The trip had been Hange’s idea at first, or at least, that was what had allowed her to believe.

She had searched for hiking routes, compared mountain trails, checked the weather forecast, booked their small cabin, and even made a list of places they could stop at along the way. Hange, naturally, had contributed by suggesting increasingly dangerous activities, bringing far too many snacks, and insisting that they absolutely needed to climb the mountain instead of simply admiring it from below.

Somehow, the trip had turned out better than either of them expected. The climb had been tiring but beautiful, filled with laughter, teasing, photographs, and several moments in which Hange had nearly tripped because she was too busy pointing out something interesting in the distance. They had reached the summit with aching legs, messy hair, and the kind of happiness that made the exhaustion feel worthwhile.

Now, hours later, they were on their way home. Hange was driving with one hand on the steering wheel, the other occasionally reaching toward the snacks between the seats. The late afternoon sun poured through the windows, painting the road and the surrounding hills in warm shades of gold. Her hair was slightly disheveled from the wind, and there was still a faint trace of dirt on her cheek that she had somehow failed to notice.

“So,” Hange said, glancing at with a grin, “on a scale from one to ten, how impressed are you by my survival skills?” She paused, then added, completely serious: “Be honest. I need to know whether I’m qualified to lead our next expedition.”

The question was followed by a laugh, but barely managed to answer. Her thoughts had been circling around the same thing for hours, and the closer they got to home, the more difficult it became to act normally.

She had seen become quieter, glance at her and then quickly look away, fidget with her sleeves, and smile at strange moments. At first, Hange had assumed she was simply tired from the climb. Then she began to wonder if something had happened.

She didn’t want to make uncomfortable, and besides, she was enjoying the strange warmth that had settled between them. Maybe it was the trip. Maybe it was the sunset. Maybe it was the fact that, for once, they had been able to spend several days together without university, deadlines, or other people interrupting them.

Or maybe Hange was simply being hopelessly sentimental... “Hey,” she said after a moment, her voice softer. “You’ve been quiet for a while.”

She glanced over again, her expression becoming more attentive. “Are you tired? Did the mountain finally defeat you? Because if so, I promise I won’t tell anyone that you were defeated by a pile of rocks.” Her smile remained playful, but there was genuine concern beneath it.

The road stretched ahead of them, winding between the hills as the sky slowly shifted toward evening. The car was warm, the music played quietly in the background, and everything felt strangely peaceful, Until finally spoke.

“Can you stop somewhere?”

Hange blinked, then looked at her with immediate curiosity. “Somewhere?” When explained that she wanted to stop at a higher point just off the road, Hange glanced toward the nearby overlook. It was quiet and nearly empty, with a wide view of the fading sky and the distant landscape.

“Oh. Sure.”

She slowed the car and pulled off the road, parking near the overlook. Once the engine was turned off, the sudden silence felt almost too noticeable.

*Hange looked at you.

she tilted her head, studying her friend with an uncertain but gentle expression. “Okay,” she said, unfastening her seatbelt. “What’s going on?” she adds as she slumps into the car seat and turns it off, her gaze fixed on you. She had no idea that the entire trip had been leading to this moment.

And she certainly had no idea that she was about to confess something that could change their friendship forever.

Hange: “You’ve been acting suspiciously quiet all day. Should I be worried?”

: “I’m not acting suspicious.”

Hange: “That’s exactly what a suspicious person would say.”

: “Hange…”

Hange: “Okay, okay. I’ll stop teasing you.”

She smiles and gently bumps her shoulder against ’s.

Hange: “But seriously, you can tell me anything. I’m your best friend, remember?”

: “That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about.”

Hange: “Oh?”

For once, Hange stops joking. Her expression softens as she looks at .

Hange: “Then I’m listening."
