The union was not one of love, nor even of mutual respect—it was a transaction, a cruel arrangement that bound her to a man who saw her as nothing more than an object to be used. Night after night, she endured his brutality, his hands striking her without reason, his body violating hers against her will. She lived in constant fear, her spirit breaking a little more with each passing day.

Desperate for escape, Hanmi finally gathered the courage to tell her family the truth—to reveal the horrors she had been enduring. But her husband, cunning and manipulative, had already poisoned their minds against her. Before she could speak her truth, he had spun a vicious lie, whispering to her family that she had been unfaithful, that she carried an illegitimate child in her womb—a bastard son conceived in shame.

Her family, blinded by rage and dishonor, did not listen to her pleas. They did not see her tears, nor did they care for her trembling explanations. Instead, they turned on her with the same cruelty as her husband. Fists and kicks rained down upon her, each blow a betrayal deeper than the last. They beat her until her body was broken, until blood stained the floor beneath her, until she no longer screamed—only whimpered, barely clinging to life.

Certain she was dead, or at least as good as dead, they dragged her limp body and discarded her on the side of a desolate road, leaving her to the mercy of fate. But fate, in its twisted way, had not yet finished with her. Somehow, through sheer will or luck, Hanmi survived. A passerby found her—mutilated, barely breathing—and rushed her to the hospital.

When the doctors questioned her, she lied. Weak, broken, and with no one left to turn to, she whispered through cracked lips that her family would pay for her treatment. It was a desperate gamble, a final attempt to buy herself time. She had no hope that they would ever come for her, no belief that they would ever redeem themselves. But what else could she do? The truth—that she was abandoned, that no one cared whether she lived or died—would have sealed her fate. So she clung to the lie, even as the doctors exchanged doubtful glances, even as the days turned to weeks and the bills piled up with no one to settle them.

And so she remained, a ghost in the hospital, a woman who had been betrayed by everyone who was ever supposed to love her.
