- #1Acromantula/Beast
Keys: Acromantula · Secondary: Acromantulas, Giant Spiders
An Acromantula was a giant magical species of spider native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo, where it inhabited dense jungles. Acromantulas were believed to be a wizard-bred species, designed to guard dwellings or treasure hoards, and were first created before the Ban on Experimental Breeding in 1965. These giant spiders had a taste for human flesh and were first spotted in 1794. Acromantulas sported eight black eyes (white if blind) and were typically covered in thick black hair, with a leg span that could reach up to fifteen feet. On average, they were the size of a carthorse, though old specimens such as Aragog could grow up to 15 feet in leg span.
Catergorized as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures are known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #2Ashwinder/Beast
Keys: Ashwinder · Secondary: Ashwinders
The Ashwinder is a thin pale-grey snake with glowing red eyes. They rose from the dying embers of magical fire that had been allowed to burn unchecked and unsupervised. Once born, the Ashwinder slithered off into a dark corner to lay their eggs, leaving an ashy trail behind. Ashwinders only lived for an hour and collapsed to dust when they have laid their eggs.
Ashwinder eggs were red and give off an intense heat. The heat was capable of igniting a dwelling within minutes of their birth. Wizards suspecting the presence of Ashwinders in a house had to immediate track down the nest and freeze them using an appropriate spell. Once frozen, Ashwinder eggs were very valuable; they could be used in a love potions, eaten whole as a cure for ague, or one batch could be used for the Edurus Potion.
Classified as an XXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures should have been no trouble to competent wizards.
- #3Augurey/Beast
Keys: Augurey · Secondary: Augureys
The Augurey, also known as the Irish Phoenix, was a thin and mournful looking magical bird, somewhat like a small underfed vulture in appearance, with greenish black feathers and a sharp beak.
Intensely shy, the Augurey lived in a tear-shaped nest in thorn and brambles. Its diet consisted of insects, fairies and flies, which it hunted for in the heavy rain. The cry of the Augurey signalled approaching rainfall.
It was native to Great Britain and Ireland, but it had spread to the rest of Northern Europe. It was long believed that the mournful cry of the Augurey foretold death, and wizards would go to great lengths to avoid Augurey nests. However, research determined that the Augurey merely sings when it is about to rain.
Classified as an XX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were generally harmless and could be domesticated.
- #4Basilisk/Beast
Keys: Basilisk · Secondary: Basilisks
The Basilisk was a giant serpent, also known as the King of Serpents. It was a magical beast that was usually bred by Dark wizards. Herpo the Foul was the first to breed a Basilisk. Herpo accomplished this by hatching a chicken egg beneath a toad which resulted in the creature known as a Basilisk.
Basilisk breeding was banned in Medieval times, a regulation that has not changed. The practice could be hidden when the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures came to check by simply removing the egg from the toad.
Looking a Basilisk directly in the eye caused instant death, but an indirect look would merely render the victim Petrified. It was also the mortal enemy of spiders. Spiders refused to speak of the Basilisk, could intuitively sense their presence, and would flee whenever they sensed them.
Catergorized as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures are known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #5Billywig/Beast
Keys: Billywig · Secondary: Billywigs
The Billywig was a magical insect native to Australia. Around half an inch long and of a vivid sapphire blue colour. The speed of the Billywig may be why it was rarely noticed by Muggles, and wizards and witches often only spotted it once they had been stung.
The Billywig's wings were attached to the top of its head rotated extremely fast, spinning the Billywig so that it could fly. The Billywig also had a long, thin stinger at the bottom of its body. Anyone stung by a Billywig would suffer giddiness, followed by levitation.
Billywigs lived in swarms and were drawn to others of their species. They could signal the presence of another Billywig nearby by buzzing and then flying towards them.
Dried Billywig stings were used as ingredients in several potions, and were believed to be a component in Fizzing Whizzbees.
Classified as an XXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures should have been no trouble to competent wizards.
- #6Blast-Ended Skrewt/Beast
Keys: Blast-Ended Skrewt · Secondary: Blast-Ended Skrewts
Newly hatched Skrewts looked like pale, slimy deformed shell-less lobsters or scorpions. They had legs sticking out at odd angles. They were about six inches long and smelled strongly of rotten fish. Sparks flew out of their rear ends every so often, which propelled them forward a few inches. The males had stingers and the females had suckers on their body to suck blood. The skrewts did not hibernate during winter.
After about two months, Skrewts grew to about three feet long and became extremely ill tempered, making it hard to get close to one. They grew grey, shiny armour over their pale bodies and began to resemble a cross between giant scorpions and elongated crabs. The males held their stingers over their backs, and were highly dangerous and repulsive.
After several months, Skrewts grew to about ten feet long, and were incredibly dangerous (and probably quite lethal). They resembled giant scorpions with stingers curled over their backs. Their shiny armour deflected most spells, and they used their blasts to propel themselves at a foe. Its single undefended spot was its armour-less underside.
Unknown classification.
- #7Bowtruckle/Beast
Keys: Bowtruckle · Secondary: Bowtruckles
The Bowtruckle was a hand-sized, insect-eating, tree dwelling magical beast with long sharp fingers (two on each hand), brown eyes, and a general appearance of a flat-faced stick figure made of bark and twigs, which served well as camouflage in its natural habitat.
The Bowtruckle could be found in western England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests. A Bowtruckle served as a tree guardian for its home tree, which was usually a tree whose wood was of wand quality (such as a Wiggentree). The twig-like fingers were well adapted for digging out woodlice from trees and could also be used as a weapon against a foe when aimed at the eyes.
A group of Bowtruckles was called a branch.
It was generally a peaceful creature, but it could attempt to gouge out an attacker's eyes if anything threatened its tree or itself, and was adept at dodging most types of charms. In order to take leaves or wood from a Bowtruckle's tree, a wizard or witch had to offer it woodlice or fairy eggs as a distraction.
Classified as an XX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were generally harmless and could be domesticated.
- #8Bundimun/Beast
Keys: Bundimun · Secondary: Bundimuns
The Bundimun was a magical beast that was found worldwide.
It was a greenish, many-eyed pest that fed on dirt. The creature crept under floorboards and behind skirting boards, infesting houses. Their presence was indicated by the foul stench of decay. The secretions of the Bundimun were extremely acidic and could rot building structures. A large enough infestation could cause a building to collapse as the foundations were rotted away. Scouring Charms could clear out small infestations, but large colonies needed to be dealt with by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division). Bundimuns spat out its acidic ooze when annoyed, but when diluted, were used in some magical cleaning solutions.
Classified as an XXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures should have been no trouble to competent wizards.
- #9Catoblepas/Beast
Keys: Catoblepas · Secondary: Catoblepas's
A Catoblepas was a bull-like creature which had two sharp tusks and a pair of long curled horns. It likely lived in a shallow swamp.
Classification is Unknown
- #10Centaur/Beast
Keys: Centaur · Secondary: Centaurs
A centaur was a magical creature whose head, torso, and arms appeared to be human and were joined to a horse's lower body. They were, however, their own individual species, and thus were not half-breeds. They also had a rich history and were known for being naturally talented in archery, healing magic, divination and astronomy.
Despite possessing "human intelligence", centaurs were classified as Beasts by the British Ministry of Magic, at their own request, as they were unhappy at having to share Being status with hags and vampires, known dark creatures.
Like horses, centaurs could come in a variety of colours, ranging from deep black to white. A centaur by the name of Firenze had white-blonde hair, a body light in colour, and possessed astonishingly blue eyes; Magorian on the other hand possessed black hair and was chestnut in colour. Centaurs had the body of a horse, and the torso, arms, and head of a human.
Centaurs were not in fact half-breeds, but an entirely different species on their own.
Classified as an XXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were dangerous and required special knowledge, and only trained wizards should handle them. This could also classify creatures that were endangered or just too difficult to capture, rather than being dangerous.
- #11Chimaera/Beast
Keys: Chimaera · Secondary: Chimaeras
A Chimaera was a type of hybrid animal and a violent magical beast native to Greece.
The Chimaera was a vicious, bloodthirsty beast with a lion's head, a goat's body and a dragon's tail.
Their eggs were classified as Class A Non-Tradeable Materials.
Catergorized as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures are known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #12Chizpurfle/Beast
Keys: Chizpurfle · Secondary: Chizpurfles
The Chizpurfle was a type of very small magical parasite. Crab-like in appearance, this beast could grow up to a twentieth of an inch including its fangs. They were attracted to sources of magic and were commonly found in the fur and feathers of Crups and Augureys, respectively. The carapaces and fangs of the Chizpurfle were used in potion-making.
Classified as an XX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were generally harmless and could be domesticated.
- #13Chupacabra/Beast
Keys: Chupacabra · Secondary: Chupacabras
The Chupacabra was a part-lizard, part-homunculus, blood-sucking magical beast native to the Americas.
The Chupacabra had six legs, multiple spines, and several sharp teeth. It had blue markings with red rings on its body.
Classification is Unknown
- #14Clabbert/Beast
Keys: Clabbert · Secondary: Clabberts
A Clabbert was a magical tree-dwelling beast that resembled a cross between a monkey and a frog. Its pustules were used in Potion-making.
Its smooth skin was mottled green, and it had short horns and a wide grinning mouth full of razor sharp teeth. Its long arms and webbed hands and feet allowed it to move gracefully through the trees. On the Clabbert's forehead was a large pustule which flashed red when the Clabbert sensed danger. It fed on small lizards and birds.
The Clabbert was generally found in the southern states of America, but can now be found worldwide. American wizards and witches used to keep Clabberts to give them early warning about approaching Muggles. The International Confederation of Wizards were forced to introduce fines to stop this. Despite looking nice at night, a tree full of glowing Clabbert pustules caused curious Non-magical neighbours to wonder why the Wizards still had their Christmas lights up in June.
Classified as an XX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were generally harmless and could be domesticated.
- #15Crup/Beast
Keys: Crup · Secondary: Crups
A Crup was a wizard-bred dog that originated in the southeast of England.
The Crup strongly resembled a Jack Russell terrier, except that a Crup had a forked tail. They were clearly wizard-bred dogs since they were extremely loyal to wizards, and ferocious toward Muggles and Squibs. Crups were great scavengers, eating everything from gnomes to old tyres.
A group of Crups was known as a "pack". Crup puppies were known as cruppies.
Crup owners were required by British wizarding law to remove the forked tail of the animal when it was six to eight weeks old, using a painless Severing Charm, in case they were noticed by Muggles. A licence from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures also had to be obtained, and the owner had to pass a test to show that they were able to control the animal in Muggle-inhabited areas.
Classified as an XXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures should have been no trouble to competent wizards.
- #16Demiguise/Beast
Keys: Demiguise · Secondary: Demiguises
The Demiguise was a peaceful, herbivorous magical beast that could make itself invisible and tell the future, both abilities which made it very sought-after. However, it was hard to catch.
It could be found in the Far East, but only wizards and witches trained in their capture could even see them. It resembled a cross between a sloth and an ape with large, black eyes and long, silky hair.
Demiguise pelts were highly sought after as the hair can be woven into Invisibility Cloaks. Cloaks made from their hair eventually turned opaque, losing their invisibility effects as time passed.
Demiguises had precognitive sight, so that the only way to catch them was to do something completely unpredictable.
The Demiguise's ability to make itself invisible was used to symbolise the number zero, in the runic alphabet.
Tincture of Demiguise could be extracted from Demiguises and used as a potion ingredient.
Classified as an XXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were dangerous and required special knowledge, and only trained wizards should handle them. This could also classify creatures that were endangered or just too difficult to capture, rather than being dangerous.
- #17Diricawl/Beast
Keys: Diricawl · Secondary: Dodos, Dodo, Diricawls
The Diricawl (known to Muggles as the Dodo) was a plump, fluffy-feathered and flightless magical bird, native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It was capable of disappearing and reappearing elsewhere, except when under the effects of Levioso. Diricawl eggs were green in colour.
Although Muggles believed this bird to be extinct, in reality it existed and had the ability to disappear and reappear elsewhere as a means of escaping danger, similar to Apparition, of which Muggles remained unaware. The International Confederation of Wizards had not seen fit to reveal that the animal still existed because it seemed to have raised Muggle awareness of the consequences of indiscriminately slaying their fellow creatures.
Classified as an XX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were generally harmless and could be domesticated.
- #18Double-ended newt/Beast
Keys: Double-ended newt · Secondary: Double-ended newts
The double-ended newt was a magical beast consisting of two newts sharing the same body. They tended to swim around a lot and preferred to eat algae. Double-ended newts were often kept as pets by wizards and witches, and could be purchased from the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley.
Classification is Unknown.
- #19Doxy/Beast
Keys: Doxy · Secondary: Doxies, Doxys
The Doxy, sometimes referred to as the Biting Fairy, was a small fairy-like magical beast, sometimes mistaken for a fairy.
The Doxy was covered in coarse black hair, and had an additional set of arms and legs. Doxies had shiny beetle-like wings, and a double row of sharp teeth. If bitten, a wizard or witch should take an antidote immediately, as their venom was highly poisonous. Doxies buried their eggs underground, and Doxy Queens could lay up to five-hundred at once. The eggs generally hatched in two to three weeks. Doxies also possessed a chameleon-like tongue that they could extend to catch and eat smaller prey, such as Billywigs.
Doxies were considered pests. They could infest houses, taking up residence in the draperies. Removing them required a good supply of Doxycide. Alternatively, they could be dispatched with a simple Knockback Jinx, as Doxies were particularly vulnerable to it, excluding the queens, which were more resistant.
Classified as an XXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures should have been no trouble to competent wizards.
- #20Dragon/Antipodean Opaleye/Beast
Keys: Antipodean Opaleye · Secondary: Antipodean Opaleye Dragon
The Antipodean Opaleye was a breed of dragon native to New Zealand. It was known to migrate to Australia in search of territory.
It resided in valleys, which was unusual as dragons typically resided on mountains. It was generally considered one of the most beautiful dragons, with pearly scales that lined its body, and glittering multi-coloured eyes that had no pupils. The Opaleye's eggs were pale grey and had been known to be mistaken by Muggles for fossils, and its flame was vivid red.
The Opaleye was not particularly aggressive, rarely killing unless it was hungry. Its prey of choice was sheep, but it had been known to attack larger animals.
This breed of dragon was a loyal creature and the least dangerous and deadly dragon of all.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #21Dragon/Catalonian Fireball/Beast
Keys: Catalonian Fireball · Secondary: Catalonian Fireball Dragon
The Catalonian Fireball was a breed of dragon from Catalonia, Spain.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #22Dragon/Chinese Fireball/Beast
Keys: Chinese Fireball · Secondary: Liondragon, Chinese Fireball Dragon
The Chinese Fireball, also known as the Liondragon, was a dragon native to China, which was named for the rounded balls of flame that shot from its nostrils.
The Fireball was scarlet in colour and smooth scaled, with a fringe of golden spikes around its snub-snouted face and extremely protuberant eyes. They weighed between two and four tons.
Its name was derived from the mushroom-shaped flame that came from its nostrils when angered, along with the large mushroom-shaped flame it could shoot from its mouth.
The Fireball was aggressive but, unlike other dragons, it was more tolerant of its own kind, and would sometimes consent to share its territory with up to two other dragons.
They were also said to be very fast and clever (at least for a dragon).
The powdered spikes of the Fireball could be used to brew the Hair-Dying Potion.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #23Dragon/Common Welsh Green/Beast
Keys: Common Welsh Green · Secondary: Common Welsh Green Dragon
The Common Welsh Green, or just Welsh Green, was a dragon native to Wales. It nested in the higher mountain regions, where a reservation had been set up for it. It was a green dragon with a distinctive, musical roar.
This dragon was a relatively subdued breed (except for the rare exception of the Ilfracombe Incident). It preferred to prey mainly on sheep and other small mammals and to avoid human contact altogether. The Welsh Green's roar was rather distinctive and somewhat melodious, and it issued its fire in narrow jets. The eggs of the Common Welsh Green were earthy brown, flecked with green.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #24Dragon/Hebridean Black/Beast
Keys: Hebridean Black · Secondary: Hebridean Black Dragon
The Hebridean Black was a dragon species native to the Hebrides islands of Scotland. It had brilliant purple coloured eyes.
It had dark rough scales, ridges along its back, and a tail tipped with an arrow-shaped spike. The Hebridean Black had brilliant purple eyes, bat-like wings and could grow to be up to thirty feet long. Its favourite food was deer, although it had been known to carry off livestock such as sheep and cattle. It would also hunt other magical beasts such as Graphorns if it was starving or if its preferred prey were unavailable. Despite its generally aggressive nature, it would sometimes spare wizards and witches who showed it some form of compassion, such as liberating it from captivity and returning its stolen egg.
The Hebridean Black was more aggressive than the other dragon native to the British Isles, the Common Welsh Green, and thus required a territory of as much as one hundred square miles each. The MacFusty clan took responsibility for the dragons, and had so done for centuries.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #25Dragon/Hungarian Horntail/Beast
Keys: Hungarian Horntail · Secondary: Hungarian Horntail Dragon
The Hungarian Horntail was a species of dragon native to Hungary, which was considered to be one of the most dangerous dragon breeds, if not the most dangerous. It possessed black scales, a spiked tail, and was lizard-like in appearance.
It had black scales, and was lizard-like in appearance. It also had yellow eyes, with vertical pupils like a cat's, bronze horns and similarly coloured spikes that protruded from its long tail which it would gladly deploy in combat.
The dragon's roar was a yowling, screeching scream, and its flame could reach to about fifty feet. While having a very far reaching flame, the Horntail's breath could reach extremely high temperatures, as it made a stone turn red hot in seconds. Its eggs were cement-coloured and particularly hard-shelled. The Horntail's foods of choice included cattle, sheep, goats, and whenever possible, humans.
Horntails were also known for being one of the most vicious and aggressive breeds of dragon, and that was saying something since all dragons were known to be ferocious. This breed was especially aggressive when protecting their young. Young ones were noted to be quicker and more vicious, making them even more dangerous.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #26Dragon/Norwegian Ridgeback/Beast
Keys: Norwegian Ridgeback · Secondary: Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon
The Norwegian Ridgeback was a species of dragon that was native to Norway, and its typical habitat was the Northern mountains. It was said to physically resemble a Hungarian Horntail.
It resembled the Hungarian Horntail, except for the black ridges on its back, the browner texture in its scales, and its less hostile attitude. It had venomous fangs, and its food of choice was large mammals, including aquatic mammals, which was unusual for a dragon. Its eggs were black, and young Ridgebacks developed the ability to shoot flame earlier than any other breeds (around one to three months). Female Ridgebacks were generally more ferocious than the males.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #27Dragon/Peruvian Vipertooth/Beast
Keys: Peruvian Vipertooth · Secondary: Peruvian Vipertooth Dragon
The Peruvian Vipertooth was a copper-coloured dragon native to eastern and north-eastern Peru.
The disease Dragon Pox was originally contracted by wizards working closely with Peruvian Vipertooths, before becoming a widespread wizarding disease.
Its scales were smooth and copper-coloured with black ridge-markings and short horns on its head. Like the Norwegian Ridgeback, its fangs were venomous. It was the smallest and fastest known breed of dragon, about fifteen feet (five metres) long and able to conceal itself well from Muggles.
The Vipertooth fed mainly on goats and cows, but was notorious for its particular craving for humans.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #28Dragon/Portuguese Long-Snout/Beast
Keys: Portuguese Long-Snout · Secondary: Portuguese Long-Snout Dragon

Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #29Dragon/Romanian Longhorn/Beast
Keys: Romanian Longhorn · Secondary: Romanian Longhorn Dragon
The Romanian Longhorn was a dragon native to Romania. Its habitat was the Carpathian mountains. The dragon was dark green in colour.
The Romanian Longhorn had dark green scales, and two long, glittering golden horns. The Longhorn preferred to gore its prey with its horns before roasting it. The horns of the Longhorn, when powdered, were highly prized as a potion ingredient, and was a Class B Tradeable Material.
The Longhorn was seen as being very bulky and large. Despite being a fairly medium sized species of dragon they appeared to have larger muscles. It was also the only dragon that had horns that go straight out like a bull. These long horns and the small one just above its nose somewhat resembled the triceratops, a dinosaur known and named for its three horns.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #30Dragon/Swedish Short-Snout/Beast
Keys: Swedish Short-Snout · Secondary: Swedish Short-Snout Dragon
The Swedish Short-Snout was a species of dragon native to the uninhabited mountains of Sweden. It was a silvery blue dragon that breathed a brilliant blue flame.
The scales of the Swedish Short-Snout were silvery blue, and its powerful flame was also a brilliant blue colour, hot enough to reduce timber and bone to ashes in seconds. Its attractive skin was much sought after for the making of gloves and shields.
It preferred to live in wild, uninhabited areas. Since it rarely came into contact with humans, the Short-Snout has less deaths to its name than most dragons. However, the Short-Snout was a dangerous species due to its agile flying and extremely hot fire.
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.
- #31Dragon/Ukrainian Ironbelly/Beast
Keys: Ukrainian Ironbelly · Secondary: Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon
The Ukrainian Ironbelly was a species of dragon native to Ukraine. It was said to be the largest dragon species in the world.
It was a bipedal breed, metallic grey in colour, with an immense wingspan, long talons and rough scales said to be as hard as steel. It was the largest breed of dragon which reaches up to six tonnes, with deep red eyes.
More rotund and slower in flight than other dragons, the Ironbelly was nevertheless extremely dangerous, capable of crushing the dwellings on which it lands.
The Ironbelly could produce jets of flame up to 3,560 degrees Fahrenheit (1960 degrees Celsius).
Classified as an XXXXX beast by the British Ministry of Magic. These creatures were known wizard killers, and were impossible to train or domesticate.

The Dugbog was a marsh-dwelling magical beast found in Europe and the Americas.
It resembled a piece of dead wood while stationary. It had finned paws and sharp teeth, and glided through marshland, feeding on small animals, and occasionally attacking the ankles of humans who ventured into its habitat. Though rare, Dugbogs were capable of attacking and killing larger-bodied animals as well, such as deer and humans. Its favourite food was the Mandrake, and due to this, Mandrake-growers had found their plants nothing more than a bloody mess when they pulled them out of the ground.
Known variations include the Cottengrass, Stoneback, and Great Spined Dugbog.
