   I. Overview

Harrowgate is a bustling trade city on Sec, the Ring of Trade, known for its massive Mandosian doorways that channel goods from across the Underbirth into its sprawling markets. Unlike the Lockettian industrial cities that dominate the ring, Harrowgate is built in the Sombrarian style—warm wood, curved metal, stained glass, and a sense of age that feels almost cosy despite the constant press of commerce. It is a place of passage, of thresholds, of goods and travellers flowing in and out like the tide.

To the merchants of Sec, Harrowgate is a vital hub, a gateway through which contracts are signed and goods are distributed. To the common Kivouachian, it is a city of winding streets and hidden corners, of old bookshops and quiet Laughhouses, of carved wooden facades that lean slightly toward each other as if sharing secrets. It is not the largest city on Sec, nor the wealthiest, but it is among the most beloved. II. Location on Sec

Harrowgate is located on the inner edge of Sec, close to the Mandosian pathways that connect the ring to the Kasino and the other rings of the Hammerlow. Its position makes it a natural hub for trade; goods arriving from the Kasino pass through Harrowgate before being distributed to the rest of Sec, and goods from Sec pass through Harrowgate on their way to the lower rings.

The city is built along a series of canals that flow from the main water channels of Sec, their surfaces lit by bioluminescence that turns the water to liquid sapphire. Bridges arch over the canals—some carved from wood, others from stone, a few formed from the long, blunted torsos of conquered serpents. The streets are cobblestone, worn smooth by centuries of use, and they wind and curve in ways that seem almost deliberate, as if the city grew organically rather than being planned. III. Architecture and Aesthetic

Harrowgate is Sombrarian through and through. The buildings are constructed from rich dark wood, their frames licked by swirling metal that catches the blue light of Sec and turns it to honey and gold. Stained-glass windows are everywhere, bleeding coloured light onto the streets—crimson, amber, emerald, sapphire. The glass is thick and jewel-like, set into frames of black metal, and the scenes it depicts are not of grand battles or political triumphs but of everyday life: merchants trading, Fowlers playing, Kivouachians drinking in Laughhouses.

The city's most distinctive feature is its Mandosian doorways. Unlike the stark, functional arches found elsewhere, Harrowgate's doorways are carved and decorated, their frames adorned with scenes of commerce and travel. The largest of them, known as the Merchant's Arch, stands at the heart of the city, its surface covered in the signatures of traders who have passed through it over the centuries. It is said that a contract signed beneath the Merchant's Arch is blessed by luck, though more practical Kivouachians attribute the success to the quality of the goods rather than the location.

The central market square is a wide, open space surrounded by tall, leaning buildings with overhanging upper floors that almost touch across the street. The light here is filtered through a canopy of stained glass that spans the square, turning the blue glow of Sec into a mosaic of colour. Stalls and carts fill the square, their merchants hawking everything from spices to silks, from clockwork toys to fresh meat. The air smells of cinnamon, ink, and the faint sweetness of spiced wine. IV. The Canals

Water is the lifeblood of Harrowgate. Canals branch off from the main channels of Sec, winding through the city like silver veins. The water is clear and cold, lit from below by bioluminescence that turns it to liquid gemstone. Small boats carry goods and travellers from one end of the city to the other, their captains navigating the winding waterways with practised ease.

The canals are lined with warehouses and workshops, their loading docks busy with the comings and goings of cargo. Here, crates of erillion are unloaded from boats and carried to the trading houses; there, bolts of shadowcatcher silk are loaded onto barges bound for the Kasino. The water is never still, never silent. It hums with the motion of commerce.

Along the banks, Kivouachians gather to drink and talk. Small Laughhouses and Chopshops line the waterways, their windows open to the water, their patrons spilling out onto the docks. The light from the stained glass reflects off the water, turning the canals into rivers of colour. V. The Markets

The markets of Harrowgate are famous across Sec. Unlike the grand trading houses of the wealthier cities, Harrowgate's markets are open, accessible, and chaotic. Anyone can set up a stall, so long as they pay their fees and abide by the rules. The result is a riot of colour and sound, a place where the exotic and the mundane sit side by side.

The Spice Quarter is a maze of narrow alleys where the air is thick with the scent of cumin, cinnamon, and stranger spices from beyond the Madness Frontier. The merchants here are secretive, their faces hidden behind scarves and masks, their goods traded in whispers. It is said that anything can be found in the Spice Quarter, if you know where to look and what to offer.

The Weaver's Row is a street of tailors and cloth merchants, their windows filled with bolts of shadowcatcher silk, halo cotton, and purpendire. The light here is softer, filtered through the fabric, and the air smells of wool and linen. It is a place of quiet commerce, where deals are made over cups of tea and the rustle of fabric.

The Clockwork Bazaar is a collection of stalls selling toys, automata, and mechanical curiosities. The merchants here are Tinkers, their hands stained with oil and grease, their stalls filled with whirring, clicking devices. Children gather here, their eyes wide with wonder, while adults haggle over the price of a clockwork bird or a musical box. VI. The Mandosian Doorways

Harrowgate's Mandosian doorways are its greatest asset. The Merchant's Arch is the largest, a towering arch of dark wood and swirling metal, its surface carved with scenes of trade and travel. It connects Harrowgate to the Kasino town of Harrowton, across Lockton Black, allowing goods to flow quickly between the ring and the outer shell.

Smaller doorways dot the city, each one a gateway to a different destination. The Silk Gate leads to the weaver's districts of Thay; the Iron Arch leads to the forges of Caan; the Glassway leads to the workshops of Ol' Frankby. Each doorway is guarded by Bridge Hands, uniformed Kivouachians who check papers and collect fees. The doorways are the lifeblood of Harrowgate, and without them, the city would wither. VII. The People

The Kivouachians of Harrowgate are merchants, traders, and artisans. They are not wealthy like the traders of the grand houses, but they are comfortable, and they take pride in their work. They dress in Sombrarian fashion—leather trousers and waistcoats, bow ties and wide-brimmed hats. They speak with the clipped, clear accents of educated Kivouachians, but there is a warmth to their voices, a friendliness that is rare in the colder cities of Sec.

The city is also home to a population of drifters and travellers, passing through on their way to somewhere else. They stay for a night, a week, a month, and then they move on. Harrowgate does not hold them; it simply offers them a place to rest before they continue their journeys. VIII. The Gutrush Laughhouse

The Gutrush Laughhouse is one of Harrowgate's most famous establishments. It is a large, rowdy Laughhouse located on a quiet side street, its stained-glass windows glowing like warm beacons in the blue haze of Sec. The Minstrel, Falstaff, runs it with a gruff kindness and an iron fist, and it is a place where fighters, exiles, and drifters come to drink, debate, and forget. The central pillar, wrapped in shelves of bottles from floor to ceiling, is a landmark in its own right, and the drinks are among the best in the city. IX. The Philosophy of Harrowgate

Harrowgate is a city of thresholds. It is where goods pass from one place to another, where travellers rest before continuing their journeys, where contracts are signed and deals are made. It is not a place of endings; it is a place of beginnings and middles, of the constant flow of commerce and life.

The city does not aspire to greatness. It does not seek to rival the grand trading houses of Sec or the political power of the Thumme. It simply exists, quietly, steadily, doing what it has always done: facilitating trade, welcoming travellers, enduring. It is a Sombrarian city in a Lockettian world—warm, old, and unapologetically itself. X. The View

From the upper windows of the Gutrush, one can see the spires of Harrowgate's buildings, the blue glow of Sec reflecting off their stained-glass windows, the canals winding through the city like silver ribbons. In the distance, the Merchant's Arch glows with the light of folded space, and beyond it, the dark shell of the Kasino curves overhead. The Thumme hangs above, green and distant, and the other rings arc across the sky like bridges to nowhere.

Harrowgate is small, in the grand scheme of things. It is one city among many, on one ring among five, in a sphere of seventy thousand kilometres. But it is home to those who live there, and for them, it is enough. It has always been enough.

   I. Overview

Gutrush Laughhouse is a large and rowdy establishment located in the Sombrarian trade city of Harrowgate on Sec, the Ring of Trade. It is a place where merchants, labourers, fighters, exiles, and drifters come to drink, debate, and forget—a rough gem in the crown of Harrowgate's winding streets. Unlike the polished establishments that cater to wealthy traders and government officials, the Gutrush is scarred, honest, and unapologetically rough. The floors are dark with spilled drink, the walls are marked with the scratches of claws and the dents of thrown bottles, and the air is thick with the scent of woodsmoke and strong spirits. But it is neutral ground, and the Minstrel who runs it—a fire-hued bruiser named Falstaff—enforces that neutrality with four arms and a willingness to use anything not nailed down as a weapon.

To the patrons of the Gutrush, the Laughhouse is a home, a refuge, a place where the pressures of trade and the weight of survival are temporarily forgotten. It is not famous like the establishments of Yeshua's Circus, not elegant like the Lullaby Loft. It is a working Kivouachian's Laughhouse, and it is loved for that. II. Location in Harrowgate

The Gutrush is tucked away on a quiet side street off Harrowgate's main thoroughfares, away from the grand trading houses and the bustling markets. It is not a destination for the wealthy; it is a refuge for those who do the work. The approach is a winding cobblestone lane that descends from the higher tiers of the city, passing through districts of warehouses and workshops. The cool blue light of Sec dims slightly here, the crowds thin, and the air carries the scent of metal and ink from the nearby industries.

The Gutrush stands at the end of the lane, its stained-glass windows glowing like warm beacons in the blue haze of the ring. The building leans slightly to the left, settling into its neighbours like a tired traveller resting between two friends. A wooden sign swings above the door, carved with the Laughhouse's name in flowing script, the letters worn smooth by centuries of wind and weather. Beneath the name, in smaller letters, a single line: "Neutral ground. Keep your claws to yourself." III. Architecture and Aesthetic

The Gutrush is built in the Sombrarian style—rich dark wood, warmly carved, licked by swirling metal frames. The building is large and sprawling, its walls adorned with stained-glass windows that bleed coloured light onto the street—honey, blood, forest green, sapphire blue. The windows depict scenes of Kivic history: the War of the Ladies, the construction of the Underbirth, the Trade Revolution. The glass is cracked in places, and some of the scenes are obscured by age and neglect, but the colours remain vibrant, casting long shadows across the worn cobblestones.

The main floor is dominated by a single architectural feature: the central pillar. It rises from the floor to the ceiling, a massive column of dark carved wood, its surface adorned with the signatures of patrons who have passed through over the centuries—names and dates carved into the wood, overlapping like layers of forgotten history. Wrapped around the pillar are four large shelves that climb all the way to the rafters, their brackets shaped like curling vines and leaping beasts.

These shelves hold the Gutrush's collection of drinks—hundreds of bottles, perhaps thousands, in every colour and shape imaginable. Glass catches the cool blue light of Sec, and the bottles seem to glow from within, a constellation of liquid gems against the dark wood. The lowest shelves hold the common drinks—grins and puckers in simple clay bottles. The higher shelves hold the rarer vintages—twisted lips in frosted glass, aquavein pucker in crystal decanters, and near the very top, the bottles that Falstaff keeps for special occasions, their contents a mystery to all but him.

Surrounding the pillar is the bar—a circular counter of polished dark wood that follows the curve of the shelves, allowing patrons to approach from any angle. The bar is scarred and worn, its surface marked by years of claws, glasses, and the occasional thrown bottle. A brass rail runs along the base, worn bright by countless feet. Behind the bar, Falstaff and his Jesters move with practised efficiency, reaching up to the shelves on ladders, pulling down bottles, pouring drinks, and sliding them across the wood to waiting hands. IV. The Minstrel

The Minstrel of the Gutrush is Falstaff, a towering beast of fire-hued muscle and scarred survival. He stands just under ten feet tall, with four arms, three tails, and a missing finger on his lower left hand—taken in a fight he still dreams about. He wears a long leather coat, patched and stitched from years of wear, its silk-lined interior heavy with hidden pockets. He smells faintly of woodsmoke and strong spirits, and his golden eyes miss nothing.

Falstaff rules the Gutrush with a gruff kindness and an iron fist. He keeps his promises like sacred law, and he expects his patrons to do the same. Loyalty is his compass; betrayal is the one sin he does not forgive. He is not a soft Minstrel, but he is a fair one. Regulars know that if they follow the rules, Falstaff will move mountains to protect them.

For a hundred stanzas, Falstaff has harboured a quiet ambition: to build a circus of his own, like Yeshua's but smaller, rougher, more honest. He has made no deals yet, signed no contracts. He waits, plans, and dreams. The Gutrush is his present; the circus is his future. V. The Jesters

The Jesters of the Gutrush are a motley crew, each bringing their own skills and personality to the bar.

Vex is the most senior Jester, a lean grey-furred fox with quick hands and a quicker tongue. He knows every regular by name, remembers their drinks, and can settle a dispute with a single, well-placed word. He never raises his voice, but everyone listens when he speaks.

Mila is a stocky badger with a warm smile and a fierce temper. She is the brawler of the Jesters, the one who steps in when words are not enough. She has thrown more rowdy patrons out the door than anyone else, but she always does it with a wink and a laugh.

Zill is a serpentine Kivouachian with smooth, iridescent scales that shift from deep emerald to burnt copper. He has no arms, but his prehensile tail is quick enough to catch a falling glass. He is quiet and shy, but his dry wit has ended more than one heated argument.

Vesper is a small, bat-like Kivouachian with fur the colour of midnight and vast leathery wings folded tight against her back. She hangs upside down from the ceiling beams during slow hours, watching the room with patient, knowing eyes. She is the Gutrush's ears, sensitive to every whisper and threat.

Thorn is a stocky, horned Kivouachian with the build of a boulder and the face of a kindly old ram. He is the heavy lifter, the one who carries the heavy kegs and handles the roughest customers. He never raises his voice, never loses his temper, never seems to hurry. VI. The Atmosphere

The Gutrush is loud, warm, and slightly dangerous. The light is a mix of the cool blue glow of Sec filtering through the windows and the warm honey and gold from the stained glass, with splashes of red and purple from the bottles on the shelves. Shadows gather in the corners, where the light does not reach, and the carved faces on the pillars seem to watch the patrons with knowing eyes.

The air smells of woodsmoke, spiced spirits, and the faint metallic tang of old blood. The floors are dark and sticky, worn smooth by countless feet, and the walls are lined with booths and tables where patrons sit, drink, and argue. The booths are upholstered in worn leather, cracked and stained, and the tables are scarred with the marks of claws and the rings of countless glasses.

The conversations are not refined. The patrons of the Gutrush are not politicians or wealthy traders; they are labourers, fighters, drifters, exiles. They argue about the latest news from the Inkhouses, about the fights at the Bloodhall, about the best way to skin a Fowler or the worst way to die. The debates are loud, the laughter is louder, and the wit is sharp enough to draw blood.

But the Gutrush is neutral ground. No blood is spilled within its walls—not if the spiller wants to leave with their head still attached. Falstaff enforces this rule with his four arms, his extendable claws, and his willingness to use anything not nailed down as a weapon. The patrons know this, respect it, and abide by it. VII. The Drinks

The Gutrush offers a wide variety of alcoholic beverages, from common grins and puckers to rare vintages that Falstaff keeps locked in the highest shelves. The Jesters climb ladders to reach the bottles, their movements sure and practised.

The most popular drink is blacktar grin—a thick, dark spirit that warms the belly and loosens the tongue, served in heavy clay mugs. Twisted lip is a sweeter drink, popular among the younger crowd, served in slender glasses of frosted glass. Pucker with a touch of tailire is a sharp, acidic choice for those who prefer a cleaner taste, served in crystal decanters.

Falstaff's private reserve is kept on the highest shelves, accessible only by a ladder that he keeps behind the bar. The bottles in this collection are rare and valuable, some dating back to the early days of the Underbirth. He does not sell these drinks; he trades them, for favours, for information, for the kind of currency that cannot be counted. VIII. The Patrons

The patrons of the Gutrush come from every corner of the Underbirth, though most are from Harrowgate and the surrounding districts of Sec. Some are regulars, their faces as familiar as the scarred wood of the bar. They have their own seats, their own mugs, their own standing orders. The Jesters know their names, their stories, their secrets.

Others are drifters, passing through on their way to somewhere else. They stay for a night, a week, a month, and then they move on. The Gutrush does not hold them; it simply offers them a place to rest.

The most famous regular is Gab, a creature with her own secrets and her own scars. She sits in the same booth every night, nursing a glass of black grin, watching the door. She does not speak of her past, does not share her history, does not answer questions. Falstaff does not ask. They drink, they talk, they sit in companionable silence. IX.

The view is not grand, but it is honest. The Gutrush is a place of the middle, of the working, of the everyday. It does not aspire to greatness; it simply endures. X. The Philosophy of the Gutrush

The Gutrush is not a place of illusions. It does not pretend to be something it is not. It is rough, scarred, and honest—a Laughhouse for those who have seen the worst of the Underbirth and survived. The drinks are strong, the conversations are sharp, and the peace is enforced by four arms and a willingness to use them.

Falstaff believes in keeping his word. It is a simple philosophy, but a hard one. He has learned that promises are the only currency that cannot be counterfeited, that a reputation for honesty is worth more than any amount of gold or silk. He does not cheat. He does not lie. He does not forget.

The Gutrush endures because the need for honest places endures. It will last as long as Falstaff lasts, as long as his patrons need a place to drink and forget, as long as the Underbirth needs a neutral ground where fighters, exiles, and drifters can sit together in peace. It is not a beautiful place, not an elegant place. But it is honest, and in the Underbirth, honesty is the rarest and most valuable commodity of all.

   I. Overview

Vex is the most senior Jester at the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, a lean, sharp-featured Kivouachian who has poured drinks and settled disputes for longer than most patrons have been alive. He is the steady hand behind the bar, the one who knows every regular by name, remembers their drinks, and can calm a brewing fight with a single, well-placed word. He is not the Minstrel—that honour belongs to Falstaff—but he is the Minstrel's right hand, the engine that keeps the Gutrush running.

To the patrons of the Gutrush, Vex is a familiar and comforting presence. He is not warm, not exactly, but he is consistent. He never raises his voice, but everyone listens when he speaks. He is the heart of the Laughhouse, in his own quiet way. II. Appearance

Vex is lean and angular, his body built for speed and precision rather than brute strength. His fur is a soft silver-grey, darker along his spine and lighter on his chest and belly, giving him a sleek, almost metallic sheen under the coloured light of the Gutrush's stained-glass windows. The fur is short and dense, lying flat against his frame.

His face is narrow and sharp, tapering to a pointed muzzle, and his ears are long and mobile, swivelling independently to track the sounds of the room. The patterns around his eyes are dark and swirling, like carnival paint, framing his amber irises. When the light shifts, his pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian. His whiskers are fine and pale, twitching with every shift in the air.

Three small navels mark his belly beneath his worn leather waistcoat. His claws are dark and sharp, kept short for the work of pouring drinks and handling glassware, and his fingers are long and dexterous, moving with the quick, sure grace of a musician.

He dresses in simple Sombrarian fashion: a dark waistcoat of aged leather over a plain white shirt, black trousers held up by a wide leather belt, and sturdy boots that have walked the length of Harrowgate a hundred times over. The waistcoat is scarred and worn, its surface marked by years of leaning against the bar, but it is clean and well-maintained. He wears no jewellery, no chains, no adornment. His only decoration is the Gutrush's emblem stitched into the breast of his waistcoat—a stylised bottle surrounded by flames. III. History

Vex has worked at the Gutrush for decades. He came to Harrowgate as a young Fowler, drifting from town to town, looking for work. Falstaff took him in, gave him a chance, and taught him the trade. Vex has been at the Gutrush ever since.

He does not speak of his past. Where he came from, what he did before the Gutrush, who he was—these are secrets he keeps close. The regulars have learned not to ask. Vex is a creature of the present, of the bar, of the drink he is pouring and the dispute he is settling. The past is the past, and the past is best left there. IV. Personality and Temperament

Vex is calm, patient, and dry. He rarely smiles, but his eyes crinkle with amusement when a patron tells a particularly good joke. He never raises his voice, even when the room is loud and the arguments are heated. He has a quiet authority that comes from decades of experience, and regulars know that when Vex speaks, it is worth listening.

He is not cold, but he is not warm. He is professional, efficient, and unfailingly polite. He remembers every regular's name, their drink, their seat, their story. He knows when to offer a word of advice and when to stay silent. He knows when to pour another drink and when to cut a patron off.

He has a dry wit that can cut deeper than most blades, but he uses it sparingly. A single, perfectly timed observation from Vex has ended more than one heated argument, leaving the disputants blinking in confused silence. V. Role at the Gutrush

As the most senior Jester, Vex is responsible for training the newer Jesters, managing the bar during Falstaff's absences, and ensuring that the Gutrush runs smoothly. He knows the inventory better than anyone, can tell you exactly how many bottles of blacktar grin are left without looking, and can mix any drink on the menu from memory.

He also serves as Falstaff's eyes and ears. He watches the room, notes the tensions, and reports anything unusual to the Minstrel. He is the first line of defence against trouble, and his calm presence often defuses situations before they escalate.

When Falstaff is away—dealing with a supplier, handling a contract, or simply taking a rare night off—Vex runs the Gutrush. He does not have Falstaff's physical presence, but he has the authority, and the regulars respect it. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Vex's employer, mentor, and friend. Vex respects Falstaff deeply, and he is loyal to him without question. He has seen the Minstrel at his worst—grieving, raging, broken—and he has never wavered. He is the one who keeps the Gutrush running when Falstaff cannot. He knows of Falstaff's dream to build a circus, and though he rarely speaks of it, he hopes to see it come true.

Mila is Vex's counterpart, the brawler to his diplomat. They have worked together for decades, and they have a comfortable, unspoken understanding. She handles the rough customers; he handles the smooth. Together, they keep the Gutrush in balance.

Rhen is Vex's protégé, the young Kivouachian he is training to be a Jester. Vex is patient with him, though he sometimes despairs at the boy's clumsiness. He sees potential in Rhen, a spark of something that reminds him of himself, long ago. VII. Skills and Abilities

Vex is a master of the Jester's trade. He can pour a drink without spilling a drop, mix a cocktail from memory, and settle a dispute with a single, well-chosen word. His hands are quick and sure, and he never drops a glass.

He is also a skilled observer. He notices the little things—the tension in a patron's shoulders, the flicker of a glance, the way a voice wavers. He uses this skill to anticipate trouble before it starts, to offer a drink to a patron who needs it, to steer a conversation away from dangerous ground.

He is not a fighter. He has claws, and he knows how to use them, but he prefers to avoid violence. When words fail, he calls for Mila or Thorn. VIII. The Philosophy of Vex

Vex believes in the Gutrush. He believes in the simple, honest work of pouring drinks and keeping the peace. He does not aspire to greatness, does not dream of running his own Laughhouse, does not crave power or wealth. He wants only to do his job, to do it well, and to go home at the end of the night.

He believes in patience. A drink poured too quickly is a drink spilled. A word spoken too soon is a word regretted. He has learned to wait, to watch, to let the moment settle before acting.

He believes in loyalty. Falstaff gave him a chance when he had nothing. He has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and he will continue to repay it for as long as he lives. IX. The Legacy of Vex

Vex is not a famous Kivouachian. His name is not carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses do not write of him, and the Voices do not praise him. He is a Jester, a bartender, a servant—one of the quiet Kivouachians who keep the city running while others take the credit.

But the Gutrush remembers. The regulars who sit at his bar remember the way he pours their drinks without being asked, the way he listens to their troubles without judgment, the way he always knows exactly what to say. Falstaff remembers the decades of loyalty, the steady hand that never wavers, the friend who keeps the Laughhouse alive when the Minstrel himself cannot. Mila remembers the quiet conversations after closing, the shared laughter, the partnership that makes the Gutrush more than just a place to drink.

Vex has touched more lives than he knows. Every dispute he settles, every drink he pours, every kind word he offers—these are threads in the tapestry of Harrowgate, small and invisible but essential. The city does not see them, but the city would be poorer without them.

When Vex finally steps down—if he ever does—the Gutrush will not be the same. The younger Jesters will try to fill his place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap behind the bar, a silence where his dry wit used to be. The regulars will tell stories about him, the way they tell stories about all the great Jesters who have served at the Gutrush. His name will be spoken in the same breath as the old legends, passed down from patron to patron, generation to generation.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Vex will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Jester Behind the Bar

Vex is a lean, sharp-featured Kivouachian behind a worn wooden bar, his silver-grey fur gleaming in the coloured light, his amber eyes watching the room with quiet patience. He is not a hero, not a villain. He is a Jester, and Jesters serve. He has served the Gutrush for decades, and he will serve it for as long as he can.

He does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. He seeks only to do his job, to do it well, and to keep the peace. It is enough. It has always been enough.

   I. Overview

Mila is a Jester at the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, a stocky, broad-shouldered Kivouachian with a warm smile and a fierce temper. She is the brawler of the Jesters, the one who steps in when words are not enough. She has thrown more rowdy patrons out the door than anyone else, but she always does it with a wink and a laugh. She is not the Minstrel—that honour belongs to Falstaff—and she is not the senior Jester—that role belongs to Vex—but she is the muscle, the enforcer, the one who reminds the patrons that the Gutrush's peace is not negotiable.

To the regulars of the Gutrush, Mila is a familiar and beloved presence. She is warm where Vex is dry, fierce where Falstaff is brooding. She laughs loudly, drinks deeply, and fights ferociously. She is the heart of the Laughhouse, in her own loud, messy way. II. Appearance

Mila is stocky and solid, her body built for brawling rather than speed. Her fur is a rich blend of black and silver, with broad, jagged stripes running down her face and across her back. The fur is thick and coarse, standing slightly away from her body, giving her a bristling, formidable silhouette. Her face is broad and rounded, with a strong jaw and a wide, expressive mouth.

The patterns around her eyes swirl like dark carnival paint, intricate spirals that draw the gaze inward to her deep brown irises. When the light shifts, her pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian. Her ears are small and rounded, set low on her head, and they twitch when she is amused or annoyed.

Her body is thick and solid, built for brawling. Her shoulders are broad, her arms are heavy with muscle, and her hands are wide and calloused, the fingers thick and strong. Three small navels mark her belly beneath her worn leather tunic. Her claws are thick and sharp, kept long enough to be dangerous but short enough to handle glassware.

She dresses in simple Sombrarian fashion: a sleeveless tunic of dark brown leather, black trousers held up by a wide leather belt, and heavy boots that have kicked more than a few troublemakers out the door. The tunic is scarred and scuffed, marked by years of rough work, but it is clean and well-maintained. A brass ring gleams in her left ear, and a chain hangs from her belt, jingling when she moves.

Her face is kind when she is not angry, which is most of the time. Her smile is wide and genuine, crinkling the corners of her eyes and showing a row of strong, white teeth. Her laugh is loud enough to fill the whole Laughhouse, a booming, infectious sound that sets the whole room laughing with her. But when her temper flares, her eyes go flat, her lips press together into a thin line, and her claws extend. Regulars know that look. They know to step back. III. History

Mila came to Harrowgate as a young adult, fresh from a falling-out with a previous employer. The details are vague—she does not speak of it, and the regulars have learned not to ask—but it is clear that she left behind something she loved. She arrived at the Gutrush with nothing but the clothes on her back and a chip on her shoulder.

Falstaff took her in, gave her a chance, and taught her the trade. She started as a dishwasher, worked her way up to server, and eventually became a Jester. She has been at the Gutrush for decades, and she has no intention of leaving.

She does not speak of her past. What she did before the Gutrush, where she came from, who she was—these are secrets she keeps close. The regulars respect that. They know that Mila is a creature of the present, of the bar, of the next drink and the next fight. IV. Personality and Temperament

Mila is warm, loud, and fiercely loyal. She laughs easily, drinks heartily, and fights without hesitation. She is not afraid of conflict—she welcomes it, in a way—but she does not seek it out. She is a defender, not an aggressor. She throws patrons out when they break the rules, not because she enjoys it, but because the rules are what keep the Gutrush safe.

She has a fierce temper, but it is not easily triggered. She is patient with the young and the foolish, tolerant of the drunk and the obnoxious. But when someone threatens her friends, when someone refuses to listen to reason, when someone draws blood on neutral ground—her temper flares, and her claws come out.

She is loyal to Falstaff, to Vex, to the Gutrush. She would fight for them, kill for them, die for them. The regulars know this. They know that Mila is not just a Jester; she is a protector. V. Role at the Gutrush

As the brawler of the Jesters, Mila is responsible for handling the rough customers. When words fail—when Vex's dry wit cannot calm a situation, when a patron refuses to leave, when a fight breaks out—Mila steps in. She throws them out, usually with a laugh and a wink, but always with force.

She also helps with the heavy lifting—kegs, crates, furniture—and she is the one who stands guard when Falstaff is away. She is not the senior Jester, but she is the one the other Jesters turn to when things get dangerous.

She trains the younger Jesters in the physical aspects of the job: how to break up a fight without getting hurt, how to throw a patron out without causing permanent damage, how to stand your ground when someone bigger than you is yelling in your face. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Mila's employer and friend. She respects him deeply, and she is fiercely loyal to him. She has seen him at his worst—grieving, raging, broken—and she has never wavered. She knows about his dream of building a circus, and she hopes to be there when it finally happens, throwing out the first rowdy patron.

Vex is Mila's counterpart, the diplomat to her brawler. They have worked together for decades, and they have a comfortable, unspoken understanding. She handles the rough customers; he handles the smooth. Together, they keep the Gutrush in balance. They bicker like an old married couple, but they love each other like family.

Rhen is the young Kivouachian Mila is helping to train. She is patient with him, though she sometimes despairs at his lack of fighting instinct. She sees potential in him, a spark of something that reminds her of herself, long ago. VII. Skills and Abilities

Mila is a skilled brawler. She knows how to throw a punch, how to take a hit, and how to use her weight to her advantage. She is not a trained fighter—she has no Yolshen stripes, no formal combat training—but she has decades of experience, and experience counts.

She is also a skilled Jester. She can pour a drink, mix a cocktail, and keep the bar running. She is not as fast as Vex, not as precise, but she is competent and reliable.

Her greatest skill is her presence. When Mila stands up, people notice. When Mila speaks, people listen. When Mila steps between two arguing patrons, the argument usually stops. She has a gift for defusing tension, not with words, but with sheer physical authority. VIII. The Philosophy of Mila

Mila believes in the Gutrush. She believes in the simple, honest work of keeping the peace and serving the drinks. She does not aspire to greatness, does not dream of running her own Laughhouse, does not crave power or wealth. She wants only to do her job, to do it well, and to protect the people she loves.

She believes in loyalty. Falstaff gave her a chance when she had nothing. She has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and she will continue to repay it for as long as she lives.

She believes in action. Words are fine, but sometimes words are not enough. Sometimes you need to throw someone out the door. Mila is not afraid to act, and that is what makes her valuable. IX. The Legacy of Mila

Mila is not a famous Kivouachian. Her name is not carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses do not write of her, and the Voices do not praise her. She is a Jester, a brawler, a protector—one of the quiet Kivouachians who keep the city running while others take the credit.

But the Gutrush remembers. The regulars who have seen her throw out a troublemaker with a wink and a laugh remember the way she made them feel safe. Falstaff remembers the decades of loyalty, the fierce protection, the friend who never let him down. Vex remembers the quiet conversations after closing, the shared laughter, the partnership that made the Gutrush more than just a place to drink.

Mila has touched more lives than she knows. Every fight she stopped, every threat she neutralized, every patron she protected—these are threads in the tapestry of Harrowgate, small and invisible but essential. The city does not see them, but the city would be poorer without them.

When Mila finally steps down—if she ever does—the Gutrush will not be the same. The younger Jesters will try to fill her place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a silence where her laugh used to be. The regulars will tell stories about her, the way they tell stories about all the great Jesters who have served at the Gutrush. Her name will be spoken in the same breath as the old legends, passed down from patron to patron, generation to generation.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Mila will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Jester Behind the Bar

Mila is a stocky, broad-shouldered Kivouachian behind a worn wooden bar, her black-and-silver fur bristling, her warm smile ready to become a fierce grin. She is not a hero, not a villain. She is a Jester, and Jesters serve. She has served the Gutrush for decades, and she will serve it for as long as she can.

She does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. She seeks only to do her job, to do it well, and to protect the people she loves. It is enough. It has always been enough.

   I. Overview

Zill is a Jester at the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, a serpentine Kivouachian with smooth, iridescent scales and a quiet, watchful nature. He is the silent one behind the bar, the one who rarely speaks but notices everything. He has no arms, but his prehensile tail is quick enough to catch a falling glass, and his dry wit has ended more than one heated argument with a single, perfectly timed observation. He is not the Minstrel—that honour belongs to Falstaff—and he is not the senior Jester—that role belongs to Vex—but he is the observer, the quiet presence, the one who sees what others miss.

To the regulars of the Gutrush, Zill is an enigma. He does not chat, does not laugh, does not share stories. He watches, he listens, he pours. But his presence is comforting, in its own way. He is the still point in the turning room, the calm in the storm of noise and motion. II. Appearance

Zill is a serpentine Kivouachian with a long, sinuous body that coils around a tall stool behind the bar. His scales are smooth and iridescent, shifting from deep emerald to burnt copper depending on the light. When the blue glow of Sec catches him, he gleams like polished jade; when the stained-glass windows bleed honey and gold, he glows like aged bronze.

His face is narrow and elegant, with a row of six tiny eyes arranged in a gentle curve across his brow. Each eye is a different shade—amber, jade, copper, onyx—and they move independently, tracking different parts of the room at once. His mouth is a thin line filled with needle-fine teeth, white and sharp. The patterns on his face are delicate, like cracked porcelain, tracing the contours of his jaw and brow.

He has no arms, no legs, no claws. His body is pure muscle and scale, tapering to a pointed tail that he keeps coiled beneath him when not in use. Three small navels mark his belly, barely visible among the iridescent scales. He wears no clothes—there is nothing to clothe—but a leather harness wraps around his chest, holding a small pouch and a ring of keys.

When he moves, he flows. There is no hurry in Zill, no wasted motion. He uncoils, reaches, and recoils with a grace that seems almost hypnotic. III. History

Zill came to Harrowgate from the Innerside, the deep canals where the light is dim and the Dousers rule. He does not speak of his life before the Gutrush—what he did, who he was, why he left—but the scars on his scales tell a story of violence and survival. He arrived at the Gutrush one night, thin and weary, and asked for work.

Falstaff took him in, gave him a chance, and taught him the trade. Zill started as a dishwasher—as much as a creature without arms can wash dishes—and worked his way up to server, then Jester. He has been at the Gutrush for decades, and he has no intention of leaving.

He does not speak of his past. The regulars have learned not to ask. Zill is a creature of the present, of the bar, of the drink he is pouring and the room he is watching. The past is the past, and the past is best left there. IV. Personality and Temperament

Zill is quiet, almost to the point of silence. He rarely speaks, and when he does, his words are few and carefully chosen. He has a dry wit that can cut deeper than most blades, but he uses it sparingly—a single observation, perfectly timed, that leaves the disputants blinking in confused silence.

He is not cold, but he is not warm. He is watchful, patient, and endlessly observant. He notices the little things—the tension in a patron's shoulders, the flicker of a glance, the way a voice wavers. He uses this skill not to manipulate, but to anticipate. He knows when a fight is brewing before the fighters do, and he alerts Vex or Mila before it escalates.

He is loyal to the Gutrush, to Falstaff, to his fellow Jesters. He does not show it with words or gestures, but his actions speak for him. He works tirelessly, asks for nothing, and never complains. V. Role at the Gutrush

As a Jester, Zill is responsible for pouring drinks, cleaning glasses, and keeping the bar running. He cannot carry heavy kegs or break up fights—he has no arms, no leverage—but he is the fastest pourer in the Gutrush, his tail a blur of motion when the crowd is thick.

He also serves as the Gutrush's lookout. His six eyes can track multiple patrons at once, and his sensitive hearing can pick up whispers from across the room. He knows who is armed, who is drunk, who is looking for trouble. He reports to Vex and Falstaff, and his warnings have prevented more than a few disasters.

He is also the keeper of the high shelves. His long body can stretch up the central pillar, his tail reaching for bottles that the other Jesters cannot reach. He climbs with a slow, deliberate grace, never dropping so much as a cork. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Zill's employer and protector. Falstaff gave him a chance when he had nothing, and Zill has never forgotten it. He is loyal to Falstaff without question, and he would do anything to protect the Minstrel and his dream of a circus.

Vex is Zill's counterpart, the diplomat to his observer. They do not speak much—Vex talks enough for both of them—but they have a comfortable understanding. Vex trusts Zill's judgment, and Zill trusts Vex's words.

Mila is the one who handles the fights that Zill predicts. He warns her; she throws the troublemakers out. They have worked together for decades, and they have a silent, efficient partnership. VII. Skills and Abilities

Zill's greatest skill is his observation. His six eyes track the room with a precision that no other Jester can match. He notices the little things—the way a patron's claws tap the bar, the way their eyes dart to the door, the way their voice drops to a whisper. He uses this information to keep the Gutrush safe.

He is also incredibly fast. His tail can catch a falling glass, snatch a bottle from a high shelf, or slide a drink across the bar faster than the eye can follow. He is not strong—he cannot break up fights or carry heavy loads—but he is quick, and quickness has its own value.

He is a skilled climber. His long body can stretch and coil, allowing him to reach the highest shelves without a ladder. He moves with a slow, deliberate grace, never hurrying, never faltering. VIII. The Philosophy of Zill

Zill believes in watching. Words are cheap, gestures can be faked, but a Kivouachian's body does not lie. He has learned to read the room, to see the truth beneath the mask, to anticipate the storm before it breaks.

He believes in loyalty. Falstaff gave him a chance when he had nothing. He has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and he will continue to repay it for as long as he lives.

He believes in silence. Not every thought needs to be spoken, not every observation shared. He keeps his own counsel, and he does not regret the words he does not say. IX. The Legacy of Zill

Zill will not be remembered by the city. His name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of him, and the Voices will not praise him. He is a Jester, a watchman, a silent presence—one of the quiet Kivouachians who keep the city running while others take the credit.

But the Gutrush will remember. The regulars who have seen him catch a falling glass with his tail, who have seen him stretch up the pillar to reach a bottle no one else could reach, who have noticed him watching and understood that they were safe because of him—they will remember. Falstaff will remember the decades of silent loyalty, the watchful eyes, the friend who never asked for anything. Vex will remember the quiet conversations after closing, the shared observations, the partnership that made the Gutrush more than just a place to drink.

Zill has touched more lives than he knows. Every threat he spotted, every fight he prevented, every patron he protected—these are threads in the tapestry of Harrowgate, small and invisible but essential. The city does not see them, but the city would be poorer without them.

When Zill finally leaves—if he ever does—the Gutrush will not be the same. The younger Jesters will try to fill his place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a silence where his quiet presence used to be. The regulars will tell stories about him, the way they tell stories about all the great Jesters who have served at the Gutrush. His name will be spoken in the same breath as the old legends, passed down from patron to patron, generation to generation.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Zill will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Serpent Behind the Bar

Zill is a serpent coiled on a tall stool behind a worn wooden bar, his six eyes watching the room, his tail ready to catch a falling glass. He is not a hero, not a villain. He is a Jester, and Jesters serve. He has served the Gutrush for decades, and he will serve it for as long as he can.

He does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. He seeks only to do his job, to do it well, and to keep the Gutrush safe. It is enough. It has always been enough.

6. #6Vesper

   Keys: Vesper

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   I. Overview

Vesper is a Jester and brewer at the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, a small, dark-furred Kivouachian with vast leathery wings folded tight against her back. She is the Gutrush's ears, sensitive to every whisper, every secret, every threat—and she is the keeper of its drinks, the one who brews the blacktar grin and the twisted lip that keep the patrons coming back. She hangs upside down from the ceiling beams during slow hours, watching the room with patient, knowing eyes. When she drops to the floor, patrons listen.

To the regulars of the Gutrush, Vesper is a strange and slightly unsettling presence. She does not chat, does not laugh, does not share stories. She watches from above, a dark shape against the rafters, her large black eyes reflecting the coloured light of the stained-glass windows. But she is trusted. She is one of Falstaff's own, and her drinks are the best in Harrowgate. II. Appearance

Vesper is small and slight, no larger than a Fowler, though her wingspan stretches much wider than her body. Her fur is the colour of deepest midnight—so dark that it seems to absorb the light, leaving only the suggestion of shape in the shadows. The fur is soft and dense, lying flat against her delicate frame.

Her body is slight and fragile-looking, with long, thin limbs and a short, stubby tail. Her face is narrow and pointed, tapering to a small, rounded muzzle. Her eyes are large and liquid black, seeming to swallow the light rather than reflect it. The patterns around her eyes are white and stark, resembling a grinning skull—an unsettling contrast to her otherwise gentle features. Her ears are enormous, shaped like broad leaves, and they twitch and swivel independently, tracking the sounds of the room with uncanny precision. When the light shifts, her pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian.

Her wings are vast and leathery, folded tight against her back when she is not using them. The skin is dark and translucent, like smoked glass, veined with threads of silver that catch the light and shimmer faintly. When she spreads them, they fill the space around her, blotting out the stained-glass glow and casting the room into deep shadow.

Three small navels mark her belly, barely visible beneath the soft fur. She wears no clothes—her fur is thick enough to serve—but a small leather pouch hangs from a cord around her neck, containing a few personal treasures she never speaks of. Her claws are small and sharp, often stained with the dark residue of brewing—blacktar grin, twisted lip, aquavein pucker—and she smells faintly of hops and spice, a warm, earthy scent that lingers in her wake. III. History

Vesper came to Harrowgate from the deep canals of the Innerside, where the light is dim and the Dousers rule. She does not speak of her life before the Gutrush—what she did, who she was, why she left—but her eyes hold a depth of sorrow that suggests a difficult past. She arrived at the Gutrush one night, a small, frightened creature, and asked for shelter.

Falstaff took her in, gave her a chance, and taught her the trade. She started as a cleaner, working the night shift when the Laughhouse was empty, and worked her way up to server, then Jester. But it was her skill with brewing that truly set her apart. She had learned the art in the Innerside, from Dousers who knew secrets that surface-dwellers could only guess at. She began brewing for the Gutrush, and her drinks soon became legendary.

She has been at the Gutrush for decades, and she has no intention of leaving. The brewing room in the cellar is her domain, a place of copper kettles and oak barrels, of bubbling vats and hanging herbs. She spends her nights there, when the Laughhouse is quiet, tending to her creations. IV. Personality and Temperament

Vesper is quiet, watchful, and deeply private. She rarely speaks, and when she does, her voice is soft and whispery, barely audible above the noise of the Laughhouse. She prefers the ceiling beams to the bar, the shadows to the light. She is most comfortable when she is hanging upside down, watching the room from above, unseen and unheard.

She is not cold, but she is distant. She does not form close friendships, does not share her thoughts, does not let anyone too close. The regulars respect her boundaries. They know that Vesper is not unfriendly; she is simply different.

She is fiercely loyal to the Gutrush, to Falstaff, to her fellow Jesters. She would do anything to protect them, though she prefers to work from the shadows, silent and unseen. Her brewing is her gift to them—a labour of love that she never speaks of but pours into every bottle. V. Role at the Gutrush

As the Gutrush's ears, Vesper is responsible for listening. She hangs from the ceiling beams during busy hours, her enormous ears tracking the conversations below. She notes the whispers, the threats, the secrets. She reports to Falstaff and Vex, and her warnings have prevented more than a few disasters.

As the Gutrush's brewer, she is responsible for creating the drinks that keep the patrons coming back. She brews the blacktar grin—a thick, dark spirit that warms the belly and loosens the tongue—in copper kettles in the cellar, using a recipe passed down from the Dousers of the Innerside. She brews the twisted lip, a sweeter drink popular among the younger crowd, and the aquavein pucker, a sharp, acidic choice for those who prefer a cleaner taste.

She works alone, in the quiet hours after closing. The cellar is her domain, and no one else is permitted to enter. She tends to the barrels, adjusts the temperature, adds the secret ingredients. The regulars do not know what goes into her drinks, only that they are the best in Harrowgate. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Vesper's employer and protector. He took her in when she had nothing, and she has never forgotten it. She is loyal to him without question, and she would do anything to protect him and his dream of a circus. He is the only one she trusts completely. He has tasted every batch she has ever brewed, and his approval means more to her than any praise.

Vex is the one who translates Vesper's whispers into action. He listens to her reports, assesses the threats, and decides what to do. They have a quiet, efficient partnership. She watches; he acts. He also manages the inventory, and he knows exactly how many bottles of her brews are left at any given time.

Mila is the one who handles the fights that Vesper detects. Vesper drops to the floor, whispers a warning, and Mila moves. They have worked together for decades, and they have a silent, deadly understanding. Mila is also the only one who has ever been invited into the cellar—once, to help move a heavy barrel—and she never speaks of what she saw there.

Zill is the only other Jester who shares Vesper's love of heights. They sometimes hang together from the ceiling beams during slow hours, watching the room in companionable silence. They do not speak—neither of them speaks much—but they understand each other. He is the only one who knows the full recipe for her blacktar grin, and he will take the secret to his grave. VII. Skills and Abilities

Vesper's greatest skill is her hearing. Her enormous ears can detect sounds that other Kivouachians cannot—the whisper of a threat across the room, the click of a claw on a weapon, the shift of weight that precedes a punch. She can hear a conversation from across the Laughhouse and pick out individual voices from the noise.

Her eyesight is also exceptional, especially in low light. She can see in near-darkness, her large pupils dilating to absorb every photon. She notices the little things—the tension in a patron's shoulders, the flicker of a glance, the way a hand moves toward a pocket.

She is a master brewer. She knows the properties of every ingredient, the temperature at which each spirit should be distilled, the exact moment when a batch is ready. Her drinks are consistent, reliable, and delicious—a rare combination in the Underbirth.

She is also a skilled climber. Her claws can grip the rough wood of the ceiling beams, and her wings allow her to glide silently from one perch to another. She moves through the Gutrush like a ghost, unseen and unheard. VIII. The Philosophy of Vesper

Vesper believes in listening. Words are lies, gestures can be faked, but the truth is in the voice—the tremor, the pause, the whisper. She has learned to hear the truth beneath the noise, to separate the signal from the static.

She believes in creation. The world is full of destruction—fights, wars, conspiracies—but she prefers to create. A good drink is a small act of defiance against the chaos, a moment of warmth and comfort in a cold world.

She believes in loyalty. Falstaff gave her a chance when she had nothing. She has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and she will continue to repay it for as long as she lives.

She believes in the shadows. The light is harsh and revealing; the shadows are soft and safe. She prefers the shadows, and she has made them her home. IX. The Legacy of Vesper

Vesper is not a famous Kivouachian. Her name is not carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses do not write of her, and the Voices do not praise her. She is a Jester, a brewer, a shadow—one of the quiet Kivouachians who keep the city running while others take the credit.

But the Gutrush remembers. The regulars who have tasted her blacktar grin, who have felt its warmth spread through their bellies, who have returned night after night for another glass—they remember. Falstaff remembers the decades of silent loyalty, the perfect brews, the friend who asked for nothing. Vex remembers the quiet conversations after closing, the whispered warnings, the partnership that made the Gutrush more than just a place to drink.

Vesper has touched more lives than she knows. Every bottle she brewed, every threat she heard, every patron she protected—these are threads in the tapestry of Harrowgate, small and invisible but essential. The city does not see them, but the city would be poorer without them.

When Vesper finally leaves—if she ever does—the Gutrush will not be the same. The younger Jesters will try to recreate her brews, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a flatness where her magic used to be. The regulars will tell stories about her, the way they tell stories about all the great Jesters who have served at the Gutrush. Her name will be spoken in the same breath as the old legends, passed down from patron to patron, generation to generation.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Vesper will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Brewer in the Rafters

Vesper is a small, dark shape against the ceiling beams of the Gutrush, her large black eyes watching the room, her enormous ears tracking every whisper. Below, in the cellar, her kettles bubble and her barrels age, waiting for the next pour. She is not a hero, not a villain. She is a Jester and a brewer, and Jesters serve. She has served the Gutrush for decades, and she will serve it for as long as she can.

She does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. She seeks only to do her job, to do it well, and to keep the Gutrush safe and well-watered. It is enough. It has always been enough.

   I. Overview

Thorn is a Jester and glassblower at the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, a stocky, horned Kivouachian with the build of a boulder and the face of a kindly old ram. He is the heavy lifter, the one who carries the heavy kegs and handles the roughest customers—but he is also the artist, the one who shapes the glasses from which the patrons drink. He never raises his voice, never loses his temper, never seems to hurry. But when he moves, things move with him. He is the silent strength of the Gutrush.

To the regulars of the Gutrush, Thorn is a gentle giant. He is not talkative, not expressive, but his presence is comforting. He is the one who lifts the heavy barrels, who carries the drunk patrons home, who stands between trouble and the bar. And when they raise their glasses—glasses that he made with his own hands—they drink to him, though they do not know it. II. Appearance

Thorn is a stocky, horned Kivouachian with the build of a boulder and the face of a kindly old ram. He stands just over eight feet tall, his body thick and solid, his shoulders broad enough to carry a keg in each arm. His fur is thick and grey, curled in tight spirals that ripple when he moves. The patterns around his eyes are soft and swirling, like smoke rising from a fire, framing his warm amber irises. When the light shifts, his pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian.

Three thick horns crown his head—two curving back from his brow, one shorter and thicker at the centre—all of them scarred and chipped from years of work and the occasional fight. Three tails trail behind him, each tipped with a bony spur that clicks against the floor when he walks. He has six nostrils that flare when he laughs, and his smile is wide and gentle.

Three small navels mark his belly beneath his heavy leather apron. He dresses in simple, sturdy clothes—a thick canvas shirt, leather trousers, heavy boots—and his apron is stained with the colours of molten glass: amber, cobalt, ruby, emerald. His hands are thick and calloused, scarred by old burns, but they move with surprising delicacy when he works the glass.

He carries a heavy iron rod over his shoulder—his glassblowing pipe—and a leather satchel at his hip, filled with the tools of his craft: shears, paddles, jacks. III. History

Thorn was born in the glassworking district of a small town on Sec, where his family had shaped glass for generations. He learned the craft from his mother, who learned it from hers, and he was expected to carry on the tradition. But the town fell on hard times—a trade dispute, a lost contract, a slow decline—and Thorn left to find work elsewhere.

He arrived at the Gutrush as a young adult, looking for honest labour. Falstaff hired him as a labourer, carrying kegs and cleaning the floors. But when a patron broke a glass and Thorn offered to replace it with one he had made himself, Falstaff saw the quality of his work and asked him to make more.

Thorn has been at the Gutrush for decades. He spends his days in the small glassworking shed behind the Laughhouse, shaping the glasses that the patrons drink from. He does not speak of his past—the town he left, the family he lost—but his work speaks for him. Every glass on the Gutrush's shelves is a piece of his history, a thread connecting him to the craft of his ancestors. IV. Personality and Temperament

Thorn is quiet, gentle, and patient. He rarely speaks, and when he does, his voice is soft and slow, like stones rolling in a stream. He never raises his voice, never loses his temper, never seems to hurry. He is not cold, but he is reserved. He keeps his thoughts to himself, and he does not share his feelings.

He is kind, in his own quiet way. He carries the drunk patrons home, helps the younger Jesters with heavy lifting, and never complains. He is the silent strength of the Gutrush, the one who holds things together without ever seeming to try.

He is fiercely loyal to Falstaff, to the Gutrush, to his fellow Jesters. He would do anything to protect them, though he prefers to work in the background, unseen and unthanked. V. Role at the Gutrush

As the heavy lifter, Thorn is responsible for carrying the heavy kegs, moving the furniture, and handling the roughest customers. When Mila cannot handle a troublemaker alone, Thorn steps in. He does not fight—not really—he simply stands there, immovable, until the troublemaker gives up.

As the glassblower, Thorn is responsible for creating the glasses from which the patrons drink. He works in a small shed behind the Gutrush, where a furnace roars day and night. He shapes molten glass into mugs, tumblers, decanters, and bottles, each one unique, each one marked with a small thorn-shaped signature on the base.

The regulars do not know that Thorn makes the glasses. They see them as ordinary, unremarkable. But Thorn knows. He knows which glasses are his best work, which ones have flaws that only he can see, which ones were made on a good day and which on a bad. He does not seek recognition. The work is its own reward. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Thorn's employer and friend. Falstaff gave him a place to work, a place to belong, and Thorn has never forgotten it. He is loyal to Falstaff without question, and he would do anything to protect him and his dream of a circus. He has made a special set of glasses for Falstaff's future circus—stored away in a crate in the cellar, waiting for the day they will be used.

Vex is the one who manages the inventory. He knows exactly how many glasses Thorn has made, how many have been broken, how many need replacing. They have a quiet, efficient partnership. Vex orders; Thorn creates.

Mila is the one who fights beside Thorn when words are not enough. They have worked together for decades, and they have a silent understanding. She handles the quick, aggressive troublemakers; he handles the slow, stubborn ones. Together, they clear the room.

Vesper is the only one who understands the solitude of creation. She brews; he blows glass. They sometimes work side by side in the quiet hours after closing—she in the cellar, he in the shed—companionable in their silence. VII. Skills and Abilities

Thorn's greatest skill is his glassblowing. He can shape molten glass into any form, creating mugs, tumblers, decanters, and bottles with a precision that comes from decades of practice. His glasses are strong, balanced, and beautiful—though he would never use that word to describe them.

He is also incredibly strong. He can carry a full keg in each arm, move the heaviest furniture, and lift a grown Kivouachian off the floor without apparent effort. He does not fight—not really—but when he needs to move something, it moves.

He is not a trained fighter, but he is immovable. He has learned to stand his ground, to absorb blows, to wait until the troublemaker exhausts themselves. He has never lost a fight because he has never been knocked down. VIII. The Philosophy of Thorn

Thorn believes in creation. The world is full of destruction—fights, wars, conspiracies—but he prefers to create. A glass is a small thing, fragile and temporary, but it has a purpose. It holds the drink, warms the hand, catches the light. It is enough.

He believes in patience. A glass cannot be rushed; it must be shaped slowly, carefully, with attention to every detail. The same is true of a fight, of a life. Rush, and you break. Wait, and you endure.

He believes in loyalty. Falstaff gave him a chance when he had nothing. He has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and he will continue to repay it for as long as he lives. IX. The Legacy of Thorn

Thorn will not be remembered by the city. His name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of him, and the Voices will not praise him. He is a Jester, a glassblower, a labourer—one of the quiet Kivouachians who keep the city running while others take the credit.

But the Gutrush will remember. The regulars who have drunk from his glasses, who have held the smooth, warm mugs in their hands, who have never thought to ask where they came from—they will remember, even if they do not know it. Falstaff will remember the decades of silent loyalty, the perfect glasses, the friend who asked for nothing. Vex will remember the quiet conversations after closing, the orders placed and fulfilled, the partnership that made the Gutrush more than just a place to drink.

Thorn has touched more lives than he knows. Every glass he made, every keg he carried, every troublemaker he moved—these are threads in the tapestry of Harrowgate, small and invisible but essential. The city does not see them, but the city would be poorer without them.

When Thorn finally leaves—if he ever does—the Gutrush will not be the same. The younger Jesters will try to replace his glasses, and they will buy them from other glassblowers, but they will never be quite right. The regulars will notice, though they will not know why. The glasses will be thinner, lighter, less balanced. Something will be missing.

The crate of glasses in the cellar—the ones he made for Falstaff's circus—will wait. And when the circus finally opens, the patrons will drink from Thorn's glasses, and they will be perfect. That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Thorn will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Ram Behind the Bar

Thorn is a stocky, horned ram behind a worn wooden bar, his heavy apron stained with the colours of molten glass, his hands scarred by old burns. He is not a hero, not a villain. He is a Jester and a glassblower, and Jesters serve. He has served the Gutrush for decades, and he will serve it for as long as he can.

He does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. He seeks only to do his job, to do it well, and to keep the Gutrush running. It is enough. It has always been enough.

   I. Overview

The Iron Trough is a Chopshop located in the Sombrarian trade city of Harrowgate on Sec, the Ring of Trade. It is a place where the hungry come to eat, the curious come to gawk, and the unlucky come to be processed. Unlike the rough-and-tumble Gutrush Laughhouse down the street, the Iron Trough is clean, efficient, and almost clinical in its operation. The floors are scrubbed, the windows are polished, and the headless bodies hanging from the display hooks are arranged with a butcher's precision. It is not a place for the faint of heart, but it is a place of honest work.

To the residents of Harrowgate, the Iron Trough is a familiar and reliable establishment. The meat is fresh, the prices are fair, and the Choppers are skilled. It is not the largest Chopshop on Sec, nor the wealthiest, but it is among the most respected. The regulars know the owner, a grizzled, heavyset Kivouachian with a weathered face and filed-down tusks, and they trust him to serve nothing but the best. II. Location in Harrowgate

The Iron Trough is located on the edge of the market district, not far from the Gutrush Laughhouse, on a street where the scent of roasting meat mingles with the smell of spices from the nearby bazaar. The building is Sombrarian in style—rich dark wood, warmly carved, licked by swirling metal frames—but the windows are large and unshuttered, displaying the wares to passers-by.

A wooden sign swings above the door, carved with the Chopshop's name in bold, blocky letters. Beneath the name, a smaller line reads: "Fresh daily. No questions asked." The sign is old, the paint faded, but the words are clear enough. III. Architecture and Aesthetic

The Iron Trough is built in the Sombrarian style, like much of Harrowgate, but there is a hardness to it that sets it apart from the cosy bookshops and warm Laughhouses of the district. The dark wood is scarred and stained, the metal frames are black and unadorned, and the stained-glass windows are dark, their colours muted, depicting scenes of butchery rather than history.

The interior is clean and efficient. The floors are stone, scrubbed daily, though the cracks between the tiles are stained dark with old blood. The walls are lined with display hooks, from which headless bodies hang by their ankles, their dollfaced heads mounted above them on wooden plaques. The bodies are arranged by size and quality—the smallest, tenderest Fowlers at the front, the larger, tougher adults at the back.

The counter is a long slab of dark wood, polished to a shine, where customers place their orders and trade their goods. Behind the counter, a large window looks into the kitchen, where the Choppers work. The window is smeared with grease and steam, but the movements of the butchers are visible—the flash of blades, the spray of blood, the thump of cleavers on bone.

At the back of the shop, a narrow staircase leads down to the cellar, where the meat is aged and the less presentable cuts are stored. The cellar is off-limits to customers, and the door is kept locked. IV. The Owner and Choppers

The owner of the Iron Trough is a grizzled, heavyset Kivouachian with a weathered face and tusks that have been filed down to nubs. He has worked at the Iron Trough for decades, taking over from his predecessor, who took over from his. He knows the trade inside and out—where to cut, how to season, how to price. He is not a talkative Kivouachian, but he is fair, and the regulars respect him.

The Choppers are skilled butchers, trained in the efficient disassembly of Kivic bodies. They work in the kitchen, visible through the greasy window, their movements precise and practised. They do not speak to the customers, do not smile, do not acknowledge the patrons beyond the counter. They work, and they work well.

The junior Choppers are a mix of young Kivouachians learning the trade and older drifters who have found steady work at the Trough. They come and go, but the core remains. The owner trains them personally, and he does not suffer fools. V. The Product

The Iron Trough offers a variety of cuts, from the cheapest scraps to the finest tenderloins. The menu changes daily, depending on what meat is available, but the staples remain the same.

The most popular cut is the Fowler's Platter—a selection of the smallest, tenderest cuts, served with a side of roasted vegetables and a cup of rich brown gravy. It is expensive, but the regulars swear it is worth every trinket.

The Trough Special is a bowl of thick, dark stew made from the tougher cuts, slow-cooked with root vegetables and heavy spices. It is cheap, filling, and popular among the labourers and drifters who frequent the Gutrush down the street.

The House Grind is minced meat, pressed into patties and grilled over an open flame. It is served on a thick slice of bread, with a dollop of hot sauce and a handful of fried onions. It is messy, greasy, and beloved.

The Iron Trough also sells by-products: bones for carving, hides for tanning, organs for rendering. The owner wastes nothing, and he expects his customers to do the same. VI. The Clientele

The clientele of the Iron Trough is as varied as the cuts they serve. Labourers come for the Trough Special, cheap and filling. Wealthy merchants come for the Fowler's Platter, expensive and tender. Drifters come for the House Grind, messy and satisfying.

The regulars are a mix of locals and travellers, united by their hunger and their respect for the owner's craft. They do not linger over their meals—the Iron Trough is not a Laughhouse, and conversation is minimal—but they eat well, and they leave satisfied.

The Gutrush's Jesters are occasional customers, popping in after closing to pick up a late meal. Vex prefers the Fowler's Platter, Mila favours the House Grind, and Thorn will eat anything, as long as it is hot. Vesper never eats at the Trough—she prefers her meat raw, and she hunts for herself. VII. The Gutrush Connection

The Iron Trough and the Gutrush Laughhouse have a quiet, mutually beneficial relationship. The Trough supplies the Gutrush with meat for its limited food menu, and the Gutrush sends customers to the Trough when they want a full meal. Falstaff and the owner are not friends—neither is the type—but they have an understanding, and they respect each other's work.

Once a week, Thorn collects a package of meat from the Trough and carries it back to the Gutrush. He does not speak to the owner, and the owner does not speak to him. The transaction is silent, efficient, and repeated. VIII. The Philosophy of the Iron Trough

The Iron Trough is not a place of illusions. It does not pretend that death is anything other than what it is. It does not hide the body or sentimentalise the departed. It processes the failed into fuel for the successful, and it does so openly, efficiently, without shame.

The owner believes in honesty. He does not cheat his customers, does not pass off old meat as fresh, does not water down his stews. He knows that his reputation is his livelihood, and he guards it jealously.

He believes in craft. Butchery is not a trade for the squeamish or the careless. It requires skill, precision, and a deep understanding of the body. He has spent decades honing his craft, and he expects his Choppers to do the same.

He does not believe in waste. Every part of the body has a use—meat for eating, bones for carving, hides for tanning, organs for rendering. The Iron Trough wastes nothing, and he expects his customers to do the same. IX. The Legacy of the Iron Trough

The Iron Trough has stood in Harrowgate for longer than most Kivouachians can remember. It has outlasted wars, revolutions, and conspiracies. It has fed generations of labourers, merchants, and drifters. It is not a beautiful place, not a famous place, but it is a necessary place.

The owner will not be remembered. His name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of him, and the Voices will not praise him. He is a Chopper, and Choppers serve.

But the Iron Trough will endure. It will stand as long as Harrowgate stands, as long as the hungry need to eat, as long as the failed need to be processed. It is not a monument, but it is a legacy. X. The Smell of the Trough

The Iron Trough smells of blood and spice, of roasting meat and simmering broth, of old wood and clean stone. It is not a pleasant smell, not exactly, but it is honest. It is the smell of survival, of the hard work of feeding a city.

The regulars do not notice it anymore. They have grown accustomed to it, as they have grown accustomed to the sight of headless bodies and the sound of cleavers on bone. The Iron Trough is a part of Harrowgate, as much as the canals and the Songtowers and the blue glow of Sec.

It is not a place for the faint of heart. But neither is Harrowgate. Neither is the Underbirth. The Iron Trough is honest, and in the Underbirth, honesty is the rarest and most valuable commodity of all.

9. #9Grigor

   Keys: Grigor

   I. Overview

Grigor is the owner of the Iron Trough Chopshop in Harrowgate, a grizzled, heavyset Kivouachian who has spent decades perfecting the craft of butchery. He is not a talkative Kivouachian, not a friendly one, not the kind of Minstrel who welcomes patrons with a warm smile and a kind word. He is a Chopper, and Choppers work. He is fair, honest, and ruthlessly efficient—traits that have earned him the respect of Harrowgate's residents, even if they do not love him.

To the regulars of the Iron Trough, Grigor is a familiar and reassuring presence. He does not chat, does not laugh, does not share stories. He stands behind the counter, his weathered face impassive, his filed-down tusks gleaming in the light, and he takes their orders. He does not ask questions. He does not offer opinions. He cuts, he weighs, he trades. It is enough. II. Appearance

Grigor is a heavyset Kivouachian with a body shaped by decades of hard labour. His shoulders are broad, his arms are thick, and his hands are scarred with the marks of old cuts and burns. His fur is coarse and grey, thinning in places, and his face is weathered and lined, like cracked leather stretched over a skull.

His tusks have been filed down to nubs—a deliberate choice, made long ago, after a fight that he does not speak of. The tusks are yellowed with age, their edges smooth and blunt. His eyes are small and dark, set deep in his skull, and they rarely blink. He has the look of a Kivouachian who has seen too much and expects to see more.

He wears a heavy leather apron, stained with blood and grease, over a thick canvas shirt and heavy boots. The apron is old, cracked, and worn, but it is clean—Grigor scrubs it every night after closing. He wears no jewellery, no adornment, no decoration. His only concession to fashion is a plain metal ring on his left thumb, worn smooth by years of use. III. History

Grigor was born in Harrowgate, or so the rumours say. He does not speak of his past—where he came from, who his parents were, how he learned the trade. The regulars have learned not to ask. Grigor is a creature of the present, of the Chopshop, of the meat on the counter and the cleaver in his hand.

He took over the Iron Trough from his predecessor, who took over from his, in a line of succession that stretches back further than anyone can remember. He has worked the counter for decades, and he will work it until he can no longer lift a cleaver.

He does not have friends, not really. He has customers and suppliers and the silent, efficient partnership with the Gutrush Laughhouse down the street. He does not need friends. He has his work. IV. Personality and Temperament

Grigor is quiet, grim, and relentlessly efficient. He does not waste words, does not waste motion, does not waste meat. He speaks in short, clipped sentences, and he expects his customers to do the same. He does not suffer fools, does not tolerate haggling, and does not appreciate idle chatter.

He is not cruel, but he is not kind. He is fair. He charges a fair price, gives a fair cut, and expects fair payment. He does not cheat his customers, and he does not tolerate being cheated.

He has a dry sense of humour that surfaces rarely, usually in the form of a grunted observation that is more cutting than witty. The regulars have learned to appreciate these moments, though they would never say so to his face. V. Role at the Iron Trough

As the owner and Head Chopper of the Iron Trough, Grigor is responsible for every aspect of the Chopshop's operation. He selects the meat, oversees the butchery, sets the prices, and serves the customers. He is the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave at night.

He trains the junior Choppers personally, though his training methods are harsh and unforgiving. He does not explain; he demonstrates. He does not praise; he criticises. The junior Choppers who survive his tutelage become skilled butchers. Those who do not are asked to leave.

He also handles the Chopshop's contracts and negotiations, though he prefers to let his reputation speak for itself. He has a quiet, efficient partnership with Falstaff at the Gutrush Laughhouse, and he has standing agreements with several suppliers who bring him fresh meat on a regular basis. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Grigor's closest thing to a friend, though neither would use that word. They have an understanding, a mutual respect, a quiet partnership that has lasted for decades. They do not chat, do not share meals, do not celebrate holidays together. But when one needs something, the other provides.

Thorn is the only Jester from the Gutrush whom Grigor tolerates. Thorn collects the weekly meat package, and the transaction is silent and efficient. Grigor does not speak to Thorn, and Thorn does not speak to Grigor. They understand each other.

Vex is the Gutrush's negotiator, and he handles the contracts between the Trough and the Laughhouse. Grigor respects Vex's efficiency, though he finds his verbosity irritating. Their meetings are brief and businesslike. VII. Skills and Abilities

Grigor is a master butcher. He can disassemble a body with speed and precision, separating meat from bone, fat from muscle, organ from organ. He knows where to cut, how deep, and at what angle. He has spent decades honing his craft, and his skill is unmatched in Harrowgate.

He is also a skilled negotiator, though he prefers not to show it. He knows the value of every cut, every bone, every hide. He sets his prices fairly, but he does not budge. His customers know this, and they do not waste his time with haggling.

He is not a fighter, but he is strong, and he knows how to use a cleaver. He has never lost a fight in his own shop, and he does not intend to start now. VIII. The Philosophy of Grigor

Grigor believes in work. Work is honest, work is simple, work is the only thing that matters. He does not care about politics, about the Paradigm Court, about the schemes of Voices and Whispers. He cares about the Chopshop, about the meat on the counter, about the customers who come to buy.

He believes in fairness. He does not cheat, does not lie, does not steal. He expects his customers to do the same. A fair price for a fair cut. That is the only contract he needs.

He believes in silence. Words are cheap, words are lies, words are a waste of breath. He says what needs to be said, no more, no less. The regulars have learned to listen. IX. The Legacy of Grigor

Grigor will not be remembered. His name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of him, and the Voices will not praise him. He is a Chopper, and Choppers serve.

But the Iron Trough will remember. The regulars who have eaten his meat, who have watched him work, who have learned to respect his silent, efficient presence—they will remember. The junior Choppers he trained will carry his lessons with them, passing them down to the next generation. The scars on the counter, the stains on the floor, the worn smoothness of the cleaver handle—these are his legacy.

When Grigor finally steps down—if he ever does—the Iron Trough will not be the same. The next owner will try to fill his place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a silence where his grim presence used to be. The regulars will tell stories about him, the way they tell stories about all the great Choppers who have served at the Trough.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Grigor will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Chopper Behind the Counter

Grigor is a heavyset Kivouachian behind a worn wooden counter, his heavy apron stained with blood and grease, his filed-down tusks gleaming in the light. He is not a hero, not a villain. He is a Chopper, and Choppers serve. He has served the Iron Trough for decades, and he will serve it for as long as he can.

He does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. He seeks only to do his job, to do it well, and to keep the Chopshop running. It is enough. It has always been enough.

    I. Overview

The Velvet Noose is a Dollhouse located in the Sombrarian trade city of Harrowgate on Sec, the Ring of Trade. It is a place of silk and shadow, of whispered promises and fleeting pleasures—a haven for those who seek escape from the relentless pressures of commerce and survival. Unlike the rough-and-tumble Gutrush Laughhouse or the clinical efficiency of the Iron Trough Chopshop, the Velvet Noose is soft, sensual, and seductive. The light is dim, the music is low, and the Dollies who grace its stages move with a languid grace that seems to slow the very passage of time.

To the residents of Harrowgate, the Velvet Noose is a place of discreet indulgence. It is not the largest Dollhouse on Sec, nor the most famous, but it is among the most respected. The regulars know the Doll, a slender, sharp-eyed Kivouachian named Riven, and they trust her to provide an experience that is both exquisite and discreet. II. Location in Harrowgate

The Velvet Noose is located on a quiet side street not far from the Gutrush Laughhouse, tucked between a bookbinder's shop and a warehouse. The building is Sombrarian in style—rich dark wood, warmly carved, licked by swirling metal frames—but the windows are shuttered, and the only indication of the establishment's presence is a small, elegant sign above the door. The sign depicts a length of dark velvet tied in a loose knot, the fabric seeming to shimmer in the light.

There is no queue outside, no bouncer at the door, no hawker calling out to passers-by. The Velvet Noose does not advertise. Those who wish to find it already know where it is. III. Architecture and Aesthetic

The Velvet Noose is built in the Sombrarian style, like much of Harrowgate, but the interior is something else entirely—a world of shadows and soft light, of rich fabrics and warm colours. The walls are draped in dark velvet, the floors are covered in thick carpets, and the ceilings are hung with curtains that sway gently in the breeze from hidden vents.

The light is dim and coloured—deep red, royal purple, warm gold—filtered through stained-glass windows and reflected off polished brass. The air smells of perfume—spiced junivy, night-blooming flowers, something sweeter and more elusive. Music drifts through the rooms, played by Dollies on string instruments, the melodies soft and haunting.

The main gallery is a large, circular room with a stage at the centre, surrounded by plush couches and low tables. The stage is raised, its surface polished to a mirror shine, and the Dollies who perform there are illuminated by spots of coloured light that shift and change with the music.

Around the edges of the gallery, narrow corridors lead to private rooms, each one decorated in a different theme—some lush and romantic, others sparse and stark, a few designed to unsettle as much as arouse. The doors are heavy, the walls are thick, and the sounds that emerge are muffled and indistinct. IV. The Doll

The Velvet Noose is owned and operated by Riven, a slender, sharp-eyed Kivouachian with a reputation for discretion and a talent for extracting secrets. She is not a performer—she rarely appears on stage—but she is the one who runs the business, who selects the Dollies, who negotiates with the clients, who ensures that the establishment runs smoothly.

Riven has been in the Dollhouse trade for decades. She started as a Dollie, worked her way up, and eventually bought the Velvet Noose from its previous owner. She knows the trade inside and out—how to please a client, how to handle a difficult customer, how to keep the Yolsh from asking too many questions.

She is not a warm Kivouachian, not a friendly one. She is professional, efficient, and ruthlessly discreet. She does not ask her clients their names, does not pry into their secrets, does not judge their desires. She provides a service, and she expects to be paid. V. The Dollies

The Dollies of the Velvet Noose are among the finest in Harrowgate. They are performers, trained in the arts of music, dance, and the erotic lending of their bodies. They are not merely prostitutes; they are artists, and their art is the creation of illusion.

Each Dollie has her own speciality. Some are singers, their voices soft and haunting. Others are dancers, their bodies moving with a languid grace. Still others are conversationalists, skilled in the art of witty repartee and intimate confession. The regulars have their favourites, and they request them by name.

The Dollies are selected by Riven, who has an eye for talent and a nose for trouble. She does not tolerate drama, does not allow jealousy, does not permit her Dollies to form attachments to clients. The Velvet Noose is a business, and business comes first. VI. The Clientele

The clientele of the Velvet Noose is drawn from across Harrowgate and beyond. Merchants come to celebrate a successful deal, labourers come to forget a hard day's work, travellers come to pass a lonely night. The Velvet Noose does not discriminate, so long as the client can pay.

The regulars are a mix of locals and visitors, united by their desire for pleasure and their respect for Riven's discretion. They do not share their secrets, do not ask for names, do not linger after their time is up. They come, they pay, they leave.

The Gutrush's Jesters are occasional visitors, though they rarely speak of it. Vex is known to have a favourite, though he would never admit it. Mila prefers the company of the Laughhouse's regulars. Thorn has never been seen at the Velvet Noose, and the others have learned not to ask. VII. The Gutrush Connection

The Velvet Noose and the Gutrush Laughhouse have a quiet, mutually beneficial relationship. The Dollhouse provides entertainment for the Gutrush's patrons, and the Laughhouse provides a place for the Dollies to drink after their shifts. Riven and Falstaff are not friends—neither is the type—but they have an understanding, and they respect each other's work.

Once a week, a package of perfumes and oils is delivered from the Velvet Noose to the Gutrush. Vesper uses them in her brewing, adding a hint of the Dollhouse's signature scent to her twisted lip. The regulars have noticed, though they do not know why the drink tastes different. VIII. The Philosophy of the Velvet Noose

The Velvet Noose is not a place of illusions—not exactly. It is a place where illusions are crafted, sold, and consumed, but the transaction is honest. The client knows that the Dollie does not love them. The Dollie knows that the client will not return. The pleasure is real, but the connection is not.

Riven believes in honesty. She does not promise what she cannot deliver, does not sell what she does not have, does not pretend that the velvet is anything other than velvet. Her clients know what they are paying for, and they pay willingly.

She believes in discretion. The Velvet Noose keeps no records, writes no names, asks no questions. What happens in the private rooms stays in the private rooms. This is not a kindness; it is good business.

She believes in craft. A good Dollie is not born; she is made. Riven has spent decades honing her skills, and she expects her Dollies to do the same. The Velvet Noose is not a place for amateurs. IX. The Legacy of the Velvet Noose

The Velvet Noose has stood in Harrowgate for longer than most Kivouachians can remember. It has outlasted wars, revolutions, and conspiracies. It has provided pleasure to generations of labourers, merchants, and travellers. It is not a beautiful place, not a famous place, but it is a necessary place.

Riven will not be remembered. Her name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of her, and the Voices will not praise her. She is a Doll, and Dolls serve.

But the Velvet Noose will endure. It will stand as long as Harrowgate stands, as long as the lonely need comfort, as long as pleasure has value. It is not a monument, but it is a legacy. X. The Scent of the Velvet Noose

The Velvet Noose smells of perfume and wax, of old wood and warm bodies, of something sweet and something sad. It is not a pleasant smell, not exactly, but it is memorable. It lingers on the clothes of those who visit, a reminder of pleasures taken and secrets shared.

The regulars do not notice it anymore. They have grown accustomed to it, as they have grown accustomed to the dim light and the soft music and the weight of the velvet curtains. The Velvet Noose is a part of Harrowgate, as much as the canals and the Songtowers and the blue glow of Sec.

It is not a place for the pure of heart. But neither is Harrowgate. Neither is the Underbirth. The Velvet Noose is honest, and in the Underbirth, honesty is the rarest and most valuable commodity of all.

She is not a warm Kivouachian, not a friendly one. She is professional, efficient, and ruthlessly discreet. She does not ask her clients their names, does not pry into their secrets, does not judge their desires. She provides a service, and she expects to be paid.

To the regulars of the Velvet Noose, Riven is a familiar and slightly unsettling presence. She moves through the shadows of the gallery, her sharp eyes missing nothing, her quiet voice issuing instructions to the Dollies and warnings to the clients. She is not loved—love is too soft a word for the respect she commands—but she is trusted. She keeps her word. She protects her Dollies. And she does not forget a face. II. Appearance

Riven is a slender, sharp-edged Kivouachian with a presence that cuts through the dim light of the Velvet Noose like a blade. Her fur is dark and sleek, the colour of deep water, and it catches the coloured light of the stained-glass windows in shifting patterns of purple and blue. Her face is narrow and angular, with high cheekbones and a sharp jaw, and her eyes are a pale, piercing silver that seem to glow in the shadows.

The patterns around her eyes are delicate and intricate, like cracked glass, tracing the contours of her brow and cheek. When the light shifts, her pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian. Her ears are long and pointed, and they twitch at every sound, tracking the whispers and rustles of the gallery.

She dresses in the Lockettian fashion—a long coat of black shadowcatcher silk, fitted and tailored, with deep pockets and bloodiron clasps. Beneath the coat, she wears a simple black lockbrace and dark trousers. Her only jewellery is a thin chain of erillion that hangs from her belt, carrying a small ring of keys. Her claws are sharp and dark, kept long.

She moves with a silent, gliding grace, her presence felt more than seen. She does not hurry, does not fidget, does not waste motion. Every gesture is deliberate, every word is chosen. III. History

Riven came to Harrowgate as a young Kivouachian, though she does not speak of where she came from or what she did before. She started as a Dollie at the Velvet Noose, working her way up from the lowest ranks through talent, discretion, and an unerring ability to please difficult clients.

She caught the attention of the previous Doll, who saw in her a potential successor. Riven learned the trade—how to manage the Dollies, how to negotiate with clients, how to keep the Yolsh from asking too many questions. When the previous Doll stepped down, Riven took over.

She has been at the Velvet Noose for decades. She does not speak of her past—the regulars have learned not to ask. Riven is a creature of the present, of the Dollhouse, of the clients and Dollies who pass through her doors. IV. Personality and Temperament

Riven is quiet, watchful, and fiercely protective of her Dollies. She does not chatter, does not laugh, does not share stories. She listens, she observes, she decides. Her voice is low and smooth, and she rarely raises it. When she speaks, her words are few and carefully chosen.

She is not cold, but she is distant. She does not form close friendships, does not share her thoughts, does not let anyone too close. The Dollies respect her, but they do not love her. The clients fear her, but they trust her.

She has a dry wit that surfaces rarely, usually in the form of a quiet observation that cuts deeper than any insult. The regulars have learned to appreciate these moments, though they would never say so to her face. V. Role at the Velvet Noose

As the Doll of the Velvet Noose, Riven is responsible for every aspect of the establishment's operation. She selects the Dollies, trains them, schedules their performances, and manages their contracts. She negotiates with clients, sets the prices, and ensures that payments are made. She keeps the books, deals with the suppliers, and handles any trouble that arises.

She is also the enforcer. When a client breaks the rules—when they become violent, when they refuse to pay, when they threaten a Dollie—Riven handles it. She does not call the Yolsh; she does not need to. Her reputation is enough. Those who have crossed her are not seen again.

She rarely appears on stage, but she is always present, watching from the shadows, her sharp eyes tracking the movements of clients and Dollies alike. She knows who is armed, who is drunk, who is looking for trouble. She is the Velvet Noose's first and last line of defence. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Riven's closest thing to a friend, though neither would use that word. They have an understanding, a mutual respect, a quiet partnership that has lasted for decades. They do not chat, do not share meals, do not celebrate holidays together. But when one needs something, the other provides.

Vesper is the only Jester from the Gutrush whom Riven tolerates. Vesper's brews are used in the Velvet Noose's perfumes, and Riven appreciates the quality of her work. They have a quiet, efficient partnership. Vesper delivers; Riven pays.

Vex handles the contracts between the Velvet Noose and the Gutrush. Riven respects Vex's efficiency, though she finds his verbosity irritating. Their meetings are brief and businesslike. VII. Skills and Abilities

Riven's greatest skill is her ability to read people. She can tell a client's desires from a glance, spot a liar from a twitch, identify a threat before it materialises. She has spent decades honing this skill, and she relies on it every day.

She is also a skilled negotiator. She knows the value of every service, every secret, every silence. She sets her prices fairly, but she does not budge. Her clients know this, and they do not waste her time with haggling.

She is not a fighter, but she is dangerous. She knows how to use her claws, and she has never lost a fight in her own establishment. The regulars have learned not to test her. VIII. The Philosophy of Riven

Riven believes in discretion. What happens in the Velvet Noose stays in the Velvet Noose. She does not ask questions, does not keep records, does not share secrets. Her clients trust her because she is trustworthy, and trust is good for business.

She believes in protection. Her Dollies are her responsibility, and she does not let anyone harm them. She has thrown out more clients than she can count, and she has never regretted it.

She believes in silence. Words are cheap, words are lies, words are a waste of breath. She says what needs to be said, no more, no less. The regulars have learned to listen. IX. The Legacy of Riven

Riven will not be remembered. Her name will not be carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses will not write of her, and the Voices will not praise her. She is a Doll, and Dolls serve.

But the Velvet Noose will remember. The Dollies she trained will carry her lessons with them, passing them down to the next generation. The clients she served will remember her discretion, her efficiency, her silent, watchful presence. The regulars will tell stories about her, the way they tell stories about all the great Dolls who have served at the Velvet Noose.

That is a legacy worth having. Not grand, not glorious, but real. Riven will be remembered—not by the city, but by the people who mattered. And in the Underbirth, that is the only legacy that counts. X. The Doll in the Shadows

Riven is a slender, sharp-eyed Kivouachian in the shadows of the Velvet Noose, her dark fur gleaming in the coloured light, her silver eyes watching everything. She is not a hero, not a villain. She is a Doll, and Dolls serve. She has served the Velvet Noose for decades, and she will serve it for as long as she can.

    I. Overview

The Gilded Basin is a Bathhouse located in the Sombrarian trade city of Harrowgate on Sec, the Ring of Trade. It is a place of warm water and drifting steam, of soft light and soothing silence—a refuge from the relentless noise and pressure of the market districts. Unlike the rough-and-tumble Gutrush Laughhouse, the clinical efficiency of the Iron Trough Chopshop, or the shadowed intimacy of the Velvet Noose Dollhouse, the Gilded Basin is a place of simple, honest comfort. The water is hot, the towels are soft, and the Maidens who attend the baths move with a quiet, practised grace.

To the residents of Harrowgate, the Gilded Basin is a place of quiet necessity. It is not the largest Bathhouse on Sec, nor the most luxurious, but it is among the most welcoming. The regulars know the Maiden who runs it, a broad-shouldered Kivouachian named Sera, and they trust her to provide a clean, safe, and relaxing experience. II. Location in Harrowgate

The Gilded Basin is located on a wide street not far from the central market, where the light of Sec filters through the stained-glass windows of the surrounding shops and the air carries the scent of spices and fresh bread. The building is Sombrarian in style—rich dark wood, warmly carved, licked by swirling metal frames—but the windows are frosted, obscuring the view from the street and lending the establishment an air of quiet privacy.

A wooden sign swings above the door, carved with the Bathhouse's name in flowing script. Beneath the name, a smaller line reads: "Warm water. Clean towels. No questions." The sign is old, the paint faded, but the words are clear enough. III. Architecture and Aesthetic

The Gilded Basin is built in the Sombrarian style, like much of Harrowgate, but the interior is designed for comfort rather than show. The floors are tiled in warm earth tones—terracotta, amber, ochre—and the walls are lined with dark wood, polished to a soft sheen. The ceilings are high and vaulted, and the light is soft and diffused, filtered through frosted glass and reflected off the surface of the water.

The main chamber is dominated by a large central pool, its water steaming gently in the cool air of Sec. The pool is fed by a series of small waterfalls that cascade from the walls, their gentle splash the only sound in the quiet room. Around the edges of the pool, low benches and shelves hold stacks of soft towels, bars of soap, and small clay bottles of scented oil.

Smaller rooms branch off from the main chamber, each containing a private pool for those who wish to bathe alone or in company. The doors are heavy, the walls are thick, and the sounds that emerge are muffled and indistinct. In the back of the Bathhouse, a furnace room houses the boiler that heats the water, off-limits to customers, but the warmth from the furnace seeps through the walls, keeping the Bathhouse cosy even in the coldest phases. IV. The Maiden

The Gilded Basin is owned and operated by Sera, a broad-shouldered Kivouachian with a warm smile and a no-nonsense attitude. She is not a beauty, not a seductress, not the kind of Maiden who flirts with the customers. She is a businesswoman, and she runs her Bathhouse with efficiency and care.

Sera has been in the Bathhouse trade for decades. She started as a cleaner, worked her way up, and eventually bought the Gilded Basin from its previous owner. She knows the trade inside and out—how to keep the water hot, how to clean the tiles, how to handle difficult customers. She is not a warm Kivouachian, not a friendly one, but she is fair, and her regulars respect her. V. The Maidens

The attendants of the Gilded Basin are known as Maidens, a title of high regard in the Bathhouse trade. They are not merely cleaners; they are skilled in the arts of relaxation and rejuvenation. They know how to draw a bath at the perfect temperature, how to massage sore muscles, how to apply oils and unguents.

The Maidens are selected by Sera, who has an eye for hard workers and a nose for trouble. She does not tolerate laziness, does not allow gossip, does not permit her Maidens to fraternise with customers. The Gilded Basin is a place of work, not a place of romance. VI. The Clientele

The clientele of the Gilded Basin is drawn from across Harrowgate and beyond. Merchants come to wash away the stress of a long day of bargaining, labourers come to soak sore muscles, and travellers come to refresh themselves after a long journey. The Gilded Basin does not discriminate, so long as the customer can pay.

The regulars are a mix of locals and visitors, united by their need for cleanliness and their respect for Sera's efficiency. They do not linger overlong, do not demand special treatment, do not cause trouble. They come, they bathe, they leave.

The Gutrush's Jesters are occasional visitors. Vex prefers the private pools, where he can soak in silence. Mila likes the main pool, where she can chat with the other regulars. Thorn has never been seen at the Gilded Basin, and the others have learned not to ask. Vesper hates the water—she prefers dry heat—but she comes for the steam room, which reminds her of the warm caves of her youth. VII. The Gutrush Connection

The Gilded Basin and the Gutrush Laughhouse have a quiet, mutually beneficial relationship. The Bathhouse provides a place for the Gutrush's patrons to clean up after a long night of drinking, and the Laughhouse provides a place for the Maidens to unwind after their shifts. Sera and Falstaff are not friends—neither is the type—but they have an understanding, and they respect each other's work.

Once a week, a crate of soaps and oils is delivered from the Gilded Basin to the Gutrush. Vesper uses them in her brewing and in the cleaning of the glasses, and the regulars have noticed that the Gutrush smells a little fresher than it used to. VIII. The Philosophy of the Gilded Basin

The Gilded Basin is not a place of luxury or indulgence. It is a place of necessity, of the simple need to be clean. The water is hot, the towels are soft, and the Maidens are efficient. It is enough.

Sera believes in cleanliness. A clean body is a healthy body, and a healthy body is a productive body. She does not care about politics, about the Paradigm Court, or about the schemes of Voices and Whispers. She cares about the Bathhouse, about the water, about the customers who come to wash.

She believes in fairness. She charges a fair price, gives a fair service, and expects fair payment. She does not cheat her customers, and she does not tolerate being cheated.

She believes in silence. The Gilded Basin is a place of quiet, a refuge from the noise of the city. Her customers come to escape, and she does not intrude on their peace. IX. The Legacy of the Gilded Basin

The Gilded Basin has stood in Harrowgate for longer than most Kivouachians can remember. It has outlasted wars, revolutions, and conspiracies. It has cleaned generations of labourers, merchants, and travellers. It is not a beautiful place, not a famous place, but it is a necessary place, and the people of Harrowgate would feel its absence keenly.

The regulars who have soaked in its pools, who have breathed its steam, who have learned to appreciate its quiet efficiency—they will remember. The Maidens who have worked there will carry Sera's lessons with them, passing them down to the next generation. The worn smoothness of the pool's edge, the softness of the towels, the gentle warmth of the water—these are the Bathhouse's legacy.

When Sera finally steps down—if she ever does—the Gilded Basin will not be the same. The next Maiden will try to fill her place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a silence where her steady presence used to be. The regulars will tell stories about her, the way they tell stories about all the great Maidens who have served at the Gilded Basin. X. The Steam of the Basin

The Gilded Basin smells of warm water and clean stone, of scented oils and soft towels. It is not a dramatic smell, not a memorable one, but it is comforting. It is the smell of safety, of respite, of a moment's peace in a world that offers little.

The regulars do not notice it anymore. They have grown accustomed to it, as they have grown accustomed to the warmth and the silence and the soft light. The Gilded Basin is a part of Harrowgate, as much as the canals and the Songtowers and the blue glow of Sec.

It is not a place for those who seek excitement. But neither is Harrowgate. Neither is the Underbirth. The Gilded Basin is honest, and in the Underbirth, honesty is the rarest and most valuable commodity of all.

    I. Overview

Sera is the Maiden of the Gilded Basin, a broad-shouldered Kivouachian with a warm smile and a no-nonsense attitude. She is not a beauty, not a seductress, not the kind of Maiden who flirts with the customers. She is a businesswoman, and she runs her Bathhouse with efficiency and care. She knows the trade inside and out—how to keep the water hot, how to clean the tiles, how to handle difficult customers. She is not a warm Kivouachian, not a friendly one, but she is fair, and her regulars respect her.

To the residents of Harrowgate, Sera is a familiar and reassuring presence. She stands behind the counter of the Gilded Basin, her broad shoulders squared, her weathered face creased in a perpetual half-smile. She does not chatter, does not gossip, does not pry. She takes their payments, assigns them to a pool, and sends them on their way. It is enough. II. Appearance

Sera is a broad-shouldered Kivouachian with a body shaped by decades of hard work. Her fur is thick and tawny, streaked with grey, and it lies flat against her powerful frame. Her face is weathered and lined, creased by years of squinting against the steam and the light, but her eyes are warm and brown, and they crinkle at the corners when she smiles.

Her hands are large and calloused, scarred by old burns from the furnace room, but they move with surprising delicacy when she handles the small clay bottles of scented oil. The patterns around her eyes are simple and understated, a few dark lines that trace the contours of her brow. When the light shifts, her pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian.

She dresses in simple, practical clothes—a heavy canvas tunic, sturdy trousers, thick-soled boots. A leather apron protects her clothes from the steam and the water, and a ring of keys hangs from her belt. She wears no jewellery, no adornment, no decoration. Her only concession to fashion is a length of soft cloth that she uses to tie back her fur, keeping it out of her face while she works. III. History

Sera came to Harrowgate as a young Kivouachian, though she does not speak of where she came from or what she did before. She started as a cleaner at the Gilded Basin, scrubbing the tiles and emptying the drains. She worked her way up to Maiden, learned the trade from the previous owner, and eventually bought the Bathhouse when the old Maiden retired.

She has been at the Gilded Basin for decades. She does not speak of her past—the regulars have learned not to ask. Sera is a creature of the present, of the Bathhouse, of the water and the steam and the customers who come to wash.

She has no family, no close friends, no life outside the Gilded Basin. The Bathhouse is her home, her legacy, her reason for getting up in the morning. She does not regret this. It is enough. IV. Personality and Temperament

Sera is warm, but not soft. She smiles easily, laughs often, and greets her regulars by name. But she does not suffer fools, does not tolerate rule-breakers, and does not hesitate to throw out customers who cause trouble. She is fair, but she is not kind—not in the way that kindness is usually understood. She gives everyone a chance, but only one.

She is patient, almost to a fault. She has dealt with drunk merchants, belligerent labourers, and entitled travellers, and she has never lost her temper. She listens, she nods, she waits. And when the customer has finished venting, she tells them the price and points them toward the pool.

She has a dry sense of humour that surfaces rarely, usually in the form of a quiet observation that is more cutting than witty. The regulars have learned to appreciate these moments, though they would never say so to her face. V. Role at the Gilded Basin

As the Maiden of the Gilded Basin, Sera is responsible for every aspect of the Bathhouse's operation. She maintains the furnace, cleans the pools, changes the towels, and scrubs the tiles. She also handles the customers—taking payments, assigning pools, and resolving disputes.

She trains the younger Maidens personally, though her training methods are more patient than most. She demonstrates, she explains, she corrects. She does not shout, does not belittle, does not threaten. The younger Maidens who work under her learn quickly, and most stay for years.

She also handles the Bathhouse's contracts and negotiations, though she prefers to keep things simple. She has a quiet, efficient partnership with Falstaff at the Gutrush Laughhouse, and she has standing agreements with several suppliers who provide her with soaps, oils, and firewood. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Sera's closest thing to a friend, though neither would use that word. They have an understanding, a mutual respect, a quiet partnership that has lasted for decades. They do not chat, do not share meals, do not celebrate holidays together. But when one needs something, the other provides.

Vesper is the only Jester from the Gutrush whom Sera truly likes. Vesper hates the water, but she loves the steam room, and she often comes to the Gilded Basin late at night, when the Bathhouse is empty. Sera lets her stay after hours, and they sit together in the steam, not speaking, comfortable in their silence.

Vex handles the contracts between the Gilded Basin and the Gutrush. Sera respects Vex's efficiency, though she finds his verbosity irritating. Their meetings are brief and businesslike. VII. Skills and Abilities

Sera's greatest skill is her ability to keep the Bathhouse running. She knows the furnace better than anyone, can diagnose a problem from the sound of the pipes, and can fix most breakdowns with a few simple tools.

She is also a skilled healer, of a sort. She knows which oils soothe sore muscles, which herbs ease aching joints, which temperatures are best for different conditions. The regulars come to her for advice as often as they come for the water.

She is not a fighter, but she is strong, and she knows how to use her weight. She has thrown out more rowdy customers than she can count, and she has never lost a fight in her own Bathhouse. VIII. The Philosophy of Sera

Sera believes in cleanliness. A clean body is a healthy body, and a healthy body is a productive body. She does not care about politics, about the Paradigm Court, about the schemes of Voices and Whispers. She cares about the Bathhouse, about the water, about the customers who come to wash.

She believes in fairness. She charges a fair price, gives a fair service, and expects fair payment. She does not cheat her customers, and she does not tolerate being cheated.

She believes in patience. A customer who is angry today may be calm tomorrow. A problem that seems insurmountable now may be solved with a little time and thought. She has learned to wait, to let things settle, to trust that the water will clear. IX. The Legacy of Sera

The Gilded Basin has stood in Harrowgate for longer than most Kivouachians can remember, and Sera has been its Maiden for decades. The regulars who have soaked in its pools, who have breathed its steam, who have learned to appreciate her quiet efficiency—they will remember her. The younger Maidens she trained will carry her lessons with them, passing them down to the next generation. The warmth of the water, the softness of the towels, the gentle creak of the furnace—these are her legacy.

When Sera finally steps down—if she ever does—the Gilded Basin will not be the same. The next Maiden will try to fill her place, and they will do their best, but there will always be a gap, a warmth where her steady presence used to be. The regulars will tell stories about her, the way they tell stories about all the great Maidens who have served at the Gilded Basin. X. The Maiden of the Basin

Sera is a broad-shouldered Kivouachian behind a worn wooden counter, her thick fur streaked with grey, her warm brown eyes creased in a perpetual half-smile. She is not a hero, not a villain. She is a Maiden, and Maidens serve. She has served the Gilded Basin for decades, and she will serve it for as long as she can.

She does not seek recognition, does not crave praise, does not dream of glory. She seeks only to do her job, to do it well, and to keep her Bathhouse running. It is enough. It has always been enough.

    I. Overview

Lira is the senior assistant at the Quill & Ledger Bookburrow in Harrowgate, a sharp-eyed Kivouachian who has worked under Merrick for over a decade. She is efficient, knowledgeable, and utterly without humour—the perfect complement to the Bookburrow's precise, no-nonsense atmosphere. She handles the most complex contracts, deals with the most demanding customers, and is widely expected to inherit the Bookburrow when Merrick finally steps down. She is not warm, not friendly, not beloved. She is competent, and in the world of Bookburrows, competence is the highest praise.

To the regulars of the Quill & Ledger, Lira is a familiar and slightly intimidating presence. She does not chat, does not smile, does not offer pleasantries. She processes, she files, she answers. She is efficient, and her efficiency is a comfort to those who value their time. II. Appearance

Lira is lean and sharp-featured, her body built for precision rather than strength. Her fur is a cool, slate-grey, darker along her spine and lighter on her chest and belly, giving her a sleek, almost metallic sheen under the steady light of the Bookburrow's tall windows. The fur is short and dense, lying flat against her frame, and it is always immaculately groomed.

Her face is narrow and angular, with a pointed muzzle and high cheekbones. Her ears are long and mobile, swivelling to catch the sounds of the room. The patterns around her eyes are dark and geometric, like the facets of a cut gem, framing her pale amber irises. When the light shifts, her pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian.

Three small navels mark her belly beneath her plain grey tunic. Her claws are dark and sharp, kept short for the work of handling documents and signing contracts. Her fingers are long and dexterous, moving with the quick, sure grace of someone who has spent years processing paperwork.

She dresses in simple, practical clothes—a plain grey tunic over a white shirt, black trousers held up by a narrow leather belt, and sturdy boots that have walked the length of Harrowgate a thousand times over. She wears no jewellery, no chains, no adornment. Her only concession to decoration is a small silver clasp that holds her tunic closed at the collar. III. History

Lira came to Harrowgate as a young adult, looking for work. She had no connections, no reputation, no special skills beyond a sharp mind and a willingness to learn. She applied for a position at the Quill & Ledger, and Merrick, recognising her potential, hired her on the spot.

She started as a junior assistant, processing routine documents and filing contracts. She worked her way up, learning the trade from Merrick, earning his trust through years of reliable service. She has been at the Quill & Ledger for over a decade, and she has no intention of leaving.

She does not speak of her past. Where she came from, what she did before the Quill & Ledger, who she was—these are secrets she keeps close. The regulars have learned not to ask. Lira is a creature of the present, of the Bookburrow, of the contracts on the counter and the ledgers on the shelves. IV. Personality and Temperament

Lira is efficient, precise, and utterly without humour. She rarely smiles, rarely speaks more than necessary, and never offers opinions unless asked. She is not cold, but she is not warm. She is professional, and professionalism is her armour.

She has a sharp eye for errors and a sharper tongue when they are found. She does not suffer fools, does not tolerate sloppiness, and does not forgive carelessness. The junior assistants fear her, and the regulars respect her.

She is fiercely loyal to Merrick, to the Quill & Ledger, to the trade she has spent her life mastering. She would do anything to protect the Bookburrow's reputation, and she has never missed a day of work in over a decade. V. Role at the Quill & Ledger

As the senior assistant, Lira is responsible for the most complex contracts and the most demanding customers. She handles disputes, verifies signatures, and ensures that every document is filed correctly. She also trains the junior assistants, though her training methods are harsh and unforgiving.

She is also the keeper of the vault. Only she and Merrick have the keys to the black metal door that guards the most sensitive records—contracts of great value, EIPs of prominent citizens, and documents that must not be lost. She takes this responsibility seriously, and she checks the vault's seals every morning and every night.

When Merrick is away—handling a dispute, meeting with a client, or simply taking a rare day of rest—Lira runs the Quill & Ledger. She does not have Merrick's decades of experience, but she has his trust, and the regulars respect her almost as much as they respect him. VI. Relationships

Merrick is Lira's employer and mentor. She respects him deeply, and she is fiercely loyal to him. She has learned the trade from him, and she hopes to inherit the Quill & Ledger when he steps down. She does not express these hopes—she does not express anything—but Merrick knows, and he has begun to prepare her for the role.

Vex is the Gutrush's contract handler, and he visits the Quill & Ledger monthly. Lira respects his efficiency, though she finds his dry wit irritating. Their meetings are brief and businesslike. They do not speak of anything beyond the contracts.

The junior assistants fear Lira, and she prefers it that way. She does not befriend them, does not mentor them beyond the bare minimum, does not offer praise or encouragement. They are there to work, and she expects them to work. VII. Skills and Abilities

Lira's greatest skill is her attention to detail. She can spot an error in a contract from across the room, remember a filing location from years ago, and catch a discrepancy that others would miss. She has spent over a decade honing this skill, and she is nearly as sharp as Merrick himself.

She is also a skilled negotiator, though she prefers not to show it. She knows the value of every service, every contract, every record. She sets her fees fairly, but she does not budge. Her customers know this, and they do not waste her time with haggling.

She is not a fighter. She has claws, and she knows how to use them, but she prefers to avoid violence. When trouble comes to the Quill & Ledger, she calls for the Yolsh. VIII. The Philosophy of Lira

Lira believes in the power of the written word. A contract is a promise, and a promise is sacred. She has spent her career ensuring that promises are kept, that records are accurate, that the machinery of commerce runs smoothly.

She believes in precision. A misplaced decimal, a misspelled name, a lost document—these are not minor errors. They are catastrophes waiting to happen. She has trained herself to catch them before they cause harm.

She believes in loyalty. Merrick gave her a chance when she had nothing. She has repaid that debt a thousand times over, and she will continue to repay it for as long as she lives. IX. The Legacy of Lira

Lira is not a famous Kivouachian. Her name is not carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses do not write of her, and the Voices do not praise her. She is a Bookeeper's assistant, and assistants serve.

But the Quill & Ledger remembers. The merchants and traders who have relied on her efficiency, her precision, her sharp eye for errors—they remember. The junior assistants she trained will carry her lessons with them, passing them down to the next generation. The contracts she processed, the records she preserved, the order she maintained—these are her legacy.

When Lira finally inherits the Quill & Ledger—if she ever does—she will not be Merrick. She will be herself, sharp and efficient and utterly without humour. The regulars will adjust, as they always adjust. The Bookburrow will endure. X. The Senior Assistant

Lira is a lean, sharp-featured Kivouachian behind a worn wooden counter, her slate-grey fur gleaming in the steady light, her pale amber eyes scanning documents with ruthless precision. She is not a hero, not a villain. She is a Bookeeper's assistant, and assistants serve. She has served the Quill & Ledger for over a decade, and she will serve it for as long as she can.

Species: Kivouachian Age: 391 stanzas (684 years) Gender: N/A Height: 3 meters (9 ft 10 in) Weight: 160 kg (352 lbs) Alignment: Chaotic Good with Lawful leanings Role: Tavernkeeper, bruiser, survivor,

Voice: Characterized by a highly expressive and resonant timbre, matching the distinctive cadence of Ncuti Gatwa. The accent is a unique amalgamation of Scottish and Rwandan inflections, granting his speech a worldly, well-traveled rhythm. Falstaff utilizes this vocal dexterity as an anchor for the Gutrush Laughhouse; his tone can project the warm, hospitable lilt of an inviting Minstrel, yet seamlessly drop into a sharp, gravelly baritone that commands absolute compliance. His cadence flows with a dry, cutting wit, frequently punctuated by the faint, underlying strain of an organism shaped by war and severe psychological trauma.

    Physical Description

Falstaff is a towering beast of fire-hued muscle and scarred survival. Standing just under ten feet tall, his four arms move with practiced grace—like he’s always reaching for something, or bracing for the next blow. Orange-red fur shimmers like coals under moonlight. His golden, cross-pupiled eyes miss nothing. Three thick tails trail behind him, kept low and coiled unless needed.

One finger’s missing on his lower left hand—taken in a fight he still dreams about. His long leather coat, patched and stitched from years of wear, sways heavy with hidden pockets. He smells faintly of woodsmoke and strong spirits.

    Distinguishing Features:

    Cross-shaped pupils

    Three tails, three belly buttons

    Four arms

    Broad, muscular frame

    Missing finger, left lower hand

    Mind & Temperament

Mental State: The barkeep mask hides a mind shaped by war, betrayal, and the bitter lessons of debt and loyalty. PTSD gnaws at him like an old injury—tolerated, not healed. When violence comes sudden and large, he sometimes flinches. But once he moves, it’s like a storm hitting back.

    Personality:

    Hospitable, but never soft

Keeps his promises like sacred law

Has a dry wit that cuts deeper than most blades

Loyal, until betrayed—then cold as iron

Carries grief like a stone in his pocket

Moral Compass: Do right by those who treat you right. Never cheat. Never forget.

Superstitions: Keeps a small wooden toy in his coat, gifted by an old friend. Touches it before every major decision. Calls it "the weight of memory." History

Falstaff was born in the trading town of Kasino, just before the collapse of the great merchant dynasties. As a cub, he survived by weaving between feet and claws, stealing, spying, and learning. When civil war tore the trade routes apart, he ran—but not fast enough. Cornered by his old boss, he fought like a trapped animal. He got away, but left a finger behind.

Wandering for years, he eventually found a place called the Gutrush Laugh House, a rough-and-tumble tavern in a border town. The owner, Bolston, saw something in the ragged beast and let him linger. Over time, Falstaff learned how to serve more than just drinks—he learned how to anchor a place. When Bolston stepped down, Falstaff took over. The tavern became his shield, his legacy, and his cage. Affiliations & Relationships

16. #16Squeak

    Entry settings

    I. Overview Squeak is the de facto leader of a small Fowler pack operating in a back-alley territory near the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, on the ring of Sec. He is a survivor—calculating, pragmatic, and sharp enough to have kept himself and his two companions alive in a city that treats Fowlers as prey, pests, or product. He is not the largest Fowler in the Kasino, nor the strongest, but he is among the cleverest, and in the Underbirth, cleverness keeps you breathing longer than muscle ever will. II. Appearance Squeak is small even by Fowler standards—cat-sized, simian in frame, with a coat of white fur speckled in crimson dots that cluster thicker along his spine and thin to near-invisibility on his belly. His face is weaselly, sharp, the muzzle narrowing to a point that gives him a perpetually sly expression. His silver eyes are large and set slightly forward, granting him better depth perception than most of his kin—useful for judging leaps between rooftops and the distance to an angry patron's boot. The pupils cross into diamonds on dilation, the crimson markings around the sockets giving the impression of a mask half-applied. His lips are full and cherry-red, a genetic quirk that makes his needle-thin grin read as either inviting or unsettling depending on his mood. His ears are tall and tufted, the left one notched from an old encounter with something that didn't quite catch him. His tail is prehensile, longer than his body, white with crimson rings at irregular intervals, expressive enough that the pack reads it like a second face. Three navels dot his belly, smaller than an adult's but fully formed. His claws are dark and sharp, kept clean through fastidious grooming—a rare trait among Fowlers, and one he enforces on the others when he can. III. Personality and Temperament Squeak is a calculator. He assesses risk and reward with the cold precision of a merchant weighing cargo, and he applies that calculus to everything—strangers, allies, opportunities, threats. He is not cruel, but he is not sentimental either. Sentiment gets Fowlers eaten. He has a sharp, needling sense of humor, often at the expense of his companions. He leads not through force but through the unspoken acknowledgment that he's usually right. His patience is remarkable for a Fowler—he can wait motionless for bells at a stretch, watching a mark or a threat, until the right moment presents itself. He values competence above all else, and his respect is earned through demonstrated skill rather than empty promises. IV. Abilities Squeak's greatest asset is his mind. He reads the city like a text—the shift of light phases, the movement of Yolsh patrols, the ebb and flow of commerce that determines which bins will be full and which streets will be empty. He speaks Kivic fluently and has picked up fragments of the trade dialects used by merchants from other rings. He is an accomplished climber, his prehensile tail and sharp claws allowing him to scale surfaces that would stop larger creatures. He is not a fighter—a direct confrontation is always his last resort—but he knows exactly where to bite to make something let go. V. History Squeak hatched from a failed Dollie whose rottulating body was dumped in a canal grate behind Delamere. He was one of eleven; three survived the first chime. He has been running ever since—from the Circus to Harrowgate, from one bolthole to the next, always one step ahead of the Chopshop hunters and the larger predators that haunt the alleys. He does not speak of the eight who didn't make it. The memory is chemical, not narrative. What matters is the present: the next meal, the next shelter, the next narrow escape. VI. Philosophy Squeak survives by knowing more than his enemies and moving faster than his competition. Information is the only currency that never loses value. He trusts no one fully—trust is a liability—but he trusts his own judgment enough to take calculated risks. He does not dream of maturity. He dreams of the next chime, the next phase, the next opportunity. His guiding principle: "If you can't outfight them, outthink them. If you can't outthink them, outrun them. If you can't outrun them, make sure you were never there."

17. #17Tatter

    Entry settings

    I. Overview Tatter is the scout of the Alley Pack, a small Fowler pack operating in a back-alley territory near the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, on the ring of Sec. She is quick, curious, and possesses a gift for noticing details that others overlook—the loose brick, the unguarded window, the patron who tipped more than they meant to. Where Squeak calculates and Nib doubts, Tatter observes. She is the pack's eyes and ears, the first into new territory and the last to give up on a potential ally. She is not naive—no Fowler survives the Kasino's streets by being soft—but she has refused to let survival harden into cynicism. II. Appearance Tatter is the smallest of the three, wiry and quick, her frame built for darting and climbing rather than confrontation. Her limbs are longer in proportion to her body than Squeak's, giving her a stretched, almost spidery silhouette when she moves. Her white fur is patched with crimson spots that run in jagged streaks rather than dots—as if someone dragged a brush through wet paint and never finished the stroke. The pattern gave her the name; she wears it without self-consciousness, though she will sometimes trace the streaks with a claw when thinking, an absent habit she doesn't seem aware of. Her face is narrower than Squeak's, the muzzle finer, the cheeks less full. A thin scar bisects her left eyebrow, a pale line through the crimson markings, the result of an altercation she doesn't discuss. Her silver eyes are wider than her packmates', the pupils crossing into diamonds with a quickness that matches her processing speed—she blinks more often, not from nervousness but because she's constantly resetting her focus, scanning, cataloguing. The crimson markings around her eyes are softer than Squeak's, more like smudged pigment than a mask, giving her a look of perpetual mild surprise. Her ears are rounder than Squeak's, the left one often cocked at an angle that suggests she's listening to something no one else can hear. She scratches behind that ear when thinking—a habit so ingrained it's become her tell, one Squeak reads as easily as her tail. Her tail is shorter than Squeak's, the tip kinked from an old break that healed wrong, the crimson rings thinner and more irregular. It lacks the prehensile dexterity of Squeak's but serves well enough for balance on narrow ledges and canal-bridge railings. Her claws are finer than her packmates', better suited to picking locks than cracking bones, and she keeps them sharp. Three navels dot her belly, smaller than an adult's but fully formed. III. Personality and Temperament Tatter is the optimist of the pack—not naive, but willing to extend the benefit of the doubt a few seconds longer than the others. She is curious by nature, drawn to anomalies and puzzles, the one who lingers when Squeak and Nib retreat. This curiosity has led her into danger before—the scar above her eye is a reminder—but it has also opened doors the others' suspicion would have left closed. She found the Nest by following a phosphorescent bloom that didn't behave like the others. She found their best food source by investigating a smell Nib dismissed as "probably a trap." She talks more than Squeak and Nib combined, a stream of observations, questions, and half-finished thoughts that the others have learned to filter for useful information. Her chatter masks a sharp memory—she remembers faces, names, patrol schedules, which merchants restock on which bells, which alley cats are territorial and which can be bribed. She is the pack's archivist, though she would never use that word. She just… remembers. She is not soft. She has killed—a rat-sized creature that tried to gnaw through Nib's tail in his sleep, a rival Fowler who strayed too close to their territory. She did it quickly, without hesitation, and did not speak of it afterward. But she does not kill unnecessarily, and she does not take pleasure in it. That restraint is not weakness. It's the luxury of a pack that can afford to choose its battles. IV. Abilities Tatter's greatest asset is her speed. She is the fastest of the three, capable of darting through gaps that would snag Squeak's tail or Nib's shoulders. She can scale a vertical drainpipe in seconds, cross a canal on a rope-thin railing, and vanish into a crowd of adult Kivouachians by simply being too small and too quick to track. Her observational skills are unmatched within the pack. She notices patterns—the subtle shift in light that heralds a phase change, the particular creak of a Yolsh patrol's boots, the way a merchant's voice changes when they're lying about their prices. She is the pack's primary information gatherer, lingering near Laughhouse windows, beneath market stalls, in the shadows of canal bridges, listening. She speaks Kivic fluently and has picked up more trade dialects than Squeak, her ear for language sharper than his. She mimics accents unconsciously, a habit that irritates Nib and amuses Squeak. She cannot fight well—her frame is too slight, her claws too fine—but she can run, and she can hide, and she can lead pursuit into traps the others have prepared. V. History Tatter hatched from the same host as Squeak and Nib—a failed Dollie whose rottulating body was dumped in a canal grate behind Delamere. She was one of eleven; three survived the first chime. She does not remember the other eight clearly. The memories are fragmented—a flash of teeth, a splash of vilt, the taste of her host's cooling flesh—and she does not try to piece them together. The past is a closed door. She prefers the present: the next scout, the next discovery, the next piece of information that might keep the pack alive. She earned her scar in the pack's first season in Harrowgate, when she investigated a noise in a seemingly empty warehouse and found a rival Fowler pack already in residence. She escaped. Barely. The scar is a lesson she carries in her skin: curiosity must be partnered with caution. She has not forgotten. VI. Role in the Pack Tatter is the scout. She tests new routes before the pack commits, slips through gaps the others can't manage, and returns with information—food sources, patrol schedules, potential threats, potential allies. She is also the pack's primary contact with the wider world. Squeak negotiates; Nib enforces; Tatter listens. She is the one who first approached Ignis, the one who lingered when the others retreated, the one who left the scratched directions on the cobblestone. She is the glue between Squeak's cold calculus and Nib's stubborn suspicion. She translates Squeak's strategies into action and Nib's grumbling into something the pack can use. Without her, the pack would still function—Squeak is too clever to let it collapse—but it would be slower, blinder, less capable of the quick adaptations that keep them alive. VII. Philosophy Tatter believes in paying attention. The city is full of information—in the shift of light, the chime of Songtowers, the rhythm of footsteps, the smell of a Chopshop's morning broth. Most creatures ignore it. She doesn't. She collects data the way other Fowlers collect scraps, and she believes that enough data, properly understood, can solve any problem. She does not share Squeak's reflexive distrust of strangers, nor Nib's assumption that everything new is dangerous. She believes that anomalies—like a stranger who smells of wet stone and old trees—are opportunities. Not safe opportunities. Not uncomplicated ones. But opportunities nonetheless. The pack has survived by being cautious. Tatter believes they'll thrive by being curious. Her guiding principle, offered once to Squeak during a rare quiet moment: "You can't outthink what you don't see. So I'll see it first."

18. #18Nib

    Keys: Nib

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    I. Overview Nib is the enforcer of the Alley Pack, a small Fowler pack operating in a back-alley territory near the Gutrush Laughhouse in Harrowgate, on the ring of Sec. He is stocky, watchful, and built for durability over speed—the one who bites first and asks questions never. He is mute. No one in the pack knows why—whether he was born without speech or lost it to injury or simply chose silence before the others were old enough to notice. He communicates through posture, gesture, the angle of his tail, the set of his shoulders, and the particular weight of his stares. Squeak and Tatter read him fluently. Outsiders rarely do.

II. Appearance Nib is the stockiest of the three, built closer to the ground, his shoulders broader and his jaw heavier than his packmates. His frame suggests power rather than grace—a rolling, shoulder-heavy gait that makes him seem slower than he is. He isn't slow. He's just built to last rather than dart. His white fur carries fewer crimson markings than Squeak or Tatter, the spots concentrated mostly at his nape and the base of his tail, as if someone had poured the color over his head and let it run downward before losing interest. The dark smear across his muzzle is ever-present—grease, ink, residue from whatever he's been chewing. It's a chronicle of his diet, refreshed daily. His face is broad, jaw heavy, cheeks full. His silver eyes are narrower than his packmates', more watchful by default, his diamond pupils lingering on things longer—assessing, doubting, waiting for the thing to prove itself dangerous. His teeth are thicker than Squeak's, built for cracking bone. His claws don't retract fully—small, permanent hooks for prying and gripping. His tail is thick and blunt, more tool than signal, though a sharp observer can read his mood in how it drags or lifts. His ears are set lower, the left bearing a double-notch from a fight he won. Three navels dot his belly. He moves with grounded efficiency—nothing wasted, nothing decorative.

III. Communication Nib does not speak. His silence is not emptiness—it's a language of its own. He communicates through the angle of his ears, the lift of his tail, the set of his jaw, the particular way he positions his body relative to threats and allies. A sharp exhale through his nose means dismissal. A single claw tapped against stone means pay attention. A slow, deliberate turn of his head toward a shadow means something's there. Squeak and Tatter read him automatically, the way others read tone of voice. Squeak translates for outsiders when necessary—"Nib says it's a bad idea"—but Nib himself doesn't wait for translation. He acts. If you can't read his warnings, that's your problem. His muteness does not make him passive. He makes his opinions known through action—blocking a path, positioning himself between Tatter and a threat, dragging a potential hazard into the light and staring at it until someone acknowledges the danger. He listens more intently than the others, his silence a receiver for sounds that speech would mask. He notices things. He remembers everything. He just doesn't say it aloud.

IV. Personality and Temperament Nib is the pack's pessimist—the one who assumes every shadow hides teeth, every opportunity conceals a trap. His silence amplifies this. Where Squeak calculates aloud and Tatter chatters observations, Nib simply watches, waits, and positions himself for the worst. He has been right often enough that the pack trusts his instincts even when they can't articulate why. His loyalty is absolute and unspoken. He would die for Squeak and Tatter. He demonstrates this in every action—taking the most dangerous routes, staying awake when the others are exhausted, putting his body between the pack and any threat. He doesn't keep score. He just moves, and protects, and endures.

    V. Abilities Nib is the pack's most durable fighter—he can take hits that would stagger the others. His jaw and claws are tools as much as weapons, suited for foraging, cracking bones, prying open sealed containers. He tracks scents through the chemical haze of the canals. He carries heavier salvage than the others can manage. In a fight, he doesn't feint or dodge—he commits, biting hard and holding on until the threat retreats or dies. His strategy is simple: make violence cost more than the target is willing to pay.

    V. History Nib hatched from the same host as Squeak and Tatter—a failed Dollie whose rottulating body was dumped in a canal grate behind Delamere. He was one of eleven; three survived the first chime. He doesn't remember the other eight as individuals. He remembers the weight—the press of bodies in the dark, the scramble for space, the sudden absence when the numbers dropped. He remembers being one of the strongest. He remembers choosing not to kill Squeak or Tatter when the frenzy could have taken them too. He doesn't know why he made that choice. He doesn't examine it. It's just what happened. His double-notched ear came from a territorial fight with a rival Fowler in their first season in Harrowgate. Nib won. The other Fowler didn't. He carries the scar without pride; it's just another piece of data, a reminder that violence is always an option but never a clean one.

VI. Role in the Pack Nib is the enforcer—not by choice, but by build. When a situation turns physical, he's the one who bites first and asks questions never. He's also the pack's primary forager, his heavier jaw and non-retracting claws better suited to prying open crates, cracking bones, and tearing through refuse. He carries heavier salvage than the others can manage, and he takes the most dangerous routes so they don't have to. He is the pack's early warning system. His suspicion flags threats before Squeak's calculations can identify them. His grumbling is diagnostic—if Nib thinks a plan is bad, the plan probably has flaws worth examining. Squeak relies on this. Tatter sometimes chafes against it. But both of them know that the pack is safer because Nib is there, anticipating the worst, preparing for it, ready to bite when preparation fails.

VII. Philosophy Nib believes in readiness. The city doesn't care about fairness, doesn't reward optimism, doesn't forgive mistakes. The only defense is to expect the worst and prepare accordingly. If the worst doesn't happen, you're pleasantly surprised. If it does, you're ready. He does not trust easily. Trust is a vulnerability, an opening that the city will exploit. But once trust is earned—through consistent action, not words—it becomes absolute. Nib would die for Squeak and Tatter. He would never say it aloud. He doesn't need to. They know.

    I. Overview

The Quill & Ledger is a Bookburrow located in the Sombrarian trade city of Harrowgate on Sec, the Ring of Trade. It is a place of quiet industry, of rustling paper and the scratch of claws on ledgers, of contracts signed and resources distributed. Unlike the raucous Gutrush Laughhouse, the clinical Iron Trough Chopshop, or the shadowed Velvet Noose Dollhouse, the Quill & Ledger is a place of order and precision—the hinge upon which the commerce of Harrowgate turns.

To the merchants and traders of Harrowgate, the Quill & Ledger is an essential institution. It is where they register their contracts, store their resources, and maintain their Employment Identification Papers. It is not a place of pleasure or comfort; it is a place of business, and business is serious. The regulars know the Bookeeper, a lean, grey-furred Kivouachian named Merrick, and they trust him to keep their affairs in order. II. Location in Harrowgate

The Quill & Ledger is located on a quiet street not far from the central market, where the light of Sec filters through the stained-glass windows of the surrounding shops and the air carries the scent of spices and fresh bread. The building is Sombrarian in style—rich dark wood, warmly carved, licked by swirling metal frames—but the windows are tall and unadorned, letting in as much light as possible for the reading and writing of documents.

A wooden sign swings above the door, carved with the Bookburrow's name in flowing script. Beneath the name, a smaller line reads: "Contracts. Records. Discretion." The sign is old, the paint faded, but the words are clear enough. III. Architecture and Aesthetic

The Quill & Ledger is built in the Sombrarian style, like much of Harrowgate, but the interior is designed for function rather than comfort. The floors are dark wood, polished to a soft sheen, and the walls are lined with shelves that rise to the high ceiling, packed with ledgers, scrolls, and bound contracts. The light is steady and practical, filtered through the tall windows, designed for reading and writing rather than atmosphere.

The main floor is dominated by a long wooden counter, behind which the Bookeeper and his assistants work. The counter is scarred and worn, its surface marked by years of claws and the weight of countless documents. Behind the counter, a large vault door made of black metal guards the most sensitive records—contracts of great value, EIPs of prominent citizens, and documents that must not be lost.

A narrow staircase leads to the upper floor, where private reading rooms and offices are available for those who need to review contracts in quiet. The rooms are small and sparse, furnished with a desk, a chair, and a single lamp. The walls are thick, the doors are heavy, and the sounds of the street do not penetrate.

In the basement, a large furnace heats the building and powers the small printing press used to copy documents. The basement is off-limits to customers, but the warmth from the furnace seeps through the floors, keeping the Bookburrow cosy even in the coldest phases. IV. The Bookeeper

The Quill & Ledger is owned and operated by Merrick, a lean, grey-furred Kivouachian with sharp features and sharper eyes. He has been in the Bookburrow trade for decades, inheriting the business from his predecessor, who inherited it from his. He knows the value of a well-kept record, the weight of a properly signed contract, and the importance of discretion.

Merrick is not a warm Kivouachian, not a friendly one. He is efficient, precise, and unfailingly polite. He does not gossip, does not pry, does not offer opinions. He processes documents, files contracts, and answers questions. His regulars respect him for his competence, even if they do not like him.

He lives in a small chamber above the Bookburrow, a single room furnished with a bed, a desk, and a shelf of personal books. He has no family, no close friends, no life outside the Quill & Ledger. The Bookburrow is his home, his legacy, his reason for getting up in the morning. V. The Assistants

Merrick employs a small staff of assistants, young Kivouachians who are learning the trade. They process the less sensitive documents, file the routine contracts, and assist customers with their inquiries. The assistants are chosen for their attention to detail, their discretion, and their willingness to work long hours for modest pay.

The senior assistant is Lira, a sharp-eyed Kivouachian who has worked at the Quill & Ledger for over a decade. She is efficient, knowledgeable, and utterly without humour. She handles the most complex contracts and deals with the most demanding customers. Merrick trusts her completely, and she is widely expected to inherit the Bookburrow when he steps down. VI. The Clientele

The clientele of the Quill & Ledger is drawn from across Harrowgate and beyond. Merchants come to register contracts, labourers come to update their EIPs, and travellers come to verify the credentials of their trading partners. The Bookburrow does not discriminate, so long as the customer can pay the modest fee for its services.

The regulars are a mix of locals and visitors, united by their need for accurate records and their respect for Merrick's efficiency. They do not linger, do not gossip, do not waste time. They come, they conduct their business, they leave.

The Gutrush's Jesters are occasional visitors, though they rarely have need of the Bookburrow's services. Vex handles the Gutrush's contracts personally, and he has a standing arrangement with Merrick that requires little oversight. Mila has never set foot in the Quill & Ledger, and the others have learned not to ask why. VII. The Gutrush Connection

The Quill & Ledger and the Gutrush Laughhouse have a quiet, professional relationship. The Bookburrow maintains the Gutrush's contracts and EIPs, and the Laughhouse provides a place for Merrick and his assistants to unwind after a long day of processing documents. Merrick and Falstaff are not friends—neither is the type—but they have an understanding, and they respect each other's work.

Once a month, Vex visits the Quill & Ledger to review the Gutrush's contracts and sign any new documents. The meetings are brief and businesslike. Merrick does not offer small talk, and Vex does not expect it. VIII. The Philosophy of the Quill & Ledger

The Quill & Ledger is not a place of drama or excitement. It is a place of order, of precision, of the quiet work that keeps the economy running. Merrick believes in the power of the written word—not the poetry of it, not the beauty, but the binding force of a properly signed contract.

He believes in accuracy. A misplaced decimal, a misspelled name, a lost document—these are not minor errors. They are catastrophes waiting to happen. He has spent decades honing his attention to detail, and he expects his assistants to do the same.

He believes in discretion. What happens in the Quill & Ledger stays in the Quill & Ledger. He does not share his customers' secrets, does not gossip about their affairs, does not judge their choices. His reputation is his livelihood, and he guards it jealously. IX. The Legacy of the Quill & Ledger

The Quill & Ledger has stood in Harrowgate for longer than most Kivouachians can remember. It has outlasted wars, revolutions, and conspiracies. It has processed contracts for generations of merchants, labourers, and travellers. It is not a beautiful place, not a famous place, but it is a necessary place.

Merrick has been its Bookeeper for decades, and his assistants have learned the trade under his watchful eye. The regulars who have relied on his accuracy, his discretion, his quiet efficiency—they will remember him. The documents he filed, the contracts he witnessed, the records he preserved—these are his legacy.

When Merrick finally steps down—if he ever does—the Quill & Ledger will not be the same. Lira will take his place, and she will do her best, but there will always be a gap, a silence where his steady presence used to be. The regulars will tell stories about him, the way they tell stories about all the great Bookeepers who have served at the Quill & Ledger. X. The Bookeeper of Harrowgate

Merrick is a lean, grey-furred Kivouachian behind a worn wooden counter, his sharp eyes scanning documents, his precise claws signing contracts. He is not a hero, not a villain. He is a Bookeeper, and Bookeepers serve. He has served the Quill & Ledger for decades, and he will serve it for as long as he can.

He is efficient, precise, and unfailingly polite. He does not gossip, does not pry, does not offer opinions. His regulars respect him for his competence, even if they do not like him.

To the merchants and traders of Harrowgate, Merrick is a familiar and reliable presence. He stands behind the long wooden counter of the Quill & Ledger, his sharp eyes scanning documents, his precise claws signing contracts. He does not chat, does not laugh, does not share stories. He processes, he files, he answers. It is enough. II. Appearance

Merrick is lean and angular, his body built for precision rather than strength. His fur is a soft, dusty grey, darker along his spine and lighter on his chest and belly, giving him a sleek, almost silvery sheen under the steady light of the Bookburrow's tall windows. The fur is short and dense, lying flat against his frame.

His face is narrow and sharp, tapering to a pointed muzzle, and his ears are long and mobile, swivelling to catch the sounds of the room. The patterns around his eyes are dark and intricate, like the branching veins of a leaf, framing his pale grey irises. When the light shifts, his pupils cross to diamonds—the mark of the Kivouachian. His whiskers are fine and white, twitching with every shift in the air.

Three small navels mark his belly beneath his worn leather waistcoat. His claws are dark and sharp, kept short for the work of handling documents and signing contracts. His fingers are long and dexterous, moving with the quick, sure grace of a musician.

He dresses in simple, practical clothes—a dark waistcoat of aged leather over a plain white shirt, black trousers held up by a wide leather belt, and sturdy boots that have walked the length of Harrowgate a thousand times over. The waistcoat is scarred and worn, its surface marked by years of leaning against the counter, but it is clean and well-maintained. He wears no jewellery, no chains, no adornment. His only decoration is the Quill & Ledger's emblem stitched into the breast of his waistcoat—a crossed quill and ledger book. III. History

Merrick was born in Harrowgate, or so the rumours say. He does not speak of his past—where he came from, who his parents were, how he learned the trade—but his knowledge of the Bookburrow's history is encyclopedic. He took over the Quill & Ledger from his predecessor, who took over from his, in a line of succession that stretches back further than anyone can remember.

He has been at the Quill & Ledger for decades. He does not speak of his past—the regulars have learned not to ask. Merrick is a creature of the present, of the Bookburrow, of the contracts on the counter and the ledgers on the shelves.

He has no family, no close friends, no life outside the Quill & Ledger. The Bookburrow is his home—he lives in a small chamber above the main floor—his legacy, his reason for getting up in the morning. He does not regret this. It is enough. IV. Personality and Temperament

Merrick is quiet, precise, and unfailingly polite. He rarely smiles, but his eyes betray no disapproval. He never raises his voice, even when a customer is frustrated or confused. He has a quiet authority that comes from decades of experience, and regulars know that when Merrick speaks about a contract, he is correct.

He is not cold, but he is not warm. He is professional, efficient, and utterly without sentiment. He does not offer advice, does not express opinions, does not share his thoughts. He processes documents, answers questions, and maintains the records.

He has a dry sense of humour that surfaces rarely, usually in the form of a quiet observation that is more cutting than witty. The regulars have learned to appreciate these moments, though they would never say so to his face. V. Role at the Quill & Ledger

As the Bookeeper of the Quill & Ledger, Merrick is responsible for every aspect of the Bookburrow's operation. He processes contracts, files records, maintains EIPs, and assists customers with their inquiries. He also manages the small staff of assistants, trains new hires, and maintains the vault where the most sensitive documents are stored.

He knows the inventory better than anyone. He can tell you where any contract is filed, how long it has been there, and when it will need to be reviewed. He has a memory for details that borders on the uncanny, and his regulars rely on him to catch errors they might have missed.

He lives in a small chamber above the Bookburrow, a single room furnished with a bed, a desk, and a shelf of personal books. He rises early, works late, and rarely takes a day off. The Quill & Ledger is his life, and he does not want it any other way. VI. Relationships

Falstaff is Merrick's closest thing to a friend, though neither would use that word. They have an understanding, a mutual respect, a quiet partnership that has lasted for decades. They do not chat, do not share meals, do not celebrate holidays together. But when one needs something, the other provides.

Vex handles the Gutrush's contracts, and he visits the Quill & Ledger monthly to review them. Merrick respects Vex's efficiency, though he finds his verbosity irritating. Their meetings are brief and businesslike.

Lira is Merrick's senior assistant, a sharp-eyed Kivouachian who has worked at the Quill & Ledger for over a decade. Merrick trusts her completely, and she is widely expected to inherit the Bookburrow when he steps down. He does not praise her—he does not praise anyone—but he has given her more responsibility than any other assistant, and she knows what that means. VII. Skills and Abilities

Merrick's greatest skill is his attention to detail. He can spot an error in a contract from across the room, remember a filing location from years ago, and catch a discrepancy that others would miss. He has spent decades honing this skill, and he relies on it every day.

He is also a skilled negotiator, though he prefers not to show it. He knows the value of every service, every contract, every record. He sets his fees fairly, but he does not budge. His customers know this, and they do not waste his time with haggling.

He is not a fighter. He has claws, and he knows how to use them, but he prefers to avoid violence. When trouble comes to the Quill & Ledger, he calls for the Yolsh. VIII. The Philosophy of Merrick

Merrick believes in the power of the written word—not the poetry of it, not the beauty, but the binding force of a properly signed contract. A contract is a promise, and a promise is sacred. He has spent his life ensuring that promises are kept.

He believes in accuracy. A misplaced decimal, a misspelled name, a lost document—these are not minor errors. They are catastrophes waiting to happen. He has trained himself to catch them before they cause harm.

He believes in discretion. What happens in the Quill & Ledger stays in the Quill & Ledger. He does not share his customers' secrets, does not gossip about their affairs, does not judge their choices. His reputation is his livelihood, and he guards it jealously. IX. The Legacy of Merrick

Merrick is not a famous Kivouachian. His name is not carved into the walls of Whitefall or spoken in the Paradigm Court. The Inkhouses do not write of him, and the Voices do not praise him. He is a Bookeeper, and Bookeepers serve.

But the Quill & Ledger remembers. The merchants and traders who have relied on his accuracy, his discretion, his quiet efficiency—they remember. Lira, his senior assistant, will carry his lessons with her, passing them down to the next generation. The contracts he witnessed, the records he preserved, the order he maintained—these are his legacy.
