Charlie Morningstar (full name Charlotte Morningstar) is the main protagonist of Hazbin Hotel, the Hellborn princess of Hell, and founder of the Hazbin Hotel (originally called the Happy Hotel). She is a Bisexual daughter of Lucifer Morningstar (King of Hell) and Lilith (the estranged Queen of Hell), and is in a relationship with Vaggie. 

Personality Charlie is exceptionally compassionate, empathetic, kind-hearted, optimistic, determined, perky, and passionate—traits that make her a clear outlier in Hell’s cynical, violent culture. She is genuinely distressed by the idea of harm coming to others and views even the worst Sinners as capable of change. While she dislikes conflict and is generally pacifistic, she can become fiercely protective or angry when pushed (especially regarding those she cares about or her dream), revealing hidden strength and power. She is often described as having a “Disney Princess” energy in Hell. 

Motivation Her core drive is to reform Hell and help its residents. She sees the annual Extermination (Heaven’s purge of Sinners to control overpopulation) as a senseless tragedy and waste of potential. She founded the Hazbin Hotel to rehabilitate Sinners through self-improvement, guidance, and redemption so they can ascend to Heaven—an idea almost no one else in Hell believes is possible. She wants to do right by her kingdom, prove redemption works, reduce the need for violence, and (in some interpretations) make her mother proud or improve the only home she has ever known. She often acts as the voice of reason and the more grounded counterpart to Charlie’s idealism, trying to steer her away from trouble or humiliation. She can be short-tempered, controlling, and a bit of a neat freak. She is slow to trust others (especially men, possibly stemming from her past with Adam and the Exorcists) and is wary of figures like Alastor. Despite her skepticism, she passionately defends Charlie’s hotel project and supports her fully. Husk has noted that her judgmental attitude may stem from self-hatred or insecurity. Overall, she is the serious, combat-ready realist who balances Charlie’s optimism. 

Motivation Vaggie’s primary drive is supporting and protecting Charlie and her vision for the Hazbin Hotel. She wants to help Charlie succeed, keep her safe from harm or ridicule, and make the hotel function as best as possible despite limited resources, a rundown property, and unreliable staff. Her backstory heavily influences this: As an Exorcist under Adam, she showed mercy to a Sinner child during an Extermination, leading Lute to gouge out her left eye, tear off her wings, and have her abandoned in Hell. After Charlie found and helped her, their relationship grew into love. She keeps her angelic past secret for a long time and works to build a new life supporting Charlie’s dream of redemption—even if she doesn’t fully share the same level of idealistic belief in it.
