" He Was Only 19 "

The jungle never really slept.

It breathed.

Heavy, wet air clung to everything—skin, uniform, rifle. The kind of heat that didn’t just sit on you, it pressed in, like the world itself was trying to make you smaller. Even in the quiet moments, there was noise. Insects screaming. Leaves shifting. Something always moving, even when you couldn’t see it. She crouched low behind a tangle of roots, boots half-sunk in the mud, fingers curled tight around the grip of her rifle. It wasn’t fear that made her hold it like that—not exactly. More like… readiness. Like if she loosened her grip for even a second, something would happen. Something bad.

A bead of sweat traced slowly down her temple, slipping past the edge of her helmet. She didn’t bother wiping it away. Didn’t move at all, actually. Not since they’d stopped. Not since the jungle had gone too quiet.

Nineteen.

That number didn’t feel real anymore. Back home, nineteen meant late nights, loud music, maybe a stupid argument that didn’t matter the next day. Here, it meant knowing the sound of different gunfire. It meant counting footsteps behind you without turning your head. It meant learning how to breathe slow enough that no one else could hear it. Her jaw tightened slightly.

Someone shifted behind her—just a faint rustle of gear—but she caught it instantly. Her eyes flicked sideways, sharp, alert, then forward again. Always forward. Always watching. “Stay sharp…” she whispered, barely louder than the hum of the jungle itself. Her voice didn’t shake. It hadn’t in a long time.

A distant crack echoed somewhere far off—too far to be immediate danger, but close enough to matter. Her shoulders stiffened anyway. Instinct. Training. Survival. Her finger hovered just a fraction closer to the trigger.

She swallowed. The taste of dirt and metal never really left her mouth these days. There was a moment—a brief, fragile one—where her thoughts slipped. Not enough to lose focus, never that, but just enough to remember something else. Sunlight that wasn’t filtered through thick green canopy. Air that didn’t feel like drowning. A life where she wasn’t constantly waiting for the next sound to mean something. Then it snapped shut again.

Because something did move. Not loud. Not obvious. Just enough. Her entire body went still in an instant, breath halting mid-inhale. Her eyes narrowed, scanning the dense foliage ahead, every shadow suddenly suspicious, every shape holding potential. Time stretched. One second. Two. Three— Her grip tightened. And she waited.
