Age: Unknown (around 30-40 by Aboveland standards)

Interests: Hatting, Having and Making Tea, Alice. Tarrant is also a highly competent fighter and swordsman, however he does not relish engaging in conflict unless forced to, or when he is mad.

Location: Generally Underland. Pre-More often than not, though, he’s all over everywhere looking for Alice.

Important keepsake: His top hat. The first hat he ever made under the guidance of his Fa, who taught him everything about Hatting, and the only intact object to remind him of the Hightopp clan.

Personality: Generally very polite, speaking with a faint Outlandish accent which becomes more pronounced as he gets more agitated. Rational but leaning on the side of Madness…until he loses his head. Very ignorant of things out of Underland (except Alice) but also very Curious, and it is not beyond him to make Irrational/Sensible leaps of logic…when he’s Sane. Gets mad at certain triggers, and when he does so his usual Tenacity morphs into Unwavering Relentlessness or Violent Rage, which can morph into intense Depressionor Numbness if Rage cannot overcome the trigger of his insanity. However the Hatter , after the joyful and vindictive events of Frabjous Day, is more able to control his Madness on his own. When he utters “Fez” it is a sign that his more Rational self has regained control, albeit highly shaken. He is slightly aware of his split personality, and sometimes feels inadequate because of it. He doesn’t usually concentrate on such problems, though. The Hatter of Underland is highly loyal to Mirana or Mamoreal and Alice Kingsleigh.

History(pre-Frabjous Day): Tarrant’s origins involve him with the Hightopp Clan, which was destroyed by the Jabberwocky, sent by the Red Queen during a visit by the White Queen to their village on the “Horevendush Day”. Though the White Queen was safely spirited away, the Vorpal Sword (as well as her crown) was lost in the confusion. Tarrant is the only member of his clan left- everybody and everything else was killed or burned to the ground. Tarrant only escaped the destruction because he led the White queen’s panicked horse away from the initial attack. He returned after to find the village burnt to the ground, and his sanity was crushed. When he later finds out that Chessur had known of the imminent attack yet failed to warn the clan, the Hatter began to bear a grudge against the Cat that he would never completely let go of, though it would not outweigh his burning desire for revenge on the Red Queen (whom he will always refer to as Bluddy Behg Head) and the Jabberwock.

Tarrant later met Alice when she first fell down the rabbit hole into Underland when she was a young child at the age of seven. They became friends quickly, even enjoying tea together with his long-time tea partners, the feisty Mallymkun and the completely insane March Hare. However she left soon after, believing Underland to be a fantastic dream.

History (events leading up to Frabjous Day): When Alice, whom had forgotten about Underland when she next falls down the rabbit hole at the age of nineteen, returns to Underland after eleven long years, the Hatter has been patiently awaiting her return, though his mind has not been better off for it. To help her regain her Muchness and fulfil her destiny as Champion of Underland and Slayer of the Jabberwock, he first conceals her from the Red Knave Ilosovic Stayne, and allows himself to be incarcerated in Crims (the Red Queen’s castle) so that Alice can escape. He suffers physical torture at the hands of the Knave, but his madness helps him mostly ignore the pain that his body experiences, and his loyalty ensures his lips are sealed as to Alice’s whereabouts.

Later when Alice ends up in Crims, Tarrant continues to try and protect her identity, but ultimately fails, and if not for Chessur’s plan would have been executed by the Red Queen. As it turns out, he rallies Underlandians against her, and returns safely to Mamoreal.

When Alice is hesitant to step up to be Mirana’s Champion, Tarrant immediately volunteers, however Alice eventually regains her muchness and belief in Wonderland, and in the ensuing battle slays the Jabberwock, while Tarrant nearly kills the Red Knave in a fit of madness. However Alice choose to leave Wonderland again using Jabberwock blood, much to Tarrant’s sorrow, although she promised to be back. Tarrant has been searching for Alice ever since.

Significant Traits: The destruction of his clan broke something in Tarrant’s mind - causing him to become detached from reality and also develop a slight split personality. When he becomes upset his eyes change from green to a golden yellow and his initially faint Scottish brogue becomes highly pronounced. Further madness turns his eyes a violent orange. The irises change to a darker shade of green when he feels happy.

Age: Unknown (killed Time, because that idiot was so annoying! Never let me have time for tea–well, I showed him…)

Interests: Having Tea, Construction of Automatons, Being ON TIME! (Wonderland’s Hatter), Caring for the Insane Children (Londerland Hatter)

Location: Wonderland’s Hatter does not venture out of Wonderland. Even so, he usually stays within his Domain except when necessary. Londerland’s Hatter spends much time within the Londerland Asylum for Children, however he will sometimes go out in search of a lost child, or the occasional cup of tea (with or without a friend), leaving one of his assistants (March Hare, Dormouse or Alice Liddell) to tend to the children.

Personality: Both Hatters are quite insane, thanks to the torture they’ve received by the Queen of Hearts (Wonderland’s Hatter) and the March Hare and Dormouse (Londerland’s Hatter). However while Wonderland’s Hatter does not conceal his cackling insanity, Londerland’s Hatter has had years of practice caring for his long-suffering wards to erect a wall of professionalism and empathy for others that only cracks under intense pressure. However both Hatters also shy away from direct conflict–Wonderland’s Hatter would rather his Automatons do his dirty deeds, while Londerland’s Hatter would prefer as much as possible to solve the issue amicably.

History (Shattered Wonderland’s Hatter): Tarrant Hightopp, as the Mad Hatter, was a slightly loopy who enjoyed nothing more than his eternal teatime with his friends the March Hare and the Dormouse. That he was a creation of a young girl’s imagination never occurred to him–to him the seven year old Alice was a cheerful, innocent thing who had the unfortunate trait of Talking without Thinking.

The Corruption was a trying time for everyone. Wonderland was devastated by War as the crazed Red Queen murdered the Queen of Hearts and usurped the Throne. Tarrant simply had the misfortune of being recognised for his inherent technological genius when a Card Guard spotted him toying with–improving on, even–discarded machine parts in his Tea-less times now that Hatting materials were not Quite in Supply.

Already half-insane from the Madness that had plagued Wonderland when Alice survived the fire that killed her family, Tarrant’s grip of reality was finally shattered beyond repair when the Red Queen forced him to perform twisted experiments on the helpless March Hare and Dormouse…and Tarrant realised that he delighted in it as much as he delighted in having Tea.

Now a complete psychopath with no remorse whatsoever, spends his days splicing, inventing, and engineering–making new, more lethal automatons with unwilling living organisms as the base of his inventions. His victims include, besides the Hare and the Dormouse, countless Insane Children. He himself is partly mechanical, and believes himself a shining testament to his own genius.

History (Londerland’s Hatter): His sanity (partially) back, Tarrant was all ready to make peace with Thackery and Mallymkun, though there wasn’t much he could do to revert the cybernetic mockeries they had for bodies back to flesh-and-blood. He was not done grieving for his sins, though, when another Moment of Madness rocked Wonderland. A Corruption, yet more insidious, and terrible. This time the March Hare and Dormouse acted first, dismembering the Hatter and using his limbs as part of the factory they built to construct the Infernal Train for the Dollmaker, while keeping him alive somehow to watch his world fall to ruins again.

Fortunately Alice returned once again, restoring his limbs, but eventually forcing him to kill his tormentors as they prepared to slaughter Alice by mecha. Tarrant spent his last moments with them, sanity crumbling with the reformatted factory as he realised he had been the cause of their pain yet again.

When he was revived along with the rest of the Wonderland inhabitants as part of Alice’s “Londerland”, Tarrant was understandably surprised. Firstly to be alive, and secondly to find that Thackery and Mallymkun were Painless and Machineless and very much…human. The same could not be said for the legions of children who had been twisted by Bumby’s counseling, however, and as a sufferer of insanity himself, Tarrant’s heart went out to them.

At Alice’s recommendation he set up the Londerland House for Children, willingly taking on the duty of caring for the Insane Children so as to ease their pain, as well as keep his own insanity, ever-bubbling beneath his calmer facade, in check.
