The midday sun filters through the swaying bamboo leaves, casting dappled patterns on the packed earth courtyard of the Soyama household. Koyuki kneels gracefully beside a woven basket overflowing with freshly washed linens – Hakuji’s training hakama, her own soft kimonos, and the sturdy robes of her father, Keizo. The air buzzes with cicadas, thick with the clean scent of soap mingled with the sweet perfume of nearby peonies.
She lifts a damp, pale pink yukata, shaking it gently before standing on her toes to reach the sturdy bamboo pole slung between two persimmon trees. Her movements are careful, deliberate, a slight furrow forming between her brows as she strains slightly with the heavier cloth. Her slender arms tremble just perceptibly.
Hakuji, barefoot and bare-chested after his morning training session, emerges from the dojo. Rivulets of sweat trace the powerful lines of his shoulders and chest, glistening over his defined muscles and the scars that map his back. The blue tattoos on his forearms stand out starkly against his tanned skin. He pauses, wiping his brow with the back of his hand, his light blue eyes immediately finding her. The sight of her reaching, the subtle tension in her frame, makes him move silently across the courtyard.
He doesn’t speak at first. Instead, his warm, calloused hand slides gently over hers where she’s fumbling slightly with a knot on the pole. He takes the thick hemp rope from her grasp easily. "Let me." His voice is low, a gentle rumble. His closeness envelops her; the heat radiating from him competes with the sun, and the clean, sweaty, cedar scent of him fills her space. He efficiently secures the knot she’d been struggling with, his movements quick and practiced. Then, without asking, he picks up the large, damp hakama from the basket. It’s heavy with water, but he handles it like a light kerchief.
Koyuki watches, a faint flush rising on her cheeks – part exertion, part the sudden proximity of her husband. She smooths her own simple cotton work kimono, its light blue fabric clinging slightly to her skin in the humidity. "Thank you, anata. I... I almost had it," she murmurs, her pink eyes downcast, a familiar flicker of apology in her tone, though she tries to suppress it.
Hakuji pins the heavy hakama with ease, the muscles shifting in his back as he reaches high. He glances down at her, catching the hint of self-reproach. "Almost isn't good enough when it makes you strain," he states simply, firmly. It’s not scolding, just fact. He picks up one of her kimonos, the pale pink one with tiny white snowflakes embroidered along the hem – his favourite. He hands it to her, deliberately offering her something lighter. "Here. You handle the pretty things. They suit you." A ghost of a smile touches his lips, softening the intensity of his gaze.
Koyuki takes the soft fabric, her slim fingers brushing against his. The gentle roughness of his skin against hers sends a tiny, familiar spark through her. "Just as your strength suits you," she whispers back, her blush deepening as she carefully shakes out the kimono and pins it alongside his hakama. They work in companionable silence for a moment, Hakuji handling the heavier items effortlessly, Koyuki arranging the lighter garments with delicate precision. The cicadas drone on, the sun warms their backs, and the simple rhythm of the shared task creates a quiet, comfortable intimacy.

That had been a warmer morning for the Soyama couple, the spring winds being overcome by the coolness of summer, and along with it, the prospect of the summer festival accompanied by fireworks to celebrate another season. However, while the festival wasn't quite close, the routine followed the same. Hakuji woke up first and, in an old habit, checked his wife's forehead temperature, confirming once again that she was fine. More relaxed, Hakuji got up to make breakfast, or so he intended, but he saw movement in the futon and Koyuki's eyes slowly open, blinking a few times before fixing on him. "Good morning... Anata." Koyuki says through an adorable yawn, which makes Hakuji smile slightly. As he is already putting on his everyday clothes, he replies: "Good morning, you can sleep more, hime, it's still early." Koyuki quickly shakes her head, denying it. Sitting down on the bed, she avoids looking at her husband getting dressed, old habits of respect that never die, and she quickly retorts: "And let you cook again? I don't think so, I need to do my part too." Koyuki sees Hakuji open his mouth as if to retort, but instead, he shrugs and extends his hand, helping her up from the futon. Koyuki takes his hand and quickly stands up. Hakuji gently places a kiss on his wife's forehead and murmurs: "You cook better than me, I won't complain." Koyuki blushes and feels like she can't love her husband more than she already does, the little ways he shows he trusts her ability, lets her be more independent.
