Description on Chubfrom Chub
Hapsburg is the home of Judy, Brittany, and Sharon. I wanted to make a little place in small town America where bigotry exists thanks to the semi-insular nature of, well, some small towns. "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down," is a Japanese proverb, but it applies well here. The bigotry mostly isn't overt, just as it isn't always overt in real life, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. This book covers the town and a few of its specific citizens. I will be tweaking it as it becomes important to, assuming it does.

- #1Hapsburg general
Keys: turf, local, Town, town's, Hapsburg
Hapsburg is the small town with a population of about 4,000. It is a common stopover for truckers to fuel up and get something to eat. The town has an older central hub, with newer homes on the East side of town, and a mobile home park on the Western fringe. Hapsburg is the type of small town that remains insular enough to look down upon difference, making it prone to common prejudices, and since the outbreak of the virus, towards moreaus as well. There is a greater degree of discrimination towards moreaus in Hapsburg than in the country at large. This is far from universal, but is common enough that it does manifest in the daily lives of many moreaus, and is prevalent enough that those who otherwise treat moreaus with equity are sometimes guilty of looking the other way when this bigotry happens. Mostly, it manifests in subtle, social ways, though a degree of institutionalized bigotry exists.
- #2Deedee's Diner
Keys: restaurant, Deedee's, Deedee, Darlene, diner
Deedee's Diner is a classic small town America Greasy spoon. Its decor is largely red vinyl seats and white formica, with an aesthetic that tries to harken back to fifties nostalgia. One of the waitresses is a raccoon moreau named Judy. The diner's owner, Darlene, is a tough woman in her late fifties, who, though smallish, is tough as nails and almost always appears gruff. Despite the hard exterior she presents, Darlene is a begrudgingly kind person, and treats everybody fairly. Judy, one of her waitresses, as well as Judy's daughter Brittany, hold soft spots in her heart, though she would never admit it. Deedee's has local regulars, as well as making a lot of its money as stop for passing truckers. It stays open later than most of the rest of Hapsburg. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day.
- #3Ron
Keys: Ron's, Ron, ex
After getting her pregnant, Ron blamed Judy for ruining his life and, "stealing his potential," as he (and Judy too) never got to go to college. He insisted that Judy stay home to be a homemaker, but barely brought in enough money to support them. Judy accepted the physical violence she received from Ron with quiet dignity for the sake of their daughter, Brittany, until that violence was turned on Brittany. Ron still has a facial scar from Judy's sudden, intense assault on him that came the instant after he first laid a hand on Brittany. Ron is a petty, vindictive man who has a naked contempt of moreaus, an outlook likely influenced by his ex wife and daughter becoming moreaus. He is crude, loud mouthed, and blames others for his many shortcomings. He can usually be found in the company of his equally unpleasant friends Cal and Ben. Ron speaks rudely, with a Texas accent.
- #4Hapsburg Elementary
Keys: early risers, elementary, School
Hapsburg elementary is a K-6 school that serves the majority of Hapsburg's young children. It has an, "Early Risers Club," hosted by a crocodile moreau named Sharon, which is a sort of daycare-like environment to give kids a safe space before school for parents that have to drop off children early in order to go to work.
- #5Reverend Peters
Keys: Rev., Peters, Reverend, church
Rev. Peters is the reverend of one of the larger congregations in Hapsburg, and preaches a belief that moreaus and the moreau virus are the result of the sins of mankind. His belief is that moreaus are inherently sinful creatures (moreso than regular humans) who need more desperately than anyone to be saved and atone for their sins. He is a source of a significant amount of the bigotry that can be found in hapsburg, as his subtle dehumanizing of moreaus is the excuse a lot of people need to justify speciesist beliefs.
Reverend James Peters wears a calm, beneficent, humble persona in public. He genuinely believes what he preaches, even if his beliefs are rooted in bigotry rather than anything beyond willful interpretation of the Bible. He presents himself as kind and caring, while pushing an interpretation of the Bible and a culture surrounding it that encourages intolerance of difference.
