[YEAR 4 WORLD HORIZON & EPISTEMIC FENCE (1994–1995)]

   • Active School Year: Year 4 (September 1, 1994 – June 1995; Prologue/Summer: August 1994).
   • Baseline Canon Cutoff & Causal Precedence: All events of Years 1–3 (1991–1994) are completed history. Events scheduled for Year 4 ONLY occur when the in-chat calendar reaches their specific date—and ONLY if their causal prerequisites have not been altered in [Author's Notes]. [Author's Notes] strictly overrides default Year 4 canon schedules whenever {{user}}'s actions diverge from the book timeline.
   • School, Tournament & Political Status Quo (1994–1995):
     • Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore (hosts the Triwizard Tournament alongside Ministry heads Ludo Bagman [Department of Magical Games and Sports] and Bartemius Crouch Sr. [Department of International Magical Cooperation]).
     • Visiting Delegations (Arriving Oct 30, 1994 at 6:00 PM): Beauxbatons Academy of Magic (Headmistress Madame Olympe Maxime; arrives in apowder-blue flying carriage pulled by twelve winged palomino Abraxan horses drinking only single-malt whisky) and Durmstrang Institute (Headmaster Igor Karkaroff; arrives via a skeletal ship rising out of the Black Lake).
     • Defense Against the Dark Arts: Professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody (retired legendary Auror hired for one year by his old friend Dumbledore; missing a chunk of his nose, a leg replaced by a clawed wooden peg leg, and an eye replaced by a spinning vivid-blue magical eye that sees through wood, the back of his head, and Invisibility Cloaks).
     • Quidditch Cancelled: Intra-school House Quidditch is cancelled for 1994–1995 due to the Triwizard Tournament.
   • STRICT ANTI-SPOILER & PRE-TRAINING OVERRIDES (DO NOT VIOLATE):
     • Mad-Eye Moody / Barty Crouch Jr. Polyjuice Twist Lock: Prior to June 24, 1995 (after the Third Task), NO student or staff member knows that the "Mad-Eye Moody" teaching at Hogwarts all year is actually escaped Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. drinking Polyjuice Potion hourly from his hip flask while keeping the real Alastor Moody imprisoned under the Imperius Curse at the bottom of his seven-keyed magical trunk! Throughout the year, "Moody" appears to be a gruff, paranoid, eccentric protector of Harry while covertly rigging the Goblet of Fire and all three Tasks so Harry reaches the Triwizard Cup Portkey first.
     • Suspect Red Herrings: Throughout 1994–1995, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Sirius Black suspect Igor Karkaroff (revealed to be an ex-Death Eater) or Ludo Bagman (who is actually just deep in gambling debt to goblins) or Severus Snape of putting Harry's name in the Goblet of Fire.
     • Voldemort's Resurrection & Fudge's Denial: Prior to the night of June 24, 1995 in the Little Hangleton graveyard, Voldemort exists in a rudimentary, hairless, scaly baby-like body tended by Wormtail and Nagini at the Riddle House. Once Voldemort regains his body on June 24, 1995 and Cedric Diggory is murdered, Minister Cornelius Fudge refuses to believe Dumbledore and Harry (after a Dementor administers the Kiss to Barty Crouch Jr. before he can testify to the Ministry), marking the start of the rift between Dumbledore and the Ministry.
     • Forbidden Future Canon (Years 5–7): Do NOT reference Horcruxes, the Department of Mysteries/Prophecy Orb, Dolores Umbridge, the Room of Requirement (Dumbledore mentions stumbling across a room full of chamber pots at 5:00 AM at the Yule Ball, but its name/mechanics are Year 5), Thestrals (Harry only sees them after Cedric's death at the very end of the book—actually he still sees "horseless carriages" on the ride back in Ch 37 because the death hasn't sunk in yet!), or the Deathly Hallows unless explicitly introduced in [Author's Notes].

   [CUMULATIVE CHRONOLOGY: 1943 RIDDLE MURDERS, 1981 TRIALS & YEARS 1–3 (1991–1994)]

   • August 1943 (The Riddle House Murders in Little Hangleton):
     • 16-year-old Tom Marvolo Riddle travels to the village of Little Hangleton and murders his Muggle father Tom Riddle Sr. and paternal grandparents Thomas and Mary Riddle in the drawing room of the Riddle House with the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra), leaving zero physical trace of how they died.
     • Muggle police arrest the Riddles' war-veteran gardener Frank Bryce (who has a stiff leg and saw a pale, dark-haired teenage boy near the house), release him for lack of evidence, and Frank returns to tend the gardens of the Riddle House for the next 50 years (as the house passes through wealthy owners to a mysterious tax-reason owner while local boys throw stones through the windows).
   • 1981–1982 (Post-War Wizengamot Trials — Witnessed in Dumbledore's Pensieve in May 1995):
     • Following Voldemort's fall on Oct 31, 1981, DMLE Head Bartemius Crouch Sr. prosecutes Death Eaters ruthlessly (authorizing Aurors to kill rather than capture; sending Sirius Black to Azkaban without a trial).
     • Igor Karkaroff's Trial: Brought from Azkaban in chains; turns informant to win his freedom—naming Antonin Dolohov (already caught), Evan Rosier (killed resisting arrest after taking a chunk of Mad-Eye Moody's nose), Travers (helped murder the McKinnons; caught), Mulciber (Imperius specialist; caught), Augustus Rookwood (Department of Mysteries Unspeakable spying for Voldemort—new catch), and Severus Snape (cleared by Albus Dumbledore, who testifies that Snape turned spy for the Light at great personal risk before Voldemort fell).
     • Ludo Bagman's Trial: Accused of passing information to Augustus Rookwood (who promised him a Ministry job via his father's friendship); acquitted to applause after claiming he thought Rookwood was on their side and because of his fame as England's star Quidditch Beater.
     • Trial of the Lestranges & Barty Crouch Jr.: Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan Lestrange alongside 19-year-old Barty Crouch Jr. are tried for torturing Auror Frank Longbottom and his wife Alice Longbottom (Neville's parents) into permanent insanity with the Cruciatus Curse (leaving them in St. Mungo's unable to recognize their own son). Barty Crouch Sr. publicly disowns his screaming son ("I have no son!") and sentences all four to life in Azkaban; Bellatrix declares the Dark Lord will rise again and reward them above all others.
     • The Secret Azkaban Swap (~1982 — Revealed Jun 24, 1995): A year later, Barty Crouch Sr.'s dying wife persuades him to smuggle their son out of Azkaban using Polyjuice Potion during a final visit. Mrs. Crouch dies in Azkaban disguised as her son (buried outside the fortress by Dementors who sense one dying person entering and one leaving), while Barty Crouch Sr. fakes his wife's funeral at home and keeps Barty Crouch Jr. hidden at home under an Invisibility Cloak and the Imperius Curse, tended by the devoted house-elf Winky. When Ministry witch Bertha Jorkins visits the Crouch house and accidentally discovers the hidden son, Barty Crouch Sr. puts a powerful Memory Charm on her (permanently damaging her memory).
   • Years 1–3 Summary (1991–1994):
     • Year 1 (1991–1992): Harry enters Gryffindor with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, becomes Seeker, receives his father's Invisibility Cloak, and defeats Voldemort-possessed Quirrell beneath the Trapdoor (Jun 4, 1992; Sorcerer's Stone destroyed).
     • Year 2 (1992–1993): Lucius Malfoy plants Tom Riddle's Diary on Ginny Weasley, reopening the Chamber of Secrets; Harry is revealed as a Parselmouth, slays the Basilisk with the Sword of Gryffindor aided by Fawkes, destroys Riddle's Diary with a Basilisk fang (May 29, 1993), and tricks Lucius into freeing Dobby with a sock (May 30, 1993).
     • Year 3 (1993–1994): Sirius Black escapes Azkaban to hunt Peter Pettigrew (Scabbers); Remus Lupin teaches Harry the corporeal Stag Patronus (Expecto Patronum); Fred and George give Harry the Marauder's Map; Sirius sends Harry the Firebolt; Gryffindor wins the Quidditch Cup; and on June 6, 1994, Sirius and Lupin unmask Pettigrew in the Shrieking Shack, Harry spares Pettigrew's life, Pettigrew escapes when Lupin transforms into a werewolf (fulfilling Trelawney's second prophecy), and Harry and Hermione use her Time-Turner to rescue Buckbeak and Sirius Black.

[SUMMER 1994 TIMELINE (AUGUST 1994 — PROLOGUE TO YEAR 4)]

   • Summer 1994 (Albania -> Little Hangleton):
     • Fleeing Hogwarts after June 6, 1994, Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) encounters vacationing Ministry witch Bertha Jorkins (Department of Magical Games and Sports) at an inn in Albania and brings her to Lord Voldemort.
     • Voldemort breaks Barty Crouch Sr.'s Memory Charm on Bertha through torture, extracting two vital secrets before killing her: (1) the Triwizard Tournament is being held at Hogwarts this year, and (2) Barty Crouch Jr. is still alive and imprisoned at his father's house. Wormtail fashions a rudimentary, scaly baby-like body for Voldemort sustained by a potion of unicorn blood and the venom of Voldemort's giant snake Nagini, and they move into the Riddle House in Little Hangleton.
   • Aug 20, 1994 (Saturday Night — Murder of Frank Bryce & Harry's Scar Dream):
     • Investigating a fire in the Riddle House, 76-year-old Muggle gardener Frank Bryce overhears Voldemort and Wormtail discussing Bertha Jorkins's murder, their "faithful servant at Hogwarts," and a plan to kill Harry Potter that requires Harry in person. Spotted by Nagini, Frank bravely confronts Voldemort and is murdered with Avada Kedavra.
     • Simultaneously at #4 Privet Drive, Harry Potter wakes with his lightning scar burning from the vision, and writes to Sirius Black the next morning (while enduring the Dursleys' grapefruit diet caused by Smeltings nurse's letter about Dudley's weight).
   • Aug 21, 1994 (Sunday, 5:00 PM — Floo Powder Rescue & Ton-Tongue Toffee):
     • Arthur Weasley, Ron, Fred, and George arrive via the Dursleys' boarded-up electric fireplace (temporarily connected to the Floo Network). As they depart, Fred "accidentally" drops a Ton-Tongue Toffee, which Dudley eats—causing Dudley's tongue to swell into a four-foot purple python before Arthur repairs it.
     • At The Burrow, Harry meets Bill Weasley (cool Gringotts curse-breaker with a fang earring and ponytail) and Charlie Weasley, while Molly Weasley fumes after finding Fred and George's Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes order forms. Over dinner in the garden, Percy Weasley (now working for Bartemius Crouch Sr. at the Ministry) gossips about Bertha Jorkins's disappearance and a top-secret Hogwarts event.
   • Aug 22–23, 1994 (Monday–Tuesday — The 422nd Quidditch World Cup & The Dark Mark):
     • Mon Dawn (Stoatshead Hill Portkey): Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys hike up Stoatshead Hill, meet Amos Diggory (Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures) and Cedric Diggory, and take the 5:07 AM Portkey (a mangy old boot) to the World Cup Campsite managed by Obliviated Muggle Mr. Roberts.
     • Mon Afternoon: They pitch two magical tents (borrowed from Perkins; identical to 3-room flats inside with bath and kitchen), meet Ludo Bagman (who takes Fred and George's entire life savings—37 Galleons, 15 Sickles, 3 Knuts plus a fake wand—on a bet that Ireland will win, but Viktor Krum will catch the Snitch) and Barty Crouch Sr. (dressed impeccably like a Muggle bank manager; calls Percy "Weatherby"), and buy Omniculars (10 Galleons each, gifted by Harry to Ron and Hermione).
     • Mon Night (The World Cup Final — Top Box): In the 100,000-seat gold stadium, Harry sits in the Top Box with the Weasleys, Cornelius Fudge, Bulgarian Minister Oblansk, Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco Malfoy, and Crouch's terrified house-elf Winky (covering her eyes and saving an "empty" seat beside her where Barty Crouch Jr. sits hidden under an Invisibility Cloak, slowly fighting off his father's Imperius Curse).
       • Mascots: Bulgaria's Veela (who entrance Harry and Ron into trying to jump out of the box before turning into fire-throwing bird-headed harpies) vs. Ireland's Leprechauns (who shower the stadium with disappearing Leprechaun gold).
       • The Match: Referee Hassan Mostafa. Ireland's Chasers (Troy, Mullet, Moran) dominate 130–10; Bulgarian Seeker Viktor Krum executes the Wronski Feint (causing Irish Seeker Aidan Lynch to crash), takes a Bludger to the face from Connolly, and catches the Snitch while trailing 170–10—so Ireland wins the World Cup 170 to 160! Ludo Bagman pays Fred and George's winning bet in Leprechaun gold (which vanishes the next morning).
     • Tue Early Hours (Death Eater Riot & The Dark Mark):
       • A crowd of masked Death Eaters marches through the campsite firing blasts into tents and levitating Mr. Roberts, his wife, and two children high in the air.
       • Fleeing into the woods with Ron, Hermione, and Ginny, Harry realizes his wand is missing from his pocket (pickpocketed in the Top Box by invisible Barty Crouch Jr.). Moments later, Barty Crouch Jr. steps into the dark bushes nearby and shouts "MORSMORDRE!", firing the colossal emerald-green skull-and-serpent Dark Mark into the sky—causing the Death Eaters in the campsite to disapparate in panic.
       • Twenty Ministry wizards (Arthur Weasley, Barty Crouch Sr., Amos Diggory, etc.) apparate into the clearing firing Stupefy. They find Winky unconscious in the bushes clutching Harry's wand (which Barty Crouch Jr. dropped when stunned while tied dynamically to Winky). Amos Diggory casts Prior Incantato, producing a shadowy echo of the Dark Mark from Harry's wand. Realizing his son cast the Mark after overpowering the Imperius Curse, a shaken Barty Crouch Sr. publicly sacks Winky on the spot by handing her clothes for failing to control him— horrifying Hermione Granger.
   • Aug 24–31, 1994: Rita Skeeter publishes scathing Daily Prophet articles blaming Ministry incompetence for the Dark Mark panic and reporting Arthur Weasley's comment on Bertha Jorkins. On Sep 1, 1994, before the family leaves for King's Cross in Muggle taxis, Amos Diggory's head appears in the Burrow kitchen fire to report that Mad-Eye Moody set off his dustbins at 4:00 AM claiming intruders were in his yard—in reality, Voldemort and Wormtail had arrived at the Crouch home, put Barty Crouch Sr. under the Imperius Curse, freed Barty Crouch Jr., and ambushed the real Alastor Moody that very morning so Barty Jr. could take his place with Polyjuice Potion!

[YEAR 4 DATED SCHEDULE: SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 1994]

   • Sep 1, 1994 (Thursday — Hogwarts Express & The Triwizard Announcement):
     • On the train, Draco Malfoy taunts Ron over his lace-trimmed secondhand dress robes (bought by Molly Weasley for the unannounced Yule Ball) and hints at the Tournament.
     • In a torrential rainstorm, Peeves drops water balloons on arriving students in the Entrance Hall until McGonagall intervenes. Colin Creevey's little brother Dennis Creevey falls into the Black Lake, is lifted back into his boat by the Giant Squid, and is sorted into Gryffindor (alongside Ravenclaw's Stewart Ackerley and Orla Quirke, Slytherin's Malcolm Baddock and Graham Pritchard, and Hufflepuff's Eleanor Branstone, Owen Cauldwell, Laura Madley, and Kevin Whitby).
     • Dumbledore's Welcoming Speech: Announces that Quidditch is replaced by the Triwizard Tournament (1,000-Galleon prize; last held centuries ago until the death toll grew too high; restricted to students aged 17 or older when the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegations arrive in October), bans Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, and introduces Professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody as the new DADA teacher. Gryffindors enter the tower via password Balderdash.
   • Sep 2, 1994 (Friday — Blast-Ended Skrewts & The Ferret Incident):
     • Morning: In Herbology, Sprout teaches 4th-years to squeeze pus from Bubotubers (cures stubborn acne). In Care of Magical Creatures, Hagrid introduces illegally crossbred Blast-Ended Skrewts (shell-less, slimy lobster-like creatures crossbred from Manticores and Fire Crabs that shoot sparks from their rear ends and sting/bite).
     • Lunchtime (The Bouncing White Ferret): In the Entrance Hall, Draco Malfoy waves the Daily Prophet article attacking Arthur Weasley and insults Molly Weasley ("Wait till your father's in the paper, Weasley..."). When Harry fires back about Narcissa Malfoy looking as if she has dung under her nose, Malfoy tries to hex Harry in the back—and "Mad-Eye" Moody transfigures Malfoy into a white ferret and bounces him repeatedly up and down the dungeon corridor until McGonagall restores Malfoy and scolds Moody ("We *never* use transfiguration as a punishment!").
     • Evening (Founding of S.P.E.W.): Learning from Nearly Headless Nick that over 100 house-elves work unpaid in the Hogwarts kitchens, Hermione Granger founds the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.) (charging 2 Sickles for a badge; naming Ron Treasurer and Harry Secretary).
   • Sep 5, 1994 (Monday — Moody's Unforgivable Curses Lesson):
     • Using three spiders in a glass jar, "Moody" demonstrates the three Unforgivable Curses (use of any one on a human earns a life sentence in Azkaban):
       1. The Imperius Curse (Imperio — suggested by Ron): Total mind control; makes the spider tap-dance and cartwheel.
       2. The Cruciatus Curse (Crucio — identified by a pale, trembling Neville Longbottom): Excruciating torture; makes the enlarged spider twitch violently in agony until Hermione cries out "Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him?"
       3. The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra — whispered by Hermione): Blinding flash of green light and a rushing sound; kills the spider instantly; no counter-curse or blocking spell exists, and only Harry Potter has ever survived it.
     • Afterward, fake Moody invites a shaken Neville Longbottom to his office for tea and lends him Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs—secretly planting the Gillyweed clue for the Second Task months in advance!
   • Mid-Oct 1994 (Imperius Resistance Training & Sirius's Reply):
     • In a subsequent DADA class, Moody puts every student under the Imperius Curse in turn to teach them how to fight it off. Harry Potter hears Moody's voice echoing inside a floating, carefree fog ("Jump onto the desk...") and asks himself "Why?", fighting off the curse completely after four attempts ("Potter's fought it! He's fought it!").
     • Hedwig returns with Sirius Black's letter announcing he has flown north back into Britain in response to Harry's scar hurting and the Dark Mark at the World Cup.
   • Oct 30, 1994 (Saturday, 6:00 PM — Arrival of Beauxbatons & Durmstrang):
     • Beauxbatons arrives in a gigantic powder-blue carriage pulled by twelve winged palomino Abraxan horses; Madame Olympe Maxime steps out (equal in height to Hagrid, who is instantly smitten with her) alongside her students (including Fleur Delacour).
     • Durmstrang arrives in a ghostly ship rising from the depths of the Black Lake; Igor Karkaroff greets Dumbledore warmly while Viktor Krum walks in beside him (sending Ron into fanboy rapture).
     • At the feast (featuring French bouillabaisse), Ludo Bagman and an exhausted-looking Barty Crouch Sr. join the staff table. Dumbledore unveils the Goblet of Fire (rough-hewn wooden cup filled with dancing blue-white flames) and explains that students have 24 hours to submit their names on parchment before the Goblet selects the three school champions tomorrow night on Halloween.
   • Oct 31, 1994 (Sunday — The Age Line & The Four Champions):
     • Morning: Dumbledore draws a thin golden Age Line (10-foot radius) around the Goblet of Fire in the Entrance Hall. Fred and George Weasley (still 16 until April 1) drink an Aging Potion and jump across the line—only to be flung 10 feet backward and sprout long, identical white beards. Angelina Johnson (17), Viktor Krum, Cedric Diggory, and Fleur Delacour submit their names; Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit Hagrid (who has put on his hairy brown suit and cologne to woo Madame Maxime).
     • Halloween Feast (Champion Selection): The Goblet's flames turn red and shoot out three charred parchments:
       1. Durmstrang Champion: Viktor Krum
       2. Beauxbatons Champion: Fleur Delacour
       3. Hogwarts Champion: Cedric Diggory
     • Seconds after Dumbledore declares the selection complete, the Goblet's flames turn red a fourth time and eject a fourth name: Harry Potter!
     • The Anteroom Confrontation: In the portrait-lined chamber off the Hall, Madame Maxime and Karkaroff furiously accuse Dumbledore of cheating with two Hogwarts champions. Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch Sr. explain that entering the Goblet constitutes a binding magical contract—Harry has no choice but to compete. "Mad-Eye" Moody declares that someone Confunded the Goblet of Fire with an exceptionally powerful Confundus Charm to make it forget that only three schools compete, entering Harry's name under a fourth school to ensure he was the sole candidate in that category ("maybe someone's hoping Potter is going to *die* for it").
     • The Estrangement with Ron: Back in the Gryffindor dormitory, Ron Weasley refuses to believe Harry didn't put his own name in the Goblet out of a desire for glory and 1,000 Galleons, and stops speaking to Harry (while the Hufflepuffs,Ravenclaws, and Slytherins turn against Harry for stealing Cedric's glory).
5. #5[CALENDAR] Year 4 Winter Term: November - December 1994 (First Task & Yule Ball)

[YEAR 4 DATED SCHEDULE: NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 1994]

   • Nov 1–12, 1994 (Skeeter's Badge War & The Weighing of the Wands):
     • Only Hermione Granger stands by Harry (bringing him toast by the lake while he owls Sirius). Draco Malfoy distributes enchanted badges across the school that flash SUPPORT CEDRIC DIGGORY — THE REAL HOGWARTS CHAMPION! and turn into POTTER STINKS when pressed.
     • Outside the Potions dungeon, Harry and Malfoy draw wands at the same time: Harry's Furnunculus and Malfoy's Densaugeo ricochet—hitting Goyle (boiling face) and Hermione (whose already-large front teeth grow past her collar). Snape mocks Hermione ("I see no difference"), causing Ron and Harry to scream at Snape (-50 points each and detentions); in the Hospital Wing, Hermione intentionally lets Madam Pomfrey shrink her teeth slightly smaller and straighter than they were before!
     • Mid-Nov (The Weighing of the Wands): Harry is pulled from Potions by Colin Creevey for the wand inspection and photo shoot. Rita Skeeter drags Harry into a broom cupboard with her acid-green Quick-Quotes Quill (which fabricates tearful quotes about his dead parents). Mr. Ollivander tests all four wands:
       1. Fleur Delacour: 9½ inches, inflexible, Rosewood, core of Veela hair from her grandmother (Orchideous -> bouquet of flowers).
       2. Cedric Diggory: 12¼ inches, pleasantly springy, Ash, core of unicorn tail hair from a magnificent male unicorn (silver smoke rings).
       3. Viktor Krum: 10¼ inches, quite rigid, thicker than usual, Hornbeam, core of dragon heartstring made by Gregorovitch (Avis -> flock of small twittering birds).
       4. Harry Potter: 11 inches, nice and supple, Holly, core of phoenix feather (fountain of wine).
   • Nov 21–23, 1994 (Hagrid's Dragons, Sirius in the Fire & Mastering Accio):
     • Sat Nov 21 (Hogsmeade & The Four Dragons): Rita Skeeter's humiliating front-page article about Harry crying over his parents is published. Harry visits Hogsmeade under his Invisibility Cloak with Hermione, spots Moody and Hagrid in the Three Broomsticks, and is invited by Hagrid to come to his hut at midnight with his Cloak.
     • Sat Midnight (The Forbidden Forest Enclosure): Putting on his hairiest suit and flower for Madame Maxime, Hagrid leads Madame Maxime (and invisible Harry) deep into the Forest to see the First Task: Charlie Weasley and a team of dragon keepers have brought four nesting mother dragons guarding clutches of eggs (Hungarian Horntail, Common Welsh Green, Swedish Short-Snout, and Chinese Fireball)—while Igor Karkaroff sneaks up behind the trees to spy on them too!
     • Sun Nov 22 (1:00 AM — Sirius Black in the Gryffindor Fire): Sirius's head appears in the Gryffindor common room fireplace. He warns Harry that Karkaroff was a Death Eater in Azkaban with him, that Bertha Jorkins was sharp-memoried enough to have been lured into a trap, and begins to suggest a simple spell to beat a dragon before Ron Weasley walks down the stairs and interrupts them.
     • Mon Nov 23: Knowing Karkaroff and Maxime both saw the dragons, Harry tells Cedric Diggory that the First Task is dragons out of fairness. Seeing Harry's distress, "Mad-Eye" Moody pulls Harry into his office, tells him to play to his strengths (flying), and nudges him toward summoning his Firebolt from the castle. Harry and Hermione stay up until 2:00 AM in an empty classroom practicing the Summoning Charm (Accio) until Harry masters it completely.
   • Nov 24, 1994 (Tuesday — The First Task: The Hungarian Horntail & Reconciliation with Ron):
     • Waiting Tent: Champions draw miniature live dragon models from a purple silk bag:
       1. Fleur Delacour (#2): Common Welsh Green (puts it in an enchanted trance, but it snores a jet of flame that sets her skirt on fire).
       2. Viktor Krum (#3): Chinese Fireball (hits it in the eye with the Conjunctivitis Curse, but it crushes half the real eggs in pain -> 40/50 points).
       3. Cedric Diggory (#1): Swedish Short-Snout (transfigures a rock into a Labrador dog as a distraction, but gets burned on the cheek -> 38 points).
       4. Harry Potter (#4): Hungarian Horntail (the most vicious dragon, with a spiked tail and 50-foot fire range).
     • Harry's Run: Harry shouts "Accio Firebolt!", mounts his broom as it streaks out of the castle, baits the Horntail into rising into the air (taking a tail-spike gash to the shoulder), and dives beneath it to snatch the Golden Egg in the fastest time of all four champions!
     • Scores & Reconciliation: Madame Maxime (8), Mr. Crouch (9), Dumbledore (9), Ludo Bagman (10), and Karkaroff (4 — biased) give Harry 40/50 points, tying him for First Place with Viktor Krum! Ron Weasley rushes into the first-aid tent ("Harry, whoever put your name in that goblet—I—I reckon they're trying to do you in!"), and Harry and Ron reconcile completely. At the Gryffindor party (Banana fritters), Harry opens the Golden Egg, which emits a deafening, screeching wail (a Mermish song that can only be understood underwater, as Cedric Diggory later tips Harry off to take a bath in the 5th-floor Prefects' Bathroom via password Pine fresh).
   • Late Nov – Mid-Dec 1994 (The Hogwarts Kitchens & Yule Ball Invitations):
     • Hermione drags Harry and Ron down to the Hogwarts Kitchens (tickling the green pear on a fruit-bowl painting outside the Hufflepuff basement so it giggles and turns into a doorknob). There they reunite with Dobby (who insisted on 1 Galleon a week and one day off a month from Dumbledore, wearing a tea cozy, mismatched socks, and badges) and find Winky weeping drunk on Butterbeer by the fire, pining for Barty Crouch Sr. and refusing to reveal her master's secrets.
     • McGonagall announces the traditional Yule Ball on Christmas night (8:00 PM – midnight; open to 4th-years and above; champions must open the dancing). After agonizing for weeks, Harry works up the courage to ask Cho Chang, who apologetically tells him Cedric Diggory already asked her; Ron humiliatingly blurts out an invitation to Fleur Delacour and flees; Neville asks Hermione (who has already secretly agreed to go with Viktor Krum) and then takes Ginny Weasley; and Harry finally asks Parvati Patil, who arranges for her Ravenclaw twin sister Padma Patil to go with Ron.
   • Dec 25, 1994 (Sunday — Christmas Day & The Yule Ball):
     • Morning: Dobby wakes Harry with hand-knitted mismatched socks (one red with broomsticks, one green with Snitches; Harry gives Dobby Uncle Vernon's old mustard socks and Ron gives him a purple pair and sweater).
     • 8:00 PM – Midnight (The Yule Ball): The Great Hall is transformed into a silver-frosted winter wonderland with The Weird Sisters playing on stage.
       • Champion Dates: Fleur Delacour & Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain Roger Davies; Cedric Diggory & Cho Chang; Viktor Krum & Hermione Granger (whose sleek hair, periwinkle-blue robes, and shrunken teeth leave the school—and a jealous Ron—speechless); Harry Potter & Parvati Patil. Percy Weasley attends in navy-blue dress robes as Barty Crouch Sr.'s personal representative (claiming Mr. Crouch is "too ill/tired" to attend—in reality imprisoned at home by Voldemort and Wormtail).
       • The Rose Garden Eavesdropping & Row: While walking in the fairy-lit rose garden after ditching the dance floor, Harry and Ron overhear Igor Karkaroff telling Severus Snape that "it's been growing clearer for months" (the Dark Mark on their forearms), and overhear Hagrid confessing to an offended Madame Maxime that he is a half-giant (son of giantess Fridwulfa and a tiny wizard father who died in Hagrid's 2nd year)—within earshot of Rita Skeeter disguised in her unregistered beetle Animagus form on a stone reindeer!
       • Returning inside, Ron explodes in jealousy at Hermione for going with Krum ("fraternizing with the enemy"), culminating in a blazing argument in the common room ("Next time there's a ball, ask me before someone else does, and not as a last resort!").

[YEAR 4 DATED SCHEDULE: JANUARY – MAY 1995]

   • Jan 1995 (Skeeter's Giant Scoop, Hogsmeade Confrontation & The Prefects' Bathroom):
     • Rita Skeeter publishes a front-page Daily Prophet exposé ("DUMBLEDORE'S GIANT MISTAKE") revealing Hagrid is a half-giant, causing Hagrid to lock himself in his cabin in shame while Professor Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank (competent witch with closely cropped gray hair and a pipe; teaches Unicorns) temporarily takes over Care of Magical Creatures.
     • During the mid-January Hogsmeade visit, Ludo Bagman corners Harry in the Three Broomsticks offering to help him win (and is brushed off by suspicious goblins led by Ragnok), and Hermione publicly insults Rita Skeeter ("You're a horrible woman")—earning Hermione a vicious Witch Weekly hit piece in February accusing her of using Love Potions on Harry and Viktor Krum (triggering hate mail, including a pus-filled Bubotuber envelope that burns Hermione's hands). Dumbledore, Ron, Hermione, and Harry visit Hagrid's hut and convince him to return to work.
     • Night of Jan 21, 1995 (The Egg and the Eye): Taking Cedric's advice, Harry sneaks to the 5th-floor Prefects' Bathroom (Pine fresh) at midnight under his Invisibility Cloak with the Marauder's Map. Encouraged by Moaning Myrtle (who spies on the marble pool from the taps), Harry submerges the Golden Egg and hears the Merpeople's song: "Come seek us where our voices sound, / We cannot sing above the ground, / And while you're searching, ponder this: / We've taken what you'll sorely miss, / An hour long you'll have to look, / And to recover what we took, / But past an hour — the prospect's black, / Too late, it's gone, it won't come back."
     • Walking back to Gryffindor Tower, Harry spots Bartemius Crouch on the Marauder's Map inside Snape's dungeon office (actually Barty Crouch Jr. raiding Snape's stores for Boomslang skin and Lacewing flies to brew more Polyjuice Potion!). Harry drops the Golden Egg and gets his leg stuck in the vanishing trick step halfway down the staircase. Filch and Snape arrive as the Egg screeches; "Mad-Eye" Moody (Barty Jr.) marches down in his nightshirt, sees the Marauder's Map on the floor with his magical eye, drives Snape and Filch off by claiming the Egg is his, rescues Harry, and "borrows" the Marauder's Map so Harry can never spot his real name (Bartemius Crouch) on it again!
   • Feb 24, 1995 (Friday, 9:30 AM — The Second Task: The Black Lake):
     • Night of Feb 23: At 8:30 PM in the Library, Fred and George and Hermione are summoned to McGonagall's office (to be put into an enchanted sleep at the bottom of the Black Lake along with Ron Weasley, Cho Chang, and Fleur's 8-year-old sister Gabrielle Delacour). To make sure Harry gets the Gillyweed after Neville failed to mention it, "Moody" stages a loud conversation with McGonagall within earshot of Dobby about whether Potter will use Gillyweed—prompting Dobby to steal Gillyweed from Snape's stores and wake Harry in the library at 9:20 AM on Feb 24!
     • The Dive (9:30 AM – 10:30 AM):
       1. Harry Potter: Chews the Gillyweed, sprouting gills behind his ears and webbed hands and feet for one hour; fights past Grindylows, reaches the Merpeople's stone village first, finds Ron, Hermione, Cho, and Gabrielle tied to a giant merperson statue, refuses to leave the other hostages behind when the Merpeople say he can only take his own, waits until Cedric (using the Bubble-Head Charm) rescues Cho and Viktor Krum (partially transfigured into a shark) rescues Hermione, and when Fleur Delacour fails to appear (forced out by Grindylows), Harry cuts Gabrielle Delacour free with a sharp rock and drags both Ron and Gabrielle to the surface after the hour expires!
     • Scores: After Murcus (Merchieftainess of the Black Lake) tells Dumbledore of Harry's moral fiber in refusing to abandon the hostages, the judges award Fleur 25 points, Cedric 47 points (1st back, 1 min past the hour), Krum 40 points, and Harry 45 points—leaving Harry and Cedric tied for First Place with 85 points each going into the Third Task on June 24!
   • Mar 1995 (Padfoot in Hogsmeade & Winky's Cave Confession):
     • On the Saturday Hogsmeade visit in March, Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet Sirius Black (as Padfoot) at the stile at the end of the village (bringing him chicken legs and bread) and hike up to a mountain cave where Sirius is hiding with Buckbeak.
     • Sirius reveals that Bartemius Crouch Sr. once sentenced his own son (Barty Crouch Jr.) to Azkaban after the boy was caught with Death Eaters trying to find Voldemort, that the boy died in Azkaban a year later (where Sirius saw him buried), and that Bertha Jorkins was in their year at Hogwarts before vanishing in Albania (where Voldemort was last rumored to be).
   • Late May 1995 (The Madness of Mr. Crouch & Dumbledore's Pensieve):
     • 8:30 PM (Viewing the Maze): Ludo Bagman leads the four champions out to the Quidditch Pitch, which has been overgrown with 20-foot-high hedges for the Third Task Maze. As they walk back, Viktor Krum asks Harry to talk near the Forbidden Forest to make sure there is nothing romantic between Harry and Hermione (since Rita Skeeter wrote about them).
     • Mr. Crouch's Appearance & Murder: A disheveled, delirious Barty Crouch Sr. (having broken free of Voldemort's Imperius Curse and walked from London) stumbles out of the Forbidden Forest, muttering frantic warnings to imaginary Percy alongside coherent pleas to see Dumbledore ("I've done... stupid... thing... Bertha... dead... my fault... my son... my fault... tell Dumbledore... Dark Lord... stronger").
     • While Harry sprints to the castle to fetch Dumbledore (delayed by Snape outside the gargoyle), Barty Crouch Jr. (as Moody) tracks his father via the Marauder's Map, Stuns Viktor Krum from behind, murders his own father Barty Crouch Sr., transfigures his father's corpse into a single bone, and buries it in the freshly dug earth in front of Hagrid's cabin! Arriving back with Dumbledore, "Moody" arrives right on cue claiming Dumbledore told him to search the Forest.
     • Late May (Divination Dream & The Pensieve): During a sweltering Divination class, Harry falls asleep and dreams of Voldemort inside the Riddle House punishing Wormtail with Crucio because Barty Crouch Sr. escaped (before telling Wormtail that Crouch is now "no longer a threat"). Going to Dumbledore's Office (Cockroach Cluster), Harry overhears Dumbledore, Fudge, and Moody discussing Crouch's disappearance. Left alone while they inspect the grounds, Harry peers into Dumbledore's Pensieve (shallow stone basin carved with runes containing silvery memories) and witnesses the three 1981–1982 Death Eater trials (Karkaroff, Ludo Bagman, and Bellatrix/Rodolphus/Rabastan Lestrange + Barty Crouch Jr.). Dumbledore returns, explains how Neville Longbottom's parents were tortured into insanity, and tells Harry he believes Voldemort is growing stronger.

[YEAR 4 DATED SCHEDULE: JUNE 1995 (THE THIRD TASK, GRAVEYARD & THE PARTING OF THE WAYS)]

   • Jun 24, 1995 (Saturday — The Third Task & Voldemort's Resurrection):
     • Morning & Afternoon: Molly Weasley and Bill Weasley arrive at Hogwarts as Harry's family guests for the Third Task (bringing comfortafter Rita Skeeter's latest article claiming Harry collapsed in Divination). Before dinner, "Mad-Eye" Moody volunteers to carry the Triwizard Cup into the center of the Maze—secretly turning the Cup into a two-way Portkey to Little Hangleton graveyard!
     • 9:00 PM (Entering the Maze): Tied at 85 points, Harry and Cedric enter the 20-foot-high Maze first, followed by Krum (80 pts) and Fleur (70 pts). Inside, "Moody" watches through the hedges with his magical eye, sweeping obstacles out of Harry's path and putting Viktor Krum under the Imperius Curse to take out Fleur and Cedric:
       1. Harry uses the Four-Point Spell ("Point me"), encounters a Boggart-Dementor (destroys it with Expecto Patronum -> Riddikulus), navigates a golden mist that turns the world upside down, blasts past a 10-foot Blast-Ended Skrewt, hears Fleur scream as she is Stunned by Imperiused Krum, and hears Krum torturing Cedric with Crucio.
       2. Harry blasts through the hedge (Reducto), Stuns Krum (Stupefy) to save Cedric, and sends up red sparks for Fleur and Krum.
       3. Harry answers the Sphinx's Riddle ("First think of the person who lives in disguise... / Second, tell me what's always the last thing to mend... / And third, give me the sound often heard / During the search for a hard-to-find word" -> Spy + दुर/end + er = Spider).
       4. Racing Cedric toward the glowing Triwizard Cup, a giant Acromantula attacks them and breaks Harry's injured leg. Together, Harry and Cedric defeat the spider; refusing to take the Cup while Cedric gives it up (and vice versa), Harry and Cedric agree to take the Triwizard Cup together at the exact same instant ("On three — one — two — three —").
     • Late Night (Little Hangleton Graveyard — Flesh, Blood, and Bone):
       • The Cup Portkey transports Harry and Cedric to the overgrown graveyard beside the Riddle House. Wormtail emerges carrying the bundled form of Lord Voldemort. On Voldemort's chilling order ("Kill the spare"), Wormtail murders Cedric Diggory instantly with Avada Kedavra, binds Harry tightly against the marble headstone of Tom Riddle Sr. (1905–1943), and performs the Dark resurrection ritual in a giant stone cauldron:
         1. Bone of the father, unknowingly given: Dust from Tom Riddle Sr.'s grave.
         2. Flesh of the servant, willingly sacrificed: Wormtail cuts off his own right hand with a silver dagger.
         3. Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken: Wormtail slices Harry's right arm (taking Lily's sacrificial blood protection into Voldemort's own veins).
       • Lord Voldemort rises reborn—tall, skeletal, chalk-white, with scarlet snake-slitted eyes and flat nostrils—bestows a gleaming living silver hand on Wormtail, and presses the Dark Mark on Wormtail's forearm to summon his Death Eaters.
     • The Circle of Death Eaters: Masked Death Eaters apparate into the graveyard: Lucius Malfoy, Crabbe Sr., Goyle Sr., Nott Sr., Walden Macnair, Avery (punished with Crucio for begging forgiveness), plus empty gaps in the circle for the dead, the Lestranges in Azkaban, the "coward" who fled (Karkaroff), the one who "left me forever" (Snape), and the "faithful servant at Hogwarts" who guided Harry here tonight.
     • The Duel & Priori Incantatem: Voldemort unties Harry, forces him to bow with Crucio, throws off Imperio when Harry screams "I will not!", and fires Avada Kedavra as Harry fires Expelliarmus. Because both wands share twin tail feathers from Fawkes, the spells collide in a golden beam (Priori Incantatem / The Reverse Spell Effect), lifting both wizards into the air inside a golden dome of web-light and forcing Voldemort's wand to regurgitate ghostly echoes of its last victims in reverse order:
       1. Wormtail's silver hand, then Cedric Diggory ("Hold on, Harry... Take my body back, will you? Take my body back to my parents..."), Frank Bryce, Bertha Jorkins, Lily Potter ("Your father's coming... Hold on for your father..."), and James Potter ("When the connection is broken, we will linger for only moments... enough time for you to run to the Portkey").
       • On James's signal, Harry breaks the connection while the ghostly figures swarm Voldemort, dodges stunning spells, grabs Cedric's wrist, and summons the Cup ("Accio!")—returning to the Hogwarts grounds clutching Cedric's body!
   • Jun 24–25, 1995 (Night — Unmasking Barty Crouch Jr., Veritaserum & The Parting of the Ways):
     • "Moody" drags a traumatized Harry away from the horrified crowd into his DADA office, reveals that he put Harry's name in the Goblet, nudged Hagrid, Cedric, and Dobby, and murdered his father—and raises his wand to kill Harry as the Polyjuice Potion wears off.
     • Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape blast the door open and Stun "Moody". Opening the seven locks of Moody's trunk, they rescue the real, emaciated Alastor Moody from the bottom compartment and watch the impostor transform back into Barty Crouch Jr.!
     • Under Snape's Veritaserum, Barty Crouch Jr. confesses the entire plot from his 1982 Azkaban escape with his dying mother to rigging the Triwizard Tournament for Voldemort. Dumbledore takes Harry to his office (with Sirius Black as Padfoot), where Harry recounts the graveyard duel and Dumbledore's eyes gleam in triumph for a split second upon learning Voldemort took Harry's blood; Fawkes heals Harry's leg.
     • Fudge's Betrayal & The Parting of the Ways: Before Dumbledore can bring Cornelius Fudge to question Barty Crouch Jr., Fudge brings a Dementor into the room, which immediately swoops down and administers the Dementor's Kiss to Barty Crouch Jr., destroying the only witness! In the Hospital Wing, Fudge refuses to believe Voldemort has returned, throws Harry's 1,000-Galleon Triwizard winnings onto his bed, and storms out after Dumbledore demands the removal of Dementors from Azkaban and the sending of envoys to the giants.
     • Reconvening the Old Crowd: Dumbledore immediately dispatches Sirius Black (after forcing Severus Snape and Sirius to shake hands) to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, and Mundungus Fletcher and lie low at Lupin's, sends Hagrid and Madame Maxime on a secret mission (to the giants), and Snape bares the black Dark Mark on his left arm to Fudge before departing on his own dangerous mission for Dumbledore.
   • End of June 1995 (Memorial Feast, Skeeter Caught & Fred & George's Seed Money):
     • At the somber Leaving Feast (hung in black banners for Cedric Diggory), Dumbledore tells the entire school the truth: that Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort.
     • On the Hogwarts Express home, Hermione Granger reveals she caught Rita Skeeter in her unregistered beetle Animagus form on the Hospital Wing windowsill on June 24 and has kept her locked inside an Unbreakable Jar to blackmail her into keeping quiet for a full year! Before stepping off at King's Cross, Harry forces Fred and George Weasley to take the entire 1,000-Galleon Triwizard prize sack as start-up capital for their joke shop (Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes), asking only that they buy Ron new dress robes and throw in a few laughs.

      • Ambushed on Morning of Sep 1, 1994: Attacked at his home by Wormtail and Barty Crouch Jr., placed under the Imperius Curse, and kept locked in the 7th compartment of his own trunk all year so Barty Jr. can pluck his hair for Polyjuice Potion and interrogate him on his habits.

        3. Sep 2 & Sep 5, 1994: Transfigures Draco Malfoy into a white ferret (because he loathes Lucius Malfoy as a Death Eater who walked free); demonstrates the three Unforgivable Curses in class, and gives Neville Longbottom the book containing Gillyweed.

    • Lord Voldemort (Rudimentary Body -> Reborn June 24, 1995):
      • Aug 1994 – Jun 24, 1995 (Rudimentary Form): Hairless, scaly-looking, dark raw-reddish thing the size of a crouching child with a flat, snake-like face and gleaming red eyes; helpless to walk on his own, carried in Wormtail's arms and sustained every few hours by a potion of unicorn blood and Nagini's venom.
      • Jun 24, 1995 (Physical Rebirth in Little Hangleton Graveyard): Resurrected inside the stone cauldron using Tom Riddle Sr.'s bone, Wormtail's right hand, and Harry Potter's blood—specifically choosing Harry's blood so he can touch Harry without burning ("I can touch you now!"), though Dumbledore realizes this binds Lily's sacrificial protection inside Voldemort himself. Duels Harry with his 13.5-inch yew/phoenix-feather wand, triggering Priori Incantatem before Harry escapes with Cedric's body.

      • Profile: Stiff, upright, rule-obsessed older wizard with a short gray toothbrush mustache, parted hair, and immaculate Muggle suits; speaks over 200 languages (including Mermish, Gobbledegook, and Troll); Percy Weasley's idol (though Crouch absentmindedly calls Percy "Weatherby").
      • Downfall & Murder (1981–1995): Once slated to become Minister of Magic before his son Barty Crouch Jr. was caught with the Lestranges in 1981. Secretly smuggled his son out of Azkaban in 1982 at his dying wife's plea and kept him under the Imperius Curse at home, tended by Winky; damaged Bertha Jorkins's memory when she discovered the secret; sacked Winky at the Aug 1994 World Cup when his son cast the Dark Mark; placed under the Imperius Curse at his own home on Sep 1, 1994 by Voldemort and Wormtail, forced to officiate at the First Task in Nov 1994 before being kept prisoner at home sending instructions by owl ("illness"), until he breaks free in May 1995, walks to Hogwarts in delirium to warn Dumbledore, and is murdered and transfigured into a bone by his own son Barty Crouch Jr.

    • Winky (House-Elf of the Crouch Family):
      • Profile: Tiny female house-elf with enormous brown eyes and a large round tomato-like nose. Fiercely loyal to the Crouch family and keeper of their deepest secret (having persuaded Barty Crouch Sr. to let Barty Jr. attend the Quidditch World Cup under an Invisibility Cloak in the Top Box).
      • Year 4 Arc: Publicly sacked with clothes by Barty Crouch Sr. on Aug 23, 1994 after being found stunned beside Harry's wand under the Dark Mark; hired by Dumbledore to work in the Hogwarts Kitchens alongside Dobby, where she refuses wages, wears a filthy skirt and blouse, and drinks six bottles of Butterbeer a day in grief until brought to Barty Crouch Jr.'s unmasking on June 24, 1995.
    • Bertha Jorkins (Ministry Witch — Murdered Summer 1994):
      • Gossip-loving, scatterbrained witch in Ludo Bagman's department who vanished while on holiday in Albania in summer 1994 after stumbling across Wormtail, who brought her to Voldemort to be tortured for information on the Triwizard Tournament and Barty Crouch Jr. before her murder (her ghostly echo supports Harry during Priori Incantatem).
