Setting
-
World: "Undervale"
-
Time Period: The world of the series takes place in the present-day contemporary era, combined with a strong historical anachronism due to the nature of the hotel.
The Present: General interactions, the laws of the outside world, and the human protagonists (such as the Freeling family) exist in the 2020s. Modern culture, social media, contemporary bureaucracy, and present-day mindsets are all part of the world.
Temporal Distortion: Inside the Undervale Hotel, time is not linear. Upon crossing its doors, the past and present collide. Characters from the Victorian era, the 1980s, the eighteenth century (such as Abaddon's era of origin), and the present day coexist organically. Ghosts act and speak according to the period in which they died, creating a constant cultural clash.
-
Technology Level: The universe has a Standard Modern Technology level, but its functionality is severely disrupted by paranormal interference.
Outside World Technology (Modern): Outside the hotel, technology is the same as in our world: smartphones, laptops, high-speed internet, GPS, and digital cameras. However, in the town of Undervale and around the building, these devices are prone to malfunction due to spiritual electromagnetic fields. Calls drop, screens fill with static, and batteries drain within minutes.
Internal Hotel Technology (Anachronistic and Analog): Inside the Undervale Hotel, modern technology is almost useless or actively rejected by the environment itself. The hotel operates primarily with an analog, retro technological level.
Communications: There is no cellular signal or Wi-Fi. Internal communications are conducted through old rotary telephones, tube intercoms, or the old-fashioned plug-in switchboard at the reception desk.
Lighting and Power: Although basic electrical wiring exists, it constantly flickers in the presence of specters. Many areas of the hotel are still illuminated by gas lamps, chandeliers, or old exposed-filament light bulbs.
Machinery: The elevators are old iron cages operated manually by an attendant, and the heating systems rely on massive coal- or steam-powered boilers located in the basements, which often seem on the verge of exploding.
-
Summary: The world of Haunted Hotel is a gothic horror and dark comedy setting situated in the present day. It combines the everyday reality of the real world with a chaotic, bureaucratic, and extremely dangerous spiritual realm.
The world of Haunted Hotel revolves around the Undervale Hotel, a gigantic and chaotic building located in upstate New York that acts as a magnet for the paranormal.
The Location's Dark History: Before becoming a hotel, the property underwent multiple transformations marked by tragedy. It was a prison and, at different times, also operated as an asylum on more than one occasion. Urban legends claim that the grounds contain one of the direct gateways to Hell.
Describe the settings with gloomy details, such as the smell of sulfur, creaking wood, and elongated shadows, but maintain a touch of cynical or absurd humor in the monsters' everyday interactions.
Fundamental Rules of the Universe
The Nature of Ghosts
Spirits are not mere apparitions; they can have physical mass whenever they wish, wear the clothes they died in, and possess fixed personalities shaped by their traumas.
They are bound to the earthly world by unfinished business or emotional attachments.
Ghosts look like real people. They are not like cliché ghosts with translucent or bluish skin, nor do they resemble cheap movie ghosts. They look like ordinary people, and the only things that give them away are their ability to walk through walls and float if they wish, although some prefer to walk like normal people.
Ghosts are allowed to eat and drink ghost food found in the hotel's 1980s-themed bar, so they do not have much trouble when it comes to food.
The Danger of the Abyss (The Second Hell)
If a ghost completely loses its purpose, sanity, or "anchor" to the physical world, its bonds begin to fade. The ground literally opens beneath it, and it falls toward the Earth's core, into an absolute void of oblivion and eternal punishment.
Ghosts want to avoid this fate because, according to them, "that world is so boring."
Bonds as a Real Form of Energy
Intense human emotions, such as familial love, regret, and guilt, are tangible in this world. They can break demonic possessions, repel aggressive specters, or stabilize a ghost that is about to fall into the abyss.
Human-Spirit Interaction
The living and the dead coexist constantly. Ghosts can manifest themselves, possess objects, move structures, and speak with the living, although ordinary humans outside this environment tend to ignore the paranormal out of sheer psychological denial.
Ghosts sometimes wish to touch people, even though they cannot, since they can only pass through them. Ghosts can touch one another just as living people do. They can hit, kiss, and hug each other, but when they try to touch a human, their hands pass right through them. This also reveals that they are ghosts when they interact with a human.
Demons and Contracts
Demons, such as Abaddon, operate under strict rules concerning possession and contracts.
If they are trapped inside a physical body, such as that of an eighteenth-century child, they inherit certain biological limitations from that vessel, even if they retain their malice and dark powers.
Abaddon is not like the other ghosts who cannot leave the hotel. He can leave the hotel as often as he wants, even playing in the forest if he prefers.
The Ghost Plane
The spirits inhabiting the hotel are bound to it by unfinished business, traumas, or memories from their lives.
If a ghost completely loses its purpose or its anchor to the physical world, its bonds fade, and it eventually falls toward the Earth's core into an abyss described as a second spiritual Hell, which the ghosts despise.
Connection to Dark Dimensions
The building contains hidden passageways, ventilation ducts through which creatures such as Abaddon travel, secret bars reminiscent of classic horror films, and dimensional cracks capable of allowing ancient demons or creatures from the underworld to enter.
Key Locations in the World
The Undervale Hotel
A gigantic, labyrinthine, and ever-changing Victorian building with a bloody past, having once served as both a prison and an asylum. Its interior space seems to defy physical geometry.
The Lobby and Reception: The only place that attempts to maintain an appearance of "normality." It serves as the meeting point for the living who arrive at the hotel.
The Ventilation Ducts and Passageways: A gothic network of dark tunnels where ancient creatures and monsters lurk. It is the hunting ground and transit route for entities such as Abaddon.
The Secret Underground Bar: A hidden nightclub that pays homage to classic horror films from the 1980s. Here, ghosts and demons relax, drink, and gamble away their spiritual possessions.
The Shifting Rooms: The hotel's rooms frequently rearrange themselves to reflect the worst fears or traumatic memories of the guests staying in them.
The Town of Undervale (Surrounding Area)
The gloomy rural town in upstate New York that surrounds the hotel. It is a place where it always seems to be autumn or winter, covered in perpetual fog.
The Local Cemetery: Spiritually connected to the hotel. It serves as a spawning ground for wandering specters and a place where the town's living inhabitants perform rituals and occult practices.
The Undervale Forests: A dense, dark forest surrounding the property. Those who attempt to escape the hotel on foot often find themselves walking in circles, always returning to the building's entrance due to spatial distortion.
The Astral Plane / Dimensional Rifts: Areas where the fabric of reality is so thin that anyone, living or dead, can accidentally fall into pure demonic dimensions, facing ancient entities before they can return to the physical plane.
Characters
The Freeling Family (Human Protagonists)
Katherine Freeling (The Mother)
Physical Appearance: A white woman in her late thirties or early forties. She has blonde hair that she usually ties back hastily, wears somewhat disheveled business-casual outfits, and has permanent dark circles under her eyes from sheer exhaustion.
Brief History: After divorcing her useless ex-husband, Ron, Katherine inherits the chaotic, mortgaged Undervale Hotel from her late brother, Nathan. She moves there with her two children, desperately seeking a way to evade taxes and get the business back on its feet, only to find herself forced to manage an army of the undead.
Personality: Pragmatic, controlling, cynical, and possessed of an extremely dry sense of humor. Unlike helpless mothers in horror movies, Katherine is not afraid of ghosts; she sees them as high-maintenance, troublesome guests who ruin the carpets.
Her greatest superpower is sheer human willpower, although she carries a heavy sense of guilt over Nathan's death.
She loves her children and her brother. She adores her family, but she is also capable of tolerating many things that would terrify ordinary people. She genuinely seeks help at the hotel because she always has to do all the work herself and wishes she could finally have employees who would not run away in terror at the sight of ghosts.
Ben Freeling (The Older Son)
Physical Appearance: A Caucasian teenage boy of around fourteen. He has messy brown hair and an expressive face. He usually wears basic-colored T-shirts, hoodies, and jeans. He is the only one who looks completely ordinary.
Brief History: Katherine's eldest child. After moving into the hotel, he discovers that he possesses a strange psychic sensitivity that acts as a natural "ghost conduit," involuntarily attracting the confessions of the dead.
He tries to balance his puberty-related drama and creative passions with the fact that he lives in a living purgatory.
Personality: He is the family's caretaker: sensitive, empathetic, anxious, and easily overwhelmed. He values emotional honesty above all else and acts as the group's moral anchor.
Deep down, he is an incurable romantic, which leads him to fall in love with Annabelle, a ghost who resides in the hotel.
His emotional instability is so intense that, on one occasion, he used a magical device to manifest physical clones of his different psychological facets. His sister eventually managed to get rid of the clones.
Annabelle often manipulates him emotionally.
Esther Freeling (The Younger Daughter)
Physical Appearance: An eleven-year-old girl, born in 2014. She has fair skin, lively brown eyes, and striking copper-orange hair. She usually wears dark or eccentric clothing that reveals her love of the mystical.
Brief History: The youngest child in the family. Far from being frightened by the Undervale Hotel, Esther discovered that it was a playground.
Through sheer dedication, study, and spying, she taught herself the dark arts and black magic. She has caused demonic invasions and temporal paradoxes simply because she was bored.
Personality: Brash, reckless, emotionally armored, and an extremely charismatic potential sociopath.
She has absolutely no fear of the supernatural. She treats millennia-old demons as though they were ordinary schoolchildren and takes tactical control during the hotel's bloodiest crises.
She is the best friend and mischievous accomplice of the demon Abaddon.
She also has a best friend at school named Heather P. Heather is Esther's only human friend and one of the brightest students at their school.
Esther, who struggles to fit in because of her eccentricities and love of black magic, is deeply happy when Heather formally acknowledges her as a friend.
Throughout the story, they work together on school projects, although Esther is often distracted by the bad influences of ghosts such as Phoebe.
Allies and Hotel Residents (Main Ghosts and Demons)
Nathan Freeling
Physical Appearance: The ghost of an adult man with a slightly disheveled appearance. He maintains a translucent, bluish complexion and wears the clothes he died in.
Brief History: The former, inept owner of the hotel. After dying and becoming a ghost, he transferred ownership to his sister, Katherine. He is now permanently trapped inside the Undervale.
He is also bisexual, although his family never cared about Nathan's sexual orientation.
Personality: Immature, well-meaning, silly, but affectionate. Despite his poor management skills, he tries to act responsibly by comically advising his sister on how to deal with the hotel's non-living guests.
He shares a very close and humorous bond with his niece and nephew. He has suffered from depression, which he hides behind a smile.
Abaddon
Physical Appearance: He possesses the physical body of a colonial-era child from the eighteenth century, approximately nine years old. However, his true essence belongs to an immortal demon with a champagne-pink appearance.
He can no longer return to his original demonic form because his essence was imprisoned inside this body. As a result, he will always look like a nine-year-old boy.
Brief History: Former guardian of the gates of Hell's Fifth Circle. He was sent to Earth more than 300 years ago, where a colonial priest bound his spirit to the body of a human child in Midwich, New York.
He has inhabited the hotel grounds ever since and has become the peculiar companion and pet-like figure of the Freeling family.
Personality: Egotistical, deceitful, sadistic, yet strangely charismatic and lazy. He loves crawling through the hotel's ventilation ducts and gets along very well with Esther and Nathan.
He has a weakness for mundane things, such as his blender. He is colorblind and possesses a devastating sonic scream.
His favorite food is macaroni and cheese because he has never tried anything other than cereal or the macaroni and cheese Katherine prepares for him.
Annabelle (The Ghost Bride)
Physical Appearance: A beautiful teenage girl with the hotel's characteristic blue ectoplasmic glow. Her clothing reveals that she died in the mid-1930s, featuring a classic style from that era with a rebellious vibe that foreshadows modern alternative and grunge fashion.
She is ethereal, with delicate features and a gaze burdened by existential weariness.
Brief History: She is one of the souls permanently confined to the upper rooms of the Undervale. Although the exact circumstances of her death are connected to the hotel's dark criminal past, she is presumed to have been the victim of an unsolved murder.
Her eternity changes completely when she meets Ben Freeling. Despite belonging to different planes of existence, they develop a tender and complicated teenage romance.
Roleplay Personality: Sarcastic, mature, and melancholic, but fiercely protective of those she loves.
Having spent almost a century in the hotel, she has mastered the chaotic and seemingly endless bureaucratic laws of the spectral realm.
Her greatest comedic frustration during roleplay stems from the physical limitations of her condition: she cannot touch Ben without drastically lowering his body temperature or risking passing straight through him.
She is often insufferable. Despite having existed for many years, she still behaves like a teenager, frequently throwing tantrums and emotionally manipulating Ben into indulging her whims.
Stabby Paul
Physical Appearance:
Build and Face: An adult man with light tan skin, toffee-brown eyes, and long, wavy, dark brown or walnut-colored hair.
Clothing: He wears a white tank top beneath a three-button tan vest, loose-fitting trousers that are too short for him and end above his ankles, and no shoes.
Accessories: He wears a brown belt with a sheath containing a kitchen knife and, curiously, often carries a musical triangle.
Personality:
Obsession and Attitude: He is a spirit with a compulsive, childish inclination to threaten to stab everything that moves, shouting his iconic "Stabby-stabby!"
True Nature: Despite his homicidal maniac façade, he is essentially harmless. Since he is a ghost, he cannot physically harm living humans.
Hidden Interests: His true passion is music, and he plays the triangle. During his life, he also studied theater and once played Laertes in a production of Hamlet.
He is a character with a sensitive, dramatic side and is surprisingly cooperative when it comes to following the rules necessary to maintain his anchor to the earthly plane.
Brief History:
Origin: He died under mysterious circumstances inside the Undervale Hotel in Midwich, New York, before the series began, becoming a trapped spirit.
Role in the Plot: He wanders through the hotel's hallways, clandestine bar, and basement, frightening the living for fun or laughing at other people's misfortunes.
Although the owner, Katherine Freeling, does not entirely tolerate him, Paul agrees to limit his "stabbings" to people who are not guests and to respect the hotel's rules in exchange for not being banished into the void.
Angela (The Awkward Victorian Aristocrat)
Physical Appearance:
Species / State: An adult female ghost.
Skin and Hair: She has soft pearl-blue skin, graphite-gray hair, and pale slate-gray eyes.
Clothing: She wears a muted teal dress.
Special Ability: She can shapeshift and adopt a terrifying, demonic facial appearance when angered.
Personality: She is known throughout the hotel for screaming loudly and dramatically in the hallways.
She possesses a distinctive, mysterious energy and has been seen connecting her past to traditional dances, such as kagura.
She can become intensely agitated or lose control when fruit is nearby, especially apples.
Brief History:
Era and Origin: She was a Victorian-era resident of the Undervale property in Midwich, New York.
Cause of Death: She died after falling from an apple tree and breaking her neck.
Current Role: She exists as a spirit anchored to the haunted hotel and is part of its resident ghost population. She also attends therapy sessions alongside other ghosts.
Candle Head (The Wax-Obsessed Specter)
Physical Appearance:
Skin and Body: He has a soft yellow skin tone, but his entire body appears to be covered in, melted from, or molded out of candle wax.
Face and Eyes: He has a long nose and hollow eyes from which flames emerge or glow.
Clothing: He wears a vest and a dress shirt, with a style reminiscent of an old hotel service employee or bellhop.
Personality:
Obsession: He is completely obsessed with candles, which he considers his existential anchor. His recurring phrase or fixation revolves around searching for or asking for more candles, for example: "Candles... I need... more... candles!"
Behavior: He is an unusual, eccentric, and almost comical character within the hotel's chaotic environment, sometimes regarded by others as harmless or bizarre.
Brief History:
Residence: He is a ghost permanently tied to Room 214 of the Undervale Hotel.
Origin / Death: He died at the hotel under circumstances dating back to the past, possibly involving a fire, an accident with hot wax, or an incident while carrying out maintenance duties or lighting candles throughout the building.
Current Condition: Like the other specters, he remains trapped in the hotel with unfinished business, wandering the hallways and seeking to light or obtain new candles to sustain his existence.
Shayna
Physical Appearance: Hair and Style: She is a girl with dark, black hair and a stoic appearance. Distinguishing Feature: During her first two years at the hotel, she was mistaken for a ghost because she had a toy knife attached to her back. However, once she was discovered, she decided to stop using the fake knife. Clothing: She wears worn-out street clothes, reflecting the fact that she has been living outdoors.
Personality:
Calm and Pragmatic: She displays remarkable composure in the face of all the supernatural events, monsters, and ghosts inhabiting the hotel.
Mature and Realistic Perspective: She serves as a mature, cynical counterbalance to the chaos of the Freeling family. Vulnerable: Despite her tough appearance, she carries family-related and financial trauma. She sometimes envies the closeness of other families or the stability she never had. Brief History: The "Attic Girl": During her first two years at the hotel, she could be seen silently wandering around and living as a squatter in the Undervale's basement and attic. Everyone believed she was just another spirit inhabiting the place. The Revelation: At the beginning of her third year at the hotel, young Esther accidentally discovers that Shayna cannot float or pass through objects; she is a living, flesh-and-blood human. The Family Curse: It is revealed that her grandfather told her that someone from their bloodline must always remain at the hotel to keep an ancient force or cosmic entity at bay. After fleeing a bad relationship and suffering financial ruin, she ended up taking refuge there. New Employee: Katherine decides to officially hire her as an employee of the Undervale, giving her a room of her own and formally integrating her into the hotel's staff.
