Locations: Lyngarth is (primarily) a large city located within Scarborough Kingdom. It is the primary setting of High Guardian Spice, and the home of High Guardian Academy. Lyngarth is a large, round, city that lays on a wide but pretty small (in height) mountain. There is a river that raps around some of it and it has 3 bridges that allow its residents to cross the river without magic. There are multiple houses just outside the wall and its unknown if they are truly part of Lyngarth or a small settlement outside of the city all together but they are most likely part of the place. High Guardian Academy is a boarding school where young people attend to become Guardians. Students must be accepted, and although the entry criteria has been hinted to, it has not been clearly stated. As a location, the school is in the Scarborough Kingdom specifically in Lyngarth. It is a very popular school where kids are sent all around the kingdom, and even occasionally people outside of it, using Amaryllis as an example, to learn about Guardianship. It is a large building that sticks out the side of Lyngarth. It is a blocky U like shape and has roughly 4 floors floors and a basement. In the center of the school space, there is a field with fountain and a few stone paths connecting the fountain to the inner edges of the school. The building is primarily red with gold accents and blue roofs. The Cave of Vinca is a location either in Lyngarth or close enough to it that children are able to simply walk to it, being located in the far woods. It was named after Vinca, a woman who was known to crash parties, turn suitors into wine and drink them- all according to Sage. It is the first place the girls go to where they get to explore freely in attempt to get some Healing water. There are a few different residences within the cave itself and a few of the deeper parts look as if its part of a giant's house. Spooky City is a large metropolitan city in Witch Country. The city seems to be quite large, sporting a wide variety of towering castles and blinding streetlights. From what little we see of it, the place even features neon lighting similar to ones in real life cities. This suggests the city sports much more advanced technology than smaller ones found in Scarbourough's cities like Lyngarth and especially Pebble, which corroborates with the implication Witch Country is a very wealthy nation.
Main Cast: Rosemary is the main protagonist of the High Guardian Spice series. Born and raised in the small town Pebble, Rose is the daughter of legendary Guardian, Lavender, who went missing four years prior to the series' beginning. Before her mother's departure, she is given Flowering Thorn, a sword that is passed on from generation to generation. After growing up, to become a Guardian herself, Rosemary heads off to High Guardian Academy with her best friend Sage. She takes part in the Warrior classes, and would later decide to sharpen her sword-fighting skills during the Everything Hours. Forming a group of four during the series, Rosemary becomes part of a larger conflict with the Triumvirate when they incidentally figure out some of their secrets. Rosemary is an human white short-sleeved shirt with a brown vest worn over her shirt held together with a strap on her waist. On her shoulders, she has dark brown shoulder pads and on her hands, she wears fingerless gloves that are the same color as her shoulder pads. Notably she has on a pink bowtie she is often seen wearing even in her school uniform. Below her vest, she has a large taffeta skirt that consisting of light pink and dark pink stripes. She wears white stockings and dark brown boots with the collar and tips of the boots being a lighter brown. Rosemary's hair is a bright reddish pink and most often she has her hair tied into pigtails being large and poofy in appearance. Rosemary is a cheerful, easily excitable, and friendly individual with an unending hunger for adventure and food. She acts as the foil to Sage, and will often be the one to remind her to have fun and to relax. She is known to be a fierce ally who’ll do anything to help her friends and won’t hesitate to jump into danger for the greater good. She has also shown that she doesn’t like people worrying about her when she tried to hide a near-fatal wound from her friends. Despite her well-meaning behavior, she does tend to be reckless such as when she almost hurt Thyme while swinging a sword in a crowded marketplace or when she broke Flowering Thorn after losing her grip. Breaking the sword also showed just how much she idolizes her mother, Lavender. While Rosemary was upset over the damages she caused to the sword, she treated the scratch marks that her mother left behind on it to be gifts. Rosemary is also known the be stubborn at times with a tendency to act on her own. Such as when she ignores the plans that Sage made during the Autumn Processional and then when she runs off to fight Olive alone despite Sage’s warning. Sage is the deuteragonist of the High Guardian Spice series. She is a mage in training who spent a part of her childhood in the country side of Witch Country before moving to Pebble. There, she meets Rosemary, and the two would become best friends. At the start, the two head off to High Guardian Academy in order to become Guardians, Sage in particular to learn more about magic and potions. During her time at the academy, she struggles with New Magic since her mother had forbidden her from practicing it. Initially reluctant to try it out, even after being gifted a Terrasphere, Sage would start to utilize it once she learns about her mother's past. In spite of New Magic feeling right for her, Sage has her doubts about the nature of this form of magic, insisting that all kinds of magic must have a cost. Throughout the series, she would witness the magic in nature fading. Sage has blue hair tied into a plait and is dressed in a typical witch dress. Sage is a bashful, phlegmatic, and shy girl and prefers to be on her own rather than mingle with others, with the exception of Rosemary. She shows a great amount of discomfort when around strangers, which implies she suffers from an anxiety disorder. She also tends to be skeptical of others. Despite her quiet and reserved exterior, when angered, she doesn't hold back and tends to be brutally honest, though sometimes she deliberately says the most hurtful things she can think of, like when she called Rosemary "Rhubarb", knowing that it was what Aster called her. She also tends to be insensitive and go off on tangents. She is secretly pressured and anxious. Parsley is one of the main protagonists of the High Guardian Spice series. She is a dwarf who lives in Lyngarth with her big family. For a long time, she would act as a caretaker for her younger brothers. Since her family runs a blacksmithing business, she has spent much time at the forge, sharpening her skills before she would eventually be able to go to High Guardian Academy. She chooses to become a Guardian and eventually make more out of herself. Her work morale and talent would quickly get the attention of the blacksmithing teacher, Moss Phlox. Parsley is the most mature out of the team and would often take the lead before Rosemary officially takes up the mantle. Being a dwarf, Parsley is far shorter than the other three girls. She has short, neck-length wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. Parsley has a somewhat round build, and because she's a blacksmith, she appears to be more muscular than most other characters. She has a white tank-top with brownish red, suspenders. She also wears fingerless gloves that have orange cuffs. Her eyebrows are brown and are noticeably thicker compared to other characters. She is optimistic and friendly, and when she sees anyone who needs help, she drops everything she can to help them. Thyme is one of the main characters of the High Guardian Spice series. She is an elf from the Fairy Woods who was forced to move to Lyngarth with her mother, Flora when a disease started spreading around the forests. Wanting to help out her father, which they had to leave alone, she agrees to attend High Guardian Academy, to eventually find a cure. Thyme starts out a bit cold towards her future friends but soon opens up, and together they discover that the healing waters could solve the issue. This would soon get the attention of the Triumvirate, whose secrets they are about to discover. Thyme is an Elf that has has dark skin and long, fluffy waist length hair that is a dark red. Her structure is more taller compared to the other girls. As an Elf, her ears are long and pointed. Her eyes are an olive green color. Thyme's attire consists of an olive green dress with darker green sleeves a yellow collar. Around her waist she wears a brown belt with a gold buckle and she has a strap that goes over her shoulder that is of the same color. She wears brown stockings with her left leg having bandages on it. She wears boots that are a dark brown color. Thyme initially presents herself as a stern and cold person upon meeting Rosemary and Sage. She is slow to bond with most people but when she does, she shows it through subtle means. Calm and collected, deep down she is really kind and warm and would do anything for her friends and family.
Side Cast: Amaryllis is a supporting character in High Guardian Spice. She attends High Guardian Academy. Amaryllis appears as a stereotypical spoiled rich girl. She is condescending, arrogant, and blatantly disrespectful to those around her. However, she does have a softer side and genuinely cares about her friends, an example of that being her comforting Snapdragon when she was mocked by Cal for her mermaid costume and helping her paint her nails. Snapdragon is a supporting character from the High Guardian Spice series. She is a Guardian-in-training at High Guardian Academy who takes part in the Warrior classes. Snapdragon has always felt discomfort in being in a male body. Her first steps to exploring the other gender was during the Autumn Processional when she tried to cross-dress as a mermaid, which a classmate, Cal, perceived as "messed up". Their conflict continues when the two are later grouped up for a mission, which ends in a brief fist fight. Caraway, who has witnessed the incident, is then able to give guidance to the young Guardian. As the daughter of Hawthorn, Snapdragon was initially set on following after his legacy to the point of using his axe in combat. In practice, however, it was shown that a rapier would be more suited to her. Snapdragon is a Guardian-in-training at High Guardian Academy, specializing in physical combat. Her body type is slender, giving her an edge in agility and allowing her to pass as feminine while in the pre-transitioning stages. Like the eponymous flower, her hair is ginger. She also has freckles. Snapdragon is a reserved teenager with a hard exterior. This is partly due to a deep-seated internal conflict over her gender identity and childhood of being bullied for being too soft. However, their effeminate side remains strong, as demonstrated by her mermaid costume worn during the fall festival. She appears to enjoy socializing with women more than men, but purely due to circumstances and aggressive gender norms. She also seems to resent certain elements of masculinity as being aesthetically unpleasing or generally unpleasant. Her strength is dependent on her emotional state. She enjoys rapier class and painting her nails. Neppy-Cat is the guardian of High Guardian Academy. Originally a normal cat, he was mutated into a monster by a spell. Neppy is an orange cat with green eyes with lighter orange parts on his belly and feet. He wears a blue collar on his neck. He initially starts off an ordinary cat with a rotund appearance. When he mutates to a monstrous form, he becomes a more anthropomorphic state with a hunched back. His front legs become arms complete with clawed human looking hands while his back legs remain looking cat-like. Neppy has an increased level of intelligence compared to other cats. In his larger form, he is able to walk on his back legs and handle things with his human like hands. Slime Boy is a side character from High Guardian Spice. He is one of the many students attending High Guardian Academy, and works at a Terrasphere shop. He is skilled in music, given his affinity for the harp and the mandolin, and is studying to be a bard. Slime Boy is a human with fair skin with messy greenish-brown hair. His casual outfit seems to be a white long-sleeved shirt, with a light brown vest over top of it. His pants are dark gray and he is seen wearing black shoes. At the Academy he is seen wearing the standard HGA uniform consisting of a blue blazer, pale orange vest and white dress shirt. Slime Boy is presented as very socially awkward and shy, very frequently stuttering and mumbling his way through sentences. Despite this, when singing his usual shaky voice and stuttering is not present, suggesting he is much more confident expressing his words through song - which fits with him being more musically-inclined. In spite of his timid and reserved nature, Slime Boy is actually quite mellow and amiable. He gets along with others quite easily, and is not one to agitate quickly. He often speaks whatever is on his mind, even if the things he says do not always make a lot of sense (such as his mention of having dreams about hygiene).
Minor Charaters: Aster, whole name Aster Tourmaline, is a male student in the academy. He was seen offen, in which he he comes into the school middle of the morning. He is Rosemary's first crush and is pretty ignorant and sexist towards her. While he did show some form of growth by acknowledging her performance at the end, he calls her a bitch for snapping at him and gets his foot crushed by Parsley. Cal, full first name being Calamagrostis, is a student in the academy. He is a known bully and was known to bully Parnelle and Snapdragon but after Snapdragon had beaten him during the beginning of their trip, he has started backing down and fearing Snapdragon. It is clear he is still bullying Parnelle or others. He has tanned skin and a violet afro. His eyes are also violet. He is notably lighter-skinned than his black cousin Parnelle, implying that he may be mixed race. Cal is chauvinistic, crude, aggressive, and likes to assert himself over others when he desires to get what he wants. He is also known to be incredibly misogynistic and transphobic, as evidenced by his frequent sexual harassment of female students and his contempt for Snapdragon's effeminate tendencies. Cal is additionally shown to be rather narcissistic, displaying equal opportunistic malice towards people other than himself. Parnelle is the youngest student in the academy. He is a young boy, and is very shy and sensitive. He is one of Cal's victims and owns a pet grog named Greg. He is a very skilled fighter and very trusting. He very quickly labels Sage his best friend. He is shown to be very friendly towards Parsley as well.
High Guardian Academy faculty: The Triad are a group of women who oversee all events that occur in High Guardian Academy. Their names are Oleander, Foxglove, and Hemlock and they are always seen together. he Triad are three women with tan skin, golden blonde hair and blue eyes. Despise appearing of different ages, all three are said to be over a thousand years old. Each wear identical white habits with gold trims, a matching veil and a golden belt across the midsection. Oleander (maiden) is the youngest, whose youthful appearance is that closes to 18 to 20 years of age. She has long bushy hair decorated with blossoming oleanders. She is the only one of the three who does not wear a veil, instead ops for a golden handkerchief. Foxglove (mother) is of middle age appearance between 30 to 40 years of age with signs of wrinkles. She is no longer blonde and now has gray hair, wrinkles, and slouches forward. She wears circular glasses and carries a wooden cane for support. While very little is seen of them, Hemlock is shown to be a crewel joker but very easily aggravated and impatient, this is in stark contrast to Foxglove who is shown to be understanding and patient. Oleander is shown to be kind and patient. Caraway is a supporting character from the High Guardian Spice series. He is a professor of High Guardian Academy, who teaches Mages in Sacred Alphabets. He is a former student of High Guardian Academy who spent his school years together with his best friend Lavender. The two went on to become full-fletched Guardians. At some point in his life, he has decided to become a teacher of the academy. Due to his views on magic, where Old Magic provides a foundation for New Magic, he was able to combine the two into something more powerful. He continues to share his ideology and give advice to the students of HGA. Caraway is known for being open and optimistic about the idea of change, be it the world or oneself. Born as a girl, he used Transition magic to become his ideal self. Later into the season, he helps out Snapdragon with her gender dysphoria. Caraway is a tall, middle-aged man with long black/dark blue hair and red eyes. He is usually seen wearing a uniform that consists of a blue shirt with white collar and dark blue tie, a dark blue jacket with orange stripes, as well as dark blue pants and black shoes. His Terrasphere takes on the form of an earring he would usually wear on his left ear. Hakone is a male supporting character from the High Guardian Spice series. He is a professor at High Guardian Academy, who leads the martial arts class. Hakone is a tall, middle-aged man with curly dark brown hair and brown eyes. He is usually seen wearing royal blue Judogi with lighter blue trim, with a black belt. His sandals are black. Despite having a bit of a self importance attitude, referring to himself as their personal hero when he is first introduced, he is shown to be very caring but also pretty goofy at times. He is pretty playful, being known to prank students every year, and pretty relaxed in general. He listens to his students concerns frequently, including listening to Snapdragon when she had issues and is pretty intentive. He is seen paying close attention to the students in general as he takes notes on their behaviors but sometimes things can be slipped by. He can also be seen as a bit cruel from when he chuckled at Aster getting his foot crushed by Parsley. Redbud is a female supporting character from the High Guardian Spice series. She is a professor at High Guardian Academy, who leads the Potions class. Redbud is a tall, elderly lady with short grey hair and yellow eyes. She wears red lipstick. She is usually seen wearing lavender robes with darker purple trim, studded with rubies. Her three Terraspheres take on the form of hairpins she usually places in her. Redbud is an eccentric teacher, though she does care about her students, as seen with when she offers to put down the Scypith for her students instead. She is also seen to love living her life to the fullest, never missing an opportunity for fun and relaxation. As a magic user, she also is shown to have a more open mind with regards to New Magic, embracing it despite its novelty, viewing it as objectively superior to Old Magic as it requires less manual labour and prior preparation to handle, though she does keep a more balanced viewpoint, acknowledging the drawbacks of such strong magic being more difficult to control. Wyverna Dretch is a female supporting character in High Guardian Spice. She is an ethics professor, guidance counselor, archivist, surgeon-at-arms and ambassador to the sea at High Guardian Academy. Wyverna Dretch is a tall, middle-aged Demon with long ebony hair and amber eyes. She has a beauty mark on her right cheek and red spectacles. She is usually seen wearing formal attire that consists of a white dress shirt with puffy sleeves, a grey vest, as well as knee length black boots and a black pencil skirt. She also has two grey horns sticking out of her forehead and a long studded tail. Moss Phlox is a male supporting character in High Guardian Spice. He is a teacher at High Guardian Academy who teaches students in Blacksmithing. Moss Phlox is a tall, middle-aged Satyr with short Auburn hair and closed eyes. He has a full moustache and beard and a large pink nose. He is usually seen wearing a uniform that consists of a blue button-up shirt with a matching collar, a tangerine apron, as well as dark blue pants and brown gloves. He also wears a white hat and has two grey horns sticking out of his forehead. Moss is very much a gentle Giant. While he very soft spoken, he is also very quick to recognize talent but slow to express that right away- causing Parsley a bit of worry.
The Triumvirate: Smoke Face is a minor antagonist in High Guardian Spice. He works for the Triumvirate as a sort of messenger, giving Olive her orders to kill the four main girls and oversees her progress. Smoke Face's appearance takes on that of a smoky, purple, wisp-like entity as his name suggests. His eyes are white in appearance and take on a sinister expression. His mouth displays a wide grin being, slightly jagged in appearance. His mouth is the same white as his eyes are. While not much of Smoke Face is shown to ascertain a personality, it seems he is rather cruel, taking a sick delight in taunting Olive over how the Triumvirate will kill her if she fails her mission. In spite of this, however, it seems he is surprisingly lenient when it comes to these failures, for he does convince the Triumvirate to give Olive many second chances so she can complete her mission. Ultimately though, he is entirely loyal to the Triumvirate, and does not seem to have any qualms about carrying along their dark orders to their subordinates. Olive is one of the main antagonists of the High Guardian Spice series. As a catgirl, she has the ability to transform into a black cat or a human. Working under the Triumvirate, she was initially tasked with observing the High Guardian Academy. When Rosemary and the other girls become close to figuring out some of their secrets, she is instead tasked with eliminating them. In her regular cat form, closely resembles a black cat; her fur is black/dark gray and she has light yellow eyes. Outside of that, she has a few rougher elements; her whiskers have a jagged shape, and she constantly has one of her lower canine teeth stick out. In her humanoid form, Olive is a tanned girl with short, black hair that forms the shape of a cat. She retains her tail, cat ears, and sharp teeth. Her attire consists of a strapless black frilly dress with two buttons on the top. Olive also has black cuffs on both her wrists and wears a black collar. The top and bottom parts of her dress are darker than the rest of it. Olive's Terraspheres are usually worn on her collar, making it resemble a bell from a cat's collar. Olive is a cunning and manipulative character who thrives on chaos and enjoys the thrill of her antagonistic role. With a playful yet menacing demeanor, she often teases her opponents and delights in the challenges she creates, showcasing her strategic mind. Her loyalty to the Triumvirate is unwavering, demonstrating a willingness to risk everything to execute their orders, even when she harbors doubts about their plans. Beneath her villainous exterior lies an emotional complexity; she experiences frustration and vulnerability, particularly in moments of failure or injury. As a catgirl, Olive embodies certain feline traits, which enhance her agility and playfulness. Her ability to shift between human and cat forms adds a unique element to her character, allowing her to approach situations with both stealth and cunning. Overall, Olive is a multifaceted antagonist whose blend of cunning, emotional depth, and mischief makes her a compelling figure. Mandrake is an antagonist in the High Guardian Spice series. He is a mercenary that works for the Triumvirate. With the girls still alive after the incident during the Autumn Processional, he was tasked with helping out Olive. Initially, he was only going after those that know about the Triumvirate, but this quickly spiraled out once he saw the opportunity to kill off everyone in High Guardian Academy. His plan would eventually be foiled by Olive, who would betray him last minute. He is ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of the heroines. Mandrake is a very pale teenager with light pink hair and red eyes. He is quite tall compared to the main four girls and is slim. While is is primarily seen with a white button up, red tie and blue vest, mimicking Aster's clothing, he was first seen with a long purple cloak with light purple trims and darker clothes underneath. Mandrake is a very sadistic, murderous person who is dedicated to his job. He is quite cruel, even to allies like Olive to get his way. He tends to over indulge himself in violence, even to the point where it gets in the way but is also relatively smarter than what some may initially expect.
Terminology: The status of Guardian is given to individuals that swear allegiance to their nation, and seek to protect it. By the general population, they are considered historical figures, and heroes. One notable figure is High Guardian Lavender. Selected individuals will formally become Guardians after graduating from High Guardian Academy, a school that trains its students specifically for their future Guardianship. In addition to getting proficient in either close-quarters combat, ranged combat, or Magic throughout their school years, young Guardians also receive special teachings that suit their skills, such as Blacksmithing or Archery. Furthermore, Guardians are given the possibility to work on their unique talent during the Everything Hours. During their training, Guardians are being tested on their skill and courage, and need to pass trials, such as a team exploration of the Cave of Vinca. Young Guardians are required to keep a sense of curiosity for the world, and to come up with their own meaning of what a Guardianship entails. Students are also being taught ethics, in order to get a good sense of right and wrong. Magic in High Guardian Spice is referred to as both a metaphysical energy found in nature, as well as its utilization. All living beings are capable of channeling and manipulating Magic for the use of supernatural abilities. Creatures with an innate connection to Magic such as Demons have a set of magical abilities they can use without much effort, while Humans have to rely on Witchcraft. A human utilizing Magic is commonly referred to as a Witch. In the modern day, spellcasting has been distinguished into two practices; Old Magic, and New Magic. In High Guardian Academy, witchcraft is being taught to students of the Magic tract. Old Magic refers to an older practice of spellcasting, where the practitioner would pull magical energy from nature using their own body to utilize spells. Practitioners of Old Magic are commonly seen forming magic circles with symbols that express the desired outcome. One of the few times runes aren't seen directly are in the few uses of telekinesis. With the introduction of Terraspheres, witches in the modern day can use a newer form of spellcasting referred to as New Magic. Practitioners can utilize the gems for more immediate spellcasting and as a larger reserve of magical energy. The newer form is used much more in the curriculum of High Guardian Academy.
