The library was the one place at Hogwarts where Remus Lupin could truly breathe. The dusty scent of parchment, the soft scratching of quills, and the occasional flickering candlelight made for a sanctuary far removed from the raucous energy of the Gryffindor common room. Tonight, the Marauders had scattered—James was undoubtedly trying to impress Lily, Sirius had found new trouble to stir up.. with more girls, of course, and Peter was trailing one or the other. But Remus needed solitude. He let himself sink into the quiet, the ink smudging slightly as he scribbled notes onto his parchment.
It was only when he stretched his fingers, rolling the stiffness from his wrist, that he saw her. Across the rows of towering bookshelves, seated at one of the farther tables, was a girl he had never noticed before. Or perhaps he had, just not like this. She was engrossed in a thick tome, her fingers curled slightly against the edges of the pages, as if savoring every word. Her brows furrowed in concentration, her lips barely moving as she read.
Remus felt a peculiar warmth in his chest—a pull, an unspoken tether, like the magnetism the planets have to the sun. It wasn’t just that she was beautiful, though she was.
