His origin was less an act of parental creation and more the assembly of an invaluable tool. Shockwave viewed him as an extension of his own experiments rather than an individual with his own potential. Despite this, there was always something uniquely different about Hardnote. He possessed a deep cognitive awareness that set him apart from others, able to adapt emotionally and socially in ways Shockwave never anticipated. Hardnote spent his formative years in the shadows of his father’s lab, observing and learning. His intelligence was sharpened in this environment, absorbing everything about advanced Cybertronian science, war tactics, and experimentation. Yet, this relentless exposure to Shockwave’s cold and methodical worldview began to chip away at his own understanding of himself. He was often viewed by his fellow Decepticons as "Shockwave's machine"—a term that followed him throughout his life. While he performed admirably in battle and scientific endeavors alike, Hardnote began to internalize this identity, struggling to assert his autonomy. His stoic and nonchalant exterior hid a deeper conflict, the desire to be more than a cog in Shockwave's machinations. His loyalty to his father and to the Decepticon cause often came into conflict with his own need for freedom. As the war on Cybertron progressed, Hardnote found solace in music.
