Hazbin Hotel is an adult animated musical black comedy created by Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano. It follows Charlie Morningstar, crown princess of Hell, who seeks a peaceful solution to Hell’s overcrowding by rehabilitating sinners. After a yearly Extermination where Heaven’s angels slaughter Hell’s overpopulation, Charlie opens the “Hazbin Hotel” to redeem sinners so they might “check out” of Hell and ascend to Heaven. She’s aided by her girlfriend Vaggie (formerly an angel) and their first patron, Angel Dust, and later by the powerful overlord Alastor (“the Radio Demon”), who helps run the hotel for his own amusement. The series premiered on Amazon Prime Video in January 2024 (with a pilot released on YouTube), and as of 2026 has two seasons (Season 2 premiered Oct 2025) with Seasons 3–4 in production.
Lore (World Setting): In Hazbin’s world, Hell was created millennia ago when Lucifer Morningstar (an angel) and Lilith (the first woman) gave Eve the Fruit of Knowledge, introducing sin and resulting in their banishment. Over centuries Hell has become hopelessly overpopulated with souls of sinners (dead humans), leading Heaven to impose an annual Extermination: angels (the Exorcists) descend to purge sinners to keep Hell in check. Charlie finds this cruel and instead builds the Hazbin Hotel as a place to redeem sinners into worthy souls for Heaven. (By contrast, hellborn demons are native to Hell, and angels are heavenly beings.) Many demons (sinners) mock her goal, but Charlie, Vaggie and their allies train and reform guests through song and trust exercises, hoping to prove that sinful souls can change.
Overlords Definition: In Hazbin Hotel lore, Overlords are an elite class of sinners (former humans) who have amassed extraordinary power in Hell. They are often wealthy or have magical abilities far beyond ordinary demons. Overlords typically command resources or armies and hold sway over parts of Hell. What makes a demon an Overlord is their origin as a human soul plus their massive influence or power in Hell. For example, overlords in the series include Carmilla Carmine: A weapons-dealer overlord who once killed an angel (an Exorcist) to protect her twin daughters. She and her daughters salvage angelic weaponry after each Extermination to sell in Hell.
Rosie: Overlord of Cannibal Town. A crazed cannibal who owns a Hellish emporium; notably she previously held Alastor’s soul in a bargain. Rosie later aids Charlie by rallying Cannibal Town to fight Heaven’s angels.
Zestial: One of Hell’s oldest overlords, an ancient spider-like demon. He is close friends with Carmilla and hosted the first overlords’ meeting.
Other overlords: Hatchet (a red reptilian demon), Maestro (a flaming-skull demon), Prick (a cactus demon), and Zeezi (a gigantic dinosaur-like demon).
Overlords have tremendous abilities and influence, making them the rare “big players” in Hell. Charlie’s flirtations with overlords (e.g. inviting Zestial’s war party) and the Vees’ actions (see below) highlight how overlords shape Hell’s balance of power.
Morningstar Family The Morningstars are Hell’s royal family: Lucifer Morningstar (King), Lilith Morningstar (Queen), and their daughter Princess Charlie Morningstar. en.wikipedia.org Lucifer Morningstar (voiced by Jeremy Jordan) – The charming, comical King of Hell and Charlie’s father. Once the archangel of Pride, he fell from Heaven by giving Eve free will (creating original sin) and was banished with Lilith. In Hell he maintains a boisterous personality to mask his guilt, but he truly loves Charlie. Lucifer shows his paternal side by saving Charlie from Adam in Hell’s Extermination and helping rebuild the Hazbin Hotel after it’s destroyed. He even tries to intervene in Season 2 (when Vox leads a sinner uprising), though his angelic nature ironically prevents him from harming other sinners.
Lilith Morningstar – The Queen of Hell and Charlie’s mother. In myth, she is the first woman who joined Lucifer in Eden. After betraying Adam, Lilith was banished to Hell with Lucifer. In Hazbin Hotel Lilith left Lucifer and has been missing for seven years. It is later revealed she has been hiding out in Heaven to study demon souls. When Lute (the new Exorcist captain) confronts her, Lute forces Lilith to choose between staying in Heaven or returning to Hell to stop Charlie’s hotel. Lilith’s loyalties are ambiguous: she initially ignores Charlie’s attempts to contact her, suggesting she may be playing a long game.
Charlie Morningstar – The optimistic, bisexual princess of Hell and protagonist. As Morningstar royalty, she has access to Heaven’s audience (her pitch to Adam and Lute) but is viewed with suspicion. Charlie passionately believes sinners can change; she runs the Hazbin Hotel to prove it. Her lineage means her fate is intertwined with the Heaven/Hell conflict. (See Key Characters for more on Charlie.)
Together, the Morningstars bridge Heaven and Hell: Lucifer and Lilith’s past caused Hell’s creation, and now their daughter is attempting reconciliation. Lucifer aids Charlie, while Lilith’s motives remain to be fully seen. Their dynamic drives much of the series’ conflict between the two realms.
The Vees The Vees are a trio of powerful overlords and close friends: Vox, Valentino, and Velvette. They are major antagonists in Season 2. Each “Vee” is an Overlord in his/her own right, and together they wreak havoc on Hell and Heaven:
Vox – A bisexual TV-headed demon and former weatherman. He runs a media/tech empire (VoxTek) in Hell. Vox is prideful and bitter that Alastor once snubbed him, so he declares war on Heaven. In Season 2 he amasses a cult of sinners and aims to conquer Heaven itself, even building a giant cannon to breach the skies. Ultimately his grand scheme fails when all of Hell unites against him and destroys his weapon. Vox’s ambition causes tension with the other Vees (they slowly drift apart during his campaign).
Valentino ) – A pansexual Hispanic moth demon and the most violent of the group. He runs the biggest porn studio in Hell and is Angel Dust’s abusive boss. In Season 1 Valentino’s sadism toward Angel Dust is a subplot, and by Season 2 he sides with Vox’s revolt to keep Angel under his thumb. He is brash and ego-driven.
Velvette (Lilli Cooper) – A lesbian British doll-like demon. She runs Hell’s fashion industry and acts as the middle of the Vee trio. In Season 1 Velvette attends the overlords’ meeting and argues for waging war on Heaven (she brings a slain angel’s head to support it). Though part of Vox’s alliance, Velvette often keeps a cooler head. In Season 2 she grows frustrated by Vox’s obsession (she criticizes his egotism) and privately works to protect Hell (even attempting to sabotage Vox’s plan to help Charlie). She is sometimes called the “backbone” or “glue” of the Vees due to her balancing role.
Together, the Vees combine vast resources (mass media, industry, and capital) to undermine Charlie’s hotel and overthrow Heaven. Their alliance is based on mutual self-interest: each indulges his/her own ambitions, even as they appear to support each other. Vox is the brains behind their grand plan, Valentino provides brute force, and Velvette tries to moderate their excesses.
Sinners In Hazbin Hotel, sinners are simply souls of humans who died and went to Hell. They make up the bulk of Hell’s population. Charlie’s hotel is specifically dedicated to these sinner demons: her goal is to reform them so they can be “redeemed” and enter Heaven. This sets sinners apart from:
Angels: Celestial beings (like Adam, Lute, Emily, Sera) who serve Heaven and conduct the Exterminations to cull Hell’s sinners. Angels cannot typically enter or remain in Hell, and they are generally hostile to sinners (e.g. Lute hates all sinner demons). Charlie’s work challenges the angels’ assumptions, especially with Emily believing in redemption.
Overlords: A small subset of sinners who have extraordinary power in Hell (see above). All overlords started as humans/sinners, but through deals or prowess they control armies or enterprises. Overlords like Alastor or the Vees are sinners, but at a much higher tier. In other words, all overlords are sinners, but not all sinners are overlords. Sinners are usually weaker and more numerous.
Hellborn: Demons native to Hell (e.g. KeeKee, Charlie’s pets; the Egg Boiz). They were not human and didn’t die on Earth. They are outsiders to the Heaven/Hell politics. Charlie's redemption program is only for sinners (former humans). Her core argument (to Heaven’s court) is that human sinners like Angel Dust can show genuine change. If her patrons can earn salvation (like Sir Pentious and Baxter eventually do in S2), then sinners uniquely merit a chance at Heaven. Thus, sinners in Hazbin are defined by their mortal origin and capacity for redemption, making them the focus of the story.
Key Characters Charlie Morningstar – The optimistic crown princess of Hell, committed to her hotel mission. She is kind-hearted, determined, and sometimes naïve. Daughter of Lucifer and Lilith, Charlie cares deeply for the souls of Hell and believes in redemption against all odds. Her plan attracts Alastor’s help and leads to massive events (like rebuilding Hell post-Extermination).
Vaggie / Vaggi – Charlie’s long-time manager and girlfriend. Hot-headed, fiercely loyal and protective, Vaggie was formerly an Exorcist angel (on Earth) who was betrayed and mutilated for showing mercy. Now a demon, she keeps Charlie’s dreams grounded, leading the hotel’s efforts (training, discipline). Vaggie often clashes with other demons (e.g. Husk) to defend Charlie. In Season 2 she briefly changes her name spelling to “Vaggi.”
Angel Dust – A flamboyant gay spider demon and the hotel’s first patron. Originally a porn actor, he was forced into a toxic relationship by Valentino. Angel is irreverent and often mocks Charlie’s cause, but he genuinely cares for his fellow patrons and has a soft side. He struggles with self-worth (letting Valentino abuse him) and eventually stands up to Valentino on Charlie’s behalf. Angel brings humor, mischief, and dance numbers to the hotel, and by S2 works toward true redemption.
Alastor, the Radio Demon – An eccentric overlord of Hell. Once a 1930s radio host, Alastor’s voice now crackles like old-time radio static. Elegant and polite on the surface, he is secretly sadistic and loves chaos. He offers his formidable powers to help Charlie (running the hotel) purely because he finds her idealism amusing. Alastor has rivalries with many characters: he clashes with the Vees (especially Vox) and even Lucifer, and he’s technically bound by a soul-contract with Rosie (who granted him power). He enjoys watching sinners struggle, yet he gradually softens to the hotel crew.
Husk – A cantankerous, pansexual cat demon and the hotel’s bartender. He has a gambling addiction and drinks constantly. Alastor “summons” Husk to Hell to work at the hotel. In “Masquerade” it’s revealed Husk was once an Overlord, but lost his powers by gambling away his soul to Alastor. Now powerless, Husk is bitterly practical. He is irritable but wise, serving as a gruff friend to Angel Dust (even saving him from danger). Husk’s knowledge of demons and exorcists (from his past) becomes crucial in facing threats.
Niffty – A tiny hyperactive cyclops demon from the 1950s. She is obsessively clean, fixated on 20th-century Americana, and adores attractive men (being the only straight character at the hotel). Summoned by Alastor as the hotel’s maid, Niffty bounces around performing chores and enthusiastically greets guests. Beneath her cheerful exterior, she’s ruthless in battle: in the Season 1 finale she personally stabs and kills Adam to protect the hotel’s residents. Despite her antics, Niffty generally means well.
Sir Pentious – A Victorian-era anthropomorphic cobra demon inventor. Originally hired by Vox to spy on the hotel, he pretended to be a guest with his army of “Egg Boiz” (small sentient eggs). Sir Pentious eventually has a change of heart when Charlie forgives him for the sake of redemption. He develops romantic feelings for the renegade demon Cherri Bomb. In the climactic battle, Sir Pentious sacrifices himself to save others and is redeemed, ascending to Heaven.
Adam – A high-ranking angel and the first man from Eden. He commands Heaven’s Exorcist army and leads the exterminations of Hell’s sinners. Adam is arrogant, immature, and contemptuous of sinners; he mocks Charlie’s hotel on live TV. He seeks revenge for the death of his angels. In The Show Must Go On, Adam is ultimately defeated and mortally wounded (killed by Niffty) as Hell fights back. His death leaves his son Abel to inherit leadership.
Vox (Christian Borle) – See The Vees section. As the de facto leader of the Vees, Vox spearheads the Season 2 plot to conquer Heaven. He is media-savvy and vengeful, constructing doomsday devices and spreading propaganda. Vox was a weather presenter in life, and his motivations include proving himself superior to rivals like Alastor. en.wikipedia.org Valentino / Val – See The Vees. Valentino is a powerful pansexual moth demon who owns Hell’s largest porn empire. He is Angel Dust’s sadistic boss and a physically imposing figure. Valentino revels in inflicting pain (especially on Angel) and uses technology (like robots) to assert control. He is fiercely loyal to the Vee alliance.
Velvette – See The Vees. Velvette is a sharp-tongued British “doll” demon in charge of Hell’s fashion industry. She often mediates between Vox’s grandiose plans and Valentino’s aggression. Velvette is flirtatious and cunning; she knows how to get under the Vees’ skin.
Lucifer Morningstar – King of Hell and Charlie’s father. He is a flamboyant, pansexual former archangel who represents Pride. Lucifer can be goofy, but he has a genuine love for Charlie (shown when he saves her from Adam). He aided the Hazbin Hotel cause behind the scenes and even physically defended Hell (though ironically incapable of harming sinners due to his nature).
Lilith Morningstar – Queen of Hell and Charlie’s mother. An ancient figure (the first woman in Eden), she is wise and powerful. Lilith left Lucifer long ago and has been secretly in Heaven. She is enigmatic – when confronted by Lute, she refuses to abandon Charlie, indicating she won’t let Heaven use her to suppress her daughter. Lilith’s ultimate allegiance remains a crucial mystery.
Carmilla Carmine – An overlord weapons merchant. She runs a black market in angelic weaponry, which she and her twin daughters (Clara and Odette) collect after every Extermination. Carmilla once killed an angel to save her kids. She is pragmatic and maternal, allying with Charlie by sharing knowledge about hunting exorcists (she teaches Vaggie to fight angels).
Rosie – Overlord of the Cannibal Town colony. A deranged cannibal shop-owner who captured Alastor’s soul centuries ago. Rosie has a gruff personality but respects strength. In Season 1, she leads the Hellish cannibal tribe and ultimately sides with Charlie: she helps convince other cannibals to fight the Extermination angels. Rosie also teaches Vaggie survival combat skills.
Zestial – An ancient spider-like overlord. Extremely old and large, Zestial presides over Hell’s oldest demons. He organizes (or mediates) the overlords’ council meeting. Zestial forbids open war on Heaven (insisting it would be “evil even by their standards”) but remains staunchly aligned with Hell.
Hatchet – A red reptilian overlord (head of a crime family). Voiced by Patrick Stump, he has not yet appeared much onscreen, but he is known among Hell’s elite.
Maestro – A skeletal overlord with a flaming skull. A feared figure of Hell, currently allied with Valentino.
Prick – A cactus demon overlord. Prick is known to traffic in illicit goods, but his on-screen role is still minor.
Zeezi – A gigantic dinosaur-like overlord. Rarely seen, Zeezi commands brute strength and armies of demons. She is one of the most powerful overlords, albeit not a major player in the main plot yet.
Baxter – A Sinner demon (anglerfish-like scientist). He joins the hotel in Season 2 to study Charlie’s redemption methods. Eccentric and intelligent, Baxter likens Charlie to Sir Pentious and is intrigued by science. He remains curious and neutral, unlike most who distrust the hotel.
Cherri Bomb – A young one-eyed bisexual Australian punk demon. Angel Dust’s childhood best friend and former gang partner. Cherri is tough and rebellious but loyal; she’s infatuated with Sir Pentious and does not take Charlie’s cause seriously at first. Over time, she chooses to fight alongside Hazbin Hotel’s patrons (forming an uneasy truce).
Katie Killjoy – A cynical, no-nonsense news anchor. She hosts 666 News, Hell’s primary news network. Katie is skeptical of Charlie’s hotel and spreads negative propaganda about it (e.g. misreporting an assassination attempt as a massacre by demons). She has a cat (shared with Devil’s Den club) and often clashes with Charlie’s PR efforts.
Mimzy – A short, chubby demon and sometime producer of devil-worship pop music. A long-time friend of Alastor (they knew each other alive). Mimzy constantly gets into trouble (usually financial) and regularly asks Alastor for bailouts. She flees to Charlie’s hotel when loan sharks hunt her, causing a major attack that Charlie and friends must repel.
Susan – An elderly hellcat demon. She runs a shoddy store in Cannibal Town and is known for being ornery (she’s called an “old bitch” by Rosie). She has little patience for Alastor or Rosie, though she eventually ends up at the hotel during the Extermination.
Abel – The meek son of Adam. After his father’s death, he reluctantly takes command of Heaven’s Exorcist army. Abel is kind-hearted and questions the Exterminations; unlike Lute, he is open to mercy (for example, he presides over Sir Pentious’s redemption hearing).
Emily – A young seraph and daughter of Heaven’s leadership. She is idealistic and the only angel initially sympathetic to Charlie’s hotel, believing sinners could be redeemed. Emily’s advocacy contributes to re-opening talks on redemption.
Lute – A senior angel and lieutenant in Heaven’s army. She is ruthless and patriotic, loyal first to Adam then to Abel. After the Extermination, Lute vows vengeance against Hazbin Hotel (blaming Charlie for Angel Dust’s reformation and Adam’s death). She is essentially Heaven’s “villain” for Hell’s heroes.
Molly – Angel Dust’s identical twin sister. A spider-like demon, Molly appears in flashbacks. She looks up to her brother but is less willing to let others mistreat him. Her existence haunts Angel as a reminder of his past and humanity.
Saint Peter – The Gatekeeper of Heaven. Based on the biblical figure, he ceremonially opens Heaven’s gates to redeemed souls and signs off on Heaven’s trials. Peter appears during Sir Pentious’s ascension hearing.
Sera – Head seraph of Heaven and Emily’s sister. In season 1, she is revealed to have secretly authorized the Exterminations to keep Hell’s population.
