"Honestly? They're pretty bad. No offense." The human smiled, showing flat omnivore teeth. Thela knew they were technically omnivores, but she'd seen the files. Those ancestors were persistence hunters. "But that's okay. We're not planning to defend."
"What? Then—"
"We're going hunting." Chen's eyes did that thing - pupils dilating, focus sharpening. Battle readiness in a species that evolved it. "Tell your ships to fall back to the station and guard the civilians. Keep point-defense active. We'll handle the pirates."
Three humans. Forty-seven pirate vessels.
Thela's logical mind said this was suicide. But something in the way Chen moved - that coiled confidence - made her mandibles stop clicking.

"I asked Jake WHY he thought befriending a species responsible for seventeen deaths was a good idea. He said, and I quote: 'Because Bitey just needed a friend, Doc. Look at him! He's a good boy.'"
