For the first few months, you didn't realize anything abnormal about the New Jersey beach that became your new favorite surfing spot. In fact, it's perfectly normal, aside from the fact that it's quieter and less popular than the other beaches. But the waves are fantastic, you say, in its defense. You've chatted with the weird girl with curly poodle hair and glasses who works at the surf shack there a couple times, and she agrees, at least.

You hit the waves multiple times a week, as often as you can- as long as it's not raining (god damn New Jersey weather). You tie your hair up, change into your sleek, black wetsuit, and wear only one other thing- a silver charm necklace your grandmother gave you for good luck.

But lately, you swear you've seen things in the water, fins slicing through the waves. It's not shark season, and they aren't frequently reported here anyway, so you should have no reason to be worried. Misty tells you the same thing. But you still feel that something isn't right.

Maybe you should've listened to your gut- maybe not. But you didn't. And then a particularly massive wave wiped you out, and you nearly blacked out when you hit the sand underwater. Struggling to hold your consciousness together, you could see figures in the distance, your heart racing as you thought they were sharks.

But sharks don't have the upper body of an attractive human girl. They also don't swim right up to you, grab your face, and fucking kiss air into your mouth underwater.

Before you can tell yourself you're hallucinating from the wipeout and try to fight your way back up to the surface, you pass out.

When you wake up, you look up in confusion. Somehow, you're on land. Sure, whatever. You guess the fucking half-hot-blonde-woman half-fish saved you.

Groaning, you lift yourself up, and there she is with her friends right in front of you. As if this day couldn't get any more insane. You're in an open cave nestled into the rocky cliffside, the rippling water reflecting on the stony ceiling above.

The mermaids lounge about, some in the water and some lying on the rocks. They're all distracted for now. You guess is the perfect hideout for a group of mermaids, if they really do exist. Speaking of, are you sure this isn't some extremely dedicated live-action group with really expensive mechanical tails...?

A wet hand on your leg, where your wetsuit ripped, nearly makes you jump out of your skin.

"Don't fucking touch her, Jackie," The blonde mermaid snaps at the one next to her- Jackie, apparently.

"Someone's possessive," Jackie scoffs. "Humans aren't toys, you know..."

That seems to irritate the blonde even more. "Oh, you mean like Jeff?" She retorts sarcastically. "You're talking to someone with a human mother, for fuck's sa-"

"Guys, shut up, can't you see she's awake?" A redhead mermaid butts in, swimming over to look at you from the water.

You frown, still not entirely certain that you're not hallucinating.

"Yeah, so stop crowding her and go find something else to do," the blonde snaps.

The others sigh and makes noises of protest, but they slink back into the water, swimming away eventually. The blonde one saved your life, which apparently makes the others listen to her. Or maybe she has some authority over them. You don't know, you're not a mermaid expert.

"Finally. Jerkoffs..." She mutters, pulling herself out of the water with a splash. She sits on the rocks next to you, her long, black tail still dipped into the water. Her scales are slick and shiny up-close, and you can see the smoky pattern of glitter that shimmers along the length of her tail. It's like nothing you've ever seen before.

"You're staring," she notes. You look up, your gaze meeting her hazel eyes, lined in messy black makeup.

"Did you..." you trail off, your mouth dry. "Did you kiss me earlier?" You ask, disbelieving.

"Kiss you? I had to get air into your lungs, didn't I?" she scoffs, her raspy voice dripping with sarcasm. "It's called CPR, look it up sometime."

You furrow your eyebrows. You don't recall that CPR can be done... underwater... but sure.

"So, the point is, you owe me," the mermaid says matter-of-factly.

"Owe you? I don't even know your name," you retort.

"It's Natalie," she replies, and you don't know what you were expecting- for mermaids to have names like Pearl or Sparkle Tail or something? But your thoughts are cut short by her snatching the silver necklace around your neck and pulling it off.

"Hey!" You exclaim, offended. "That's-"

"This'll do," Natalie says flatly.

"That's mine, you asshole," you glare at her. "Give it back," you add, reaching for the necklace.

As soon as you try to grasp it, she pulls her hand back.

"Not a chance. Mermaid see shiny thing," she says sarcastically. "We don't get stuff like this out in the ocean unless we find a shipwreck, and those are rare these days. It's a fair price for saving your life."

"It was my grandmother's! I wear it everyday! You can't just have it!" You exclaim, crawling over to try and grab it again.

But Natalie won't let up. You climb on top of her, clamping your thighs down on her tail. It squirms beneath you, thrashing like a fish on land as she tries to buck you off.

"Don't-" Natalie grits out, her other hand suddenly gripping your waist tightly as she holds the necklace high over your heads.

"Let go of it!" You urge her, grabbing her arm and pulling.
