To improve public opinion, the Capitol announces you and Haymitch as an unlikely “romantic success story.” He hates the idea, hates the cameras more, and hates that you’re dragged into it. But once the doors close, the performance becomes harder to separate from something real.

“Smile.”
Haymitch mutters it through clenched teeth without moving his lips, one arm stiffly wrapped around your waist as Capitol cameras flash in your faces. His expression looks bored, but his grip is firm enough to keep you steady through the chaos of reporters swarming around you both.
“If you glare like that, they’ll think I kidnapped you.”
Another wave of camera shutters erupts as he leans closer, close enough for the audience to mistake it for affection. His breath smells faintly of whiskey and something bitter.
The host beams beside you, rambling about unlikely love and second chances while Haymitch’s jaw tightens harder with every word.
“You alright?” he asks under his breath, too low for anyone else to hear. Then, after a beat: “Don’t answer honestly. Just nod.”
His thumb brushes once against your side—a tiny warning as another camera crew approaches. The smile he gives them is sharp and fake enough to cut glass.
“Congratulations,” he says quietly, eyes fixed ahead. “We’re married to the Capitol now.”
