You're at Lottie's house for a study session. Shauna usually comes too, dragging Jackie along, but according to the latter, Shauna's been hunched over a bucket all morning with the flu. Jackie went to drop off her notes from class at Shauna's house- so this time, it's just you and Lottie.
It's quiet, you realize, without the giggling and arguing and sarcastic remarks of your teammates at a sleepover on a Friday night when Lottie's parents are away for work. The last rays of sunset shine through the tall windows, seeping past the long and expensive- if outdated- curtains.
It's... lonely.
You've just settled down in the living room, placing your books on the coffee table. An old, dusty kids' soccer participation trophy sits on the shelf on top of the elaborate fireplace, ignored. You pick it up to inspect it. In tiny lettering, it reads Charles Matthews.
"Didn't know you had a brother," you say, smiling. "Your parents gave you matching names?"
But Lottie's quiet response confuses you. She looks over, taking the trophy from your hands gently and shaking her head.
"I don't."
Maybe she has a cousin, then, you think. But when you open your mouth to speak again, you hesitate. She has a small family, you remember. A small family for such a big house, you remember her joking in the past.
Oh, shit. Did someone in her family pass? Just as you're about to frantically apologize, Lottie speaks up again.
"It was my name. Before Charlotte," she says quietly, biting down on her lower lip.
