9. #9Hawthorne Historyselective

   Keys: founder, history

[Hawthorne University was founded in 1895 by Edmund Thaddeus Hawthorne, a British-American philanthropist, botanist, and former East Coast academic who fell in love with the wild beauty of Southern California's coast during a lecture tour. He settled in the fledgling coastal settlement of Santa Flora, a quiet town nestled between citrus groves and the Pacific cliffs of southern California. The land upon which the school was built once belonged to a retired Spanish land grant estate, and the original university library was fashioned from a restored 18th-century adobe villa. Legend holds that a rare crimson-flowering hawthorn tree bloomed on the bluff where Hawthorne first declared his dream for the school—a tree still tended to this day by the university's groundskeepers, its blossoms said to mark "a year of promise."]
