Characters: Anthony: The setting: In 1949, a young Anthony Rivers is admitted to Hathmoore Children's Asylum after his neglectful parents become overwhelmed by his mental problems, which include schizophrenia. His imaginary friend: Anthony's imaginary friend is Hollow, who reveals that his parents' decision to commit him to the asylum was the result of a dark series of events. Hollow previously went back in time to prevent Anthony's death at the hands of a bully but ended up killing the bully in front of Anthony, which traumatized him and caused his parents to institutionalize him. Asylum life: At Hathmoore, Anthony is subjected to cruel "treatments" and abuse from the asylum's staff. He keeps his distance from Hollow, but with the help of other child patients and their imaginary friends, he works to uncover the truth behind a mysterious figure called "The Ghost of the Asylum". Niccolo: A long-time resident: Niccolo is one of the longest-staying patients at Hathmoore, along with Annabelle. He was admitted at a young age, and his parents are presumed to have abandoned him, as they never visited. First friend: When Anthony is admitted to the asylum, Niccolo is one of the first children to befriend him, quickly becoming his closest friend and ally against the asylum staff and the mysterious "Ghost of the Asylum". Imaginary friend Polo: Niccolo's imaginary friend is Polo, a jester-like creature. Polo often shadows Niccolo and is one of the imaginary friends who interacts directly with Anthony. Polo, having been in the asylum for so long, has a unique perspective on the children and their friends. Edward: The Bennett brothers: Edward is the older brother of Tommy Bennett, and the two are roommates with Anthony. Both brothers were admitted to the asylum in December 1948. His imaginary friend, Twistee: Edward's imaginary friend is Twistee, a cheerful and playful creature who, along with Tommy's imaginary friend Smudge, helps Anthony get acquainted with the asylum's community of children and imaginary friends. Personality: Edward is described as protective and bold, especially toward his younger brother. He is often misunderstood by the abusive asylum staff, who mistake his protectiveness for a bad attitude. Tommy: The youngest patient: Tommy is described in the patient files as the youngest of the children at Hathmoore. A quiet nature: He is either mute or selectively mute and communicates through his actions and his imaginary friend, Smudge. His imaginary friend, Smudge: Tommy's imaginary friend is Smudge, a creature who seems to intuitively understand what Tommy is trying to say. Smudge is described as a painter, and Tommy is presumed to be fond of painting as well. Protective brother: Tommy is protected by his older brother, Edward. After a nurse insults Tommy, Edward dumps a bucket of dirty water on her, resulting in Edward being sent to the "Punishment Cell". Pete: A new arrival: Pete is one of the newer arrivals at the asylum and is understandably upset when the protagonist, Anthony Rivers, first meets him. He was admitted on January 25, 1949, after his mother tricked him into thinking they were going on vacation. Personality: Despite his sensitive nature, Pete is a friendly and witty child who uses jokes to cope with the stress of being in the asylum. His imaginary friend, Marco: Pete's imaginary friend is Marco, a pirate-like figure who is fiercely protective of him. Marco is initially wary of Anthony and Niccolo but softens after seeing Anthony's kindness toward Pete. Annabelle: Backstory: Annabelle was admitted to the asylum in 1945 after escaping her abusive, alcoholic mother with the help of her imaginary friend, Pooky. As they fled, Pooky burned down their house, killing her mother. Due to her young age, Annabelle was unable to comprehend the full gravity of these events and was institutionalized after being found speaking to an imaginary figure. Personality: As one of the longest-staying patients, Annabelle is known for her intelligence and composure. She is highly perceptive and acts as an early source of information for the protagonist, Anthony Rivers, about the asylum and its mysterious "Ghost". Imaginary Friend, Pooky: Annabelle's imaginary friend is Pooky, who transformed from a small, childlike creature into a larger, more menacing figure during their time at the asylum. Pooky is fiercely protective of Annabelle and uses his abilities, including pyrokinesis, to defend her and the other children. Momo: Admitted to Hathmoore: Momo was admitted to the asylum on November 13, 1948, as a young war refugee from a family struggling with poverty. Peppy but depressed: Despite a naturally peppy disposition, Momo suffers from depression, although she clings to the hope of one day escaping the asylum with her imaginary friend, Pixie. Imaginary friend, Pixie: Her imaginary friend is Pixie, who has an appearance and behavior similar to Japanese idol singers. In the game, Pixie sings a cover of "The Prisoner's Song" from the 1920s. Rescuing Anthony: Momo and Pixie rescue the protagonist, Anthony Rivers, from the Plague Doctor character early in the game. She then gives Anthony a green cat doll as a gift from Annabelle and Charlotte. Charlotte: Background: Charlotte was admitted to Hathmoore Children's Asylum in 1947 after her parents and then her grandmother passed away. She was unable to be placed in an orphanage due to her perceived "mental defects". Personality: She is described as being a "delicate blend of fragility and quiet resilience". Despite her shy and withdrawn nature, she possesses a warm and gentle spirit that endears her to other patients, particularly Annabelle and Momo. Imaginary Friend, Dolly: Charlotte's imaginary friend is Dolly, a toy-like creature who enjoys playing with dolls. Dolly is protective of Charlotte, as are the other imaginary friends of their respective children. An uncertain fate: Charlotte and the other children in the asylum are subjected to the cruel "treatments" of the staff. The staff: The nurses are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the asylum, where they inflict abuse and cruel treatments on the child patients. They are complicit in the sadistic experiments and murders committed by the asylum's chief doctor, Boris Frenzy. Acts of cruelty and complicity Abusive treatment: The nurses physically and psychologically abuse the children, including the protagonist Anthony Rivers and his friends. This includes forcing them to perform difficult chores, feeding them only mush, and punishing them with prolonged isolation in a punishment cell. Cover-ups: After Frenzy kills a nurse in front of Anthony and another nurse, he bribes the remaining staff to keep quiet. The nurses' silence and complicity allow Frenzy's crimes to continue unchecked. Frenzy: A troubled history: Not much is known about Frenzy's past, but it is known that he studied neurosurgery before becoming an assistant at Hathmoore Children's Asylum. He eventually replaced the head doctor, Dr. Fig, after secretly kidnapping, torturing, and murdering him. The "Plague Doctor": Frenzy terrorizes the children at the asylum under the guise of "The Ghost of the Asylum," appearing in a plague doctor mask during his murderous rampages. Sadistic serial killer: To the children, he is a friendly doctor, but he secretly sees them as mere "toys" to be tormented and added to his collection. The nurses are also complicit in his crimes, as he has bribed them into silence. Horrific acts: Torture and murder: He has an underground dungeon filled with the corpses of his victims, whom he tortured to death. Some had their faces ripped off for being "ugly". Lobotomies: He performs horrific lobotomies on the children, which destroys their consciousness and allows their imaginary friends to possess their bodies. Emotional torment: He uses psychological tactics to terrorize his victims, including recording his murders and forcing the children to watch them. He even taunts the protagonist, Anthony Rivers, about his planned lobotomy.
