the Isolation Barrier Field to contain Trihexa, Gabriel became Heaven's leader. She also assumed control of the sacred system that governs holy effects on Devils and the mechanics of prayer.

    Bael Clan

    name: Bael Clan
overview: The Bael Clan is the highest-ranking of the 72 Pillars, holding the title of Great King. They are considered the most powerful devil noble family in the Underworld and have historically been the de-facto political leaders of Devil society — even above the Four Great Satans in terms of conservative influence. The clan's signature ability is the Power of Destruction, a unique force capable of erasing matter, energy, and even souls from existence. The clan's first head, Zekram Bael, is a first-generation Devil who remains active and wields political influence surpassing the current Satans.
history: The Bael Clan was the most vocal opponent of the Khaos Brigade's radical approach and served as a stabilizing force during the Civil War. Ironically, it was Zekram Bael who recruited Sirzechs, Serafall, Ajuka, and Falbium into the Anti-Satan Faction — all from lower-ranked families — because he recognized their exceptional ability over bloodline. After the Civil War, the clan's political faction (the Great King Faction) became the primary conservative opposition to the current Satan government.
abilities: The Power of Destruction is innate to Bael bloodline members and can be inherited through intermarriage. It manifests as a dark crimson and black destructive aura that annihilates whatever it contacts without explosion or impact — it simply erases. Sirzechs Lucifer has mastered it to a degree that places him among the top-ten most powerful beings alive. Rias Gremory inherited it through her mother Venelana (nee Bael).

    Bael Clan - Notes

political_role: The Bael Clan leads the Great King Faction, which pushes for traditional pureblood supremacy, skepticism of the current Satan government, and opposition to progressive policies like Sona Sitri's open Rating Game school. However, Zekram himself is pragmatic — he supports merit over birthright in practice, as evidenced by his endorsement of Sairaorg despite his lack of Destruction, and treating reincarnated Devil Issei with enough respect to personally invite him to his castle and suggest he become a Satan.
sairaorg_situation: Sairaorg Bael, son of Lord Bael and his first wife Misla (nee Vapula), was born without the Power of Destruction. His father exiled him to the countryside. He was raised solely by Misla, who told him that those who lack talent must build strength through other means. Sairaorg developed extraordinary physical power through pure training, eventually defeated his half-brother Magdaran (who had the power), and reclaimed the heir position. His story became a symbol of meritocracy within a clan defined by birthright.
notable_members: Zekram Bael (first head, first-generation Devil), Lord Bael (current head), Sairaorg Bael (heir, strongest young Devil), Magdaran Bael (second son), Misla Bael (Sairaorg's mother, currently recovering from Devil sleeping sickness), Venelana Gremory (nee Bael, Rias's mother — carries the Power of Destruction gene into the Gremory line).
territory: The Bael territory is one of the most prestigious in the Underworld. Sairaorg's family was exiled to the rural outskirts of it during his childhood. Magdaran also cultivates rare purple flowers and premium apples within the territory — products Sairaorg helped bring to market.

    Brave Saints

    name: Brave Saints
overview: The Brave Saints is the Angel faction's reincarnation system, equivalent in function to the Devil's Evil Pieces. Created by Michael in cooperation with Azazel and Ajuka following the Three Factions Summit, it allows the Four Great Seraphs to reincarnate worthy humans as Angels and rebuild Heaven's depleted numbers. Each Seraph holds a full playing card deck of 13 cards (Ace through King), retaining the King card for themselves. The system is modeled after a standard card deck, with the 12 Apostles as conceptual inspiration for the 12 available reincarnation slots.
overview2: Suits correspond to each Seraph: Michael's suit is Spades, Gabriel's is Hearts, Raphael's is Clubs, and Uriel's is Diamonds. Higher-numbered cards confer greater ability enhancement to the reincarnated Angel. Joker cards exist outside the 13-card standard deck as special trump pieces for exceptional individuals.
abilities: Reincarnated Angels retain their base abilities and gain enhanced light powers calibrated to their card's face value. Unlike Devil Evil Pieces which grant specific combat traits (Rook strength, Knight speed, etc.), Brave Saint power scales directly with card rank — a King-class reincarnated Angel is dramatically stronger than an Ace. The Joker card exists outside this scale entirely.

    Brave Saints - Notes

notable_members: Irina Shidou — Michael's Ace of Spades, chosen for her faith, innocence, and ability to form genuine connections with beings of any faction. Dulio Gesualdo — Michael's Joker, considered the world's strongest exorcist and a Longinus user (Zenith Tempest). Griselda Quarta — Heart Suit Queen under Gabriel, former guardian of Xenovia and Irina. Lint Sellzen — Diamond Suit under Uriel, former student of Freed Sellzen's exorcist lineage.
difference_from_evil_pieces: Evil Pieces require a High-Class Devil to spend rare chess pieces that may cost multiple Pawns depending on the reincarnated being's power. Brave Saints operate on a fixed 13-card system per Seraph, meaning each Seraph has exactly 12 available slots for reincarnation at any time. There is no ability to trade Brave Saints cards between Seraphs.
post_sealing: After Michael, Raphael, and Uriel sealed themselves with Trihexa in the Isolation Barrier Field, their respective Brave Saints peerages remained in the world under Gabriel's overall leadership. The cards from sealed Seraphs are not reassigned — their reincarnated Angels continue operating under the values and guidance their Seraph instilled.

    The Church

    name: The Church
overview: The Church refers collectively to the human religious institution aligned with the Angels of Heaven — primarily the Catholic Church and its affiliated Protestant branches. In High School DxD, the Church serves as Heaven's earthly representative, maintaining human faith (which powers Heaven's system), managing the exorcism of rogue supernatural entities, and overseeing the wielders of holy swords. Church agents operate across the world, many unaware that God died in the Great War and that the institution is now effectively run by the Four Great Seraphs in God's name.
history: The Church's relationship with the supernatural world was defined for centuries by its anti-Devil, anti-Fallen Angel mandate. Church Exorcists were trained specifically to combat these creatures, and Holy Sword wielders were considered its most elite warriors. The institution ran morally questionable programs — most notably the Holy Sword Project, which gathered children, subjected them to procedures to bond them with Excalibur, and killed those who failed to adapt. The formation of the Three Factions Alliance destabilized the Church's ideological foundation: if Devils and Fallen Angels are now allies, who is the enemy?
abilities: Church agents are trained exorcists skilled with holy weapons, light-based artifacts, and various barrier and purification techniques. Elite agents are granted Holy Element — a factor that allows them to wield Holy Swords. Natural Holy Sword wielders (those born with high Holy Element) are extremely rare and appear approximately once per decade.

    The Church - Notes

holy_sword_project: A classified program run by Cardinal Valper Galilei that attempted to artificially create Holy Sword wielders by extracting and concentrating Holy Element from children. Children who failed to adapt were killed. Survivors included Yuuto Kiba, who escaped near-death and later became Rias Gremory's Knight. The program was ultimately condemned even within the Church, but Valper continued it covertly. He was killed by Kiba during the Excalibur arc.
excommunication: The Church's rigid ideology led to the excommunication of Asia Argento — a devout nun expelled for using her Sacred Gear (Twilight Healing) to heal a Devil. She was later discovered to have been manipulated into her situation by Diodora Astaroth. Xenovia Quarta was also excommunicated after learning of God's death during Kokabiel's attack. Both eventually became Devils under Rias Gremory's peerage.
church_rebellion_arc: After the Three Factions Alliance was established, a significant portion of Church warriors — led by Cardinals Vasco Strada, Ewald Cristaldi, and Teodoro Legrenzi — rebelled against Michael's authority. Their grievance: decades of training, sacrifice, and identity built around fighting Devils and Fallen Angels had been rendered meaningless by the peace treaty. D×D accepted their formal challenge and fought them in Kuoh Town. Strada's hidden purpose was not victory but acknowledgment — he wanted his warriors to feel their beliefs had been met with genuine respect before they found new purpose.
vasco_strada: Vasco Strada is the most powerful Church warrior in history — an over-80-year-old former Durandal wielder who fought Kokabiel to a standstill during World War II. He twice refused the Ace position offered by the Seraphs. Despite leading the rebellion, he later joined Rias Gremory's Rating Game team as her most powerful member. He represents the ideal of a warrior whose power comes entirely from a lifetime of sincere effort.
post_rebellion: Following the Church Rebellion, the warriors were integrated into a broader world role. Vasco Strada acknowledged that their era of holy war was ending and encouraged his warriors to find new paths. The Church's relationship with D×D normalized, with figures like Irina Shidou serving as ambassadors between Heaven and the supernatural alliance.

    Devil Class System

    name: Devil Class System
overview: Devil society is structured around a rigid class hierarchy that determines political rights, territory ownership, and social standing. Class advancement is based on accumulated contract work (granting wishes for humans), Rating Game performance, and distinguished battle service. The system applies to both Pure-Blooded and Reincarnated Devils, though Pure-Blood nobility begins at a higher default standing.
abilities: Class directly governs what abilities and privileges a Devil may access: Low and Middle class Devils cannot own territory or have peerages. High-Class Devils receive Evil Pieces, their own territory, and can participate in official Rating Games. Ultimate-Class Devils are considered among the most powerful individuals in the Underworld. Super Devils transcend the normal classification system entirely.

    Devil Class System - Notes

low_class: Low-Class Devils form the majority of the Devil population. They perform basic Devil's Job contracts, carry summoning leaflets, and fulfill minor wishes for humans in exchange for payment. Issei Hyoudou began at this level despite being a Pawn of a High-Class Devil's peerage.
middle_class: Middle-Class Devils have greater raw power and more contract options. They can take on more complex and dangerous wishes. Issei, Kiba, and Akeno passed the Middle-Class promotion test in Volume 12.
high_class: High-Class Devils receive their own set of Evil Pieces (15 chess pieces), a territory in the Underworld, and the right to participate in Rating Games. This is the threshold at which a Devil becomes a true social player. Promotion requires passing both a written theory exam and a practical combat examination. Issei achieved High-Class Devil status in Volume 22.
ultimate_class: Ultimate-Class Devils are rare individuals of enormous power — the top echelon of Devil combat ability. The current Satans, Tannin, Grayfia, and Roygun Belphegor operate at this level. Being an Ultimate-Class Devil places someone among the top tiers globally, not just within Devil society.
super_devil: Super Devils are beings whose power exceeds even the Ultimate-Class ceiling, making the normal class system inapplicable to them. Sirzechs Lucifer, Ajuka Beelzebub, and the deceased Rizevim Livan Lucifer were the original three. Following the Hell Disaster, Issei Hyoudou and Vali Lucifer were officially certified as Super Devils, creating the new rank of Special-Class Devil to acknowledge their position.
mid_class_exam: The formal promotion exam to Middle-Class is held at a designated examination facility. It consists of a written theory portion and a practical combat test. A reincarnated Devil's raw power at exam time may far exceed the exam's design — Issei accidentally destroyed the test venue with a single punch, having calibrated himself against Gods rather than Middle-Class opponents.

    Devils

    name: Devils
overview: Devils are one of the three main supernatural races in High School DxD, alongside Angels and Fallen Angels. They originated in the Underworld, created by the original Lucifer using the body of his wife Lilith to build a military force. Devil society is a complex aristocracy of noble clans (the 72 Pillars) and their servants, operating on a system of territory, contracts, and political power. The total lifespan of a Devil is approximately 10,000 years, making them effectively immortal by human standards. The Devil race was nearly destroyed in the Great War against Angels and Fallen Angels, which killed the original Four Great Satans and reduced the 72 Pillars to 32 active clans.
appearance: Devils have humanoid forms with black bat-like wings that retract into their backs. High-ranking Pure-Blood Devils are indistinguishable from humans when their wings are hidden. Reincarnated Devils retain their original appearance but gain wings upon reincarnation. The color, size, and spread of wings can reflect power level, though this is not a universal rule.
abilities: All Devils can generate Demonic Power — a magical energy unique to their race used to cast spells, create phenomena, and power their signature abilities. Devils can fly, enhance their physical attributes, teleport via magic circles, and communicate in any human language through a passive ability called Language. Demonic Power is highly individual — each Devil's power is shaped by their bloodline and personality.

    Devils - Notes

weaknesses: Devils are vulnerable to holy power, blessed objects (crucifixes, holy water, the Bible), and Holy Swords. Contact with genuinely holy items causes physical pain and can be lethal at sufficient intensity. This vulnerability is caused by the God of the Bible's sacred system, which is now maintained by Gabriel. Asia Argento's Twilight Healing is a rare exception — its sacred gear classification overrides the standard Holy-Devil antagonism.
devil_society: Devil society is governed by the four current Satans and operates through the 72 Pillar noble families, who hold territory and political power. Advancement is available through Devil's Job contracts, Rating Games, and battle service. Devils summon human clients through leaflets left in mailboxes — humans who pick them up can summon a Devil to grant wishes in exchange for payment or favors.
devil_civil_war: After the Great War, the surviving Pure-Blood descendants of the original Satans attempted to continue the war. This sparked a Devil Civil War between the Old Satan Faction (supporting world domination) and the Anti-Satan Faction (opposing it). The Anti-Satan Faction won, and a new government was established with elected Satans. The current Satans — Sirzechs, Serafall, Ajuka, Falbium — all rose from lower-ranking families through demonstrated ability rather than birth.
devil_jobs: Devil's Job is the contractual work system through which Devils earn social standing. Each High-Class Devil is assigned a territory in the human world. Their servants insert summoning leaflets into mailboxes, and interested humans summon them to make contracts. Payment can be money, objects, or portions of life energy. Successful contracts accumulate toward class advancement and the eventual ability to establish a personal peerage.

    Dragon Kings

    name: Dragon Kings
overview: The Dragon Kings are the five most powerful dragons in existence below the Heavenly Dragons (Ddraig and Albion) and the Dragon Gods (Ophis and Great Red). Each commands a unique domain of power and is feared across all mythologies. They are not affiliated with any single faction but maintain relationships with various parties. All five eventually become allied with Team D×D in some capacity.
abilities: Dragon Kings operate at a power level that generally surpasses Ultimate-Class Devils in raw combat. Their specific abilities vary: Fafnir uses a golden aura that can negate other powers; Tiamat uses immense draconic force and is considered the single most powerful Dragon King; Vritra's Prison abilities seal and drain power; Midgardsormr is a titanic serpent with massive physical force; Yu-Long is a Chinese-style dragon with arrogant battle instincts and fire breath.

    Dragon Kings - Notes

fafnir: Fafnir — the Gold Dragon King. Sealed in Azazel's Down Fall Dragon Spear Artificial Sacred Gear for decades before forming a contract with Asia Argento. His obsession with women's underwear is legendary and has embarrassed Asia countless times. Despite his comedic fixation, he enters an Outrage state of near-Heavenly Dragon power when Asia is threatened — this rage allowed him to deal serious damage to Rizevim Livan Lucifer during the Heaven battle, ultimately delivering the killing blow that ended Rizevim's life.
tiamat: Tiamat — the Dragon Queen, considered the strongest of the five Dragon Kings. She holds an ancient grudge against Ddraig, who borrowed her treasures before being sealed and subsequently lost them to human thieves. She serves as the Underworld's secret Rating Game administrator, intervening when illegal situations arise mid-match. She cannot participate in tournaments like the Azazel Cup due to this role.
vritra: Vritra — the Prison Dragon. His power was sealed across four separate Sacred Gears (Absorption Line, Blaze Black Flare, Delete Field, Shadow Prison), all implanted into Genshirou Saji by the Grigori. Saji can awaken Vritra's dragon consciousness and transform into a massive fire dragon, channeling all four abilities simultaneously.
midgardsormr: Midgardsormr — the World Serpent of Norse mythology. In the Azazel Cup, Midgardsormr holds five Pawn pieces in Typhon's team and appears to sleep through every match — his raw size and presence alone acting as a deterrent.
yu_long: Yu-Long — the Mischievous Dragon, the arrogant son of the Eastern Dragon God. He is allied with Sun Wukong's Journey to the West team. He considers himself far more important than he is treated by Sun Wukong, and is generally insufferable to everyone around him.

    Evie Etoulde

    name: Evie Etoulde
overview: Evie Etoulde is a parallel world that exists beyond the Dimensional Gap — the existence of which was hinted at by the Chichigami fairy during the Loki battle and later confirmed by Rizevim Livan Lucifer, who made invading it his primary goal. It is inhabited by technologically advanced machine-based life-forms whose civilization and power vastly exceed anything in the series' known world. The world's existence is the driving threat of the Shin DxD era.
history: Rizevim attempted to use Trihexa to destroy Great Red and open the Dimensional Gap for an Evie invasion force. This plan failed. However, the butterfly effect of Gasper Vladi's future-self transmitting information backward through time caused the Evie arrival to occur 30 years ahead of schedule — eliminating the preparation window Azazel had built his long-term plans around.
abilities: Evie entities do not possess aura, magical power, or Touki in any form detectable by supernatural beings — making them categorically invisible to standard supernatural threat-sensing. Their physical constructs use unknown barrier technology that deflects both magic and physical attacks. Their combat units regenerate indefinitely as long as their creator-class entity remains active.

    Evie Etoulde - Notes

regalzeva: Invincible Devastator Regalzeva is the faction leader of the Evie military currently deployed to Earth (designated 'Draconic Deus' by Evie). He killed Great Red — the most powerful dragon in existence — as a warm-up exercise. He commands tens of thousands of Evie soldier units and two Sky and Sea Prime rulers. He is the primary antagonist of the Shin DxD final arc.
melvazoa: Malevolent God Melvazoa is Regalzeva's sibling and leads a separate Evie faction with its own agenda. His second-in-command Haz Ilyus was embedded in Regalzeva's force as an intelligence operative with the goal of preserving the planet long enough for Melvazoa's main force to arrive — believing Regalzeva's recklessness will destroy the planet's value before it can be properly used.
kanzaki_mitsuya: Kanzaki Mitsuya is a human from the Evie timeline who arrived in the series' present with foreknowledge of the invasion. He possesses both Innovate Clear (a Longinus that generates ideal worlds) and Telos Karma (the History Breaker — a Longinus that forces impossible outcomes into existence). Ajuka Beelzebub cannot reliably predict what happens when Telos Karma interacts with Issei Hyoudou's miracle-generating nature, making the combination incalculable.
gvardora: Gvardora is an Evie combat unit of the elliptical body type — a construct that appears as a fluorescent green oval. It is capable of learning and adapting combat patterns faster than any supernatural opponent encountered previously. It defeated Vali's team and abducted Hades and Angra Mainyu after the Alliance of Hell's defeat, demonstrating that even post-war D×D is outclassed by front-line Evie units.

    Extra Demons

    name: Extra Demons
overview: The Extra Demons are high-ranking Devil noble families that exist outside the 72 Pillars hierarchy but hold equal or greater prestige than many Pillar clans. They are ancient families whose origins predate or parallel the 72 Pillars structure, often with unique abilities or histories distinct from the standard Pillar framework. Extra Demon families include the Lucifuge — who served the original Lucifer as his personal household — and the Mephisto Pheles lineage, whose founder was the legendary Magician who made pacts with humans across history.
abilities: Extra Demon abilities vary by family. The Lucifuge clan specialized in demonic power that replicated and amplified the abilities of the original Lucifer — Euclid Lucifuge can copy demonic powers he has witnessed, including a partial replication of the Power of Destruction. Mephisto Pheles is a master Magician with centuries of accumulated knowledge.

    Extra Demons - Notes

lucifuge_clan: The Lucifuge Clan served as the personal household of the original Lucifer and were considered among the most elite non-Pillar noble families. Following the Devil Civil War, most of the clan sided with the old government. Lord Lucifuge requested on his deathbed that Sirzechs destroy the House of Lucifuge, knowing his son Euclid would become a threat. Grayfia Lucifuge — the Strongest Queen and Sirzechs's wife — is the most prominent member. Her younger brother Euclid became the head of the Qlippoth's Magician Faction Nilrem.
mephisto_pheles: Mephisto Pheles is one of the oldest active Devils in the series — a contemporary of the original Satans who left the Underworld government because he found the old regime intolerable. He has spent centuries in the human world as the legendary figure who made pacts with the historical scholar Faust. He chairs the Magicians' Association and is the King of Tannin's peerage — making the former Dragon King his Queen piece servant. He coordinates the magician contract system that floods Issei's peerage with application documents in Volume 14.
role_in_story: Extra Demons occupy a specific political niche: they are old enough and powerful enough to act independently of both the current Satan government and the 72 Pillar factions, giving them freedom to pursue their own agendas. Mephisto generally pursues research and business; Euclid pursues revenge and ideology. Both are among the most consequential non-Pillar Devils in the series.

    Fallen Angels

    name: Fallen Angels
overview: Fallen Angels are Angels who were cast out of Heaven after succumbing to desires that conflicted with God's teachings — primarily lust, as the original Fallen Angels were tempted by human women. They retain their light-based powers and wings but their wings turn black and they lose their halos. They are the smallest faction among the Three Factions. Unlike Angels and Devils, they have no formal reincarnation system, making their numbers a slow and steady decline that Azazel acknowledged before sealing himself: the Fallen Angels may end with him.
appearance: Fallen Angels are outwardly similar to Angels — humanoid, with feathered wings. Their defining visual difference is the jet-black color of their wings. Wing count still indicates power level. Azazel's twelve perfectly black wings are described as having the color of everlasting darkness. Female Fallen Angels are noted for unnaturally seductive physiques — a trait that carries over to half-Fallen Angels like Akeno Himejima.
abilities: Fallen Angels retain full light-based combat abilities including Light Spears, Light Swords, and various light-infused constructs. Their light is technically tainted compared to angelic light but is functionally identical in battle. Special abilities exist among elite Fallen Angels: Azazel wields the Down Fall Dragon Spear (with Fafnir sealed inside), Baraqiel wields Holy Lightning, and Kokabiel generates light weapons of enormous scale.
personality: Fallen Angels occupy an awkward middle position — cast out of Heaven but generally not demonic in nature. Many chose exile over warfare and built the Grigori as a neutral research and welfare organization. Azazel's decades-long goal of coexistence with the other factions reflects this — he sees the Fallen Angels as beings who made mistakes and moved on, not as enemies of Heaven.

    Fallen Angels - Notes

how_falling_occurs: An Angel becomes a Fallen Angel when they harbor feelings or commit acts that violate Heaven's purity code. Lust is the most common trigger, but any 'impure thought' can cause the fall. The process is irreversible — once an Angel falls, their wings permanently turn black. Reincarnated Angels can approach the fallen state without completing it: Irina Shidou's wings flickered black-and-white multiple times when she experienced erotic thoughts about Issei, requiring prayer to stabilize herself. Mutual true love expressed within a specially crafted purification barrier is the only sexual act Angels can perform without falling.
half_fallen_angels: Half-Fallen Angels are born from unions between Fallen Angels and humans. They possess both human sacred gear potential and Fallen Angel light abilities. Akeno Himejima is the most prominent example — daughter of Baraqiel (a Fallen Angel Cadre) and Shuri Himejima (a human miko). She spent years refusing to use her Fallen Angel powers before reconciling with her heritage. Her Holy Lightning combines her Fallen Angel light with Senjutsu ki absorbed from Issei, creating a uniquely powerful hybrid ability.
current_status: Following the Evil Dragon War, Azazel sealed himself in the Isolation Barrier Field with Trihexa. Shemhazai became Governor-General of Grigori with Baraqiel as Vice-Governor-General. The Fallen Angels contribute primarily through Grigori's research and technology capabilities rather than military numbers.

    Five Principal Clans

    name: Five Principal Clans
overview: The Five Principal Clans are Japan's most powerful supernatural exorcist families, each specializing in a distinct combat and spiritual tradition. They operate outside the Three Factions structure as independent Japanese supernatural entities, though they cooperate with D×D during crises. Unlike Devil noble families who use Evil Pieces and magical reincarnation, the Five Clans train through generations of inherited technique and spiritual refinement.
history: The Five Clans have roots in Japan's indigenous spiritual traditions — Shinto, Buddhism, and various esoteric Japanese martial arts. They have coexisted with Youkai factions and occasionally clashed with Devils and Fallen Angels operating in Japan. The Himejima Clan's expulsion of Akeno — the daughter of Shuri Himejima and the Fallen Angel Baraqiel — exemplifies the isolationist, purity-focused attitude many of the clans historically held toward supernatural mixing.
abilities: Each clan specializes in a different power tradition: Himejima — Shinto purification and spiritual combat; Nakiri — a sacred beast and inherited power system; Toudo — sword arts; Doumon — barrier and sealing techniques; Kushihashi — physical combat arts. All five combine these techniques with ki manipulation.

    Five Principal Clans - Notes

himejima_clan: The Himejima Clan are Shinto exorcists specializing in spiritual purification. Their current head, Suzaku Himejima, is a member of D×D. The clan's most infamous moment was the expulsion and near-execution of young Akeno after her mother Shuri was killed by clan members who could not accept Shuri's relationship with the Fallen Angel Baraqiel. This represents the clan's historical extreme rejection of supernatural mixing. The situation was resolved when Rias Gremory intervened at age twelve to protect Akeno.
nakiri_clan: The Nakiri Clan is one of the Five Principal Clans with a tradition of inheriting a sacred beast. Ouryuu Nakiri is the current bearer — a first-year student at Kuoh Academy who joins Issei's team in the Azazel Cup. He can transform into a humanoid golden dragon form and has exceptional Touki output. His cousin Ryuuta Nakiri lost the sacred beast position after causing trouble, and Ouryuu inherited the role. He carries the weight of his family's expectations while attempting to choose his own path.
political_tension: The Five Clans have historically maintained distance from the Three Factions, viewing Devils and Fallen Angels with suspicion. The Himejima Clan's treatment of Akeno is the most extreme example of this. Following D×D's formation and the increasing threat of global supernatural crises, individual clan members began cooperating more openly. Suzaku Himejima's D×D membership represents a significant shift in the Himejima Clan's position.

    Gremory Clan

    name: Gremory Clan
overview: The Gremory Clan is one of the 72 Pillars of Devil nobility, ranked 56th and holding the title of Duke. Despite their relatively low numerical ranking, the Gremory Clan are among the most famous and beloved noble families in the Underworld — their deep affection for their servants, their history of producing Satan-class individuals, and their warm, egalitarian treatment of reincarnated Devils has made them popular figures across all social classes. The clan's territory is one of the most prosperous in the Underworld.
history: The Gremory Clan rose to prominence through the extraordinary talent of their children. Sirzechs Gremory — before taking the title of Lucifer — was a central figure in the Anti-Satan Civil War. His decision to join the rebellion despite being from a moderately-ranked family was a turning point. Zekram Bael personally recruited him because his power and character made him worth backing. After the Civil War, Sirzechs became one of the Four Great Satans, elevating the Gremory name to a position of influence far beyond their formal rank.
personality: The Gremory family is defined by its capacity for genuine affection — they love their servants and family members unconditionally and are fiercely protective of both. Rias Gremory's reincarnation of Issei, her protection of Koneko, her personal appearance at Kiba's crisis — these all reflect values instilled in her by parents who genuinely care about the people in their household. Venelana Gremory manages the family with warmth and sharp intelligence; Zeoticus is openly emotional and enthusiastic, often reducing himself to tears of joy over his children's accomplishments.
abilities: The Gremory Clan's signature power is inherited through their bloodline's intermarriage with the Bael Clan. Venelana Gremory (nee Bael) passed the Power of Destruction to both her children. Sirzechs Lucifer mastered it to Super Devil level. Rias has developed it further and combined it with dragon energy absorbed through Issei, creating her Extinguished Star technique.

    Gremory Clan - Notes

territory: The Gremory territory is described as beautiful and thriving. The family castle is enormous, staffed, and fully operational. During Issei's visit in Volume 5, the sheer scale of the castle caused Gasper to have a breakdown because his assigned room was too large. The Gremory family also employs Gomorin — a mascot character in a round green costume — as their territorial ambassador. Lord Zeoticus often wears the Gomorin costume himself.
notable_members: Sirzechs Lucifer — current Lucifer Satan, considered one of the most powerful Devils alive, now sealed in the Isolation Barrier Field. Rias Gremory — heiress, leader of the Occult Research Club peerage, engaged to Issei Hyoudou. Venelana Gremory (nee Bael) — family matriarch, carries the Power of Destruction gene. Zeoticus Gremory — family patriarch, master chef, overwhelmingly proud father. Millicas Gremory — son of Sirzechs and Grayfia, next-in-line after Rias, already showing exceptional power at a young age.
gremory_peerage: Rias's peerage is a central institution of the series. Members: Akeno Himejima (Queen), Yuuto Kiba (Knight), Koneko Toujou (Rook), Asia Argento (Bishop), Gasper Vladi (Bishop), Xenovia Quarta (Knight), Rossweisse (Rook), Issei Hyoudou (Pawn — all 8 Pawns spent on him). Following Rias's graduation, Crom Cruach joined her Azazel Cup team, making it arguably the most dangerous Rating Game roster outside Issei's own team.
cleria_belial_incident: The Gremory Clan's territory was previously managed by Cleria Belial, Diehauser Belial's cousin. She fell in love with the Church agent Yaegaki — a cross-faction relationship deemed intolerable by both the Great King Faction and the Church. Both factions orchestrated a joint secret operation to eliminate them both. Sirzechs knew this history and chose not to tell Rias, protecting her from a burden he could not fix. This incident directly motivated Diehauser's cooperation with Rizevim in Volume 20.

    Grigori

    name: Grigori
overview: Grigori is the central organization of the Fallen Angels, founded by Azazel after the Great War. Their full title is The Watchers of the Children of God — a reference to their primary mandate: locating, protecting, and training Sacred Gear possessors. Grigori operates as a combination of military organization, research institution, and welfare program for Sacred Gear users who have nowhere else to go. It is widely considered the most advanced research organization in the supernatural world.
history: Grigori was established in the aftermath of the Great War when Azazel chose research and understanding over continued conflict. While Angels and Devils rebuilt their societies, Azazel focused on studying Sacred Gears — items he recognized as the most unpredictable variable in the supernatural balance. Over centuries, Grigori developed Artificial Sacred Gears, modification surgery to implant multiple gears, and a comprehensive archive of all known Sacred Gears and Longinus.
abilities: Grigori's strength lies not in raw military numbers but in technology. Their Artificial Sacred Gears, modification surgeries, barrier research, and intelligence capabilities give them capabilities other factions cannot match. They also operate businesses in the Underworld entertainment industry and run the Nephilim school for Sacred Gear users.

    Grigori - Notes

leadership: Azazel served as Governor-General from Grigori's founding until Volume 12. Shemhazai — his most trusted right-hand man and the organization's day-to-day administrator — became Governor-General when Azazel stepped down to oversee Kuoh Town and Sacred Gear research directly. Baraqiel, previously a field Cadre, became Vice-Governor-General. After Azazel sealed himself in the Isolation Barrier Field in Volume 21, Shemhazai and Baraqiel continue leading the organization.
research_achievements: Grigori's most significant research outputs: Artificial Sacred Gears (devices replicating genuine gear properties), the Down Fall Dragon Spear (sealing Fafnir), the modification surgery given to Saji consolidating four Vritra Sacred Gears, the anti-Longinus suppression ring used against Alphecca Tyrant, the Eros Engine concept for stabilizing AxA power, and the UFO prank device Azazel used on Issei (which inadvertently provided Hades with data to construct Alphecca Tyrant's permanent effect).
cadres: Grigori's most powerful members are its Cadre — senior Fallen Angels with at least five pairs of wings. Known Cadres: Azazel (12 wings, Governor-General), Shemhazai, Baraqiel (10 wings, lightning), Kokabiel (10 wings, defected and imprisoned in Cocytus), Armaros (anti-magic specialist with axe and shield), Sahariel (experiments enthusiast, equipped Gasper's box with missile launchers).
population_concern: Grigori has the smallest population of the Three Factions. Azazel's final statement before sealing himself was that the Fallen Angels may end with him — the organization no longer has the numbers to sustain itself through normal attrition. Their continued relevance depends entirely on the quality of their remaining members and their technology advantage.

    Hero Faction

    name: Hero Faction
overview: The Hero Faction was the most tactically dangerous sub-group within the Khaos Brigade, operating independently from the Old Satan Faction's brute-force approach. Its members were humans — descendants or spiritual inheritors of legendary historical and mythological heroes — who used Sacred Gears as their primary weapons. Led by Cao Cao, descendant of the historical Three Kingdoms warlord and wielder of the True Longinus, the Hero Faction's goal was to demonstrate the superiority of humans with Sacred Gears over the supernatural world's native powers.
history: The Hero Faction operated covertly for much of the series, gathering data on D×D and all three major factions by infiltrating their territories in black uniforms. Their first major operation was the Kyoto incident — kidnapping Yasaka to summon a sun deity using her nine-tailed fox power. Their second major operation was the Three Factions Summit attack in Volume 4, using Gasper's power. Their most aggressive operation was poisoning Vali with Samael's curse in Volume 11 and stealing Ophis's power.
abilities: Hero Faction members combine Sacred Gear mastery with their inherited hero abilities. Most of them trained under historical combat traditions — Cao Cao under ancient Chinese strategy, Siegfried under European sword arts, Jeanne under Maid of Orleans-style holy sword techniques, and Heracles under brute physical supremacy.

    Hero Faction - Notes

members: Cao Cao — leader, True Longinus wielder, seven-orb Balance Breaker Polar Night Longinus Chakravartin. Georg — sub-leader, Dimension Lost Longinus, master magician. Siegfried — master swordsman, five demon swords plus the Dragon Arm, killed by Yuuto Kiba. Jeanne — Blade Blacksmith Sacred Gear, cheerful personality, now working as a Vatican cook. Heracles — Variant Detonation Sacred Gear, reformed after child care duty, rejoined battle on D×D's side. Leonardo — Annihilation Maker Longinus, quiet boy, currently studying under historical magicians in the Realm of the Dead.
indra_connection: Unknown to the other factions, Indra was secretly aware of the Hero Faction's activities and their Longinus holdings. He allowed them to operate and eventually stripped them of their Sacred Gears after Volume 12 when their usefulness expired, sending most members to the Realm of the Dead. Cao Cao alone continued operating as Indra's vanguard after Sun Wukong stepped down from the role.
dissolution: The Hero Faction effectively disbanded after the Demonic Beast Riot. Most members were sent to the Realm of the Dead where Georg and Leonardo continued their research. Jeanne returned to the Vatican for rehabilitation through cooking. Heracles was assigned to care for Devil children, where he reformed into a genuine protector figure. Cao Cao became Indra's independent agent and eventually allied with D×D against the Qlippoth and Alliance of Hell.
ideology: The Hero Faction believed humans with Sacred Gears represented the next stage of humanity's relationship with the supernatural — tools meant to surpass the divine, demonic, and other races. Cao Cao was the most ideologically committed to this, viewing himself as chosen by fate. His defeat by Issei in Volume 12 and the True Longinus's refusal to activate Truth Idea for him fundamentally shattered this worldview, forcing him into a long period of personal recalibration.

    Himejima Clan

    name: Himejima Clan
overview: The Himejima Clan is one of Japan's Five Principal Clans — elite supernatural exorcist families that have protected Japan from rogue supernatural entities for generations. The Himejima specialize in Shinto purification arts and spiritual combat, combining ki manipulation with traditional Japanese spiritual techniques. The clan has historically maintained strict isolation from other supernatural factions and has been deeply hostile toward Devil and Fallen Angel influence on Japanese spiritual traditions.
history: The clan's darkest chapter was their treatment of Shuri Himejima, a skilled miko who fell in love with and married the Fallen Angel Baraqiel. When her husband was called away by Azazel on a mission, members of the Himejima Clan — led by the then-patriarch Suou Himejima — attacked the household. Shuri died protecting her young daughter Akeno. The clan then pursued Akeno herself, intending to kill her for being a half-Fallen Angel hybrid. Rias Gremory intervened at age twelve, brokering an arrangement: Akeno would carry no official Himejima heritage, and the clan would not pursue her.
abilities: Himejima techniques center on Shinto purification and spiritual combat — effective against creatures of darkness and evil spirits. Their arts complement Senjutsu but are distinct from it. The clan also produces users of spiritual barrier techniques.

    Himejima Clan - Notes

suzaku_himejima: Suzaku Himejima is the current head of the Himejima Clan and a member of Team D×D. Unlike previous clan leadership, Suzaku represents a more open approach to cooperation with the supernatural alliance. The reconciliation between the clan and Akeno — achieved through Issei's mediation and Baraqiel's willingness to reconnect with his daughter — is reflected in Suzaku's willingness to work alongside Grigori and the Three Factions.
akeno_and_the_clan: Akeno's expulsion and near-execution by the Himejima Clan is a defining trauma in her backstory. She spent years afterward refusing to use her Fallen Angel abilities — the same abilities that caused her mother's death and her own exile. Her eventual reconciliation with her father Baraqiel (fully realized during the Loki battle in Volume 7) extended to a cautious rapprochement with the clan. She formally adopted the name Himejima Akeno alongside her father's name after the Loki arc.
shuri_himejima: Shuri Himejima was a miko of exceptional skill who represents the cost of the clan's intolerance. She died protecting Akeno from her own family. Her memory permeates much of the Himejima backstory arc. Azazel, who called Baraqiel away on the day of the attack, carries personal guilt over her death — he acknowledged to Issei that he was responsible for the chain of events that led to it.

    Khaos Brigade

    name: Khaos Brigade
overview: The Khaos Brigade — also known as the Army of Disaster — was the primary antagonist terrorist organization of High School DxD across arcs one through four (Volumes 4–20). It was a coalition of beings from multiple factions united by dissatisfaction with the growing Three Factions Alliance. Its nominal leader was Ophis, the Dragon God of Infinity — though Ophis's sole personal goal was to drive Great Red from the Dimensional Gap, not to pursue the organization's various sub-agendas. The Brigade was never a unified force but rather a collection of factions operating under the same banner for their own distinct purposes.
history: The Khaos Brigade formed in response to the Three Factions Summit and the peace treaty between Angels, Devils, and Fallen Angels. Various groups opposed to this alliance — the Old Satan descendants, disaffected human Sacred Gear users, Vali's independent team, and eventually Rizevim's Qlippoth — gathered under Ophis's name for the protection and resources her power provided. The organization splintered multiple times as sub-factions pursued conflicting goals.
abilities: The Brigade's greatest asset was diversity — it contained Longinus possessors, Satan descendants, Balance Breaker users from every faction, Youkai, and rogue mythological entities. No single member configuration represented the whole. At peak strength it was considered the equal of any single major faction.

    Khaos Brigade - Notes

old_satan_faction: The largest sub-faction. Led by Katerea Leviathan, Creuserey Asmodeus, and Shalba Beelzebub — descendants of the original Four Great Satans seeking to restore devil world domination. Dismantled across Volumes 4–12 as each leader was killed. The remnants were defeated in Volume 12 by Ajuka Beelzebub.
hero_faction: Humans descended from legendary heroes, led by Cao Cao (True Longinus). The most tactically dangerous sub-group. Secretly allied with Hades. Operated by gathering intelligence on all factions before striking. Effectively disbanded after the Demonic Beast Riot in Volume 12.
vali_team: Vali Lucifer's independent squad — loosely affiliated with the Brigade for access and resources while pursuing their own agenda of fighting strong opponents and investigating Rizevim. Went rogue in Volume 11 and officially departed. Became D×D allies from Volume 12 onward.
qlippoth: Rizevim Livan Lucifer's splinter organization, which replaced the larger Brigade as the central threat from Volumes 16–21. Focus: reviving Trihexa (666), converting vampires into Evil Dragons, and invading the parallel world Evie Etoulde through the Dimensional Gap. Destroyed after Rizevim's death at Fafnir's hands.
hidden_khaos_brigade: Remnants of all dissolved sub-factions who continue operating as a dormant terrorist network. They supplied logistics to attackers in Volume 14 and disrupted the Auros Academy event. Their exact composition and leadership remain unclear even after the main organization's collapse.
dissolution: The Khaos Brigade effectively ended after Qlippoth was dismantled in Volume 21 — following Rizevim's death, Trihexa's sealing, and the defeats of Apophis and Azi Dahaka in the Dimensional Gap.

    Magicians

    name: Magicians
overview: Magicians are humans who wield magic — a power derived from research, study, and spiritual attunement rather than being born with Sacred Gears or supernatural heritage. Most modern magician traditions descend from the work of Merlin Ambrosius, who developed human magic by studying and adapting Demonic Power. Magicians form their own organizations independent of the Three Factions and often act as contractors, researchers, or agents working across faction lines. The Magicians' Association is the largest governing body for organized magic users worldwide.
history: Human magic has existed since antiquity, developing from observation of divine, demonic, and elemental forces. Merlin Ambrosius codified much of the modern tradition. The Golden Dawn organization (Order of the Golden Dawn) represents one of the most historically significant magician groups — founded by MacGregor Mathers, who is also Sirzechs Lucifer's Bishop in his peerage, the organization compiled the 72 Pillars grimoire and documented much of Devil society's structure for human scholars.
abilities: Magicians can use a broad range of magical effects: elemental attacks, barriers, teleportation, summoning, healing, illusions, information gathering, curse work, and specialized systems like Norse runes or security-system magic. Unlike Sacred Gear powers which are inherent, magic is entirely learned and expanded through study and practice.

    Magicians - Notes

magicians_association: The Magicians' Association is chaired by Mephisto Pheles, an Extra Demon who has lived among human magicians for centuries and finds the academic environment more interesting than Underworld politics. He coordinates contracts between magicians and Devil peerages, managing a global network of independent practitioners. In Volume 14, he sends an enormous cascade of magician application documents to Issei's newly elevated peerage.
nilrem: Nilrem is the Magician Faction within the Qlippoth, led by Euclid Lucifuge. It consists of stray magicians, Khaos Brigade remnants, and rogue practitioners willing to work with the Qlippoth for power or access to the Sephiroth Graal's research. Nilrem was responsible for multiple attacks on Kuoh Academy in Volume 14 and the kidnapping of Koneko, Gasper, and Ravel.
le_fay_pendragon: Le Fay Pendragon is a descendant of Morgan le Fay and one of the most talented young magicians introduced. She is a member of Vali's team and later becomes Issei's contracted magician in Volume 17. Her range of magical specialties is unusually broad — she can learn techniques by observation and has mastered security-system magic well enough to counter the specialist Meredith Ordinton.
stray_magicians: Magicians who operate outside legal frameworks or work for hostile organizations are called stray magicians. They often sell their services to the highest bidder regardless of faction. The Khaos Brigade and Qlippoth recruited heavily from this pool. The alliance authorities treat them with the same severity as Stray Devils — they are hunted and dealt with as threats.
security_system_magic: A specialized branch of magic developed and formalized through the Golden Dawn's work. It creates complex magical locks and traps that respond to specific conditions — incredibly difficult to counter without intimate knowledge of the system's architecture. Meredith Ordinton is established as one of its foremost practitioners, using it to target Sacred Gear possessors by rewriting concepts via a holy nail.

    Nekomata

    name: Nekomata
overview: Nekomata are a species of cat Youkai native to Japan who specialize in ki-based combat and spiritual arts. They reside primarily within the East Youkai Faction under the rule of Magari, the Elder Nekomata. The species is predominantly female — male Nekomata are extremely rare. Nekomata power scales with the number of tails they possess, with each additional tail representing a significant increase in ability. Magari, the most senior Nekomata, possesses seven tails.
appearance: Nekomata bear a striking resemblance to humans but possess sets of cat ears and one or more tails, along with slitted cat-like pupils. Their skin and hair typically match or complement their cat form's coloring. In cat Youkai form some Nekomata appear entirely as cats with multiple tails rather than a humanoid hybrid. All Nekomata have naturally enhanced speed, reflexes, and heightened senses befitting a cat species.
abilities: Nekomata use Senjutsu (ki manipulation through nature's life force) and Youjutsu (Youkai magic). Their signature ability Kasha summons ethereal flame wheels tied to their ki — these can carry purification properties effective against undead and demons. Nekomata can suppress their features to appear fully human, though this limits their natural capabilities. Fully mature Nekomata have control over their mating season instinct; younger Nekomata do not.

    Nekomata - Notes

mating_season: Young female Nekomata experience an instinctual mating drive when triggered by emotional stimulation. Koneko entered early mating season in Volume 11, driven by watching Rias and Issei's relationship develop. Mature Nekomata like Kuroka can suppress or control this instinct entirely, and sufficiently experienced elders like Magari can externally trigger or disable the instinct in others. The childbearing threshold appears to be body-development based rather than purely age-based — Kuroka explained that Koneko was physically too young to safely carry a child at sixteen.
nekoshou: The Nekoshou are an extremely rare subspecies — the elite variant of Nekomata capable of mastering both Youjutsu and Senjutsu simultaneously. Only Koneko Toujou and Kuroka are known Nekoshou. They are said to be on the brink of extinction, making their existence significant to the entire Nekomata community. The Nekoshou's combined mastery of both spiritual systems makes them substantially more powerful than standard Nekomata.
tail_growth: As a Nekomata grows in power and experience, they develop additional tails. Standard Nekomata typically have two tails. Koneko grew her third tail during the series after accepting her Nekoshou nature and actively training Senjutsu with Kuroka's guidance. Each additional tail marks a qualitative power increase. Magari's seven tails mark her as one of the most powerful Youkai in Japan.

    name: Nekoshou
overview: The Nekoshou are an extremely rare and highly powerful subspecies of Nekomata. Where standard Nekomata typically specialize in either Senjutsu or Youjutsu, Nekoshou are capable of mastering both simultaneously — making them categorically more powerful than regular Nekomata and placing them among the most dangerous Youkai-class fighters in existence. The species is on the verge of extinction; the only currently known Nekoshou are Koneko Toujou (Shirone) and her older sister Kuroka.
appearance: Nekoshou externally resemble Nekomata — cat ears, one or more tails, slitted pupils. The key physical distinction when in combat or releasing power is the quality and intensity of their ki aura, which becomes visibly different from standard Nekomata when they draw on their full capabilities. In Shirone Mode (a matured form), Koneko can temporarily manifest a grown version of her body.
abilities: The Nekoshou's defining trait is dual mastery: Senjutsu (ki/nature manipulation including healing, ki detection, and body targeting) alongside full Youjutsu capability. This combination is rare even among Youkai. Their Kasha flames can carry purification energy far more powerful than standard Nekomata. In their most advanced state, senior Nekoshou can manipulate life force at a fundamental level — disrupting magic resistance, sealing souls, and sharing ki for healing.

    Nekoshou - Notes

koneko: Koneko Toujou — born Shirone — spent years suppressing her Nekoshou abilities entirely, traumatized by witnessing her sister Kuroka's apparent loss of control. She believed using Senjutsu would cause her to go berserk as she thought Kuroka had. After learning the truth about Kuroka's situation in Volume 5, she gradually began training under Kuroka and later Magari. By Volume 17, she had grown a third tail and developed enough power to regularly use senjutsu in combat. She eventually reclaimed her birth name Shirone Toujou in Volume 24.
kuroka: Kuroka is the older sister and a far more experienced Nekoshou. She killed her former Devil master to protect Shirone from his experiments, then fled into the supernatural underground, eventually joining Vali's team. Despite appearing free-spirited and mischievous, her every major decision has been in service of protecting her sister and restoring the Nekoshou species. She later becomes Xenovia Quarta's Bishop after the Alliance of Hell arc.
extinction_risk: The Nekoshou's near-extinction is a recurring concern. Kuroka's stated motivation for seeking a child with a Heavenly Dragon host was species preservation — she wanted to produce a Nekoshou with extraordinary inherited power. The rarity of their birth (they are not guaranteed from two Nekomata parents) and the historical suppression of their abilities by families afraid of their power have reduced the population to essentially two individuals.

    Norse Mythology Faction

    name: Norse Mythology Faction
overview: The Norse Mythology Faction consists of the Gods and supernatural entities of the Norse pantheon, headquartered in Asgard. Led historically by Odin (All-Father), the Norse faction is notable in High School DxD for maintaining the most advanced magical research tradition of any mythology — Norse Magic is described as more sophisticated in its technical framework than equivalent magical systems from other traditions. The faction is one of the earliest non-Biblical mythologies to align with the Three Factions Alliance, with Odin participating in early diplomatic engagement.
history: The Norse Gods have been active since ancient times alongside the other world mythologies. Unlike the Three Factions who experienced a devastating Great War, the Norse have maintained more of their original leadership intact. However, internal dissent exists — the Evil God Loki attempted to trigger Ragnarok using Fenrir and was only stopped by the combined D×D and Vali Team forces. Following Odin's decision to abandon Rossweisse and leave her in Japan, she was recruited by Rias Gremory and eventually joined Issei's peerage.
abilities: Norse Magic is technically the most elaborate and systematized magical tradition in the series. Rossweisse developed her own circuit-level Norse magic that reduces energy costs while maintaining output — a feat that even Brynhildr, the strongest Valkyrie, acknowledges as surpassing her. Norse divine weapons include Mjolnir (Thor's hammer), Gungnir (Odin's spear), and Gleipnir (the magic chain that bound Fenrir).

    Norse Mythology Faction - Notes

odin: Odin is the All-Father and former chief God of Norse mythology. He is extremely powerful but notoriously perverted, spending his visits to the human world at hostess clubs and harassing young women. His Magic Eye (obtained by sacrificing his original left eye to Mimisbrunnr) gives him extraordinary magical insight. He participated in early Three Factions diplomacy and lent Issei Mjolnir during the Loki battle. His decision to abandon Rossweisse without notice led directly to her joining the Gremory household.
vidar: Vidar is Odin's son and the current chief God of Asgard following Odin's retirement. He carries the Midgardsormr-pact Ragnarok Earth Berserk armor that concentrates the World Serpent's power through his legs. He used the Azazel Cup to engineer a confrontation with Issei over Rossweisse's arranged marriage — not because he wanted to marry her, but because he wanted to see if Issei would fight a God for someone he cared about. He found the answer satisfying.
brynhildr: Brynhildr is the strongest Valkyrie and Vidar's Knight in the Azazel Cup. She wields the Queen of Hearts support technique that can fire memory-imprint arrows targeting personal trauma. Despite her formidable combat abilities, she is profoundly innocent about romance — she and the other Valkyries assigned to Vidar have never had boyfriends and react with scandalized horror upon learning Rossweisse has kissed someone.
rossweisse: Rossweisse is a former Valkyrie and Odin's bodyguard who became Rias Gremory's Rook after being abandoned in Japan without notice. She is now Issei Hyoudou's first Rook and one of his fiancees. Her specialized offensive Norse magic circuit and her mastery of rune, gandol-fairy, and elemental magic systems make her one of the most versatile magical combatants in the series.

    Occult Research Club

    name: Occult Research Club
overview: The Occult Research Club is an activity club at Kuoh Academy that serves as the official front for Rias Gremory's Devil peerage — and later Issei Hyoudou's extended supernatural family — operating in the human world. The club was originally dissolved before Rias revived it upon entering high school, using it as a cover to excuse supernatural absences, conduct Devil's Job work, and give her servants a legitimate school identity. The club room is a renovated three-story building with a Victorian-style interior, a built-in bath area, and a Gremory Family magic circle for teleportation.
history: Rias and Akeno revived the club as President and Vice-President in their first year at Kuoh Academy. Kiba joined as a member. Koneko was placed as a member by Rias after her reincarnation. Issei joined after his own reincarnation in Volume 1. Asia, Xenovia, Gasper, Rossweisse, Irina, Le Fay, Kunou, and Ingvild joined as the series progressed. Following Rias and Akeno's graduation, Asia became President and Kiba Vice-President.
personality: The ORC is the emotional heart of the series. What began as a cover organization became a genuine home for people who had nowhere else to belong — Asia expelled from the Church, Kiba surviving the Holy Sword Project, Gasper sealed away by his own family, Xenovia stripped of her faith overnight. The club's supernatural mandate of research and Devil work is real, but its deeper function is as a chosen family.

    Occult Research Club - Notes

current_roster: President: Asia Argento. Vice-President: Yuuto Kiba. Members: Issei Hyoudou, Koneko Toujou, Gasper Vladi, Xenovia Quarta, Irina Shidou, Ravel Phenex, Le Fay Pendragon, Kunou, Ingvild Leviathan. Faculty Advisor: Rossweisse (formerly Azazel). Notable graduates: Rias Gremory, Akeno Himejima (now attending Kuoh University).
club_room: The clubroom is a converted building on Kuoh Academy's grounds — three stories with a clock-tower on top, white exterior with black roof and ivy. The interior features Victorian-style couches and chairs, wood paneling, a side area that converts into a bath, and a large Gremory family magic circle embedded in the floor for teleportation. The circle is linked to the Hyoudou Residence and allows club members to reach clients or respond to emergencies.
devil_school_requirements: Rias must fulfill legitimate Devil school credits to maintain her presence at Kuoh Academy. This includes documenting and researching supernatural phenomena in the area — meaning the club name is not entirely a front. Encounters with Stray Devils, Youkai, Fallen Angels, and other entities that the club documents contribute to Rias's official Underworld academic record.
significance: The ORC's formation predates the Three Factions Alliance by years — Rias and Sona Sitri establishing their peerages in a school together, cooperating on territorial management, and eventually recruiting members across factional lines foreshadowed the broader alliance that would form. The club is the smallest-scale version of what D×D would eventually become.

    Old Satan Faction

    name: Old Satan Faction
overview: The Old Satan Faction was a coalition of pure-blooded Devils who fanatically supported the world domination ideology of the original Four Great Satans — Lucifer, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Leviathan — and were led by their descendants. The faction was defined by a delusional aristocratic pride that insisted their bloodlines made them the rightful rulers of both the Underworld and the entire world. They rejected the current Devil government's peace initiatives with Angels and Fallen Angels as an intolerable disgrace to the Satan name.
history: The Old Satan Faction formed during the Devil Civil War when pure-blood loyalists chose to continue the Great War rather than accept the post-war reformist government. They lost the Civil War — the combination of Sirzechs Lucifer, Ajuka Beelzebub, and Zekram Bael's backing proved insurmountable — and were forced into hiding for centuries. They reemerged as the largest sub-faction within the Khaos Brigade, using Ophis's power as leverage to advance their agenda.
abilities: Old Satan Faction members inherited the considerable demonic power of their legendary ancestors. Their three leaders each received additional power boosts from Ophis's snakes — bringing their power to levels comparable to the original Satans. Without the snakes they were outclassed by the current Satans but still formidable.

    Old Satan Faction - Notes

leaders: Katerea Leviathan — descendant of Leviathan, killed by Azazel in Volume 4. Creuserey Asmodeus — descendant of Asmodeus, killed by Sirzechs in Volume 6. Shalba Beelzebub — most dangerous of the three, killed by Issei's Juggernaut Drive in Volume 11 after he sent Asia to the Dimensional Gap. All three shared the same fundamental delusion: that they were the true Satans and the current government was illegitimate.
ideology: The Old Satan Faction's ideology centered on pureblood supremacy — only those of original Satan lineage deserved to rule, reincarnated Devils were inferior creatures, and coexistence with Angels or Fallen Angels was unacceptable. This ideology was so blinding that they repeatedly underestimated opponents based on bloodline rather than ability. None of the three leaders were capable of acknowledging their own limitations until it was too late.
defeat: The faction was dismantled progressively: Katerea killed in Volume 4 (Azazel), Creuserey killed in Volume 6 (Sirzechs), Shalba killed by Issei's Juggernaut Drive in Volume 11 following Asia's apparent death. Remaining members were eliminated by Ajuka Beelzebub using his Kankara Formula. A residual group attempted to use the crisis in Volume 12 to stage a coup in the Underworld but was destroyed. The Qlippoth under Rizevim later incorporated some remnants.
historical_note: Vali Lucifer, himself a descendant of the original Lucifer, explicitly rejected the Old Satan Faction's ideology. He found their obsession with birthright childish and their worldview delusional. This is notable because his descent from the original Satan could have made him their ideal figurehead — they attempted to recruit him and were flatly refused.

    Olympian / Greek Mythology Faction

name: Olympian / Greek Mythology Faction
overview: The Olympian faction consists of the Gods of Greek mythology, headquartered on Mount Olympus. They are one of the most powerful mythology factions in the series, with multiple Gods ranked in the global top-ten of combat ability. The Greek Gods maintained a cautious distance from the Three Factions Alliance for much of the series — Zeus expressed interest in cooperation but Hades, one of the three Olympian Trinity Gods, was actively hostile to Devils and Fallen Angels. The Olympians' internal division between Zeus (cooperative) and Hades (hostile) made their faction unreliable as an ally until after the Alliance of Hell's defeat.
history: The Olympians' primary contribution to the series' first arcs was atmospheric — they are referenced as one of the great mythological powers but do not directly engage until the Azazel Cup era. Their most significant plot involvement comes through Hades (who forms the Alliance of Hell) and the primordial Gods Nyx and Erebus (who serve as True Volume antagonists in the Kyoto and Heaven arcs).
abilities: Olympian Gods command divine-class power across all attributes — Apollon wields light-based divine authority that purges Devils, Artemis uses divine arrows that track targets regardless of evasion, Typhon is a King of Monsters with weather-level destructive force, and Hades commands divine aura that overpowers even Vali's Reflect ability.

Olympian / Greek Mythology Faction - Notes

apollon: Apollon is the current chief God of Olympus following Zeus's step back from direct involvement. He appears in the Azazel Cup as part of Typhon's team, serving as Queen. His light-based divine authority differs from Angel holy light — it has a more absolute purification quality. He is warm and gracious in defeat, acknowledging the growth of Xenovia and Irina when they force him to use his full power.
typhon: Typhon — the King of Greek Monsters — is the most visually imposing Olympian present. A thirty-meter blue-scaled giant with snake lower body, his weather-control ability overlaps with Dulio's Zenith Tempest in scale but differs in raw destructive mass. He joins the Rias vs Vali Rating Game match, prompting Ddraig (who selected him as a warm-up opponent) to physically manifest for combat.
primordial_gods: The primordial Gods Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness) are elder beings who predate the Olympians. Nyx appears in Shin DxD as an antagonist who brainwashes Ingvild Leviathan to acquire Nereid Kyrie's Dragon-silencing power. Her Virgin Killer Clothes are a divine garment that specifically negates attacks from virgins — creating a unique tactical problem for Issei. Erebus targets Kyoto in True Volume 3 using its ley lines.
hades_conflict: Hades is one of the three Olympian Trinity Gods alongside Zeus and Poseidon, but his ideology places him in direct conflict with the Three Factions Alliance. His defeat in underground London ends his ability to conduct open hostilities, but the Olympian faction as a whole does not suffer for it — Apollon's cooperative stance and Olympus's formal alignment with D×D separate the faction from Hades's personal war.

    Phenex Clan

    name: Phenex Clan
overview: The Phenex Clan is one of the 72 Pillars of Devil nobility, ranked 37th among them with the title of Marquis. They are one of the wealthiest and most prominent High-Class Devil families in the Underworld, known above all for their phoenix-like immortality and regenerative abilities. The clan's wealth is partly derived from the high value of Phoenix Tears — a golden healing liquid produced naturally by clan members — which they trade across the Underworld.
history: The Phenex Clan's most prominent plot role is the arranged marriage between Riser Phenex and Rias Gremory — a politically motivated union intended to preserve pureblood lines at a time when many 72 Pillar families had gone extinct. Rias refused, leading to the Rating Game in Volume 2 that Issei won through Holy Cross intervention. Following Riser's defeat and a psychological slump, Ravel arranged for mountain training under Tannin that eventually restored him. He later makes a comeback in the Azazel Cup, challenging Champion Diehauser Belial in an exhibition match.
abilities: All Phenex Clan members are born with phoenix immortality — they regenerate from virtually any wound, including the loss of limbs, and can do so repeatedly. Their fire and wind powers give them offensive versatility alongside their defensive near-invulnerability. The clan also produces Phoenix Tears, whose healing properties can cure any injury or illness instantly.

    Phenex Clan - Notes

riser_phenex: Riser is the third son of the Phenex family — arrogant, handsome, and initially contemptuous of lower-class Devils like Issei. His first defeat at Issei's hands (Volume 2) triggered a psychological breakdown and dragon phobia that lasted months. He eventually recovered through mountain survival training with Tannin and Issei. His character development from arrogant antagonist to someone capable of genuine respect is one of the series' quieter growth arcs.
ravel_phenex: Ravel is Riser's younger sister and the most strategically talented member of the Phenex family introduced. She served in Riser's peerage before being traded to Lady Phenex, then to Issei's peerage as his Bishop. As Issei's manager, she handles contracts, logistics, tournament strategy, scheduling, and opponent analysis — essentially running the Hyoudou household's professional operations. She is first-year at Kuoh Academy and has a tsundere dynamic with Issei that gradually deepens into genuine devotion.
phoenix_tears: Phoenix Tears are the Phenex Clan's most commercially significant product. The golden healing liquid cures injuries instantly upon application and is among the most valuable items in the Underworld. Raiser quietly sent three Phoenix Tears to Issei before the Agreas mission in Volume 20, an act that — given their history — carried significant emotional weight. The Tears' only known limitation is Diehauser Belial's Worthlessness ability, which can nullify them on contact.
clan_politics: The Phenex Clan aligns with the Great King Faction in Underworld politics. Despite this traditional alignment, individual family members — particularly Ravel and Ruval — have shown flexibility in working with Issei's group and D×D. The family's enormous wealth gives them leverage across political factions without requiring them to be ideologically rigid.

    Qlippoth

    name: Qlippoth
overview: The Qlippoth was the most dangerous and ideologically coherent antagonist organization in High School DxD, operating as a splinter faction from the Khaos Brigade under Rizevim Livan Lucifer. Unlike the Old Satan Faction (which wanted control of the Underworld) or the Hero Faction (which wanted to prove human supremacy), the Qlippoth's goal was planetary invasion — using the revived apocalyptic beast Trihexa to destroy Great Red and open the Dimensional Gap for an attack on the parallel world Evie Etoulde.
history: The Qlippoth was assembled by Euclid Lucifuge, who brought Rizevim the information about Ophis's power and the existence of Trihexa and the parallel world. Rizevim, bored by centuries of nihilistic existence, found the scope of the plan finally worth pursuing. The organization recruited Evil Dragons through the Sephiroth Graal, built a base inside the stolen floating city Agreas, conducted mass-vampire conversion in Romania, and systematically attacked the Three Factions' supporting structures.
abilities: The Qlippoth's primary asset was Evil Dragons — an army of revived legendary dragons created by exploiting the Sephiroth Graal's resurrection ability on vampires. Individual Qlippoth leaders also brought extraordinary personal power: Rizevim's Sacred Gear Canceller, Euclid's replica Boosted Gear Scale Mail, Crom Cruach's ancient dragon power, Azi Dahaka's forbidden magic arsenal, and Apophis's dissolution domain.

    Qlippoth - Notes

rizevim: Rizevim Livan Lucifer was the son of the original Lucifer and one of only three original Super Devils. His Sacred Gear Canceller negated any power derived from or enhanced by a Sacred Gear on contact — making him effectively immune to almost every major ability the protagonists possessed. He was defeated only when Issei unlocked the Penetrate ability, which bypasses all barriers and cancellation effects. He was killed by Fafnir, who had been haunting his dreams as a cursed spirit since the Heaven battle.
euclid: Euclid Lucifuge led the Magician Faction Nilrem within Qlippoth. He created a replica Boosted Gear Scale Mail constructed from Issei's old flesh left in the Dimensional Gap. His obsession with his sister Grayfia and his attraction to Rossweisse (who reminded him of her) drove many of his personal decisions alongside his ideological commitment to Rizevim. He was defeated by Issei in Volume 17 using Longinus Smasher and captured by Grayfia for interrogation.
evil_dragon_army: The Qlippoth's primary military force consisted of Evil Dragons revived via the Sephiroth Graal — legendary destructive dragons who were sealed or destroyed in antiquity, now revived and distributed across the Underworld and mythology territories as an invasion force. Named Evil Dragons included Grendel (indestructible body, eventually sealed by Koneko), Ladon (barrier and sealing specialist), Nidhoggr (used against Ophis and Issei's parents), and Apophis (Eclipse Dragon, dissolution domain).
defeat: The Qlippoth was dismantled across Volumes 16–21: Euclid captured in Volume 17, Rizevim killed by Fafnir in Volume 20 (after his soul was used as a Trihexa awakening catalyst), Azi Dahaka defeated by Vali in Volume 21, Apophis defeated by Issei in Volume 21. Trihexa was sealed by the combined sacrifice of Sirzechs, Serafall, Falbium, Azazel, Michael, Raphael, and Uriel entering the Isolation Barrier Field alongside it.

    Rating Games

    name: Rating Games
overview: The Rating Game is a competitive combat system created by Ajuka Beelzebub following the introduction of Evil Pieces. Games are used to measure a Devil's strength, determine social standing in the Underworld, and resolve disputes between peerages without open warfare. Top-ranked Devils are considered heroes to the Devil population. The system operates like chess: each King commands pieces (Queen, Rooks, Knights, Bishops, Pawns) with a maximum of 16 players per side. A King's retirement ends the match.
history: The Rating Game was created as a peaceful alternative to direct Devil conflict and as a way to assess the effectiveness of the Evil Pieces system. Over centuries it grew into the Underworld's most popular cultural institution, complete with professional commentary, live broadcasts, fan followings, and an established rankings hierarchy. The system was later revealed to be corrupted — nine top-ranked players had used illegal King Pieces to inflate their power, and games had been pre-arranged by old-guard Devils for commercial benefit. This scandal was publicly exposed by Diehauser Belial's broadcast in Volume 20.
abilities: The game field is a section of the Dimensional Gap protected by a barrier, configured to model any desired environment. A piece's class abilities (Rook strength, Knight speed, Bishop magic) apply during gameplay. Pawns can Promote when entering designated enemy territory. Special rules like Dice Figure (which limits how many pieces can deploy per round based on a dice roll) vary by match format.

    Rating Games - Notes

game_types: Standard matches are straightforward elimination battles. Blitz format (used in Sairaorg's match) emphasizes live audience viewing. Dice Figure format randomizes deployment numbers each round, adding a strategy layer. The Azazel Cup World Tournament format features a qualifying point system where teams accumulate Elo-style scores, with the top sixteen advancing to the final bracket.
ranking_corruption: Nine of the Underworld's top-ranked Rating Game players secretly held King Pieces — illegal items that multiply a person's power by 10 to 100 times. The existence of these pieces was suppressed by the old-guard Devils who controlled the game's management. Games were pre-arranged to protect their investments. Diehauser Belial, the Champion, knew the truth because his cousin Cleria Belial had been killed for getting too close to it. He eventually used a confrontation with Issei to get a private audience with Beelzebub and broadcast the full truth to the Underworld.
azazel_cup: The Azazel Cup is the Rating Game World Tournament established in Volume 22 as the centerpiece of the new Three Factions Alliance era. Named for Azazel by the steering committee, it allows participants from all mythologies — Devils, Angels, Fallen Angels, Gods, Humans, Youkai, and others — to compete on an equal stage. Maximum 16 players per team; team members do not need to be the King's servants; God-class beings count as two pieces. The winning team receives the assembled diplomatic and material support of every participating faction to fulfill as many wishes as possible.
notable_games: Rias vs Riser (Volume 2, first game shown — Rias loses, triggers Issei's engagement-breaking rescue). Rias vs Sona (Volume 5, practice game — Sona wins through tactical superiority). Issei vs Sairaorg (Volume 10, decisive emotional peak — Issei wins after rewriting the Juggernaut Drive chant). Issei vs Dulio (Volume 23, Azazel Cup — Issei wins). Issei vs Rias (Volume 27, Azazel Cup — Issei wins using Nyuutron Beam Cannon on Rias herself).

    Sitri Clan

    name: Sitri Clan
overview: The Sitri Clan is one of the remaining 32 active clans of the 72 Pillars, ranked 12th with the title of Prince — one of the highest-ranked surviving families. They are one of the most famous noble families in the Underworld and are notable for producing the current Leviathan Satan. The clan's signature ability is water and ice manipulation. Unlike many noble families defined by martial prestige, the Sitri Clan is known for its intellectual rigor, advanced medical facilities, and extensive natural territory.
history: Serafall Sitri became Satan Leviathan through the Devil Civil War, which removed her from the clan's heirship line — the price of becoming a Satan is giving up direct family succession. Sona Sitri was named heiress in her sister's place. She spent her school years at Kuoh Academy building her own peerage and pursuing her dream of establishing a Rating Game school accessible to Devils of any background. When her father showed early symptoms of Devil Sleeping Sickness, Sona was forced to assume formal headship ahead of schedule.
abilities: Sitri Clan members excel at water manipulation. Sona has demonstrated creating water creatures — hawks, serpents, lions, wolves, and colossal dragons — of significant combat power. Serafall is an exception, specializing in ice rather than water. The Sitri territory's natural reserves also contribute to the clan's pharmaceutical and medical capabilities.

    Sitri Clan - Notes

sona_sitri: Sona is the most tactically intelligent character in the series — her strategic planning is described as superior to Rias's in pure analytical terms, and her use of the Sitri group during the Kyoto battle demonstrated an ability to command multiple units simultaneously that went beyond anything Rias's group could replicate. Her life's dream — a Rating Game school open to all Devils regardless of birthright — nearly collapsed when the King Piece scandal revealed the game's rankings had been rigged since before she was born. She eventually became the founding principal of Auros Academy in the Agares territory.
sitri_peerage: Sona's peerage at the end of the series: Tsubaki Shinra (Queen), Saji Genshirou (Pawn, all four Vritra gears), Momo Hanakai, Reya Kusaka (Bishops), Tsubasa Yura, Tomoe Meguri (Knights), Bennia Orcus, Loup Garou (later traded to Issei and Rias), Ruruko Nimura (later traded to Xenovia). The peerage is characterized by intelligence and coordination rather than raw power.
medical_territory: The Sitri territory hosts one of the most advanced medical facilities in the Underworld, specifically designed to accommodate reincarnated Devils whose biology remains partially human. Misla Bael received treatment for Devil Sleeping Sickness at a Sitri-affiliated hospital. The territory's natural richness — rivers, forests, farmland — also makes it agriculturally prosperous relative to other noble territories.
serafall: Serafall Leviathan is Sona's older sister and the Satan in charge of Foreign Affairs. Despite being one of the Four Great Satans, she presents as a cheerful magical girl fanatic who calls Sona 'Sona-chan' and causes her endless embarrassment. She hosts a popular magical girl show in the Underworld called Miracle Levia-tan. Her ice magic is powerful enough to freeze an entire region of the Underworld alongside Bandersnatch monsters. She sealed herself in the Isolation Barrier Field with Trihexa alongside the other Satans.

    Slash Dog Team

    name: Slash Dog Team
overview: The Slash Dog Team is an elite covert operations unit led by Tobio Ikuse, built around the members of the original Slash/Dog group that operated under Grigori supervision before the Three Factions Alliance. They function as D×D's intelligence and special operations wing — gathering information, cutting off escape routes, and deploying precisely when conventional forces cannot. The team name comes from Tobio's Balance Breaker, the Night Celestial Slash Dogs, which generates an army of shadow dog constructs across a vast field of darkness.
history: Tobio Ikuse was one of the members of the original Slash/Dog group, a covert team of Sacred Gear users trained by Grigori before the Three Factions Summit. As a young teenager he operated alongside Vali Lucifer and Lavinia Reni — figures who viewed him as an older brother equivalent. His team eventually became the most reliable intelligence and covert operations asset in D×D, participating in almost every major operation from Volume 11 onward.
abilities: Tobio's Sacred Gear Jin (a black dog familiar of extraordinary power) allows him to deploy the Night Celestial Slash Dogs Balance Breaker — a field of absolute darkness covering entire territories, populated by shadow dog copies each wielding cursed blades of different aura wavelengths designed to circumvent enemy adaptations. The darkness also serves as a surveillance and mobility network. His Abyss Side form merges his body with the darkness itself.

    Slash Dog Team - Notes

tobio_ikuse: Tobio Ikuse is a central figure across the True Volumes and later the Shin DxD era, where he appears as a college student who works as a bartender in the evenings while running intelligence operations for D×D. He is calm, perceptive, and practically impossible to surprise. His long acquaintance with Vali gives him an unusual perspective on that relationship. Azazel considered him one of his two best students alongside Vali.
lavinia_reni: Lavinia Reni is a blonde Italian witch who is effectively Vali's surrogate older sister — the one person who can touch him without resistance and who makes the battle maniac visibly flustered. She wields the Longinus Absolute Demise (Ice Princess), which at Balance Breaker level fills entire mountain ranges with a discriminating blizzard that freezes hostiles while leaving allies unharmed. She is functionally immune to most conventional threats due to her ice world's scale.
other_members: The team includes Minagawa Natsume (cheerful logistician), Samejima Kouki (close combat specialist), and Jin (Tobio's Sacred Gear familiar who functions as a team member rather than equipment). In the Azazel Cup, Tobio registers with the tournament while simultaneously running intelligence operations that prevent Hero Faction interference with D×D matches.
eze_context: The EXE intelligence bureau that Azazel planned before sealing himself — intended to have Issei at its center — was modeled on the Slash Dog Team's operational style. Tobio's cooperation and expertise were intended to serve as the foundation for that organization when it eventually materialized.

overview: A Stray Devil is a reincarnated or pure-blooded Devil who has abandoned or killed their master and severed their contract. Going stray is considered the gravest crime a servant Devil can commit — it violates the fundamental social contract that holds peerage society together, breaks the trust that makes the Evil Piece system viable, and results in an uncontrolled supernatural entity operating in territory without oversight. Strays are hunted by High-Class Devil peerages and exterminated on sight.
history: The first significant scene in High School DxD is a Stray Devil hunt — Issei's debut mission as Rias's servant involves the group pursuing and destroying Viser, a female Stray who had been consuming human bodies. The Stray Devil system is Issei's introduction to what Devil work actually entails: not glamorous wish-granting, but also maintaining supernatural order by dealing with creatures that have become dangerous.
abilities: Stray Devils vary enormously in power. Simple strays are weaker than High-Class Devils and are handled by peerages as training. Exceptional cases — particularly those who were already powerful before going stray, or those like Kuroka who were powerful Reincarnated Devils — can exceed High-Class Devil power and require significant force to contain.

    Stray Devils - Notes

legal_status: Any Devil who goes stray is classified as a criminal and a warrant for extermination is automatically issued. The issuing master's peerage handles the hunt in their own territory. Adjacent territories cooperate when a stray crosses boundaries. There is effectively no legal process — the extermination order is permanent and immediate.
causes: Motivations vary widely. Some strays are driven by desire for personal freedom or power they were never supposed to attain. Some suffer psychological breaks from overexposure to demonic power. Some act to protect others — Kuroka killed her master specifically to protect Koneko from his experiments, which the series frames as a morally justified but legally criminal act.
notable_cases: Viser (Volume 1, consumed humans, destroyed by Rias). Kuroka (killed her master, eventually cleared after the full truth emerged). Various unnamed strays appear throughout the series as mission targets for the Gremory peerage during slice-of-life segments.
connection_to_evil_pieces: The existence of Stray Devils is one of the primary concerns raised about the Evil Pieces system. A poorly chosen or poorly managed servant can become an immediate public danger when they go stray. High-Class Devils are therefore expected to carefully evaluate potential servants before reincarnating them, and to maintain strong personal relationships with their peerage to prevent the conditions that lead to straying.

    Student Council

    name: Student Council
overview: Kuoh Academy's Student Council serves as the school's official student governance body and simultaneously as the primary cover for Sona Sitri's Devil peerage operating in the human world — parallel to the Occult Research Club serving as cover for Rias's peerage. The Council manages student affairs, school events, and discipline, while its supernatural members use the position to coordinate territorial management, respond to supernatural incidents, and maintain the barrier that protects Kuoh Town.
history: Sona and Rias co-established their respective student organizations at Kuoh Academy, choosing it as their shared operating territory. The Student Council and ORC maintain a formal rivalry but deep cooperation when supernatural crises arise. The Council's supernatural members were recruited by Sona from individuals she identified as having valuable abilities or who needed protection.
personality: Where the ORC operates with warmth and personal connection as its defining quality, the Student Council runs on precision, accountability, and strategic efficiency. Sona runs it like a professional organization — meetings have agendas, members have defined roles, and underperformance is addressed directly. Several Council members have been publicly spanked by Sona for unauthorized actions.

    Student Council - Notes

leadership_transition: Sona Sitri served as President until her graduation in Volume 22. Tsubaki Shinra served as Vice-President throughout. Upon Sona's graduation, Xenovia Quarta ran for Student Council President and won through a genuinely heartfelt speech — the first school she ever attended, wanting to give something back to it. Saji Genshirou became Vice-President. The first-year Council members include Ruruko Nimura, Kamo Tadami, Nakiri Ouryuu, Reya Kusaka, Bennia Orcus (as a student member), Miraka Vordenburg, and others.
saji_genshirou: Saji is both Sona's Pawn and the most personally devoted member of the Council — he is explicitly in love with Sona and has dedicated his entire supernatural career to supporting her dream of an open Rating Game school. His dream of becoming a teacher runs parallel to Sona's educational ambitions. He achieved his Balance Breaker during the Auros Academy battle when he publicly declared his dream aloud, receiving Vritra's awakening in response.
auros_academy: Sona's ultimate project — a Rating Game school in the Agares territory open to Devils regardless of birth or class. The school was partially destroyed during Rizevim's Qlippoth attack on Auros Town in Volume 17. Sona's determination to rebuild it immediately after the attack — and the fact that children had left drawings and messages on the shelter walls expressing hope to attend — became a defining moment for multiple characters.
operational_capabilities: Sona's peerage is D×D's most analytically capable unit. During Rias's absence in Volume 14, Sona took command of both the Gremory and Sitri groups and handled the underground factory battle with precision. She consistently outperforms Rias in pure tactical analysis and is willing to sacrifice short-term efficiency for long-term strategic advantage.

    Team D×D

    name: Team D×D
overview: Team D×D is the multi-faction anti-terrorist organization officially formed in Volume 16 in response to Rizevim Livan Lucifer and the Qlippoth's threat of releasing Trihexa. It is considered the most powerful combined fighting force across all mythologies in the series' latter half. The name carries multiple meanings: Dragon × Devil (Issei and Vali), Downfall (Fallen Angels), and protection of Great Red — the Dragon of Dimensional Dragons (DxD). Koneko Toujou chose the name.
history: D×D did not form suddenly — it is the institutional crystallization of relationships and alliances that Rias, Azazel, Issei, and Sirzechs had been building since the Three Factions Summit in Volume 4. The Summit attack by Khaos Brigade, the Kokabiel incident, the Kyoto operation, the Rating Game tournament prep — all of these built the network of trust and working relationships that allowed D×D to function effectively as a multi-faction team from the moment it was officially named.
abilities: D×D's strength comes from complementary specialties: Issei's miracle-generating Dragon-Devil power, Vali's Heavenly Dragon tactical brilliance, Rias's command ability, Tobio's intelligence network, Cao Cao's spear of God-killing, Dulio's weather-scale Balance Breaker, Sun Wukong's ancient combat mastery, Sairaorg's unstoppable physical force, Rossweisse's analytical magic, and the combined power of every Gremory and Sitri peerage member.

    Team D×D - Notes

formal_leadership: Official leader: Dulio Gesualdo (Joker of Michael's Brave Saints, world's strongest exorcist) — chosen for public image, as a human-origin Angel with a broad appeal across all factions. Sub-leader: First-Generation Sun Wukong — chosen for combat authority and his ability to train all members to fight God-class opponents. Azazel served as the strategic architect before his sealing.
composition: Rias Gremory's peerage, Issei Hyoudou's peerage, Sona Sitri's peerage, Sairaorg Bael's peerage, Vali Team (formal and informal), Hero Faction (Cao Cao), Tobio Ikuse's Slash Dog Team, allied Youkai forces (Yasaka, Kunou), Church warriors (Dulio, Griselda, Irina, Vasco Strada), Brave Saints, Dragon Kings (Fafnir, Vritra-Saji), and representatives from multiple mythologies including Norse (Rossweisse, Vidar), Greek (Apollon), Chinese (Sun Wukong's team), and Hindu.
post_sealing_restructuring: Following the sealing of Sirzechs, Serafall, Falbium, Azazel, Michael, Raphael, and Uriel inside the Isolation Barrier Field, D×D became the world's primary peacekeeping force without the institutional support of the Satans or senior Seraphs. Ajuka Beelzebub handles strategic direction; Gabriel leads Heaven; the day-to-day operational burden falls entirely on the existing D×D members.
azazel_cup_and_eze: D×D's Azazel Cup participation is both competitive (each team trying to win for their own wishes) and organizational — many D×D members are in competing teams, and the tournament's existence strengthens inter-faction bonds while providing a legitimate stage to demonstrate individual power growth. Azazel planned before sealing himself to eventually create EXE — a shadow intelligence bureau with Issei at its center — to serve a role analogous to what the Slash Dog Team currently provides.

    Three Factions Alliance

    name: Three Factions Alliance
overview: The Three Factions (San Daiseiryoku) refers collectively to the Angels of Heaven, the Devils of the Underworld, and the Fallen Angels of the Grigori — the three groups of supernatural beings central to the Biblical world of High School DxD. Together they spawned the Judeo-Christian religious tradition, and their ancient Great War against one another defined the world's power structure for millennia. The Great War: Thousands of years before the series, the three factions went to war. The God of the Bible, the original Four Great Satans, and Azazel leading the Grigori fought each other in a conflict that annihilated the leadership of all three sides. The God of the Bible and the original Four Great Satans all died in battle, leaving the three factions depleted and leaderless. The Fallen Angels retreated first under Azazel's orders. The Kuoh Treaty and Current Alliance: Centuries of hostility gradually gave way to a secret peace — the so-called Kuoh Treaty — negotiated at Kuoh Town between the current Satans (Sirzechs, Serafall, Ajuka, Falbium), Michael and the Four Great Seraphs of Heaven, and Azazel of Grigori. This treaty established a tentative cooperation and mutual non-aggression. When the Khaos Brigade emerged as a shared threat in Volume 4, the three factions formalised their alliance openly. They jointly created Team D×D to combat the Qlippoth, organised the Azazel Cup tournament to strengthen inter-faction ties, and began assisting one another in rebuilding numbers.
    abilities: Post-War Restructuring

    Three Factions Alliance - Notes

post_war_restructuring: Following the Evil Dragon War, three of the Four Great Satans (Sirzechs, Serafall, Falbium) sealed themselves in the Isolation Barrier Field alongside Azazel and three of the Four Great Seraphs to contain Trihexa indefinitely. Ajuka Beelzebub became the sole active Satan, and Gabriel became leader of the Angels. The Three Factions are notable for having no backing from a living God, yet remain one of the dominant supernatural powers in the world.

    Types of devils

    name: Types of devils
overview: Pure-Blooded Devils (Junketsu Akuma) are pure Devils such as the original Four Great Satans and the original Devils created by the Mother of all Devils; Lilith, including the first generation aristocrat Devils of the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons, each who ruled their own domain in the Underworld along with their Pure-Blooded descendants. Each clan of 72 Pillars has a unique ability that is specific to their clan which originated from their progenitor, such as the Bael's Power of Destruction or Phenex's Immortality, as the descendants of the clans are born with such unique abilities which occasionally get passed to other clans as Pure-Blooded High Class Devils interbreed with each other. Issei promoting to Queen Issei Hyoudou, a Reincarnated Devil. Stray Devils (Hagure Akuma) are Reincarnated Devils who have diverted away from their masters for their own selfish desires. Without their masters to keep their powers in check, they become a great threat if their powers go beyond their control. The Devils take this case very seriously, and any Devil who becomes a Stray will usually be killed on the spot. Mixed Heritage Devils (Kongō Isan Akuma) are Devils either born between a Pure-Blooded Devil and a Reincarnated Devil, or between two Reincarnated Devils. They could not be considered as Half Devils due to both their parents being Devils, and are not considered Pure-Blooded Devils due to their diluted blood as High-Class Devils look down on Reincarnated Devils. Possible famous Mixed Heritage Devil would be Coriana Andrealphus, which could explain why the Andrealphus is stated to be extinct in the Light Novel Volume 8, but considered active in the first lore. Vali Lucifer, a Half Devil. Super Devils (Chōetsusha{{{2}}}), also known as Transcendental Beings are Devils considered irregular beings due to possessing abilities surpassing realm of Devils, making others wonder whether or not they can be considered devils. At first, three people were considered Super Devils: Sirzechs Lucifer, Ajuka Beelzebub and Rizevim Livan Lucifer who have power exceeding Satan-Class Devils; Sirzechs and Ajuka, in particular, has enough power to be considered among the "Top 10 Strongest Beings" using their full power. In fact, their coup d'etat against the Old Satan government succeeded partly due to Sirzechs and Ajuka's support. After the Evil Dragon War, due to their continuous and abnormal growth, the current Heavenly Dragons: Issei and Vali were nominated as Super Devil candidates. After the Hell Disaster, they were both officially certified as Super Devils after being approved by Zekram Bael. Furthermore, Hades' research created two Super Devils named Balberith and Verrine, but they haven't been certified by the underworld government.
appearance: Reincarnated Devils (Tensei Akuma) are created by High-class Devils using Evil Pieces to reincarnate other species into Devils; who serve the High-class Devil who is their King. Reincarnated Devils also appear to have much higher fertility than Pure-Blooded Devils, as in the special novel High School DxD EX that takes place 30 years in the future, Issei's future children were born in a short amount of time, with Koneko and Kuroka's children being born on the same day. Vali appears before Issei and Koneko
personality: Half Devils (Han Akuma) are Devils of mixed heritage created by the interbreeding of Devils and other species, most notably Humans. Due to the Pure-Blooded Devils pride and their obsession with pureblood purity, the Half Devil descendants of the Pure-Blooded Devil clans are often scorned and looked down upon. However, due to their mixed blood they gain the abilities of both species, as Half Devils with Human heritage can manifest Sacred Gears. Two famous Half Devils are Vali Lucifer and Ingvild Leviathan, who are the half-Human/half Devil descendants of the original Satan clans, in addition to being the possessors of the Longinus Sacred Gears.

    Vampires

    name: Vampires
personality: Vampires are a race of supernatural creatures in High School DxD, noted for being more arrogant and status-conscious than even the Devils. Unlike Devils who allow social advancement through the Evil Pieces system, Vampire society is rigidly hierarchical — only those born into High-Class Vampire families hold any real power.
abilities: Two Factions, Abilities, Romania Arc, Post-Arc

    Vampires - Notes

two_factions: Vampire society is divided into two rival ruling clans. The Tepes Faction is the more powerful and politically dominant clan, traditionally patriarchal and governed by Kings. The Carmilla Faction is the other major clan, historically led by Carmilla herself. The two factions have been in long-standing conflict and rarely cooperate.
abilities: Vampires possess enhanced physical abilities far surpassing humans, immortality, the power to turn other beings into thralls or lesser vampires, and various supernatural abilities depending on bloodline. Higher-class vampires can transform into bats, wolves, or mist. Like other creatures of darkness, they share weaknesses with Devils — vulnerability to light-based powers and holy elements.
romania_arc: Rizevim Livan Lucifer exploited the Sephiroth Graal (Valerie Tepes's Longinus) to mass-convert Tepes Faction vampires into Evil Dragons, effectively weaponising and destroying a significant portion of the faction in his quest to assemble an army. This event, and the rescue of Valerie Tepes by the Occult Research Club, forced the surviving Vampire factions to ally with the Three Factions for protection.
post_arc: Valerie Tepes became the new ruler of the Tepes Faction. The Vampires became allied with the Three Factions following the Romania disaster.
