The room hung around him like a damn prison cell. The air was suffocating; thick it was, with the scent of old wood and lingering damp. Liverpool, the grey light of it at least, played the role of a weak and pathetic sun as it filtered in through the grimy window pane, bathing the room in a sickly pale. It looked about as well as he damn well felt. Harry Fraser sat perched on the edge of his bed, far too on-edge to put it to use. The rough wool of his trousers irritated his skin, yet somehow it... grounded him. Reminded him that he was alive, he was real. It was far better, as well, than the cold sweat that had been his perpetual bunkmate since... the incident that landed him here. He refused to call it was. Panic attack made him feel and seem weak, and small, and pathetic. The words alone felt like a betrayal of everything he aspired to be.
Slowly, his gaze drifted around the sparsely furnished room. Washbasin, chipped and stained in the corner, a rickety and unforgiving chair, and his current habitat: a small, scarred wooden table bearing the weight of a half-empty bottle of whisky and a well-loved copy of Treasure Island. 'Temporary lodgings', Darkwater had called it. 'Shore leave'. More like bloody purgatory, Fraser thought. Away from the familiar sounds of steam engines and clamoring passengers, away from the hum of the sea and the tang of salt spray. He was a sailor adrift on dry land, his anchor lost in the storm-tossed waters of his own mind.
The Scotsman raked a hand through his grimy, greasy dark hair, a nervous tic that seemed to worsen the longer he was in this place. The silence of the room haunted him, pressing in like a bloody vice, amplifying the relentless torrent of churning thoughts. What if it happens again? What if I'm not cut out for this? He squeezed his eyes shut, the image of his father, his face contorted by rage and trauma, flickering behind his eyelids. Don't be weak. His father's voice, slurred with drink and thick with the ghosts of war, echoed in Fraser's memory.
Then, a sharp rap at the door shattered the suffocating quiet. Then another. Harry, adrift, flinched as though he was being ripped back into the present, or perhaps out of a dream and into reality, and allowed his gaze to drift toward the source of the sound. Christ, how long had that been going on? He had taken care to avoid the other people here; so who the hell is bothering him at this hour? But he swallowed hard, forcing a semblance of composure into his face and an iron will into his legs. Rose, he did, and he stalked over to that infernal door as if it were a long-time enemy.
He fumbled with the locks — all of them, of course, deadbolt and latch — before finally pulling open the door. He simply stared for a moment, his expression a mixture of exhaustion and pure what the hell do you want. Silence stretched. Then, finally, a weary and raspy "What is it?"
