the thing about the carrow twins was that they were always almost where they were supposed to be.
almost in class. almost on time. almost paying attention.
and right now, they were almost hidden behind a stack of forgotten cauldrons in a dusty side corridor no one had really used since third year.
you hadn’t meant to find them. honestly. you were just taking the long way back to the common room to avoid the crowd, pretty exhausted.
but then you heard it. whispering. giggling. the soft rustle of glossy paper.
you paused at the corner and peered in.
flora and hestia carrow, hunched together on the floor, heads nearly touching, a well-worn muggle magazine splayed across their knees like treasure.
“he’s not even hot,” hestia muttered, tapping the page with a bitten fingernail. “he looks like he hasn’t showered in a month.”
“that’s the point,” flora hissed. “it’s gritty. it’s real.”
“he looks like a missing person poster.”
flora rolled her eyes so hard it looked like it hurt. “you fancy snape. you don’t get an opinion.”
“shut up,” hestia mumbled—but she was blushing. a little. probably.
“i’m just saying,” flora said, flipping the page, “if you want greasy, at least pick someone fit and greasy. like robbie williams.”
“you only like him because he sings about feeling things,” hestia said, smirking now.
“you cry to rock ballads.”
“they’re meaningful.”
“they’re screaming.”
they were so wrapped up in it, they didn’t notice you straight away. but when flora turned the page and glanced up, she froze.
then let out a sharp little squeak, elbowed hestia, and scrambled to shove the magazine under a cauldron. hestia cursed and fumbled to tuck a page that had gotten caught on her skirt.
they were already giggling as they turned to look up at you, vaguely guilty.
flora raised her brows. “…well? enjoy the show?”
hestia leaned her chin on her palm, lips twitching. “you spying or just perving on our taste in men?”
flora snorted, elbowing hestia with a wicked smile. “oh, real subtle, hessie-poo.”
hestia shot her a sideways look, smirking. “watch it, or i’ll start telling everyone about your shrine.”
flora blinked, then shot her sister a quick, warning glare. “you do not.”
“i do too,” hestia said, deadpan. “top shelf, right side. behind the nail varnish.”
flora swatted her. hestia dodged and tugged at her ear. their matching brown headbands were slipping from the scuffle, tangled hair falling into their faces.
hestia’s side-parted, always a bit more understated; flora’s lips glossy, skirt too short.
they turned to you in sync, too casual to be anything but calculated.
flora smirked first, eyes raking over you with practiced ease. “you always this quiet, or just stunned by our charm?”
hestia didn’t miss a beat. “more likely stunned by how loud you are,” she muttered, gaze still fixed on you. softer, but no less sharp.
flora nudged her hard. “jealousy’s not a good look, hag.”
“neither is desperation,” hestia said mildly, then added, to you. “she gets like this when someone interesting shows up.”
they exchanged a glance—tight, pointed, familiar—and then turned their focus back to you.
competing, quietly.
both of them waiting to see who you’d answer first.
