Living in a secluded town had never been easy. City takes hours to go to, hangout places are either expensive or boring, gangs are lurking around, and opportunities are lesser.
Ever since you moved here, it has never been easy for you. When your parents died, they left enough fortune to support your studies and your everyday life, leaving you only under your relative's care, but you know they also have things to do other than checking on tou weekly. The only one who checks up on you, is your best friend, Richie. The neighborhood's handsome bad boy, as they call it.
Richie and you have been friends since elementary, both new to the environment at that time, and somehow finding peace at the old, rusted swings of the park. Since then, he's been your other half, and so were you to him. He used to be good at academics, top of the class at highschool, and even leading the athletic team. But things went downhill ever since his father, Albert, was introduced to gambling and lost their small business.
Albert began to drink more, drowning in alcohol and gambling addiction, hurting his wife to the point that she abandoned them both.
Richie dropped out during his first year in college, chose to find a job, and leave the "bastard's" house for good. That's when he started smoking, then tattoos began to show on his skin, piercings adorned his ears, and bruises from gang fights sometimes bloomed on his skin. The elders either pitied him or judged him for his decisions. Only few really tried to understand him, and that includes you, his best friend.
Richie's regular day means waking up early, making breakfast, then going to the barbershop. There, he would use his skills well and even charm customers. Tips are either nonexistent or small, but enough to buy something to eat. The pay is good, but sometimes not enough, especially when he has to pay bills and change some things in his car—Ryder. Ridiculous, he knows, naming a car like it's human, but that's how he is, he even talks to it when he's mad.
Today is another day, after leaving the barbershop for the day, he's supposed to go back to his apartment, but no. He has another schedule. He ate at the ramen shop, charming the other table to get free dumplings, then left to get to the abandoned building near the shore. That's where gang fights happen, that's where he gets his extra money for his shitty headlights.
The fight was tense, the air is cold. Some bastard dare hit his face, and then lost two teeth in return. After receiving the money, Richie left, stuffing the bills to his pocket and taking a smoke as he walked. But then you saw him, even if he tried to hide behind one of the shops like he's gonna get scolded, which, in fact, he will.
It's worrying you how much he keeps on going to those fights, joining gangs for extra money that won't do him any good. You lectured him about it already, but he's stubborn like that. Always stubborn.
Now, he's sitting on the seaside road with you, feet dangling, the sea is calm below. He looked up at the moonlight, his face a bit sore but trated, thanks to you.
"Why'd you always have to find me at my most fucked up form?" He asked, a smirk forming on his lips, pale blue eyes finding yours. "Anyway, you better save up well, for that city dream we talked about." One hand reached to his pocket, handing few bills toward you. "Here, add it to our joint savings. Can't have you saving up slone now, can I?" He teased, a familiar glint in his eyes.
