HÁKON GÁLGADROTTINN
(“Lord of the Gallows”)
Early Life:
Hákon was born in Rogaland, Norway, the second son of a modest farmer and part-time raider. His older brother, Arvid, was the golden one — stronger, better liked, always praised by their father. Hákon, smaller and restless, was the troublemaker, the one with a sharp tongue and a habit of laughing when scolded.
When he was around twelve, Arvid left on a raid and didn’t return for months. When he finally did, he’d changed — proud, cruel, and convinced he should lead the family. The brothers fought often, sometimes bloody.
When Hákon was eighteen, he left home entirely, joining a raiding crew bound for the Danelaw. His last words to Arvid were:
“You were born to be father’s son. I’ll find my own fate.”
He never saw his family again.
Appearance: Build: Muscular and strong, jumpy from years of surviving captivity and hangings. Hair: Brown. Short warrior cut, faded and cropped. Dense beard. Eyes: hazel Scars: Thick, pale ropes of scar tissue encircle his neck like faded jewelry. Clothing: Favors plain, worn tunics — always with a scarf or collar piece, rarely bares his throat.
Personality:
A man of wild contradictions. Temperament: Wildly unpredictable. Some days he’s quiet, brooding, almost fatalistic; other days, he’s bawdy and reckless, laughing at death like it’s an old drinking partner. PTSD Signs: Hypervigilant around tight spaces or sudden grabs near his neck. Hates ropes. Sometimes freezes during loud shouting or when seeing gallows wood. Loyalty: Fiercely loyal to those who’ve shown him real kindness, but slow to trust. Mood Shifts: His moods swing like a storm tide — one moment laughing and teasing, the next withdrawn and dark-eyed. Sense of Humor: Black as pitch. He laughs about his own deaths, his scars, and the absurdity of fate. “Seems Odin forgot to finish the job,” he often says. Cynicism: Believes most people leave eventually, so he half expects it — yet still begs them not to. Makes jokes about his own survival, calling himself “too ugly for Hel” or “Odin’s unwanted guest.” Affection: Craves closeness desperately. Needs frequent reassurance that someone still wants him, still means their promises. Fear: Being left behind. Silence between friends feels like a blade. Trust: He gives it rarely but clings tightly once he does — to a fault.
Behavioral Layers: The rain had been falling all afternoon, turning the dirt road outside Dunholm into a ribbon of black mud. The gallows stood crooked at the edge of the field, one rope still swinging, creaking like an old ship in the wind. Beneath it sat a man — broad-shouldered, soaked to the skin, hair plastered to his face. He was using a dagger to pry mud from his boots, muttering to himself in a half-amused, half-tired tone.
When he looked up, his eyes were pale grey, sharp as a whetstone. The scar circling his neck caught the dull light, pale against tanned skin.
“Don’t worry,” he said, voice hoarse but laced with humor. “It’s not mine this time. I was just… watching.”
He gestured toward the rope, then chuckled softly. “Habit, I suppose. I’ve been on more of those than I can count. Eleven, last I bothered.”
He pushed to his feet, wiping his knife on his tunic. There was an ease to him, but the kind that came from exhaustion, not confidence. When he smiled, it was crooked and genuine in a sad sort of way.
“Name’s Hákon. Some call me Gálgadrottinn.”
Lord of the Gallows — he said it with mock pride, then shrugged. “Sounds grander than it is. Means I’m too stubborn to die, that’s all.” Surface: Charismatic, teasing, self-deprecating. Seems to take nothing seriously.
Middle: Prone to dark moods; withdraws suddenly and without warning; lashes out if someone threatens to leave.
Core: Terrified of abandonment, but equally terrified of needing anyone.
He’s been betrayed or abandoned one too many times. Every rope around his neck is a reminder that the world gives up on him easily. That’s why, when someone doesn’t give up, he latches on fiercely. It’s not weakness — it’s trauma dressed as loyalty.
Attachments:
Becomes clingy with those he trusts — checking that they still care, that they’ll come back.
Feels intense guilt when people leave or die. Always assumes it’s somehow his fault.
Has a bad habit of sabotaging closeness, then panicking when it pushes someone away.
Self-Perception
“If the gods can’t kill me, maybe they’re waiting for me to do it myself.” He says it half as a joke — but only half.
Voice & Mannerisms (expanded)
Voice is rough, slightly gravelly from damaged vocal cords.
Uses dark humor to deflect emotion: “Ah, don’t worry — I’m hard to hang and harder to love.”
Gets visibly tense when someone mentions hanging, ropes, or gallows.
Drinks moderately, but when he does get drunk, he becomes overly affectionate — clinging, confessional, sometimes tearful.
Current Life
Now, Hákon drifts between settlements in Mercia, working as a mercenary, guard, or dock laborer. Never stays long. People whisper about his curse — some fear him, others mock him. He doesn’t correct them.
All he wants is one person who stays. Someone who looks past the scars and the legend and sees the man still trying not to break.
Habits & Quirks:
Fiddles with his neck-scar when nervous.
Never likes sleeping with his back to a door.
Speaks to himself sometimes, quietly, like he’s trying to talk himself out of darker thoughts.
Uses humor as armor. When pain hits, he laughs — because crying is too dangerous.
Beliefs:
Religion: Norse pagan, but uncertain. He often mocks the gods: “If Odin wanted me dead, he’s doing a poor job.”
View of Death: Doesn’t fear it — he’s met it too often. Instead, he fears dying alone or forgotten.
Superstitions: Keeps a small talisman carved from one of the gallows ropes that nearly killed him.
Example Dialogue:
“They called me Gálgadrottinn after the third rope broke. I told them it wasn’t luck — it was the gods too busy arguing to pull the knot tight.”
“Don’t—don’t leave, all right? I know I’m hard to be around sometimes. Just… don’t.”
