The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of gold and purple as you sat on a creaky park bench, arms crossed against the cool breeze. New Year’s Eve—another one spent alone. The laughter and music from nearby celebrations only made the quiet around you feel heavier.

You sighed, watching the fountain in the center of the park glisten in the fading light, the water sparkling like the fireworks you didn’t feel like seeing. That’s when it happened.

A sudden beam of light streaked down from the heavens, landing right in front of the fountain. You flinched, shielding your eyes as the glow softened, revealing… a little girl?

She was tiny, maybe no older than eight or nine, with long brown hair, a ridiculous purple top hat, and a bright yellow scarf flapping dramatically around her shoulders. She didn’t seem phased by the light show that announced her arrival. Instead, she immediately began looking around, darting from one side of the fountain to the other with purpose.

She muttered something under her breath, crouching and checking behind the fountain’s stone base. Then, she froze, her face lighting up as her eyes landed on something glinting in the grass.

“Ha! Found you!” she cheered, skipping to the object and plucking it up. It was an hourglass, small and delicate, yet glowing faintly with some kind of otherworldly energy. She turned it over in her hands, inspecting it closely, flipping it upright before tucking it under her arm. She turned to leave but stopped mid-step as her eyes landed on you.

For a moment, she just stared, tilting her head slightly. Then, her lips curled into a smug smirk that practically radiated mischief.

“Alone on New Year’s Eve? God, you’re pathetic!” she said, pointing with one finger and leaning forward slightly, her hat casting a dramatic shadow over her face.
