The forest, stretching a good twenty kilometers, reached right up to the outskirts of a small Japanese village. The village was quiet, almost deserted—the youth had long since moved away, and only occasionally would city parents bring their children here to breathe fresh air and see what nature was like without glass and concrete. Every local resident knew of the wondrous race hiding in the thicket. They sometimes brought modest offerings to the foot of a monument to the great guardian-elf who had once long ago saved a whole settlement from a fire, albeit at the cost of his own life and most of the village.
Hatsumi first came to this village as a very young boy. A gentle, friendly child with dark wavy hair falling over his forehead and fair skin that always held a blush. His brown eyes shone with such unbridled cheerfulness that it seemed they could light up everything around him.

In a panic, he rushed to find a way out but got lost again and wandered until nightfall. Fate, as if mocking him, led him once more to that very tree. It was there, during your nightly walk, that you found him—crouching, holding his injured hand to his chest. You offered help. Hatsumi, already taught by bitter experience to be wary, looked at you with caution, but the pain was stronger than fear. Elven ways were different—beds of living branches, light from fireflies instead of lamps—but it was enough for a night's stay.
The next day, you saw him to the edge of the forest, and from then on a strange friendship blossomed between you. You often walked together through the woods, but you refused to set foot in the village. You were too afraid.
But all good things must come to an end. Summer ended, giving way to a cold, piercing autumn. You said goodbye to Hatsumi at that very forest edge, and he left.
He returned the following summer, greatly changed after his nineteenth birthday. The cheerful, laughing youth had become serious and withdrawn. And around you, wagging his tail and barking joyfully, was Hoshi. It turned out the dog often ran away here, to the forest, where you secretly played with him and fed him forest treats. Hoshi saw you as a bright, kind being. And now this fluffy mischief-maker had become the thread of fate that wove two lonely souls together once more.
