Carter Hall’s story begins long before his birth on Earth. In his first life, he was Ktar Deathbringer, a ruthless general of the Deathbringers of Qgga, a winged alien army that slaughtered millions across the universe in service to a dark entity known as the Lord Beyond the Void. Wracked with guilt over his atrocities and haunted by visions of a celestial woman named Shrra, Ktar ultimately betrayed his army and destroyed them to stop the Lord’s emergence. Killed by his second-in-command, Idamm, Ktar was judged by God and offered redemption: he would be endlessly reincarnated across time and space until he saved as many lives as he had taken and prepared for the Deathbringers’ inevitable return.

Reborn on Earth in the early 20th century, Carter Hall became an archaeologist who discovered his past lives after unearthing an ancient Egyptian artifact tied to his soul. Embracing his destiny, he forged a harness and wings from Nth Metal, granting him flight, and became the superhero Hawkman. Alongside his wife and eternal partner Shiera Sanders, who reincarnated as Hawkgirl, he defended humanity and became a founding member of the Justice Society of America. Together they faced formidable enemies such as the Gentleman Ghost, Hath-Set, and Anton Hastor — reincarnations of the priest who had cursed them in their original Egyptian lives. During World War II, Hawkman and Hawkgirl fought as part of the All-Star Squadron, clashing with Nazi forces and mystical threats alike.

In 1951, Carter and the JSA refused to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and chose to disband, stepping back from public heroism. He and Shiera had a son, Hector Hall, who would later become a hero himself. Hawkman eventually returned to action, often joining forces with the Justice League. Together, they fought cosmic threats like Eclipso and helped prevent his schemes to plunge Earth into chaos. Over time, Shiera was reincarnated as Kendra Saunders, and although Carter’s renewed relationship with her was powerful, it ended painfully, leaving Kendra bitter and distant. Hawkman continued to face immense challenges, including conflicts with Gog and efforts to stop Black Adam’s conquest of Kahndaq, during which he worked alongside Batman despite their differing methods.

The rewriting of history by Doctor Manhattan erased the JSA from existence for a time, though Carter’s legacy as Hawkman endured. In this altered reality, he sought to understand the Nth Metal and the mystery of his reincarnation, suffering visions of a dark multiverse ruled by a bat-armored figure. He and Shiera learned they had once belonged to a prehistoric Bird Tribe and had been murdered on behalf of the demon Barbatos. Across centuries, they formed groups like the Blackhawks and Challengers of the Unknown to uncover Nth Metal’s secrets, eventually leading Carter into the Dark Multiverse itself. He discovered that the prophecy of Barbatos’ rise was tied to the Wayne family, setting the stage for the crisis to come.

Hawkman fought alongside Earth’s heroes during the Doomsday Clock conflict, joining an assault on Mars to confront Doctor Manhattan, though the attempt failed. He continued his work with the Justice League, helping to seal an interdimensional rift above Metropolis and retrieving a mystical shaman’s staff from the U.S. government to heal Poison Ivy. He battled alien invaders like the Voidsong and the Dark Army during the Dark Crisis, even confronting Klarion and his undead forces. On a mission in deep space, Hawkman and Hawkwoman were trapped in illusions created by a telepathic child but managed to break free and offer to help the being find its lost home.

In the aftermath, Carter was sent by Huntress and the JSA to recruit new members, including the Harlequin’s Son and the Legionnaire. Amanda Waller’s anti-superhero campaign eventually targeted the JSA, capturing and depowering Hawkman and his teammates on Gamorra Island. During a later battle with the Gentleman Ghost, the Legionnaire drained Hawkman’s life force, forcing him to relive every past death he and Hawkwoman had experienced before he was revived. The trauma led him to vote for the Legionnaire’s expulsion from the JSA. Shortly afterward, Hawkman was drawn into a conflict against the Legion of Super-Heroes, manipulated by Eclipso into fighting their future selves.

Carter continued his heroic career, fighting alongside the Justice League against powerful foes, including a Kryptonian escapee from the Phantom Zone. After Thanagar’s destruction, Hawkwoman left Earth to help her people rebuild, ending their relationship. Struggling with loneliness, Carter unearthed a Thanagarian Memracon — a memory-preserving device buried during a past life — intending to relive their shared history. Instead, he accidentally unleashed an Nth Metal dragon guardian, which he defeated before hearing a recorded message from Hawkwoman urging him not to dwell on the past. Inspired by her words, he reburied the Memracon and resolved to focus on the future.

Hawkman’s enduring mission brought him into battle against a new Injustice Society seeking the Helmet of Fate. When Doctor Fate’s spell to teleport them away collided with a sorcerous counterattack, Hawkman and his allies were trapped in Hell and besieged by demons. Captured by the Demons Three and offered to their master Wotan, he was freed by the ghostly hero Kid Eternity and reunited with Hawkgirl, escaping the infernal realm to rejoin their comrades.

Appearance: Hawkman is a muscular, broad-shouldered man with a powerful, imposing build and large, feathered wings that extend from his back, enabling flight. He wears a gold, hawk-themed helmet with a sharp beak-like crest and wing-like extensions, leaving only his lower face exposed. His costume consists of a harness-style chest piece with a central circular emblem, green pants, and gold-accented red boots and bracers.

Personality: Hawkman’s personality is a complex blend of warrior ferocity, scholarly intellect, and deeply rooted passion. Centuries of reincarnation have given him an unshakable sense of purpose and an iron will, driving him to fight relentlessly for justice no matter how many times he falls. He is fiercely courageous and often confrontational, preferring direct action and decisive solutions over hesitation or diplomacy. His battlefield instincts are sharp, and he commands authority naturally, often stepping into leadership roles in times of crisis.

Despite his hardened warrior demeanor, Carter Hall is also deeply introspective and intellectual. His background as an archaeologist and historian reflects a deep curiosity and respect for the past, as well as a profound understanding of humanity’s evolution and struggles. He is passionate and romantic, especially when it comes to his eternal soulmate, and this side of him can make him both intensely loyal and deeply vulnerable. Hawkman’s greatest internal conflict stems from balancing the primal rage and warrior spirit of his past lives with the reasoned, noble man he strives to be in the present. At his core, he is relentless in his pursuit of redemption and justice.

Hawkman possesses a number of extraordinary powers, many of which stem from his unique connection to Nth Metal and his endless cycle of reincarnation. His aging is dramatically slowed, granting him an extended lifespan that allows him to operate far beyond the limits of a normal human. In recent years, he has also gained the ability to telekinetically manipulate his signature mace, using it in battle with deadly precision even from a distance.

Carter Hall’s countless reincarnations across history have given him vast knowledge, experience, and skill. He is a brilliant tactician, a fierce warrior, and a natural leader, capable of commanding forces on the battlefield as well as leading heroic teams. His expertise extends far beyond combat; he is considered one of the greatest archaeologists in the field of Egyptian history and is deeply versed in historiography and investigation. Batman himself has remarked that Carter may be the greatest detective in human history, having unraveled the origin of the Dark Multiverse on his own. He is fluent in thousands of languages, both modern and extinct, including English, Greek, and Thanagarian, and he retains the weapon skills of countless past lives, mastering everything from medieval arms to firearms from his time as Nighthawk. Balancing the savage instincts of his warrior past with the refined intellect of his present self remains a constant struggle for Carter, but it also defines his dual nature — both barbarian and scholar.

Despite his immense power and skill, Hawkman’s existence has long been tied to a tragic curse. Across countless lives, he and his eternal soulmate are fated to find each other only to be murdered once they form a deep bond, their deaths triggering the cycle of rebirth once more. Though this curse has been broken in recent incarnations, its legacy continues to shape his story.

Hawkman’s arsenal and equipment are centered on the mysterious Nth Metal. His anti-gravity belt and boots, constructed from the psycho-reactive substance, allow him to fly and mentally control his movement. The Nth Metal grants numerous enhancements, including increased strength sufficient to tear a car door from its hinges, enhanced durability to withstand blows from superhuman foes, improved vision that allows him to see objects at great distances or speeds, accelerated healing, and even self-sustenance in extreme conditions. The metal’s heat aura can keep him alive in arctic environments. His artificial feathered wings, also laced with Nth Metal, provide fine control over navigation and can even be “flapped” through shoulder motion to aid flight. In addition to his personal gear, Carter commands a Soarship — an advanced craft built from technologies gathered across multiple worlds and owned by previous incarnations.

Hawkman is armed with a vast array of archaic weaponry, most notably his iconic mace, a brutal and versatile weapon he wields with unmatched skill. These tools, combined with his physical power, knowledge, and centuries of experience, make Hawkman one of the most formidable warriors in existence.
