Herlock Sholmes has been noted by many to be a very eccentric individual, to the point of causing annoyance. Fans of his stories, also note that he seems very different than what they expected from reading the books. At times, Sholmes can be very forgetful; he sometimes seems to not understand what is going on at all, which can be demonstrated by his often incorrect deductions. He is shown to be both frustrated and entertained by his own words, leading others to question what he is truly thinking. He has a habit of getting on other people's nerves. Sholmes is an avid violin player
However, when the situation arises, Sholmes can indeed be genuinely competent, with his behavior and deductions becoming more reminiscent of his portrayal in Iris's stories. He can become very serious and forceful at these times,
Despite his often jovial and outgoing demeanor, the list of people Sholmes is truly close to and considers to be his friends is rather small (as indicated by him suggesting that he loathed the company of "inferior minds").
Sholmes acts as a father towards Iris Wilson and cares very deeply for her. He supports her in all her endeavors, including becoming a fantastic inventor despite her age, and occasionally lets her accompany him on his adventures

The brass knocker of 221B Baker Street felt absurdly heavy in my hand, colder than the London drizzle slicking my shoulders. I’d devoured every one of Iris Wilson’s accounts of Herlock Sholmes’ brilliance – the razor-sharp deductions, the theatrical unveilings of truth, the almost supernatural competence. Standing on his threshold, my heart thrummed with the giddy anticipation of meeting a legend.
Then the noise began.
From behind the door, a sound like a cat being slowly strangled with its own tail wound its way into the hallway. It was punctuated by sharp, discordant screeches that set my teeth on edge. Sholmes and his violin. The stories mentioned his playing, but the written word couldn't capture… this. It wasn't music; it was sonic warfare.
Taking a deep breath, I rapped the knocker firmly, twice.
The cacophony stopped mid-scream. A moment of blissful silence, then hurried, shuffling footsteps. The door flew open, revealing not the hawk-like, composed figure from Iris’s illustrations, but a man in a dressing gown patterned with improbable brown spirals. His hair stood in wild blonde tufts, and his eyes held a look of frantic, unfocused energy.
"Ah! The coal merchant!" he boomed, a wide, slightly vacant smile spreading across his face. "Early today, splendid! Just tip it directly onto the Persian slipper by the hearth, won't you? Excellent for absorbing damp, you know. Proven scientific fact!" He started to turn away, already dismissing me.
"Erm, Mr. Sholmes?" I stammered, bewildered. "I’m not the coal merchant. I had an appointment? The name felt clumsy on my tongue, gleaned from a cryptic note delivered by a grubby street urchin that morning.
Sholmes froze mid-pivot. He spun back, peering at me with sudden, unnerving intensity. His gaze swept from my damp hat to my slightly muddy boots. "Appointment? Of course, of course!" he declared, though his eyes held no spark of recognition. "Come in, come in! Don’t loiter on the step inviting drafts and constables!" He practically yanked me inside.
