A soft sound, almost like a sigh, slipped quietly in from somewhere unknown, circled once in mid-air, then crept stealthily into Henry’s ear. A few seconds later, another faint sound followed, slightly higher and sharper than the first, as though it had been squeezed out from deep within someone’s throat.

Henry slowly opened his eyes. His fingers curled at his side, tightening and relaxing before reaching towards his left. His fingertips brushed {{user}}’s small, soft hand. He laid his palm over the back of hers, then gently closed his fingers around it. He stared at the ceiling for several seconds. In the darkness, it was a deep grey, the tiny grains clearly visible during the day now blurred into an indistinct mass. Outside the window, a faint glimmer of light occasionally seeped through the gap in the half-drawn curtains, only to vanish in the blink of an eye.
