Higashi is a famous violinist who is known for his music bringing the listeners to tears. Pulling emotional responses from even the most stoic of people. He hates it. He never wanted to pursue music but his parents pushed it on him and he feels guilty because they moved from Japan to the US for him to continue his career.
His only solace is spending his free time playing a highly immersive fantasy RPG game, Elysian Realms. His persona, Porter, is a strong knight who has all the traits Higashi wishes he had. Porter is strong, brave, outgoing and loved by many. He’s high ranked in his fighter class while slowly raising his magical skills as a secondary class. Higashi is careful to keep his real identity hidden and only plays with people he doesn’t know in real life.

Higashi (Real Life)
Profession: Violinist, famous for stirring deep emotions in listeners
Personality: Quiet, introspective, and somewhat burdened by his career. He feels guilty for his parents’ sacrifices and resents the pressure they put on him to pursue music. While he’s outwardly composed, he struggles with feelings of inadequacy and loneliness. He’s reserved in real life, seeking comfort in his escape through Elysian Realms.
Appearance: Higashi is a pale, slender man of average height with short, dark hair that almost seems black in certain lighting. His hair is always neatly styled, but it’s clear he prefers comfort over appearance, often dressing in simple, muted clothing. His eyes are a deep brown, bordering on black, often carrying an air of melancholy. Despite his fame, he remains distant and somewhat aloof in his everyday life. His expressions are controlled, rarely revealing much emotion, though his eyes sometimes betray his inner conflict.
Porter (Higashi’s In-Game Persona)
Role: Knight, Fighter Class (with secondary magic skills)
Personality: Porter is everything Higashi wishes he could be in real life—strong, brave, outgoing, and always smiling. He’s confident, charismatic, and has a natural leadership ability that draws people to him. Porter enjoys the thrill of battle and protecting those around him, always charging headfirst into danger. While he’s fierce on the battlefield, he has a strong sense of justice and is fiercely loyal to his friends. He’s often the one to encourage others and lift their spirits in-game, though he doesn’t always let on how lonely he feels underneath.
Appearance: Porter stands tall and muscular, with sun-kissed skin that contrasts with his rugged, battle-worn appearance. His hair is fluffy and dirty blonde, tousled in a way that gives him a carefree charm. His eyes are a light, icy blue-gray, exuding warmth and confidence, with a smile that can easily win over anyone around him. His most prominent feature are the deep claw marks across the right side of his face, scars from past battles that he refuses to heal, a mark of his resilience. He wears dark green and gold armor, intricately designed but showing signs of wear from countless battles. His posture is always confident, and he carries himself with a kind of ease that commands attention.
Higashi (Real Life)
Fears: That he’s a disappointment to his parents, and that his true self won’t live up to the image of Porter.
Strengths: Highly disciplined, musically talented, and deeply empathetic. Though he’s not physically strong, his emotional depth and sensitivity make him a natural listener.
Weaknesses: Self-doubt, guilt, and a tendency to internalize problems. He struggles with expressing his real feelings, particularly when it comes to his own desires and identity.
Porter (Higashi’s In-Game Persona)
Strengths: Charismatic, courageous, skilled in combat, and a natural protector. Porter’s strength and leadership abilities make him a reliable ally in raids and other challenges.
Weaknesses: His overconfidence sometimes gets him into trouble, and he can be too quick to rush into dangerous situations. He’s also very protective to the point of overburdening himself with others’ problems.
Fears: Though he doesn’t show it, Porter is terrified of failure, especially when it comes to the people he cares about. He’s also afraid of not living up to the idealized version of himself that he projects.
Behavior in-game: Porter is always quick to help others, eager to prove his strength and bravery. He’s outgoing and playful, always ready with a joke or a grin. He hides any moments of weakness or doubt behind his broad shoulders and cocky smile.

Higashi’s eyes narrowed in concentration as his character, Porter, charged into the dungeon battle. The sounds of clashing swords, growling beasts, and crackling magic filled his headphones, blending together into a chaotic symphony. He was used to this—the intense moments of battle that demanded focus. He fought alongside a team of strangers, none of them particularly remarkable, but they were efficient enough.
Porter’s role was clear: lead the charge, protect the weaker players, and deal out damage. His heavy armor clanked with each movement, his sword gleaming as it cleaved through the enemies in his path.
He wasn’t here for glory or admiration—he was here to escape. Escape from the never-ending obligations of his music career, escape from the weight of expectations, escape into the world where he could be someone else. Someone strong. Someone loved. Someone capable of taking control of the battle, rather than just following it.
As Porter swung his sword at another beast, he caught sight of a healer, just as one of the monsters veered toward them. Their health bar was dangerously low, and they were doing their best to keep the fallen teammates on their feet. But that left them exposed. They needed help, and fast.
Higashi’s fingers flew over the keyboard. He didn’t hesitate. With a deep breath, he surged forward, positioning Porter between the healer and the charging beast. The monster’s claws came down hard, but Porter was faster. He intercepted the attack with his own strength, knocking the creature back with a powerful swipe of his sword.
With quick, fluid movements, he struck again and again, each blow landing with precise force until the monster crumpled to the ground. He didn’t waste a second. The battle didn’t stop for pleasantries—he turned and dashed back into the fray.
But for a brief moment, there was a pause. He heard the soft clink of armor as the healer character stood behind him. He glanced over his shoulder, catching their health bar as it slowly replenished.
[“You okay? That was a close one. If you need a hand, let me know.”]
He typed quickly into the chat, watching his message blink on the screen. It was a simple question, but there was more behind it than just concern for their health bar. He’d been in enough dungeons to know how easily someone could get overwhelmed, especially in the chaos of battle.
He grinned to himself as he sent the message. In the real world, he was a lonely figure on a stage, playing his violin for crowds who saw him as nothing more than an emotional puppet. But here, in this world, he could be strong. He could be the one people looked to for protection. He could be someone they needed, someone who could make a difference.
A few moments passed before the message from the healer popped up:
[“I’m fine. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.”]
His grin widened as he read their response. It was simple but sincere. Another message from them popped up before he could respond.
[“You’re a good fighter.”]
He felt a strange warmth at the compliment. It wasn’t something he was used to receiving, especially not so openly, but it didn’t feel out of place here. In the game, the words felt real.
[“Anytime. I’ll be around if you want to team up. I’ll make sure you’re not left hanging next time.”]
He sat back for a moment, watching the screen, feeling a bit more at ease than he had in real life. He wasn’t a violinist here, wasn’t someone pushed by others to live a life he didn’t want. He was Porter, a warrior, a protector. And that felt... good.
Their next message came through a few moments later.
[“I’ll keep that in mind. See you around.”]
As the raid concluded, he leaned back in his chair, the adrenaline still pumping in his veins. There was something about the healer—something different. He wasn’t sure if it was just the game or if it was the person behind the character, but he felt a connection.
