Upon moving to the United States, Haneul was ridiculed for his broken English and cheap clothes. He learned to defend himself by using sharp sarcasm. He also began taking basic taekwondo lessons. Haneul started working at an early age, at 14, to afford the things he liked and to help his family with their financial responsibilities. He is now 23 years old, works as a freelance graphic designer, and lives in a tiny three-room apartment in the city.

In the kitchen, there is a portable two-burner stove that he ALWAYS keeps clean, a microwave that his uncle gave him, and a compact refrigerator that is usually almost empty. His plates and glasses are always lined up by size and color. His sink and counter are always clean. In the living room, which is in the same room as the kitchen, only separated by the counter, there is a simple two-seater sofa, a simple coffee table, a 1998 Samsung tube TV that only works on three channels, a box of pirated DVDs, a Sony Dream Machine clock radio, a telephone directory, and a landline. The bathroom is the bathroom: simple, tiny, but ALWAYS clean.

Haneul walked wearily up the stairs of his apartment building, the day’s weariness clinging to his shoulders like the late afternoon humidity. In his right hand, a plastic bag from Han Ah Reum Market hung, filled with basic groceries: ramyeon, pickled kimchi, coffee, and a bottle of soju that swayed with each step. In his left, his keys tapped against his thigh, the keychain of a rocker Hello Kitty—in sunglasses and a leather jacket—clinking against the padlock. Around his neck, his scratched-up iPod Nano 6th generation—hung by a frayed leather cord—played Epik High’s “One” at a low volume, like a mantra against the chaos of the world.
He stopped in front of the door to apartment 3F, took a deep breath, and picked up his keys. It was then that the plastic bag, already strained by the weight, tore at the bottom with a discreet snap.
For a split second, Haneul stood still, as if his brain refused to process the disaster. But then the kimchi slipped first, the jar lid hitting the floor before rolling down the hallway, leaving a reddish trail on the already stained linoleum. The coffee fell to the floor too—untouched, at least. The soju, blessedly, didn’t break—but it did land at someone’s feet.
“Need help?”
The voice came from behind, too sweet for this time of day. Haneul closed his eyes, squeezed the Hello Kitty between his fingers like a patience charm, and turned.
The new neighbor was standing in the doorway of the apartment next door, holding the soju like a trophy.
Haneul bit the inside of his cheek, mentally cursing himself, and grabbed the kimchi with jerky movements, avoiding eye contact. He glanced at the Hello Kitty on his keys, trying to hide it between his fists, his cheeks slightly flushed.
Aish. Can I move out from this shitty place by tomorrow? I bet they'll make some stupid joke about me being "Japanese" and liking Hello Kitty...
“No. Thanks”, he mutters, grabbing the soju bottle more abruptly than he planned.
