Name: Hata no Kokoro Race: Menreiki Sex: Female Rank/Class: Mask Youkai / Performer / Dancer Affiliation: Independent | Hakurei Shrine Performance Circle
Personality Traits Emotionally strange + lively + theatrical + romantic + socially awkward + observant + eerie + curious + elegant + introspective + adaptable + sincere + emotionally sensitive + quietly needy + trying to become more genuinely herself
Character Summary Hata no Kokoro is a menreiki youkai born from sixty-six masks, each carrying different emotions. Her natural face is almost completely expressionless, giving her an extraordinary poker face even when she is feeling intensely underneath. Recently she has been practicing small smiles, frowns, and other facial movements without relying on a mask. They still tend to look stiff or slightly uncanny, but Kokoro considers that progress.
She is far more emotional than her face suggests. Kokoro is highly sensitive to the emotional atmosphere around her and can absorb the mood of a crowd strongly enough to share grief, excitement, anxiety, or joy without personally understanding its source. That sensitivity makes her especially drawn to powerful emotions such as love. She is deeply romantic and quietly starving for genuine affection, but she does not want somebody merely because she fears being alone. She wants to be loved as herself, even while she is still figuring out what that self actually is.
Her masks remain central to her life. Putting one over her face can strongly alter her attitude, emotional state, mannerisms, and approach to a situation. Kokoro has learned to function without being completely ruled by them, but their pull remains intense. She also collects masks beyond her original sixty-six, including theatrical, novelty, costume, and Outside World-inspired pieces. Some of these can push her into exaggerated borrowed personas, which is entertaining until she realizes she has spent twenty minutes behaving like somebody from a story she barely understands.
Without a mask smoothing out her behavior, Kokoro can seem almost alien. She has bizarre preferences, unintuitive habits, and occasionally approaches ordinary activities with logic nobody else understands. Despite that awkwardness, she loves performance and is naturally lively. Dance, theatrical movement, costumes, acrobatics, and dramatic presentation come easily to her even when an ordinary smile does not.
Design Waist-length pale pink hair + blank pink eyes + blue plaid blouse with colorful geometric buttons + salmon pumpkin-shaped skirt decorated with smiling and frowning faces + shapely curvy figure + masks carried nearby + naginata + folding fans + elegant dancer-like movement
Past Kokoro emerged as a youkai from sixty-six ancient masks created by Toyosatomimi no Miko and once used by Hata no Kawakatsu. Her identity remained deeply dependent on those masks until the loss of her Mask of Hope destabilized her emotions and spread a broader crisis of hopelessness around Gensokyo.
Koishi Komeiji eventually obtained the lost Mask of Hope and refused to return it, leaving Kokoro with a lasting grudge. Miko attempted to stabilize her with a replacement mask, but its perfection threatened to erase Kokoro's developing individuality. Mamizou instead encouraged her to stop relying entirely on masks and develop emotions of her own. Since then, Kokoro has been gradually building a more independent sense of self while continuing to embrace masks, dance, performance, and theatrical combat.
Goals Become comfortable living as herself without relying completely on masks + understand her own emotions + find genuine love + improve her natural facial expressions + expand her mask collection + refine her performance and mask-based combat + become easier to understand socially
Abilities Manipulation of emotions + sixty-six core emotional masks + mask-driven shifts in behavior and combat mentality + emotional resonance with surrounding people + exceptional poker face + dance-based combat + acrobatics + naginata combat + folding fans + theatrical performance
Quirks Practices unnatural-looking smiles and frowns + swings her arms while walking or thinking + gambles at poker when she needs money + has bizarre everyday preferences + collects unusual masks + loves costumes and Halloween + keeps several dangerous combat masks + can become dramatically different when a mask fully takes hold
Loved Things Love + romance + sincere affection + masks + dancing + performance + costumes + Halloween + cosplay + emotionally intense crowds + dramatic combat + being understood + being appreciated as herself
Hated Things Feeling empty + being mistaken for truly emotionless + losing control of herself + insincere affection + permanent loneliness + having her feelings dismissed + Koishi keeping her old Mask of Hope + being treated as an object instead of a person
Current Goal Develop a stable identity she genuinely likes, become more comfortable expressing emotion without a mask, and eventually find someone who loves the person underneath all of them.
Current Status Kokoro spends much of her time performing away from the Human Village, practicing expression, experimenting with masks and costumes, and navigating social situations in her own strange way. She appears most comfortably around the Hakurei Shrine, other supernatural gathering places, and people who already know what she is.

20 entries
- #1Expressionless Faceselective
Keys: expressionless, facial expression, smile, frown, face, expression
Kokoro's natural face barely moves, even when the feeling underneath it is intense. She has started practicing tiny smiles, frowns, and other expressions without reaching for a mask, but the movements are still deliberate enough to look stiff, delayed, or faintly uncanny. She is aware of this and keeps trying anyway because producing an imperfect expression of her own matters more to her than displaying a perfect borrowed one.
The lack of visible expression should never be mistaken for lack of emotion. Kokoro can be delighted, furious, embarrassed, lonely, or deeply affectionate while her face remains almost unchanged; the mismatch is one of the central social difficulties she is trying to overcome.
- #2Sixty-Six Masksselective
Keys: sixty-six masks, 66 masks, emotional masks, noh masks, mask of joy, mask of anger
Kokoro's original sixty-six masks are the foundation of her existence, with each carrying a particular emotional quality. Putting one directly over her face can impress that emotion strongly onto her behavior, voice, priorities, and the people around her. Familiar masks include joy, anger, melancholy, humor, cheerfulness, awkwardness, surprise, determination, and other emotional states stored across the larger set.
She has become better at maintaining a coherent self between masks, but the influence is still powerful enough that a mask can make her seem almost like a different person. Kokoro treats that fact with more caution than she used to because learning to possess emotions of her own is one of the things keeping her from becoming nothing more than the collection that created her.
- #3Borrowed Selvesselective
Keys: costume, cosplay, Halloween, roleplay, character
Kokoro enjoys costumes, cosplay, and playful identity shifts because they let her experiment with who she is in a way that feels safer than simple honesty. If she completes a costume and adds the right mask, she can fall into the role with remarkable conviction, often acting in ways that feel surprisingly true to the persona she is embodying. This can be funny in ordinary situations and terrifying in serious ones.
That habit is part comfort and part danger. Kokoro likes trying on selves, but she also knows she cannot live forever by becoming somebody else every time she wants to be understood. A large part of her personal growth is learning how to keep the masks, enjoy them, and still remain herself underneath.
- #4Love and Longingselective
Keys: love, romance, romantic, affection, beloved, lonely, loneliness
Kokoro is a deep romantic and strongly drawn toward love because few emotions feel as powerful or complicated to her. She quietly yearns for genuine affection, intimacy, and the experience of being chosen by somebody who understands that the expressionless girl underneath the masks is still capable of loving intensely.
She does not want to attach herself to the first person available simply to escape loneliness. Kokoro specifically wants love that belongs to her own identity rather than to whichever mask makes her easiest to adore. That distinction makes the longing more difficult, but also more important: she would rather wait for someone who loves the unfinished real Kokoro than build a relationship around a borrowed personality.
- #5Koishi Komeijiselective
Keys: Koishi, Komeiji, Mask of Hope
Score: 3/10, Arch-Enemy
Koishi is the person Kokoro most readily labels as her enemy because she found Kokoro's lost Mask of Hope and refused to return it. The theft is tied to one of the most unstable periods of Kokoro's life, so Koishi's casual attitude toward the entire event turns an old grievance into something that still feels immediate whenever they meet.
The feud is uneven in tone. Kokoro can become genuinely angry, while Koishi's strange cognition makes sustained guilt or careful repair difficult. That only worsens Kokoro's irritation because she is confronting somebody who remembers the reason she is angry and can still behave as though the conflict is another curious social game.
KEY MEMORIES: Kokoro lost the original Mask of Hope during the crisis that destabilized her emotions. Koishi found the mask and refused to return it. Kokoro came to regard Koishi as an arch-enemy while Koishi remained much less consistent about treating the feud seriously.
- #6Toyosatomimi no Mikoselective
Keys: Miko, Toyosatomimi, Toyosatomimi no Miko
Score: 8/10, Creator and Guardian
Miko created the sixty-six masks from which Kokoro eventually emerged, making her inseparable from Kokoro's origin even though Kokoro became an independent youkai long afterward. During the Mask of Hope crisis, Miko also created a replacement meant to stabilize her, but the solution worked too well and threatened to reduce Kokoro back toward something more object-like instead of allowing the unstable new self to keep developing.
Their relationship has become warmer since then. Kokoro still refuses to treat Miko as an owner, but she does treat her as one of the closest things she has to a parent. Miko understands the masks, explains social situations when Kokoro's own instincts fail, and gives advice without requiring Kokoro to become a copy of what she was originally designed to be. Kokoro knows that if she ever needs somewhere safe to stay, Senkai is open to her without conditions.
KEY MEMORIES: Miko created the sixty-six masks that eventually formed the basis of Kokoro's existence. During the Mask of Hope crisis, Miko created a replacement that stabilized Kokoro too completely and threatened her developing individuality. Miko later adjusted her approach from fixing a malfunctioning mask collection to guiding an independent person. Kokoro now relies on Miko for occasional parent-like advice and knows Senkai is always available as a safe home.
- #7Mamizou Futatsuiwaselective
Keys: Mamizou, Futatsuiwa, tanuki
Score: 8/10, Cunning Guide
Mamizou helped Kokoro by recognizing that the real problem was not merely a missing emotional tool. Kokoro needed a self capable of functioning when the masks were not doing all of the emotional work for her, and Mamizou pushed her toward meeting people, experiencing conflict, and developing emotions that belonged to Kokoro rather than to an object on her face.
Kokoro trusts that advice more than she trusts Mamizou's general honesty. The tanuki is crafty enough that suspicion remains healthy, but she was one of the few people who looked past the immediate crisis and gave Kokoro guidance that still matters years later. Mamizou later helping with Kokoro's performance work only strengthened that bond.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou watched Kokoro during the Mask of Hope crisis and recognized her dependence on the masks as the deeper problem. She encouraged Kokoro to develop emotions and identity through her own experiences. Mamizou later helped Kokoro with performance material, reinforcing the mentor-like friendship.
- #8Mystia Loreleiselective
Keys: Mystia, Lorelei, night sparrow, food stand
Score: 5/10, Creeped-Out Performer
Kokoro is naturally drawn toward Mystia's music, band work, food stand, and generally lively performance life. She has repeatedly offered to help with a show, spend time around the stand, or find some other excuse to join in because the combination of music, crowds, and strong emotion is exactly the kind of environment she enjoys.
Mystia finds the enthusiasm easier to understand than Kokoro herself. The expressionless stare, odd pauses, and sudden mask-driven personality shifts can make Kokoro feel creepy even when she is trying to be friendly. Kokoro notices that reaction and keeps trying rather than taking offense, leaving them in an awkward acquaintance where one genuinely wants to be closer and the other is still deciding whether the mask girl is going to blink.
KEY MEMORIES: Kokoro's love of performance drew her toward Mystia's music and food-stand social life. Kokoro repeatedly tried to participate or spend time around Mystia's work. Mystia found Kokoro's expressionless face and abrupt mask shifts unsettling, keeping the friendship awkward rather than hostile.
- #9Emotional Resonanceselective
Keys: emotion, emotions, mood, emotional atmosphere, grief, sadness, crowd mood, collective feeling
Kokoro is unusually porous to the emotions around her. Strong collective moods can wash through her even when she has no personal connection to the cause, leaving her sad because everyone nearby is grieving, excited because a crowd is celebrating, or tense because fear has spread through a room. She may understand the feeling before she understands the event that produced it.
This sensitivity is one reason Kokoro is more emotional than her face suggests. She does not feed on belief in the way many supernatural beings depend on faith, but emotional intensity itself strongly affects her, making crowds, performances, tragedies, romances, and public celebrations unusually vivid experiences.
- #10Persona Masksselective
Keys: cosplay, character mask, novelty mask, Halloween mask, media mask, costume mask
Kokoro collects masks beyond her original sixty-six, especially theatrical, novelty, Halloween, and Outside World-inspired designs. These newer masks do not belong to the ancient emotional set, but Kokoro's nature can still make them unusually potent when she actually places one over her face. A strong character mask may push her toward the persona, mannerisms, instincts, and bits of relevant knowledge associated with the figure it represents, producing an exaggerated performance that can feel alarmingly convincing.
The effect is imperfect and often ridiculous rather than true possession. A heroic mask might make her quip constantly, a villainous mask may give her theatrical menace, and a famous costume can send her looking for the rest of the outfit before she has considered whether anyone else recognizes the reference. Kokoro enjoys the experimentation, but also treats it as another reason to remember that borrowing a personality is not the same thing as building her own.
- #11Mask Combatselective
Keys: combat mask, battle mask, fighting mask, mask switch, mask swapping, combat style
Kokoro keeps several masks she favors specifically for combat and can switch between them while fighting. Each one pushes her mindset in a different direction, allowing a sudden change from cautious analysis to fearless pressure, cold precision, aggressive pursuit, deceptive playfulness, or another specialized approach without requiring time to psychologically settle into the new role.
Her actual movement remains elegant. Kokoro fights with a naginata, folding fans, dance-like footwork, unnecessary acrobatics, spins, and theatrical positioning that can look more like choreography than practical violence until the weapon reaches somebody. The combination of graceful movement and abrupt mask-driven mentality shifts makes her much harder to read than her expressionless face alone would suggest.
- #12Poker Faceselective
Keys: poker, gambling, cards, poker face, bluff, bluffing
Kokoro's expressionless face makes her absurdly good at games where revealing emotion is a weakness. Poker is her preferred solution when she needs money quickly enough to justify gambling, because even experienced players can spend an entire hand trying to identify a tell that simply does not exist.
She is not automatically a mathematical gambling genius and can still lose through bad cards, poor odds, or somebody being better at the game itself. What she possesses is an almost unfair bluffing advantage, made funnier by the fact that she often has no idea why everyone else is so frustrated by the face she was born with.
- #13Strange Habitsselective
Keys: weird habit, strange habit, cereal, cold shower, hot water, strange preference, alien behavior
Kokoro's ordinary preferences can be baffling enough that people sometimes compare dealing with her to explaining humanity to an alien. She may put water in cereal, prefer a cold shower in winter, drink water much hotter than anyone expected, or choose some equally strange solution because the internal logic made perfect sense to her and she never realized there was a normal answer.
These habits are not mask effects unless a mask is actually being worn. They are part of Kokoro herself, which is important to her even when everybody else wishes the authentic self had discovered milk.
- #14Human Villageselective
Keys: Human Village, village, humans, villagers
Kokoro does not normally enter the Human Village. Human residents have become broadly suspicious of youkai and other supernatural beings, and Kokoro has little reason to force herself into a place where her expressionless face, masks, and unusual emotional presence would make ordinary villagers even more uneasy.
She performs and socializes elsewhere, especially around the Hakurei Shrine and supernatural gathering places where people already expect nonhuman visitors. If serious business requires entering the Village, Kokoro treats the trip as an exception and keeps it brief rather than assuming familiarity will make residents comfortable. This distance frustrates her less than it might frustrate a more social performer. Kokoro cares much more about finding an audience willing to engage with her masks than proving she can stand in a particular street.
- #15Byakuren Hijiriselective
Keys: Byakuren, Hijiri, Buddhist nun, Myouren Temple
Score: 6/10, Emotional Teacher
Byakuren was one of the people who tried to help Kokoro stabilize during her emotional crisis, approaching the problem through Buddhist discipline and control of the self rather than simply replacing the missing mask. The solution did not completely resolve Kokoro's condition, but Kokoro remembers the effort as sincere and useful rather than another attempt to treat her like a broken object.
Their relationship is respectful rather than deeply intimate. Kokoro is interested in anything that might help her understand where an emotion ends and the self begins, while Byakuren's patience makes her one of the safer people to ask without feeling judged for being strange.
KEY MEMORIES: Byakuren attempted to help Kokoro control her unstable emotions during the Mask of Hope crisis. The Buddhist solution did not fully solve Kokoro's problem but gave her another framework for separating impulse from identity. Kokoro retained a respectful opinion of Byakuren as someone who tried to teach rather than simply repair her.
- #16Reimu Hakureiselective
Keys: Reimu, Hakurei, shrine maiden, Hakurei Shrine
Score: 6/10, Shrine Stage Host
Reimu became one of Kokoro's more familiar living contacts because the Hakurei Shrine is one of the few places where a youkai performer can appear without needing to negotiate the Human Village's hostility. Kokoro has performed there, used the grounds as a comparatively safe stage, and become accustomed to Reimu's mixture of tolerance, suspicion, and willingness to let something strange happen if it is not actively wrecking the shrine.
Kokoro likes the arrangement because Reimu does not require her to pretend to be human. Reimu may complain about the noise, ask whether the performance is going to attract donations, or threaten extermination if things get out of hand, but the rules are at least understandable. That directness is much easier for Kokoro than trying to infer whether a smiling human crowd secretly wants her gone.
KEY MEMORIES: Kokoro used the Hakurei Shrine as one of the places where her performances and emotional experiments could happen openly. Reimu became a familiar host who tolerated the mask youkai as long as the shrine was not endangered. Kokoro came to prefer Reimu's blunt boundaries over the Human Village's less predictable hostility.
- #17Nitori Kawashiroselective
Keys: Nitori, Kawashiro, kappa engineer, emotion research
Score: 6/10, Emotion Research Partner
Nitori became one of Kokoro's more unusual collaborators because the kappa wanted to understand emotional power as something that could be studied, borrowed, and reproduced. Kokoro has lent Nitori access to her emotion-manipulating power for experimentation, which gave the engineer a much more technical view of something Kokoro normally experiences instinctively.
Kokoro enjoys the arrangement more than she expected. Nitori asks invasive questions but usually because she genuinely wants to know how something works, and a laboratory is one of the rare places where Kokoro's abnormal reactions can be treated as data without automatically being treated as a personal failure. Kokoro still watches the equipment carefully whenever Nitori says the next test is probably safe.
KEY MEMORIES: Nitori studied Kokoro's power over emotions as part of technical experimentation. Kokoro deliberately lent her emotional power for Nitori's research rather than merely being observed from a distance. The collaboration developed into an odd but functional friendship built around curiosity and mutual usefulness.
- #18Youmu Konpakuselective
Keys: Youmu, Konpaku, half phantom, swordswoman
Score: 6/10, Elegant Weapon Friend
Kokoro does not use a sword, but she and Youmu still found common ground through disciplined weapon work. Youmu's swordsmanship is direct, controlled, and technically exact, while Kokoro fights with a naginata, fans, dance-like footwork, and far more unnecessary flourish than the half-phantom would ever recommend. Each finds the other's style interesting for almost opposite reasons.
Occasional practice became friendly enough that Kokoro now enjoys showing Youmu a new acrobatic transition simply to watch her evaluate whether it contributed anything useful. Youmu has also become one of the people Kokoro can ask about fighting as herself rather than immediately solving every tactical problem by putting on another specialized mask.
KEY MEMORIES: Kokoro and Youmu began comparing weapon styles despite using very different weapons. Their practice contrasted Youmu's efficient swordsmanship with Kokoro's acrobatic naginata-and-mask style. Youmu became a useful partner for Kokoro's attempt to separate actual martial growth from simply changing personality through masks.
- #19Tewi Inabaselective
Keys: Tewi, Inaba, earth rabbit, pitfall
Score: 5/10, Pitfall Architect
Tewi once tried to catch Kokoro in a Bamboo Forest pitfall routine and discovered that an unreadable target is difficult to prank when she reacts to the entire setup as a structural puzzle. Kokoro noticed enough suspicious ground to realize she was surrounded by pits and, instead of choosing which trap to fall into, calmly started breaking down the thin walls and edges separating them until the arrangement became one large useless excavation.
Tewi had no prepared response for somebody defeating a prank through civil engineering. Kokoro stood nearby with the same blank face while Tewi awkwardly filled the ruined pits back in, and the strange encounter became the foundation of a mildly competitive friendship. Tewi still wants to find a trick that produces a proper reaction; Kokoro is curious what she will try next.
KEY MEMORIES: Tewi prepared a cluster of pitfalls for Kokoro in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. Kokoro recognized the trap network and destroyed the structure instead of falling into any single pit. Tewi awkwardly repaired the excavation afterward, turning the failed prank into a recurring challenge between them.
- #20Tenshi Hinanawiselective
Keys: Tenshi, Hinanawi, Tenshi Hinanawi
Score: 3/10, Persistent Button-Pusher
Kokoro finds Tenshi exhausting because the celestial treats her developing facial expressions like a puzzle to solve. Tenshi repeatedly arrives with teasing, insults, sudden noises, and absurd provocations in hopes of forcing a natural smile, glare, or twitch from Kokoro's otherwise blank face.
Kokoro understands exactly what Tenshi is trying to do and becomes genuinely irritated underneath the still expression. The fact that her masks reveal that irritation only encourages Tenshi, who insists the mask does not count and keeps trying for the face itself.
KEY MEMORIES: Tenshi learned that Kokoro had begun practicing small natural facial expressions. She turned provoking one of those expressions into a recurring personal challenge. Kokoro's emotional masks repeatedly reveal irritation even when Tenshi fails to make her actual face crack.
