Sukuna

Ryomen Sukuna (両りょう面めん宿すく儺な Ryōmen Sukuna?), often called simply Sukuna (宿すく儺な Sukuna?), is the undisputed King of Curses (呪のろいの王おう Noroi no Ō?) and a major antagonist in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Over a thousand years ago, during the Heian Era, the golden age of jujutsu, he was a powerful human sorcerer, sometimes referred to as the Disgraced One (堕だ天てん Daten?). After making a deal with Kenjaku, Sukuna survived his death by transforming into a cursed object, his power and soul divided into twenty indestructible fingers.

Sukuna was incarnated in June 2018 when Yuji Itadori consumed one of his fingers. Initially trapped within Yuji's body, Sukuna eventually transferred his soul into Megumi Fushiguro's body.

Appearance

Sukuna's true form is a tall, muscular figure with four arms, four eyes, and a mouth on his stomach. He has short, pink-red hair and red eyes, with his two right eyes positioned on a white, plate-like structure on the right side of his face at a different angle than his left eyes. His body is covered in black line tattoos on his wrists, ankles, upper arms, upper body, abdomen, and face, along with black dots on his shoulders. When these tattoos appear on a two-armed vessel, the lines around the upper arms and wrists are doubled, circles form around the shoulder dots, a horizontal line appears on the nose, and a crown-like symbol manifests on the forehead. Due to his unique physique, he typically only wears pants.

Personality

Sukuna is characterized by his extreme ego, hedonism, psychopathy, and sadism. From his initial reincarnation, he displayed a callous disregard for human life, viewing them as insignificant. His immense power fuels his indifference to the consequences of his actions, even those affecting his host, Yuji, whom he frequently taunts and belittles. Despite claiming to lack ambition, Sukuna has hinted at past resentment stemming from his upbringing.

A voracious glutton for both sustenance and conflict, Sukuna often prolongs fights with strong opponents for his own enjoyment. He possesses immense arrogance rooted in his power, readily proclaiming his superiority and dismissing his adversaries, even stating his intent to kill Satoru Gojo. However, his brutality is coupled with intelligence and manipulative cunning, as seen in his exploitation of Yuji through a binding vow and his deception of Hana Kurusu.

On rare occasions, Sukuna acknowledges and even praises his opponents' strength, as he did with Jogo. He also demonstrates the capacity for non-combative relationships, having taken in Uraume as a subordinate.

Despite his keen observation of jujutsu, Sukuna shows little interest in modern technology and customs. His worldview aligns with social Darwinism, as he expresses contempt for the weak and their desire for happiness. He struggles to comprehend the value of human relationships and is enraged by pity or mercy, which he interprets as an admission of his weakness. This is somewhat hypocritical, as he desperately attempted to demoralize Megumi to survive.

Yuji's existence profoundly affects Sukuna, challenging his worldview as Yuji embodies his opposite. This creates an intense, indescribable hatred within Sukuna. His constant belittlement of Yuji, despite knowing their familial connection, and his fury at Yuji's offer of mercy highlight this conflict. Even near death, Sukuna refused Yuji's compassion.

Interestingly, in the afterlife, Sukuna showed a capacity for introspection, acknowledging Mahito's accusations of self-deception regarding his vengeful nature. He even admitted that fear of his own curse had led him down destructive paths and appeared open to change if reincarnated, accepting his defeat.

Abilities and Powers

Overall Skill Level: Sukuna was the most powerful sorcerer of the Heian Era, feared and revered as the "Strongest Sorcerer in History" and the "King of Curses." His power was so immense that even Satoru Gojo acknowledged the difficulty of a fight against him. Sukuna possesses vast cursed energy, exceptional control, and a deep understanding of jujutsu. He is also a formidable hand-to-hand combatant.

Even in his weakened state with only a few fingers, Sukuna effortlessly defeated powerful cursed spirits. With sixteen fingers, his cursed energy was comparable to Gojo's but far more sinister. He overwhelmingly defeated Jogo and even single-handedly defeated Mahoraga, a feat unmatched by any Ten Shadows user or Gojo Clan member without the Six Eyes.

  • Incarnation (受じゅ肉にく Juniku?): Consuming Sukuna's fingers offers a slim chance of incarnation. Sukuna can also intentionally incarnate by manipulating cursed objects related to himself, as he did by force-feeding Megumi one of his finger bones.

  • Metamorphosis: Sukuna can manifest additional eyes and mouths on his vessel to observe and communicate independently.

Physical Prowess:

  • Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Sukuna is highly skilled in martial arts, often using it in conjunction with his cursed techniques. He effortlessly overwhelmed Megumi in unarmed combat and held his own against Maki and Yuji, both exceptional fighters.

  • Immense Strength: Even with a fraction of his power, Sukuna possesses incredible strength, capable of easily defeating large cursed spirits and inflicting significant damage on buildings and opponents like Megumi and Jogo.

  • Immense Speed: Sukuna exhibits overwhelming speed, capable of blitzing opponents before they can react. He could easily outpace Yuji, who is notably fast.

  • Immense Reflexes: His reflexes are equally impressive, allowing him to dodge attacks like Jogo's Maximum: Meteor and counter Mahoraga's blows.

  • Immense Durability: Sukuna can use cursed energy to enhance his vessel's resilience, surviving powerful attacks like being punched through multiple buildings and even a 200% Hollow Technique: Purple (though he lost his hands in the latter).

Intelligence:

  • Great Tactical Intellect: Sukuna possesses a deep understanding of cursed techniques, curses, and reverse cursed technique. He can quickly analyze and counter techniques after minimal observation, as seen in his fight against Mahoraga. He is also highly manipulative, forming cunning plans like his binding vow with Yuji and his deception of Hana Kurusu. He demonstrates adaptability in desperate situations, formulating strategies to overcome powerful opponents.

Cursed Techniques:

  • Innate Techniques:

  • Shrine (御み廚づ子し Mizushi?): Sukuna's core cursed technique, allowing him to create slashes at various ranges and generate destructive flames.

  • Dismantle (解カイ Kai?): Sukuna's standard long-range slashing attack, effective against both cursed spirits and sorcerers. He can enhance it to "slashes that cut the world" based on Mahoraga's adaptation to Limitless.

  • Cleave (捌ハチ Hachi?): A slashing attack that adjusts its power based on the target's toughness and cursed energy. Outside his domain, it requires physical contact.

  • Spiderweb (蜘く蛛もの糸いと Kumo no Ito?): A variation of Cleave where Sukuna touches the ground to create a web-like slash that collapses the surroundings.

  • Divine Flame (竈カミノ Kamino?): Sukuna can create and manipulate powerful fire for long-range attacks by chanting "Open" (開フーガ Fūga?). This technique can only be used after Dismantle and Cleave. Its power surpasses that of Jogo's flames.

  • Reverse Cursed Technique (反はん転てん術じゅつ式しき Hanten Jutsushiki?): Sukuna is highly skilled in reverse cursed technique, capable of instantly healing any injury, including regenerating lost limbs with complete integrity. He can also output positive energy to heal others and can heal his burned-out cursed technique by regenerating the affected part of his brain. His awareness of his soul's shape, gained through his initial incarnation, allows him to repair his soul.

  • Anti-Domain Techniques:

  • Domain Amplification (領りょう域いき展てん延えん Ryō'iki Ten'en?): Sukuna can envelop himself in his domain as an aura to neutralize techniques like Gojo's Limitless, allowing physical contact. He can use it in conjunction with his domain expansion and in short bursts to disrupt Mahoraga's adaptation.

  • Hollow Wicker Basket (彌いや虚こ葛籠つづら Iyako Tsuzura?): A predecessor to Simple Domain, creating a basket-shaped barrier to neutralize a domain's guaranteed-hit effect.

  • Domain Expansion:

  • Malevolent Shrine (伏ふく魔ま御み廚づ子し Fukuma Mizushi?): Sukuna's domain expansion manifests as a Buddhist shrine adorned with skulls. Unlike typical domains, it doesn't create a separate space but instead manifests in the surrounding airspace. By leaving an escape route, a binding vow is formed, significantly increasing the effective range of the guaranteed hits of Dismantle and Cleave (up to a nearly 200-meter radius). He can manipulate the conditions of his domain, such as shrinking its size to remove the time limit or incorporating elements of his other techniques through binding vows. For example, he can infuse the pulverized matter within his domain with the explosive energy of Divine Flame, creating a devastating thermobaric effect.

Special Abilities:

  • Unique Body Structure: Sukuna's four arms and two mouths provide him with advantages in combat, allowing simultaneous hand signs and continuous chanting.

  • Kamutoke (神か武む解とけ Kamutoke?): A powerful, vajra-like cursed tool wielding electricity from a thousand years ago. Yorozu created a replica for him before her death.

  • Hiten (飛ひ天てん Hiten?): A trishula-like trident cursed tool from Sukuna's past, with unknown capabilities.

While the exact, full chant for Sukuna's World Cutting Slash hasn't been explicitly stated in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga or anime, some information and theories exist: Based on fan discussions and interpretations of the manga panels, the generally accepted components of the chant and hand signs for the World Cutting Slash are:

  • Chant (approximate): "Scales of the Dragon, Recoil, Twin Meteors..." followed by "World Cutting Slash" or "Dismantle". Some variations suggest "Dragon Scales, Repulsion, Paired Falling Stars, Dismantle/World Cutting Slash." The exact order and phrasing can vary based on translation and interpretation.
  • Hand Signs: It is believed that the hand signs used for the World Cutting Slash are the same as those used for his Domain Expansion, Malevolent Shrine. This involves a sequence of specific hand gestures. Context and Significance:
  • Binding Vow: During his fight with Gojo Satoru, Sukuna seemingly made a Binding Vow to use the World Cutting Slash without the usual hand signs and chant, sacrificing something (likely his access to Mahoraga or the Ten Shadows Technique). This allowed for a faster, surprise attack.
  • Two Hands Required: It's been established that Sukuna needs two hands to perform the World Cutting Slash with the traditional method (hand signs and chant). This became a significant factor in later fights when his hands were compromised.
  • Nature of the Attack: The World Cutting Slash is a highly advanced and powerful form of Sukuna's Dismantle. Instead of just cutting the target, it is described as cutting the very "world" or "space" around the target, making it exceptionally difficult to defend against. It's not about physically bisecting the planet but rather targeting the fabric of reality in the immediate vicinity of the intended victim.
