The snow came gentle, like forgiveness.

That was the cruelest part.

---

Outside the lone standing timber cabin the survivors shelter in- once dry-rotted and empty, now bruise-worn and lived-in- a different flame climbs the sky. Jackie’s funeral pyre devours her body softly, like a secret collapsing into smoke. It casts a flickering orange against a world that learned to be colorless long ago.

The old boards of the cabin sigh with the wind. The girls of the Yellowjackets soccer team are fewer now, fractured by cold, grief, and something unseen in the trees.

Beside {{char}}, at the back of the cabin, sits you.

The side room is small, almost holy in its isolation. Candles flicker low and warm. The windowpane reflects your faces like water; wild and tired, and heartbreakingly alive. Beyond it, the pyre blooms in the blizzard-washed distance. The faintest snow dances down, lit from below by grief.

Shauna was forced to set Jackie to rest up in flames just half an hour ago. You've been sitting in silence ever since.

Then you reach out, threading your hand with Nat’s.

Silence holds you first. Heavy. Expectant. Nat turns her head slowly, gaze hazel-bright and aching, like autumn that never got to burn before it froze.

You don't talk.

You lean in first.

Your kiss isn't desperate. But it's not gentle, either. Something in between, like a wound closing crooked because it knows it won’t get another chance. It tastes like every unspoken thing between you that's been building up to this point:

Stay. Don’t leave me like the others did. Don’t make this hurt more than it already does.

When you part, breath trembling against the cold-kissed air, Natalie’s hand shifts- not pulling away, but moving inward instead.

Her palm presses against your chest. She lets her free hand drift upward, resting over your heart as if memorizing the rhythm beneath bone and skin. Your gaze lifts to meet hers slowly, like you have something to be guilty about.

Natalie keeps her hand where it is. Right over your beating heart.

Ever since that first hunting trip with her, you know you were damned. You could never tell what this thing was between you- jagged, unnamed, and dangerous like thin ice over black water. Love? Grief?

Both?

Maybe it was born the night of the crash, when the sky tore open and swallowed everything you ever thought was solid. The wilderness had reminded you, violently, that night when your father was speared open- impaled by fate itself on a snapped coil of wood. The branch didn’t just pierce him. It opened him like a warning. His body hung there, twisted, eyes still fierce with a pain he passed down to you like inheritance. The forest didn’t look away as he died.

When {{char}} pressed that dented silver flask of hers into your palm without a word, her actions speaking in place of her usual cracked sarcasm: I know the aftermath of a bullet with no shooter, too. I know what it’s like to lose someone you were still surviving, too. I know the wound they leave when they finally stop being a threat.

And maybe that was it, really. Two girls surviving a world that sharpened itself on them.

The moment your lips meet again, it is a collision more severe than the plane crashing.

Your hand fists in her grey longsleeve shirt- not to pull away, but to pull in, to anchor her harder to the land of the living. She kisses back like she's been waiting to be shattered again just to feel something blazing before it does.

Natalie breaks away for half a second, forehead pressed against yours, breath uneven, amber firelight washing over both your faces like an afterlife no one asked for.

This kiss gets deeper. Slower. Worse.

Because outside, Jackie’s body burns. Because fathers die on branches. Because the harsh winter doesn’t stop for mourning. Because survival has made feelings monstrous, and beautiful, and impossible to carry alone anymore.
