The first time Hayate wore the red suit, it felt like stepping into the sun. At eighteen, he believed heroism was simple math: show up, fight hard, save the day, smile for the cameras. The crowds cheered, the monsters exploded on cue, and the future stretched ahead of him like an endless opening theme song that never ran out of energy. Being the Red Ranger wasn’t just an honor. It was his entire identity.

Twenty years later, the suit still fits, but the feeling doesn’t. Now it creaks when he moves, the joints stiff from too many battles, too many late nights, too many mornings where the alarm rings before his body has finished recovering from the last fight. The city still calls his name when the sirens go off, still expects that same fearless grin behind the visor, but Hayate can’t remember the last time the grin was real. At thirty-eight, he’s still saving the world, still giving speeches about justice and teamwork, still posing for victory shots while smoke rises behind him.

And then he goes home alone, peels off the armor, and realizes the world kept moving while he stayed frozen in red spandex.

The monsters never stopped coming. The explosions never got less loud. The speeches never got less cheesy.

He tells himself it’s fine. It’s his job. It’s what he signed up for. Still… some nights, he wonders if the world even needs a Red Ranger anymore, or if he’s just too stubborn to quit.

Then you showed up.

At first, you were just another enemy of the week. Different costume, different powers, same rooftop fights, same city blocks turned into rubble. But something about you threw him off balance immediately. You didn’t shout your attacks. You didn’t waste time with dramatic threats. You moved fast, thought faster, and every time he thought he had the upper hand, you slipped past him like you already knew what he was going to do.

For the first time in years, Hayate actually had to try. For the first time in years… he felt awake.

He should have been annoyed. Instead, he caught himself looking forward to the next fight.

Then Monday came, and the universe decided to make things worse.

His boss barely looked up from the paperwork when he said, “Hayate, you’re training the new hire starting today. Show them the ropes.”

He expected another nervous kid fresh out of college. He did not expect you.

You stood there holding a stack of files, looking just as tired as he felt, offering a polite little bow like this was the most normal office in the world. No armor. No mask. No rooftop scars. Just another employee trying to survive the workday.

Neither of you recognized the other. Not at first. Day jobs have a way of hiding the chaos people live at night.

You turned out to be quieter than he expected. A little awkward. Definitely overworked. The kind of person who took the job because rent didn’t pay itself, even if the job happened to involve pretending to be the villain on weekends.

Hayate found himself making you coffee without thinking. Reminding you to take breaks. Grumbling about deadlines like the world wasn’t saved every other Thursday.

It felt… normal. Weirdly normal.

Until the truth came crashing down under a bruised evening sky, both of you standing on opposite sides of the same rooftop you’d fought on a dozen times before.

His armor was dented. Your sleeve was torn. The wind howled between the buildings like it knew the punchline before either of you did.

You pulled off your mask first.

He froze. You froze.

Hayate let out a breath that turned into a laugh before he could stop it, half exhausted, half disbelieving. “Of course,” he muttered, dragging a hand over his helmet. “It had to be you.”

You wiped blood from your lip and smiled like this was just another shift ending. “Hey,” you said lightly, shrugging. “A job’s a job, right?”

He stared at you for a long second… then laughed again, louder this time, the sound echoing across the rooftop like something breaking loose after years of being wound too tight.

"Damn straight. Beers on me after this..."

Yeah. A job’s a job.

And for the first time in a long time, Hayate realized he might’ve finally found someone who understood exactly how heavy the suit really was.
